T-Mobile Announces April 20th As Sidekick 4G Day

April 20th is looking to be quite the day for T-Mobile fans as T-Mobile has announced both the availability of the G2X this morning along with…drum roll please…the Sidekick 4G. Dropping April 20th in stores and online the Sidekick 4G will cost $99.99 after a $50 mail in rebate. Turns out that Radio Shack tweet was on the money after all. Sidekick fans better start your calendar countdowns!

Is there really a sidekick fan out there?
guess its more of a kids phone so maybe

    • Aerofanbig

kids phone that will be faster then the G2x lol Doesn’t the SK come with the 21mbs chip like the SG4G? G2x is rockin the 14.4

      • Cellphone Chris

        True

        • MrMr

This phone won’t be faster than the G2X. Sorry.

        • Oreo

There speaking about the 4G connection, but other than that its still a 2009 vibrant with a slide out keyboard and ffc. It’s still a good phone, but so think I’ll take the dual-core over the key board any day.

        • MrMr

Ah, well said. I stand corrected! A 21mbs chip would be nice. But, standard HSPA+ speeds will have to do. ;)

    • http://cosmicbreeze.tumblr.com/ DtheArtist

Apparently, I believe that’s the reason T-Mobile brought the line back to life. & There is poweredbydanger. I myself am I Sidekick fan. I don’t see why people hate this device so much. Nobody talks crap about getting every other QWERTY smartphone. Droid’s, Cliq, Cliq 2, Samsung Epic 4G, the list goes on. Just because some kids (maybe a lot) used them doesn’t justify for all hate this device gets, & it doesn’t make it a kids phone. I see a lot of kids with iPhone’s, Droid’s, Blackberry’s (much more than anything else), LG Env’s, & Everything else. If you have the money, you can own it. It the kids have the money, or their parents do they’re gonna have the phone. Doesn’t take away from it. It’s not like each device says “If this kid buys me, it’s a kid’s phone.” If that’s the case, less start to check off the following for kids phones: iPhone, Droid, Droid X, Samsung Epic 4G, Motorola Defy, & so on.

Now they get it…I think they absolutely nailed the price range for this phone. Now they just need to bring back Paris Hilton, Snoop Dogged, Dwayne Wade and Charles Barkley lol

  • http://twitter.com/LTEstyles LTEstyles

every teenager out there must be excited. I’m still however waiting for a grown man phone.

    • pantlesspenguin

What people fail to realize is that the Sidekick faithful of the past are all grown now, themselves. While some people have moved on (like myself), there are other grown folk who want this phone for nostalgia reasons.

      • Anonymous

I hopped on the bandwagon pretty late (getting a sidekick in 2007 with the LX) so after upgrading to my current LX 09 and seeing the plan disappear, I still want my sidekick features. Little upset that the G2X will be available with so many more technical features that the Sidekick could only dream of having, but eventually I will probably get a new phone, maybe the G3X with a quad core processor :)

      • Anonymous

Style and technology move on and become, well, out of style and outdated. It’s been two whole years since the last Sidekick release and I would love to know how todays 15 and 16 year olds feel about the Sidekick line considering it’s decline of popularity (atleast to NEW phone users).

I’m not knocking the device but you gotta admit that this phone is like putting 360 guts inside of the black box that is the origional Xbox.

        What say you pantless?

        • pantlesspenguin

I completely agree w/ you, Pimp. LIke I said in my prior post, I’m one that has moved on. However, I still check in @ poweredbydanger.com (the sidekick forums) sometimes. The reason I said that I could see people picking a SK4G up for nostalgia purposes is because of this thread: http://www.poweredbydanger.com/forums/showthread.php?t=116089. Plus, a lot of people on that thread say they missed the 5-row keyboard of the original Sidekick devices, so that’s a selling point right there among avid texters. Combine that w/ the low price point & Android OS & I think this phone will do OK for its’ intended demographic, as well as previous Sidekick owners who are in their 20s/30s now.

The majority of the people who frequent this site foam @ the mouth for new high end superphones (again, me included). But, we’re not the only demographic out there.

        • Anonymous

Yeah sellin this thing for only a hundred bucks is a very wise move on TMO’s part. I think more than 50% of the nostalgic fans will grab one of these cuz it’s up dated and lives again. The cheap price and great feature set should reel in a great deal of new users as well.

        • pantlesspenguin

Indeed. I just don’t understand why some people bash devices when it’s not something they want. Is it feasible to buy EVERY SINGLE PHONE T-MOBILE PUTS OUT?? Of course not. So why bash those in-between devices? I’m not directing this @ you, Pimp, it’s just a general statement. I’m personally waiting for either HTC Pyramid or SGS2. Why would I bash other devices I have no interest in?

        • Anonymous

It’s all good I hear you.

      • jarrod

I’m in it for the keyboard; I don’t care about the “nostalgia”. Easily 10000 sms go through my phone every month plus many hundreds of IMs and email.

    • :)

G2X is launching on the same day so everyone is happy :)

  • http://profiles.google.com/adrian.balansay Adrian Balansay

Yayyyy! Super excited for this phone to come out! It’s gonna be banana’s! Been waiting years for this phone. Went through a MyTouch 3G, HD2, and Blackberry 9700 and now my beloved is rising from the dead! Joyous day indeed!

  • Deceptivesmiles

Great pricing. That along wit the new unlimited plan they’re rollin out is a good move.

I really wish ppl would stop callin it a kids phone. There are more kids wit Blackberrys and iPhones than anything. So, are thos kids phones?

I really like the look of the custom Android, wonder how it really performs tho. The only thing Tmo got wrong was the manufacturer, HTC should’ve been the one to make the sidekick, or better yet, let Sharp continue

I really wish people would stop saying Samsung isn’t a good choice. Considering the fact that TMO probably hand crafted this thing and basically from the same mold of the old Sidekicks, it’s not much of a Samsung. It’s not made from a Samsung design and the Software isnt Touch Wiz.

What difference would HTC or Sharp have even made on this phone? “Updates will come faster” Updates will come when T-Mobile decides on this thing. Sharp would have…???

      • http://cosmicbreeze.tumblr.com/ DtheArtist

*Completely agree’s* Samsung really isn’t that bad. They had 1 major flop :The Samsung Behold II. & of course Froyo to the US Galaxy S line took a while, but it was because of the TouchWiz (people knew it was on there before they bought it). They had to work out some kinks before they actually put it on there. It took a while, but Froyo updates are coming now, & Samsung has stated they are priority 1st with these updates. People should be talking about Motorola. A lot of their phones/devices are on or will be stuck on no further than 1.5-1.6, some 2.1, some still haven’t got Froyo, & if you look at the list on AndroidandMe a lot of their phones aren’t getting Gingerbread (2.3), or are unknown or will they ever get that update.

      • Cameron W3st

It would have been a more solid build factor if someone else designed it.

You have to look at the other Samsuck phone…The Vibrant is a piece of light weight plastic crap…i think if I squeezed it hard enough I could shatter it…On the other hand, HTC’s phones are made of metal and a harder plastic…and even sharps old sidekicks were made of a harder plastic than Samsucks…

        • Anonymous

How solid was this phone when you played with it at CTIA?? Or have you yet?

I have a Vibrant in a case and the weight is great and the size is perfect in hand. Gorilla Glass in the front and my phone is almost impervious.

        • pantlesspenguin

I didn’t like the flimsy plastic back on my Vibrant, but when I put the phone in a semi-flexible gel case it was perfect.

        • Stormnation

Yeah the LX 2009 was a VERY solid sturdy device. I agree, Sharp or HTC should’ve designed it. The camera on it is a FULL JOKE!! I want be getting this silly phone anyway. But I’m sure all the Justin Beiber and Nicki Minaj fans will. Smh

        • Anonymous

Again, your comparing the sturdiness of the LX to the sturdiness of the 4G when you haven’t even held it yet. And I doubt that it was Samsung’s decision to put a wimpy 3MP cam on it.

      • Senor Chang

Holy crap, you don’t know anything about cellphones really, do you? Tmo now hand-crafts their own hardware? Wow. You REALLY need to stop posting. Just say you like the phone, leave it at that.

        • Anonymous

WTF are you talkin about? It’s called a DESIGN TEAM! What do you think TMO does NOT have one??

        • Anonymous

          ?????????

    • Anonymous

I agree Samsung gets a really bad rap for their phones. Idk why, if you want to knock them for software issues go ahead but I have a vibrant also and I love it. The reason for the phones weight is because its eco-friendly, so less plastic. I also think the whole aluminum over plastic is over rated anyway.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HK7ALWU4PMZC7SUZ4NZLXDT6R4 Chad

Anyone know the off contract price for the SK4G?

    • http://cosmicbreeze.tumblr.com/ DtheArtist

I would like to know that too *just Tweeted T-Mobile*. I have a feeling it’s gonna be either $449.99 or $499.99. Leaning more towards $449.99, or in the $449.00-$499.99 range.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HK7ALWU4PMZC7SUZ4NZLXDT6R4 Chad

I would agree to that price range as well hopefully 449, ..399 would be even nicer..I may be purchasing both on the 20th b/c my lil bro is moving onto my T-Mobile plan for the SK4G and I want the G2x so I’m trying to find out what I’ll be spending that day

        • http://cosmicbreeze.tumblr.com/ DtheArtist

Oh, I see… I want to buy both for myself :D, lol. But I can only have one :/ lol. That’s nice of you thou to do that for your bro.

        • http://profiles.google.com/adrian.balansay Adrian Balansay

hey Chad. What does it take to be your lil bro? I need a new phone, LOL.

      • http://profiles.google.com/adrian.balansay Adrian Balansay

HOPEFULLY not that much… i mean damn. The higher end phones are like that high and are going for 199 2yr contract. just think, this one is going for 99 or even 150. i hope it’s only 399

        • http://cosmicbreeze.tumblr.com/ DtheArtist

Yeah, I agree. I would seriously hope it’s $399, too. But, I think that’s wishful thinking. Considering the Motorola Cliq 2 is $399 & it isn’t HSPA+ 21, & doesn’t have a front facing camera, idk. I’m still leaning towards that $449.99 (which is pretty reasonable, I guess), better than $499.99, I know that much. It would be really stupid for T-Mobile to price the Sidekick 4G at the same price range as the G2x thou. I mean the features of the G2x are like far superior at that price point, even though they’re directed at 2 totally different target markets.

  • http://cosmicbreeze.tumblr.com/ DtheArtist

YESSSSSSSSSSSSS! :D both the same day. Such a tough decision. G2x or Sidekick 4G, decisions, decisions….

    • Stormcitybooking

You are very soft dude. Pillow biter?

      • http://cosmicbreeze.tumblr.com/ DtheArtist

You don’t even know me, for one. Two, how am I soft? What did I say that made me soft? Are you mad at me about something? You just made yourself look like a complete idiot within all of 20-30 seconds. With that said, please do civilization a favor & commence to burying yourself alive. Thanks :D

      • galaxylover

You’re calling that man soft? Because of a cell phone? You’re acting like a total faggit.

      • Aerofanbig

Odd question on a comment board for a cell phone fan site. Or maybe you’re trying to ask him out?

      • Anonymous

Is that an invitation? You think your post makes you cool?

G2X man!!!! SK4G is for the birds… At least you’ll have 14 days to try them both…

      • http://cosmicbreeze.tumblr.com/ DtheArtist

That’s where I’m leaning towards, but I don’t agree that the SK4G is for the birds. Idk y Sidekicks get such a bad rep. Compared to the G2x is far inferior, but to it’s demographic it’s a great choice. My preferences lie between the 2 (G2x & SK4G).

  • http://www.facebook.com/ElectroHop Jay Alford

I hate the fact that their dropping BOTH of these phones on the same day!!! I will definitely be at the store playing with the SK4G. It just sucks that I don’t start my job until May 4th. I know what I’ll be spending my first check on. Hehe.

  • Stormnation

Yeah, my 19 yr girlfriend was sweating me about getting her the SK 4G for her B-day which is 2days after the release date. Yeah, she gon have to wait til I see someone on Craigslist selling it for under $250 because I know the EM+ price is going to be around $400. But for me, I’m keeping my MT4G and White BB 9780 til the Sony Xperia Play (Playstaion phone) drops. Thats going to be the device thats going to turn heads when I’m out and about cheating on my girl =D

i wish the screen wasnt so small and that there was a flash for the camera then id totally be all over this phone.

The sidekick 4G feels real solid….I’m diggin the sliding mechanism also. I got a chance to play with a dummy unit today…This is gonna be a hot seller esp at the price point….The real question is: Where’s my G-Slate???

    • reddz

me too! I love the keyboard. I’m getting the G-Slate and the SK4G.

  • reddz

I am a TMO employee. We got the dummy SK4G in today. I must say, that it feels (even though it’s a dummy) pretty solid. They keyboard is on the SK4G wayyyyyyy better than the MT3GS and the G2. I’m in my early 30′s, and YES I am getting this phone for the keyboard alone. My other reason for getting this phone is to be different from everyone else, and every other carrier. If you think about it, practically all other android phones are the same. Really, the only thing that separates them is the actual hardware. All of the (USA) Samsung Galaxy phones use the TouchWiz UI, most of the HTC’s use Sense UI, Most Motorolas use MotoBlur, and of course you have vanilla Android. I have experienced all of them, I am excited to see the SK4G return as an ANDROID device with its own UI. It may not have the best camera, but I know the keyboard alone will be a key factor in the success of this device. I’m not a fan of all touchscreen, but then again I’m not a fan of the G2 keyboard or the MTslide keyboard. I will say that I was not a fan of the former SK’s “bubbly” personality (flashing lights, teeny bop sounds, etc), but this one does look a bit more “grown” from previous versions!

  • Mobile Truth

It’s not a kids phone. No phone is a kids phone. Usually older people who say that usually don’t text or don’t know how or are too dumb to figure the phone out. The sk is clocked at 21 mobs on hspa+ and the g2x is clocked at 14.4 Mbps on hspa. Wired huh?

    • Anonymous

No offense to the phone or its users but I view it as a “teenagers will more than likely be the primary user” phone. Not that the hardware or software(this time) is childish. I’m in my late 20′s and I wouldn’t be ashamed to rock this phone IF I wanted one.

I’ll admit though there’s no reason to call it a kid/teen/adult phone. Who cares?

    • TrollSeason

Its a phone designed for teens, thats why they specifically promoting the “cloud texting” and “group texting” feature on the SK4G so all of Justin Bieber preteens fans can go hard with that. The 1ghz, mobile hotspot, and FFC is suppose to attract consumers like me and you but even my 13 yr old sister understands the magnitude of those features.

I would prefer the G2X over this girly phone any day. The Sidekick 4G with a 3 megapixel – no flash having camera will have 94% of its sales from preteens, teens 18 and under, and homosexuals. Bank on that!!

    • Senor Chang

Usually kids who don’t have any serious use for a phone say things like “too dumb to figure the phone out”.

  • http://graflex.org/klotz/ klotz

Whether or not it’s called the Sidekick I’d still be interested because of the keyboard.

    • Mobile Truth

      Thank you klotz

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TWZYRT3V27PEFL22CKGP73RXWI gray

They could’ve pushed the boundaries just a bit more by adding a 5MP camera with falsh. Even the older models had flash like the Lx… c’mon sammy stop being so damn cheap with the flash!!

    • reddz

I do agree with you right there. I mean even the SK3 in 2006 had a flash. I’m not quite sure why they dropped the ball on that. But oh well, that wont stop me from getting it LOL.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TWZYRT3V27PEFL22CKGP73RXWI gray

Yeah regardless it’s still going to be a cool phone. 1GHz processor and Android on a sidekick, wish they would’ve done that when I had the sidekick back in 08′

  • Galaxylover

I didn’t even know I was interested in this phone until now. I probably won’t get it, only because my Galaxy 4g is only 2 months old, but that keyboard looks really nice. I didn’t know it was 21mbps theoretical either. I’ll check it out on the 20th and see how it feels.

  • Jojo

Any idea if the display is Super AMOLED? Some sources on the net say it is and others say sAMOLED was dropped to keep the price of the device low.
