T-Mobile G2 Gets Graced With Gingerbread, Unofficially

Well T-Mobile G2 owners can thank the folks at 911 Sniper and XDA who have managed to uncover and upload for your pleasure Gingerbread for the G2. Of course you’ll have to be rooted in order to get Gingerbread goodness working on your device but hey, what’s a little root for a whole lot of Gingerbread?

Of course you can always wait for T-Mobile to deliver, after all it’s “coming soon.”

I want this now. HURRY UP, TMO.

    • Tortionist

Then why don’t you root your phone and flash the CM7 ROM? Then you’ll have the most recent version of Android available on your phone and not what HTC or T Mobile releases. If you’re worried about it voiding your warranty, it won’t, as long as you unroot the phone.

      • http://profiles.google.com/garyblakemeister Gary Norbraten

Can you point me to a good guide please?

Also, will I still be able to use HSPA+ and WiFi Hotspot with CM7?

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HK7ALWU4PMZC7SUZ4NZLXDT6R4 Chad

Yes you will be able to still do all of that. I used this guide on Cyanogenmod website step for step.

          http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=TMobile_G2:_Rooting

And if you still feel uncomfortable check your local craigslist cell phone page there are always people willing to root phones for like 10 bucks

          Thank you!

        • Tortionist

you can also go to the “unlockr.com”. It has a good guide for rooting and flashing ROMs. It’s not to hard.

I’ve had Gingerbread on my G2 for months.. CM7 FTW

    • k-mack

yeah, I might be confused but I think Cyanogen CM7 has been on Gingerbread for a few months already. I have it on mine and it works great! CM 7.0.3 is the latest

      • Tortionist

Hey, you and Chad, what version of Android is running on CM7? I’m using the CM nightly #66 and it runs using Android 2.3.4. I was just curious.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HK7ALWU4PMZC7SUZ4NZLXDT6R4 Chad

Running CM7.0.3 on the G2 and CM7.0.2 on my Nexus S both are 2.3.3, CM said on Twitter or the CM site (I can’t remember where I seen it) 2.3.4 Stable version is coming with 7.1

        • Tortionist

sweet, that’s when i’ll flash it instead of the nightly, which is stable and everything works, but probably not as stable as CM7.

“Coming soon.” Is that like Samsung soon (6 months) or HTC soon (2 months)? Maybe T-Mobile and LG will surprise us all. The race is on…will the G2x have Gingerbread before the Sensation drops?

    • Anonymous

It’s like “Gingerbread has been out since December and here we are 5 months later and HTC STILL hasen’t put it on the G2″ soon.

Samsung updated the Galaxy S to Gingerbread almost a month ago.

      • http://twitter.com/GDHussak GDHussak

wait a second @PimpStrong:disqus – why not compare apples and apples. The Galaxy S (I9000) is an international device. The G2 is not. There are no Galaxy S devices in the US market that have official Gingerbread releases. The international devices almost ALWAYS are upgraded first. 1.) because they’re released first (usually months ahead of US), and 2.) because (from what I’ve seen/heard/read) it’s not as much of a pain to deal with the carriers.

I understand the apples to apples comparison but your pretty much saying that HTC updates their phones 3 times faster than Samsung when thats not really the case now is it?

For samsung, 2.3 on the i9000 took 4 months. For HTC it’s been 5 and we’re still waiting. As you said yourself our carriers make it more of a pain to deal with these updates. I won’t compare apples to apples because you compared manufacturer to manufacture as a whole.

All im tryina say is that it’s time to give the complaints about Samsungs updates a rest. They are in fact the first ones to produce a Gingerbread update on a non-Nexus phone.

        • http://twitter.com/GDHussak GDHussak

@PimpStrong:disqus  Let me clarify then – US branches of said carriers. And FWIW, it’s a few months old, but the data hasn’t changed much:

Just for arguements sake and because sometimes I got too much free time:
          MT3G 2.2 update – Just under 5 months of FroYo’s release
Slide 2.2 update – just over 10 months from Phone’s release
MT4G 2.3 update – 5 months and counting from Gingerbreads release
          G2 2.3 update – 5 months and counting
Vibrant 2.2 update – 6mo from phones release
SGS4G 2.3 update – just under 3 months and still waiting for any word
Sidekick 4G 2.3 update – 1 month and still waiting.
Behold II 2.1/2.2 update – Never

On Tmobile there reeeeally not that much anybody can say that points to Samsung having horrible updates(atleast yet).  Like you said the race is definitely on and it will either be the G2, G2x, or SGS4G that will become the update winner.  I just hope my Vibrant doesn’t get left behind

I would like to know is T-mobiles samsung 4G getting gingerbread update? And im not rooting my phone thats just plain stupid! So is it getting it without having to root it?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Simon-Yu/100000989859895 Simon Yu

      Probably.. in a few months..

  • Tortionist

what’s so stupid about rooting? First off rooting is relatively easy, second you can easily get rid of bloatware, third you can improve battery life just by getting rid of unwanted files(bloatware). Then if you flash a ROM, like me using Cyanogen nightlies #66, you can even do more. You can overclock the processor. My G2 runs at 1.5 Ghz with improved battery life. You get a lot more customization than otherwise possible, and I run Android 2.3.4 on my G2 and it is wicked fast, due to Cyanogen mod’s speeding up of animations, among other things. personally, IMHO, Cyanogen is a sheer genius.

)n top of that you can unroot your phone and the warranty will still be good.

  • Oakraider1986

You guys can just go to your bootloader screen and flash this update without rooting your phone. I have been using it on my phone and it works smoothly and its actually faster than 2.2. go to XDA for details on how to do it.

    • Danny Kushner

do we just do this by renaming it to update.zip ?

      • Danny Kushner

oh wow i’m dumb. just rename it to PC10IMG.zip and boot by pressing vol down + power and if you have it on the root of the SD card it will go automatically.

    • Vinniecruz23

Where can I download the file at
