T-Mobile Makes G2X Release Date Official, April 15th Online, April 20th In Stores

Update: For those of you asking, T-Mobile has said that the non-contract price of the G2X is $499.99.

Well would you look at that, T-Mobile went and made the T-Mobile G2X release date official right on the heels of a rumor claiming the phone would launch April 15th. As it turns out both April 15th AND April 20th were the correct launch days as our early information had pointed to a release on April 20th for over a month now. Those of you eager to pick up the G2X can order online on April 15th and those of you looking to walk right into your local T-Mobile store can do so on April 20th.

So what’s the price you ask? The G2X will launch at $199.99 after a $50 MIR on a 2 year contract. No surprise with the pricing there as it’s T-Mobile’s first dual-core handset we expected pricing right around $250. Let the breaking of the piggy banks begin.

Hey David, any word on off contract pricing?

    • http://www.facebook.com/phathom Peter Dudycz

Heard from a T-Mobile rep off contract will be between $499-$600. No definite price yet.

      • pantlesspenguin

        Good lord…that’s a bit steep…

        • DiMartini

If you buy your phones at Best Buy you should look into their buy back program. Upgrading before your eligible is so much cheaper through them. You have to be in the program for that statement to be true though.

        • pantlesspenguin

I’m actually on EM+ so I buy all my phones outright. Thanks for the info, though. And, I’m happy to hear that the price has been announced as $499 :)

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HK7ALWU4PMZC7SUZ4NZLXDT6R4 Chad

Yes i just seen the tweet from Tmobile it will be 499 I also have EM+ so we have to buy our phones outright can’t do Bestbuy,

    • Izzybrexx

My question exactly..anyone wanna buy a nexus s?….

  • Juan Carlos

I’m definitely picking it up, but on the 20th so, I can buy it at Best Buy! Why, because I they have a better insurance program and the easy upgrade when a newer version comes out!!! Awesome, can’t wait…

    • Sean

how so? This is the first time im going to be doing an upgrade outside of Tmobile, so im doing some research on the subject

      • whosaidwhat

The bestbuy buy back program is a joke if you ask me. Someone correct me if my math is wrong.

Let’s say this device costs $500 off contract but you buy it at the full upgrade price of $200 and pay the buy back program for $60, within 6 months of the purchase date, you can go back and sell it back for 50% of the retail price ($250). Less the $60 you paid for this program, you are only getting $190 from best buy. Even if you don’t factor in the $60 fee, you only have a gift card for $250 to use towards your next phone. Keep in mind that your next phone will cost full retail price plus another $60 fee for the program.

Don’t buy the plan at all and pay $200 for the phone now. See something you like after within 6 months, sell the phone on ebay or craigslist for at least $400. $100 more get’s you your next fix.

        500 x .50 = $250

        250 – 60 = $190

        500 – 190 = 310 + 60 (buy back prg) = $370 (you pay $370 out of pocket to get your next fix)

        Am I wrong on this?

        • Anonymous

Actually 6 months and 1 day will yield you only 40% of the phones retail value so that $500 phone turns into $140 still high tech device after just half a year.

I’ll try Craigs first and then Ebay but F!@# “Best” Buy.

    • Sean

    • http://profiles.google.com/bicho6 Nelson Custodio

I don’t know about the better insurance plan. My wife just bought the Nexus S from best buy and they offered her an insurance plan for 10bux a month. thats 240bux for two years. We got the same insurance plan from squaretrade for 92 dollars.

      • J1

        Asurion $72 a yr

      • Deff

are you retarded? 10 bucks a month would be 120 a year. DUH.

        • whosaidwhat

You insult the guy for no reason, though you are the one deserving of that insult. He clearly states “10bux a month. thats 240bux for two years” 10*24 isn’t 120.

  • Anonymous

Awesome! This phone will be HUGE for T-Mobile.

  • http://www.facebook.com/phathom Peter Dudycz

Told you so. Right on the date.

    • Pcj14

Peter you sly dog! I will never doubt you again.

    • Cam

      Kind of. ;)

Dumb question, I assume this means order on the 15th, it’ll get shipped the 18th or 19th, and get there after the 20th? Silly, unless the nearest tmo store is like 200 miles away.

      • Anonymous

I was wondering the same thing. I guess you may be SOL if it sells out on the first day in local stores. I don’t think this will happen though since it isn’t an iPhone. Anybody think this thing will sell out quick?

        • ArkAngel_X

Nah, cause you have 2 flagship t-mo devices coming out on the same day, sidekick 4g and the states first Dual-Core phone, people all wont just segregate to 1 phone.

  • Hsantanai

Now the Friday date makes sense David.

WOW!! 2 android devices launching on same day.thanks T-Mobile :)

I’m really liking this phone. I’m going to add a line just to add this to my account (I am a phone wh*re after all). Where I’m torn is do I get it upon release or wait until a month or so to see what kind of bugs exist?

    Thoughts anyone?

    • Frigadroid

After getting the Vibrant the first hour I will wait and see. That $199 = about $300 out of pocket with tax and fees on contract so you can always save if you want to wait for the next sale. Just depends on how bad you want it.

      • http://twitter.com/jbjtkbw00 jbjtkbw00

You’re making $$$ sense there Frigadroid. I should just wait to catch it on sale. Then I kill 2 birds with one stone by waiting out some of the initial bugs. Hmmm. I just may do that.

  • whosaidwhat

This might just be my next phone. My G1 is on life support right now so this could hold over until the SGSII or Pyramid shows up.

  • msprinkl

Can someone edumicate me on something? What does Vanilla Android mean? I run a year-round youth sports league using Google Voice and Gmail. I also need a bigger screen than the Blackberry I have to view 25+ page .pdf league team rosters. I usually delete games off a phone when I get it because I am prone to be easily distracted. I can’t get a Google Nexus phone yet because Best Buy won’t reduce price until your T-Mobile contract has expired.

I still have almost a year left on my current T-Mobile contract, BUT their Retention Department will let me get the G2x for $199 AND waive one month’s worth of my contract fees ($90). That would essentially get me into the G2x for $100. Do I get it or wait for the Samsung Galaxy II or HTC phone? I really don’t HAVE to get a phone right now, because we are running basketball at the moment and I have my laptop connected wirelessly in the gym. I just need it by the time fall soccer starts. Just need good GVoice and Gmail intergration. Flash Player would be nice. OH! Really want LED notification when a new text or email comes in. LOVE that on my Blackberry.

    Advice?

    • Rustytinsoldier

Vanilla Android is Android how Google intended it without the sometimes messy overlays put on by companies like Motorola and Samsung while they try to differentiate their device.

    • Ender

      Not sure

    • Ender

Not sure what to advise you on what to buy. The G2x will be one sweet phone. All that vanilla android means is that it doesn’t have a skin over the top of android, like HTC sense or motoblur. So if you want a phone like a nexus phone then this would be one to get. It *should* get updates more quickly, however we’ve only seen the nexus phones get an official gingerbread update so far.

    • Anonymous

G2x doesnt have led notification, if thats a deal breaker. As for everything else, its either you want a phone now or wait untill the pyramid / galaxy s 2 comes out. Its more of a choice at this point.

    • Heyyou488

How did you convince them of that deal!? I need the same one! Tips?

      • http://profiles.google.com/upwardfbccf Mick Sprinkle

I called up and at the prompt I said, “Cancel service.” (not really going to cancel, but wanted to go right to Retention Department, not regular Customer Service).

I asked how much it would cost to get out of contract because I was interested in getting an iPhone. Now keep in mind….we have 5-lines thru them (three mobile lines and two T-Mobile@Home). I have a 11 months left on current contract. She said I was too important customer and didn’t want to lose me. Offered full renewal discount on phone (usually reserved for those with less than 3 months left on contract). When I didn’t really seem interested (I was!), she said she’d throw in 1 month free service if I took the deal right then. I said I wanted to touch and feel the G2x first and wasn’t going to decide right now. She said to call back when I played around with the G2x in store and ask if they could offer me the one free month if I renewed. That’s about it.

        • http://www.volkswagen.de Quailallstar

Nice… Might have to do this too.

        • Tortionist

That is sheer genius. I’ll have to try that.

  • rxgator

Got excited when I saw the nomenclature continuing with the G in hopes it had a hardware keyboard. Good for tmobile, but the lack of a keyboard and a 4″ wvga make this just another device. Might as well wait for a keyboard which seems to be superior to this phone in every way and will come out in next 3 months.

    • http://twitter.com/AndrewLenhardt Andrew Lenhardt

with the tegra processor this is not just another device…..

    • MrMr

      Just another device?

HDMI out, Stock/Vanilla Android, HSPA+, LED flash, 1080P video recording, Dual Core Processor AND a built-in calculator! Forget about it.

Just because you prefer a keyboard on your phone doesn’t make this phone suck. It’s just a personal preference.

You’re right about this phone being obsolete in 3 months, though. However, I’ve been holding on to a standard flip phone on Verizon for the past 4 and a half years… so this is going to seem like a ridiculous upgrade to me.

      • Anonymous

Every phone becomes ” obsolete ” in three months anyway. Something better is always coming out.

    • Aerofanbig

Not trying to be a douche, but you really have no idea what you just said lol. Just another device….lol. This is the first dual core processor in the world (we just didn’t GET it first, Europe did) LG screens are badass, they make the highly touted iPhone displays. 4″…I’m so sick of hearing about how the world will end if you don’t have .3″ more inch. All it REALLY does, is give you a fraction more viewing screen for games and crap and it eats your battery faster. This is not just another device, this is truly revolutionary in the phone world.

You can go get a SideKick the week after though, it has a keyboard and 21mbs chip

  • DiMartini

I’m getting this one! If you buy any of T-Mobile’s current phone’s between now and the 20th, you’re wasting your money. The G2X comes with both T-Mobile and AT&T radio’s built in so if the merger goes through (Please God don’t let this happen) it will work on AT&T’s 3G and 4G bands without a problem. Current T-Mobile phones won’t do that. Also, for those of you wondering where to buy your new phone, Best Buy and Radio Shack are the best options. Both have a buy back policy that makes getting the next great phone in a few months easier. At Best Buy, within the first 6 months after buying a phone from them, you can get 1/2 the full retail value in store credit twords that newer phone you want! i.e. The HTC Pyramid is supposed to be coming to T-Mobile in June and if you decide it is a better phone than the G2X, you can buy it at half it’s retail price by trading in your G2X.

  • :)

Oh I’m so excited :) I can’t wait to get this phone into my store!

  • koto

I will wait on this one….especially if they are getting the lg 3d. Watch the price drops on this one. I cant see paying 200 and be on a 2yr contract anymore with TMOBILE.

    • S Keyz

but isnt that phone going to be international( lg 3d )?

    • Anonymous

At&t is getting the LG optimus 3d. It is unlikely that T-Mobile will get it too.

  • S Keyz

I would like to know and I want honest opinions is this phone going to be better than the Vibrant 4G? Because this 14.4 compared to the Vibrants 41 is raising a couple of question

    • http://www.facebook.com/zedklind Kevin Michael Lind

do you mean the galaxy s 4g? thats only 21. a phone with never have 41.. its 42*. If you look up benchmarks for the galaxy s and compare them to the optimus 2x you’ll have ur answer

  • Tmoguy

Any suggestions on where I can purchase a 16 GB Micro SD card? It has to be from your own experience please?

  • Datruth63

This phone will definitely hold its own against the competition.. the CPU is 1 of the fastest out there PLUS it will be running vanilla android.. a win win in my book. The Samsung Galaxy S2 will be a strong competitor but in the end its all about what UI u like better… Vanilla or Touchwiz

    • Anonymous

and 4.3″ vs 4″ and superior SuperAMOLED vs. LCD.

      I want the latter.

      • Anonymous

Plus Galaxy S II will be 1.2GHZ dualcore instead of 1.0 GHZ. Weighs less and look fantastic.
I can live with touchWiz, I always use launcherpro

        • Anonymous

I forgot about that!! SGS2 FTW!

        • Anonymous

Lighter is not always better. Many people thinking the galaxy s feels cheap. Obviuosly the samoled screen provides more saturated colors, but they are both great. Personally, I think the galaxy s screen produces colors that are too over saturated.

        • Anonymous

Better saturated than ashy white when viewed at an angle. That’s just me tho cuz I’m the same way when it comes to TV’s Samsung has the best standard LCD TV off angled viewing. My Galaxy S… BLACK when viewed at an angle.

And as far as weight goes, a good case can fix that. You can’t subtract from a heavy phone.

      • Datruth63

Hey pimpstrong i agree the Samsung Galaxy S2 will have a 4.3 inch screen compared to the LGs 4 inch screen… to each is its own about screen size… its not a eye dropper that will have me second guessing if i was to get the G2X. The real argument here is super amolded display verses the super LCD.. everybody will give the ‘W’ to Samsung but at the end of the day LG has made a product that will be arguably the best phone at TMobile so rather u pick this phone or the the SGS2 there will be no loser in the end!

        • Anonymous

Yeah no doubt man both phones are awesome.

      • Anonymous

Super amoled WITH samsung… FAIL. no updates for months or at all. Plus the screen drains battery so bad.
        LG with tegra2 = WIN

  • Nexus guy

I’m keeping my Nexus S and you should keep your Galaxy S 4G if you have one. This is a nice phone, but why do you really need to get? Because its new? You are getting the same thing right now, enjoy it.

    • Anonymous

Nice words to the unwise. I hope there’s not too many people that would dump a Galaxy S for this unless they are rich or off contract.

      • MrMr

Even if you’re rich… go buy something else!

      • http://twitter.com/brianLbloom Brian Bloom

I’m coming from a dying Blackberry Curve 8900. Been holding out for the “right” phone to make the Android switch and this looks like it. Sorry RIM, I’m one more loss in your market share numbers…

Would originally have gotten on contract, but with AT&T looming, off-contract seems right, and IRS refund just hit today so lucky me.. :)

  • msprinkl

For those that have previously owned a phone with LED notification and have switched to a phone that doesn’t, does it bother you? How would you know when a new text or email comes in without having to look at it constantly? Sorry if dumb question.

    • LC

I’ve heard that the app “No LED” is pretty nice for notifications.

    • Blahbot90

Wait a month or so, hacks will be out to get the bottom lights to turn on or the charger light (should there be one) be your notification light. It makes me super sad they’re not going to put a notification light though…like how hard is that really?

    • Tx2azn93

I use “No Led” free market app

      • http://profiles.google.com/upwardfbccf Mick Sprinkle

Thanks, checked it out. Looks like it was written for SG4G. Can’t tell if it works for others. I guess it should since it’s an Android app.

        • http://www.facebook.com/zedklind Kevin Michael Lind

the no led app takes advantage of the super amoled on the galaxy s. if used on an lcd it will drain the battery and be worthless. people have already tried this on their global optimus 2x phones in the xda forums

Lol. It can be considered an upgrade from the mytouch, seeing that it pretty much out scores it in every category. Besides the avalibility of hacks. Since the mt4G is an HTC, there are more hacks available. I have an hd2 and I’m seriously considering the g2x.

        • Chatter

I know you are correct and it is nice to get excited about the pretty new toys that are coming out. I have no problems with the MT4G and it is fast enough for my needs so there is no real need. Aah, the joys of new toys!

The FCC filing indicates that it does include it. Search for “LG P999 FCC” in Google if you wish to be certain. However, it certainly does include UMTS 850/1900 along with UMTS 1700/2100. The only thing we don’t know is if it includes support for UMTS 900. It probably does. Anyway, the ones that matter are UMTS 850/1900 (AT&T UMTS) and UMTS 1700/2100 (T-Mobile UMTS/HSPA+).

  • Heyyou488

Anyone looking to buy a MyTouch Fender? I am ready for my G2x!

  • pantlesspenguin

I had been waiting for this phone…but the more I think about it, the more I’d rather wait for the HTC Pyramid or SGS2. I had the Vibrant, & it was a great phone despite some flaws that made me require getting a different device. If those flaws have been corrected, that very well could be my next phone over the Pyramid. The GX2 looks amazing, but not amazing enough to give up my MT4G quite yet.

    • Chill

You shouldn’t, in my opinion. Ride that MT4G for as long as possible.

    • M Zapata80

I have a mytouch 4g myself but ready to give it up. It is a great phone and all but honestly the screen resolution sucks big time. I just don’t like how the screen looks since it looks kinda pale compared to some other phones with the same level. The G2 for example has an amazing screen clarity. But it is still a great device nonetheless and I’m so ready to sell it just to get the G2X which definitely has a much better specs!

  • MrMr

Does anyone have any good suggestions for a 32 GB mini-SD card that would work great for the G2X?

  • http://cosmicbreeze.tumblr.com/ DtheArtist

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! Right in my price range. :D I’m deciding should I get it online on the 15th, or should I wait & go check it out in stores w/ the Sidekick 4G (to give it a chance) & make my more rightful decision, & then purchase.

    • HeLLkAt31

when the HD7 came out I was almost going to buy it online on Tmobile but decided to try it first instead of letting all the hype get me so once I tried it at the store I changed my mind and didn’t buy it so go to the store and check both phones for any lag and super use the devices how you would normally use them and see if they can keep up with you then make a decision…

      • http://cosmicbreeze.tumblr.com/ DtheArtist

Yeah.. as much as I really want it, I’m gonna wait till the 20th. It’s best to get a handsome experience, than a “he-say, she-say” impression.

  • Brooks

What are the odds of this phone selling out at retailers? I can upgrade on the 25th… I’ll be pretty upset if I can’t get one on the 25th.

i’d calllsustomer service. I’m sure they’d let you get a full upgrade 5 days before

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6BZWRJOKVCUIZWHMEWABAUBLHQ gfam

What is this? This phone is okay (I guess), but bring on the real goods, bring on the REAL prize T-Mobile, the GALAXY S 2, lol! That’s what we want now!

    • Johnee78

Aside from the .3 what makes the SG2 that much better.. I was debating this but I can’t justify waiting 3 – 4 months for the samsung..

      • Carl

The screen is better, that’s it. With Samsung you get stuck with slow updates and I don’t think the new SG2 is dual core is it?

        • pantlesspenguin

It is. I just hope T-Mo doesn’t strip features off it like they did w/ the Vibrant (camera flash, for example). I’m really wanting this phone.

        • Frigadroid

You know samsung and tmobile have a plan to change somethings around. So they can market the sgs2 pro+4 a few months later as advanced, its just how they do business.

          Lol, sad buy probably TRUE!

        • remister

I have a 4g right now and the OS is a bit laggy. I havent even installed any other apps yet. Samsung has to beef up their processors to have a win on G2X

I heard it may have been troublesome on the original galaxy s but the GPS on my Nexus S is flawless, and I do mean flawless in every sense of the word.

Daaaaamn only 500 off contract? I was expecting somewhere around the 650-700 mark. Color me happy.

      Lol me too!

The Samsung Galaxy S2 will have a 4.3 inch screen compared to the LGs 4 inch screen… to each is its own about screen size… its not a eye dropper that will have me second guessing if i was to get the G2X. The real argument here is super amolded display verses the super LCD.. everybody will give the ‘W’ to Samsung but at the end of the day LG has made a product that will be arguably the best phone at TMobile so rather u pick this phone or the the SGS2 there will be no loser in the end

Pulling the trigger on this on the 15th. Nothing else even officially announced yet by T-Mobile (like Sammy GS2 and Pyramid) and stock vanilla android with a dual core and every other spec I need (except maybe LED notification but many phones don’t have it for some reason. Finally shall rid myself of the original MT3G. Glad I was patient and didn’t grab anything else. Is it the 15th yet? I’ll be ordering at 12:01AM and overnight shipping it.

I hope you plan to pick it up on contract from Best Buy, and probably Best Buy Mobile, but safest to check.

If they do, & you buy it retail price, expect it to be $100 more than the original retail price.

is it faster to order online or wait and get it in the store?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Simon-Yu/100000989859895 Simon Yu

Online orders can come very early I think, and are a safer bet in my opinion as in store it could be out of stock quite quickly, unless you live in some sort of area where people aren’t keen on picking up the G2x on release, and I don’t think it will be sold out.. at least in my area since we probably won’t see advertising on TV for it so there may be good chance to pick it up in store.. but in short I think Online can be faster and ‘safer’ (as in you might be guaranteed to get it) but you never know.

what are the pros and cons of this vs. the Pyramid? other than who knows when it may appear?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Simon-Yu/100000989859895 Simon Yu

The Processors in the Pyramid are slower than the Tegra 2′s as the Tegra 2′s are Armv9 and the Snapdragon’s are Armv8 but apparently HTC is making up for it by overclocking them to 1.5Ghz. The Pyramid has a larger screen and better resolution (960×540) versus the G2x’s 800×480, but the G2x has an IPS LCD display which is much better than the Pyramid’s SLCD, so better colors… also I believe the Pyramid doesn’t have HDMI and the G2x will get updates faster than the Pyramid since it is running Stock Android and it may have the Stock WiFi Hotspot meaning Free HotSpot abilities, also it’s European brother the Optimus 2x has already been rooted.

Hey… it’s ‘only’ 799.99 on Ebay now.. get it while it’s hot ;)

    • M Zapata80

Why would you get it for $799.99 while the phone is gonna be released soon with a cheaper price tag? It’s a $300 saving right there if you can be a bit more patience.

      • Aerofanbig

Simon is poking fun at the jack ass who put up a “pre sale” G2x for 999$ yesterday. Or the guy who has “5 available” for 800$ this morning. Of course his add says….may not ship until the 20th lol
