HTC Sensation System Dump Shows Signed Bootloader, Bad News For Custom ROM’s

Today is seemingly going to be a mixed day for HTC Sensation fans as they get a video preview of the 10 best features the device has to offer. Unfortunately not all of the news is positive as AndroidPolice has uncovered a new system dump indicating the Sensation has a signed locked bootloader. As such the Sensation will be protected via HTC’s private key which means, unless by a stroke of very good luck we can’t expect custom ROM’s on the device. Yet, the same was said for the Thunderbolt and G2 in recent memory, there is no guarantee the same luck streak will continue for the HTC Sensation.

Anyone wanting to play around with the full HTC Sensation system dump can do so over at 911Sniper.

Since when have locked bootloaders ever been a problem?

    • Anonymous

There showing to be a problem for the Thunderbolt.

      • Anonymous

The Thunderbolt was perm rooted in a few days. The Incredible S is still a problem though.

Whelp, glad I went with the G2x even more now, despite the issues.  *sigh*  I used to love you so much HTC.

The Sensation’s locked bootleader won’t be a deal breaker for me. Everything I want it for (movies, audiobooks, ebooks, web, music – oh, yeah, and phone/email), should work nicely sans rooting and custom ROMs. I’ve got a rooted Vibrant for trying out new ROMs. Don’t want to risk voiding the warranty on the Sensation. Not all of us can afford to buy a replacement at full price.

    • nerdlust

Since the bootloader is locked will this make it safer?

    • Anonymous

i agree, the phone should still be badass. The specs and all of it seem amazing. Im sure it will get cracked eventually, probably just longer than usual. But its still a powerful device.

  • Matlock

UGH, this is a huge turn off for me! I hate HTC Sense and all the skinned B.S. that is out there, I just want to root my phone to get that Vanilla Android experience and HTC goes and does this! Hopefully, it will be like the G2 and the Thunderbolt which were eventually cracked! I like having full control of MY device. I dont like being controlled and restricted as to what I can do! Seriously making me want to get the G2X now, even though I’ve  been waiting for a sexy HTC device to replace my Sexy Nexy, which I adored so much!! DAMN YOU HTC!!!!!!!

  • Howellaruehl

I don’t care, I want the phone. Its AWESOME! =D

  • http://darnell-chat.myopenid.com/ Darnell

It will be cracked.  It has been expected that HTC would do this and just like with my HD2, HTC locked it and it was cracked too.

  • Anonymous

Ummm wasn’t the G2 locked up tight?  That stuff doesn’t last.

  • Anonymous

I’ll just wait until it’s cracked.  I bought the g2 brand new and almost shit my pants for the month it took to crack it (thought it was looking grim).  From then on (and after seeing my friend’s luck with his brand new vibrant) I said I’d always wait a month or two before buying a phone again. lol

    • Anonymous

You buy a new phone every six months?

  • http://darnell-chat.myopenid.com/ Darnell

The Sensation is going to Europe first.  So they may get it cracked before it even reaches the USA.  I also will be holding off buying till it’s cracked.

HTC is working hard to sell me an LG for my next phone.

Looks like Samsung and LG are the way to go for people ho like a truly open device. Samsung has already released there source code for the Galaxy S II. The DEV support for that device is going to be sick. open device. Samsung has already released there source code for the Galaxy S II. The DEV support for that device is going to be sick.

  • Youngt82

Good lock devs. Please come up and find a way to unlock and root this device :)

  • AMDESTINED

I have a feeling if HTC keeps this up they are going to experience a quick recent to the bottom. Kinda like the quick rise and fall of Glenn Beck

Just a suggestion but if some are needing to root and more or less hack around their own phone.  why don’t you just put the effort in to developing your own phone instead of putting all that effort changing a phone somebody else made into something you want.    You are wasting all that time anyway might as well try to develop something to make money off of.

    • http://ashn.myopenid.com/ Ash

Hacking to root is way different than staring a company and make your own phone…..How much $ do you have to start you company?

  • Anonymous

If I’m not mistaken, the Vibrants official 2.2 has a signed bootloader and the developers were able to cook up a work around to get custom roms loaded.

  • http://twitter.com/AWuzzer A Wu

Am I the only one who’s seeing “Signed…BYAA”? I think Chappelle and McCain might have had an influence on this one. Haha. Those who don’t know: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dK_vHH5731g&feature=share
    now you know.

Looks like these dumb ass companies enjoying shooting themselves in the ass. Don’t they read the articles about today’s educated Android user, we like hacking our phones, the #’s increase every day. This will put a big damper on this phone. I was so much looking forward to this phone, funny how things change so fast.

    • Amdivoff

It might be the companies protecting themselves from noobs bricking the phones and then taking to the store for an exchange. It happens alot.

    Let the crying begin….

WOW just wow….I need to get my tin foil hat.
    Really?
    Seriously?
You think a company is controlling you by not allowing you to root your phone?

The sensation isn’t even that cool,
the back cover is super ugly, locked down bootloader, and apparently it has worse battery life than the Evo
I’d wait for the Galaxy s2 or bag a g2x…again

  • Prod1702

Cyan Already said he bought the G2X because of the locked bootloader on this phone. So don’t plan on getting CM support.

    • Anonymous

Are you seriously suggesting that only the phones that Cyanogen owns are supported by CyanogenMod? That he really personally use 24 devices?

I dont care about rooting, I’d just brick it trying anyways.
I just want it to have good data reception.

    I’m planning on getting one.
I took the second G2X back for a refund because of poor data reception.
Best phone I ever had and I didnt want to return it,
but it didnt do what my MyTouch 4G does with no problems.

    :(

Wow.  So glad now I stopped waiting and got the G2x.  Had the vibrant with stock froyo  and the signed bootloader was a killer.  Had to find a bootleg way to downgrade to an unsigned bootloader just to root and then the root was really hard to get to take and have busybox.  Finally just went back to Eclair update 1 and put a custom froyo rom on it.  And that signed bootloader came with the Jan update
