T-Mobile Releases Letter Addressing Customer Concerns Regarding AT&T Deal

Judging by our blog comments, Twitter comments and Facebook posts there is a terrible amount of confusion regarding the AT&T/T-Mobile buyout. In order to try and quell customer fears, confusion and anger over the upcoming deal T-Mobile has released a short statement from company COO Jim Alling attempting to address the major concerns customers may have.

Most important is the message that T-Mobile is conducting business as usual. They are still an independent company and will treat AT&T as a competitor until any deal is closed. As you may have noticed, T-Mobile’s AT&T attack ads remain on the air and are likely to remain so until a deal closes.

The letter is short and sweet and while it likely won’t defuse customer confusion and anger, at the very least it’ll show that T-Mobile is listening to customer concerns. Unfortunately, there isn’t much to say at the moment that will make current T-Mobile customers not fear the future and an uncertain future at that.


Dear Valued T-Mobile Customers

Bellevue, Wash. — Mar. 25, 2011 PDT

As you know, AT&T and Deutsche Telekom have reached an agreement for AT&T to purchase T-Mobile USA.  The combined company will provide you with a world-class platform for mobile broadband innovation and growth.

Bringing together these two world-class businesses will create significant benefits for you. The merger will ensure the deployment of a robust 4G LTE network to 95% of the U.S. population, something neither company would achieve on its own in the timeframe that would be possible with this merger.

Also, because of our compatible networks and infrastructure, you will experience improved voice and data service almost immediately after the networks are integrated.

The transaction must go through a regulatory review and approval process. We expect the review to take approximately twelve months.

Answers to Some Questions You May Have

Q:  Will I have to upgrade my T-Mobile 3G/4G device after the acquisition closes?

A: T-Mobile has no plans to alter our 3G / 4G network in any way that would make your device obsolete. The deal is expected to close in approximately 12 months.  After that, decisions about the network will be AT&T’s to make. That said, the president and CEO of AT&T Mobility was quoted in the Associated Press saying “there’s nothing for [customers] to worry about… [network changes affecting devices] will be done over time… ”

Q: Will T-Mobile USA’s quality be reduced?

A: No. In fact, the combination of AT&T and T-Mobile USA will offer an even stronger service to customers. Until the acquisition is closed, we will work hard to maintain our position as the value leader with America’s largest 4G network.

Q: Should I wait to sign-up with T-Mobile USA or upgrade my phone?

A: There is no greater time than now to become a T-Mobile customer or upgrade your service or device.         I too have been using it since the early voicestream days since it used GSM when no one else did. I have never switched since no one has ever been able to touch TMO data plans. Maybe Google will see this as an opportunity to jump back in and front an android phone to customers while negotiating with ATT for their network.

      Yeah, I feel like me the T-Mobile customer is the one taking in the rear, but it is what it is. In these type of deals someone has to take it in the shorts and sadly we T-Mobile customers are playing that part.

      I’ve been with T-Mobile/VoiceStream for 10+ years. I had plenty of chances to switch but T-Mobile never gave me a reason to do so. This news depresses me very much. I was T-Mobile’s biggest fan!

    So if your not in any commitment such as Even More +, does that mean your going to lose your plan since your technically not in a contract? and what about Installment plans, will those have to be paid in full when all the changes come about?

        but if you re read it says “For their applicable period”….time remaining
        in that period…meaning contract…so how can nothing be grandfathered if
        they say that it will be honored only for the applicable period aka whatever
        is remaining in the commitment. So those who are not in a commitment will
        they be forced to pick a new pan from att…?

      No one knows what’s going to happen, except that you’re going to have to replace your T-Mobile device(s) with AT&T once the merger is complete. That’s all that’s been announced. It’s way too early to say what’s going to happen to the T-Mobile plans. You’ll know when we know.

          Especially the way they cripple their Android devices. I think I’m going to get a GX2 just so I can ensure I have a pure Google experience BEFORE the merger completes. If you look at their history and what they do with their Android phones, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

    I think AT&T should allow T Mobile phones to connect at least to their voice networks NOW, as a show of good faith. Yeah I’m a dreamer….

      They would have to open up the LAC (as if they were the same company) otherwise the back and forth roaming would cause dropped calls and data connectivity issues.

      But it still would be a great gesture if both company’s could come to a 2G/3G4G roaming agreement with T-Mobile building upon this by expanding its 850/1900 MHz UMTS capable phones starting with the G2X by LG.

        Yes, a roaming agreement like how Orange UK and T-MO UK has, when the buyout is making good progress would be a good idea.
        And for the Apple Fanboys, maybe an Iphone with TMO 3G/HSPA bands as well, Personally I find the iphone inferior, but people swear by it and this would generate more good public relations if iphone 5 was able to be used on TMO.

        That is part of the clause of the FCC shoots it down so in short there is no way they would agree to it before hand.

    Non of my questions were answered in this Q&A. The least T-Mobile and AT&T could do is ensure us that our rate plans will not change until we want to change them. Even if we do a phone upgrade after the acquisition, I would like AT&T to publicly announce, our rate plans still won’t change. I would also like a public announcement stating that if AT&T converts T-Mobiles AWS towers to LTE, they will offer either a free upgrade to select phones or a significant discount to any phone in there line up. I think most of us will feel a lot better if these two questions were answered. In my eyes, the only way AT&T is going to keep more than 75% of T-Mobiles customers is if they answer these two questions.

      You want/expect an awful lot from a company that hasnt been bought yet. This deal hasn’t even gotten started as far as the FCC is concerned. You are basing a lot of your opinions on one big IF. None of what you want to hear is known right now, and wont be known for several months, so all your demands are just ringing hollow because EVEN IF they wanted to the customers this info, THEY CAN’T because it isn’t known!!!

      O and 85% of statistics are made up on the spot. ;)

      You’re not going to get a free upgrade and your plan is most likely going to go away once you’re forced to change to an AT&T device. Of course, I don’t know that for sure–no one does–but common sense tells me that T-Mobile customers are going to get the short end of the straw. All we know is that you are going to have to replace your T-Mobile device to and AT&T one once the merger is complete and AT&T takes over.

      Just remember the old cingular customers could not keep there rate plan once they upgrded phones. Plus once they take over they plan to use all that aws 3g and clear it off so they can use it for 4g. And they may offer you a free new 3g phone but it won’t be anything great.

    The bright side to this may apply to T-Mobile customers who may have wanted AT&T but couldn’t due to credit issues and AT&T’s deposit requirement.

    AT&T is going to let you in without a deposit or credit check at least for the lines that are migrated (additional lines may require additional credit requirements)

    T-Mobile does (for many of us) work better in urban areas than AT&T due to less congestion and better network planning. T-Mobile also builds its network much denser where available which adds to capacity. The opposite is true however in more rural areas. Most rural areas with T-Mobile only give us GPRS. AT&T has a much broader UMTS footprint. Not only will we get more HSPA service nationwide but we’ll also have a much larger voice/data footprint.

    I want this buyout to commence but with conditions of course. I think the negative press will cause AT&T to make good on these concessions.

      In theory, yes, but I think AT&T will make a lot of empty promises to T-Mobile customers to get them to stay. Perhaps I’m being too cynical, but I don’t trust anything that comes out of AT&T’s mouth. Having said that, I’m going to wait and see what happens in the next year before I make any decisions. at least I still have T-Mobile for that time period.

        I like Sprint’s plans (in comparison to Verizon and AT&T), but I don’t care for their CDMA network. Without T-Mobile I’m going to have to settle for what I think are second rate carriers. It’s like picking the lesser of 3 evils or going pre-paid.

    Jim Ailing is going to have to address the customer service issues such as ATT’s reputation for worse customer service and allegations that the TMO staff will likely be outsourced out of the USA. Maybe if the TMO staff was entirely kept ATT would have a better reputation with consumers and less people would want to flee.

      He doesn’t have to address anything because the deal isn’t written in stone. This is still a very big IF. You can start making those assumptions after the deal closes and the two sides really decide what is going to happen, but until then, why are you so worried about it? No at this point knows what will happen IF AND WHEN this deal is done. ATT knows that TMO has better CS than them, why would they get rid of an award winning CS team when that is their weakest link? Think about what you are actually saying… Then tell me if it still makes sense…

        Att reps are union protected, Tmobile reps are not.

        Att is just saying we can keep our plans and such, since its what we want to hear. But as soon as something is approved, they will feel like they own us.

        This buyout needs to blocked. I feel badly about the possibility of becoming an Att customer.

I would not invest in another phone from TMobile unless you are planning on staying with them when they merge. If you arent, you will be ripped off. Im going to Verizon as soon as my contract expires this year. I hate AT&T with a passion, and they have sucky a$$ phones.

    As we all know this sucks but T Mobile USA is having financial difficulties and someone is going to buy them out sooner or later. I would prefer AT&T over Sprint. At least T Mobile and AT &T band frequency’s are similar so the transition will be smoother. If Sprint buys them that would be a ton of sh*t to figure out because Sprint frequency is totally different. I hear a number of people saying they wish Sprint would buy T Mobile not sure why Sprint is only concerned about their business/company at this point. Think about it if this merger goes through AT&T/ T Mobile will be the largest mobile phone provider in the US with Verizon 2nd. Sprint will be 3rd and with AT&T and Verizon both having the Iphone and T Mobile having so many Andriod phones Sprint knows they are doomed.

    Don’t get me wrong I feel the same as everyone else I wish T Mo was rolllin alone but hey FCC and DOP might reject this partnership.

    I’m still going to move forward and grab me th LG Gx2 and the LG G Slate Tablet! :)

So basically once the deal is done, im going to have to pick a new plan. Either that , or im going to go to a contract plan 11 months from now to keep low prices .. if there still low.

        It is funny when I call CS right now. They urge me to get a contract so bad, they are saying that they will give me a credit worth my plan, and I’m thinking what can go wrong? once my contract is over and see that my rate goes up I can just switch, right? If this thing really happens, then I will do as what you have suggested, I’ll put all my lines into contract in about 11 months to get an additional 2 years of savings. Bad thing is that I might have to be stuck with dreadful AT&T for two years. hmm what to do??

    No one asked what I think is the obvious problem, What about the T-Mobile customer who has purchased several (4) top of the line phones and they are all going to turn into paper weights. I bought for full price over the last 1 1/2 years 4 top of the line phones G1, BB 9700, MyTouch 4G and the Nexus One. These phones will not work on the AT&T network, as I said I get stuck with about $2000.00 worth of junk. Big deal AT&T will throw me a bone with one of their phones, doesn’t cut it. I am just pissed off, I say screw me once shame on you, screw me twice shame on me. I am headed to greener pastures. I was a long time T-Mobile supporter who must have brought at least 10 new customers to them. I feel like I have been seriously hung out to dry. Anyone looking for a free paper weight?? I’m going to spend a few extra bucks and go Verizon and at least I will have a device that will not be useless in a few months.

          AT&T and T-Mobile have 100% compatible GPRS and 2G/EDGE frequencies. It’s the whole reason you can use an unlocked iPhone on T-Mobile. But the 3G spectrum is different between the two carriers, and so you will lose the use of the higher data speeds.

          Not all T-Mobile phones become paperweights when AT&T decides to shut down the AWS HSPA+ network. Only phones that don’t support either 850MHz (UMTS band V) and 1900MHz (UMTS band II). Surprisingly enough, there are a few that do support one or both of those bands. And, going forward, T-Mobile phones will support both of those bands, even if it is just so it can use AT&T’s network for data roaming.

          This only applies to data frequencies. If you don’t have/want a data plan, any current tmobile phone will work after the switch. It’s the same with using an unlocked iPhone on T-mobile. All you’ll be able to use is edge and not 3G, but you can talk and text all you want.

          They will have different frequencies for the 3g and 4g but the phones once unlocked will work just fine on the EDGE network 2G.

        It’s true they are GSM phones, but they won’t work with some of AT&T’s coverage areas.

        Most important, existing T-Mobile handsets have declined in value, mainly because people have heard of this deal and correctly or not, prospective buyers think that T-Mobile phones will simply stop working in 12 to 18 months.

          They will have “phone” service.. it’s the data that will take a hit.. probably able to get Edge, but no 3G or 4G.. although that is a long way off, it’s still a valid concern.. My current phone is coming up on 2 years use, and although I planned on replacing it, I am in limbo as to what I would get, that I could be sure would also give me 2 years use.. of course this is no big deal to a lot of enthusiasts who change their phone every 4 or 5 months when they newest uber phone comes out.

      T-Mobile is not concerned about defections to other carriers. As I said before, both AT&T and T-Mobile have accounted that millions of customers may leave T-Mobile by the time the sale is approved.

      What T-Mobile is concerned about is the wave of public opinion moving toward being against the sale. If the uproar is loud enough, Washington may not rubber stamp the sale.

      So T-Mobile has to get its customers on board with this or at least not get them upset to the point subscribers actually contact regulators and Congress to express opposition to the acquisition.

      T-Mobile and AT&T should be concerned. Public uproar to deals like this can sway Washington to where it nixes the sale.

        Exactly.. They are concerned, because it’s all a gamble.. and who knows how long it’s going to actually be before their fate is decided. They have to keep doing business as if there was no merger.. because there might not be. Imagine the damage that can be done if this goes on for 10 months before the feds say no.. That 3 billion dollars might not be enough to make up for their losses.. My contracts up in a few months, I was planning on getting a new phone but now I think I am going to just float along with the phone and plan I have until this is decided one way or the other.. Jumping ship doesn’t make much sense at this point, as I don’t see the other ships out there as any better than AT&T, and there is still the possibility that this ship might right itself.

    One more thing I want to bring up. I can not count the # of times T-Mobile has talked about the lousy customer service that their competition AT&T has. Now that they don’t want you to jump ship during this buy out, they are talking about how great this is going to be for the T-Mobile customers. This talking out of the side of your mouth business makes my freaken head just spin. They take their long time devoted customers like fools. I just think this entire situation sucks for anyone who has been a long time customer of T-Mobile.

      It does, but money talks with these big wigs. Anything they say or do while captaining the ship can be throw overboard once their pockets are filled with money. Sadly we the customers have no say in this and have to foot the bill.

      Spot on vinnyj. I would not trust a word T-Mobile says. You say T-Mobile is talking out the side of its mouth and treating its “long time devoted customers like fools.” Exactly right.

      Perhaps the best example of just how evasive T-Mobile is being is to look at its response to a supposed question, will T-Mobile be getting the iPhone. T-Mobile’s answer is so nonsensical that I don’t know why it even published the question and answer.

      As I said before, if AT&T successfully acquires T-Mobile, AT&T is free to do anything it wants to the Company, including immediately firing employees, selling its physical assets and terminating subscriber contracts. (This is extreme, but it’s important to understand the extent of AT&T’s “rights” as purchaser of T-Mobile as compared to our rights, which add up to zero, with the exception that if you don’t like it you can switch to another carrier. — if one reads between the lines of this letter, this is exactly what the dispatch says.

      People thinking their plans are grandfathered or that AT&T is obligated to do anything FOR T-Mobile customers, well… they just don’t know how things work. The correct terminology is that AT&T will be in a legal position to do anything it wants to do WITH or TO T-Mobile customers.

      Personally, I think AT&T does not want to absorb most of T-Mobile’s subscribers. AT&T wants the spectrum licenses and will probably only accept those customers willing to pay AT&T’s high prices, without griping about it.

      As far as AT&T is concerned, it considers T-Mobile subscribers whining cheapskates who can head on over to prepaids or Sprint. I don’t expect to see AT&T do anything to attract or convince T-Mobile customers to move on over to AT&T.

    I am planning to stay with T-Mobile until their service goes to hell or ATT changes my rate plan. I am definitely not planning to pay the outrageous rates that ATT has, because I truly belief that people who pay such rates are either without a choice or too obsess with the iPhone (I am trying not to insult anyone). I am one of the lucky people who get a 20% rate plan discount through my company, and still I can’t afford a plan comparable (but never equal) to my 1500 minutes and UNLIMITED text and data (including occasional tethering) plan from T-Mobile. The plan from ATT would cost me almost $30 more than what I am paying now.

    In the worst case scenario, I think that I would go to Sprint or MetroPCS, just for being the underdogs now and give them a try. There is always Verizon that even though has high rate plans, at least you know that you will receive your calls, your phone won’t be restricted to what apps you can install (this only applies to Android users, which is the norm for iPhone users, no hating just stating a fact) and their LTE system is already up and running.

    Maybe, we are all wrong and ATT will decide to implement T-Mobile’s organizational culture regarding customer service and plan pricing, giving some comfort to the loyal T-Mobile customers, oh wait… I just remember one little-tiny-thing, after the merger, we, THE CUSTOMERS, are going to own $39 BILLIONS to Deutsche Telekom, yes, WE ARE GOING TO GET STUCK WITH THAT BILL!!! So, rate plans are not going to stay at the same level (read above: “All customer contracts entered into before the change of ownership will be honored [for their applicable period].”), you phone won’t work in the new system, which they will replace it for the cheapest-crappiest phone that they can find (because that the only comparable phone to your old one), and customer service reps are going to treat you like crap, because they are probably treated like crap as well, by their supervisor, SO RETHINK POSSIBLE!!!

    T-Mobile USA has SUDDENLY CHANGED some information on their Q&A page so people who either did not get a chance to read the initial one or simply was not paying attention will not find it anymore. Mistakenly, they still left the original one on the second post of this message here:

    The newly rewritten Q&A has clearly removed the question and answer stating the following:

    “If the acquisition closes, will I still be able to use my T-Mobile USA phone?
    Yes. Your T-Mobile USA device will operate the same in the future as it does today”

    And in addition to removing this, T-Mobile has basically written in that when AT&T takes over, they can do what they want with the network. Here is what they now say that is different from the the first Q&A:

    “Q: Will I have to upgrade my T-Mobile 3G / 4G device after the AT&T acquisition closes?
    T-Mobile has no plans to alter our 3G / 4G network in any way that would make your device obsolete.

    T-Mobile didn’t even bother to change the date on the communication and left it as March 20th, lol!

    THE BOTTOM LINE IS T-Mobile is trying to keep it’s customers from jumping ship by attempting to sell them on this AT&T sellout/buyout. Word to the wise and all who have already been there, AT&T IS NOTHING NICE! If you choose to stay with AT&T when/if this deal goes through, you will be paying higher prices for mobile phone and customer service that is worse than T-Mobile. AT&T has already revealed what their plans are one they are allowed to gobble up T-Mobile. Here T-Mobile is trying to push new 4G (1700~2100 HSPA+) devices, yet now they are saying that once AT&T takes over, they can do what they want with the network. I don’t know about you, but to me this smells like a RAW DEAL until both AT&T and T-Mobile come clean with honest details.

      My Faves will probably be gone but then you start using apps like Viber or Tribair or Mobyler. Placing calls over these apps will not use your minutes. They go over your data plan. Of course you have to HAVE a data plan.

      If you’re under contract, the better chance they will honor it for the length of your contract. If you’re out of contract, don’t be suprised if they start phasing it out a few months after they take over. AT&T has alist for now (basically the same as myfaves but there is a minimum plan), plus when you sign up for unlimted messaging you get unlimited mobile to any mobile(any carrier).

    Here’s my thoughts,and they suck!
    When ATT owns TMobile, they have said the will deploy their LTE network on TMobile’s HSPA+ bands. So, your high speed data will be back to the GPRS/EDGE dark ages.
    Please note the following point and start running for the hills:
    You will not be on TMobile GPRS/EDGE, you will be on the already beleaguered ATT infrastructure!
    You will be adding your Millions, AND MILLIONS, of The Magenta’s fans to the ATT network of calldrops and lacking customer service. The result will be a much worse calling experience. Maybe ATT has some plans to keep some Magenta towers, i dunno. It doesn’t sound likely.
    Those of you who get new phones, please pray for LTE Data and Talk. That’ll be the only good thing.
    I was about to get a G2X or Pyramid till this broke. Thankfully, the EVO 3D on sprint pretty much is a Pyramid and then some. I will get that. I want my talk and data bad, but, not bad enough to get in bed with ATT at the moment.
    I pray it doesn’t go through. For customers who deserve a better choice and tMobile was looking to kick Blue’s arse this year really. I would like to see the FCC say ‘Nuh uh, come back in a few years when we maybe have Cricket at a National level,and maybe even 2 more national competitors’. It’s a BIG country. That’s kind of why it’s hard to have a national competitor, but, we don’t even have alot of strong Regional competitors. Why? It’s pretty much a function of spectrum. There’s only so much width.

          Mmunson is right. I’m definitely going for the G2X when it comes out (probably in a month or so now, eh?) It’s got the quadband compatibility so it should be fine using AT&T’s 3G networks if it ever comes down to having to use AT&T.

          Also, if I don’t want to be with AT&T when the time comes.. I can just cancel out of the T-Mo contract before its amended to throw me under AT&T’s roof.

          From my point of view, it seems like a really great time to buy into T-Mobile because there’s just going to be a lot of options when the time comes, I believe. I’ll eat my words if I end up getting screwed later on, but as for now, I’m optimistic.

    AT&T has started a blitz to steal all of TMobile’s business customers by offering businesses breaks to cover early termination fees. If the merger doesn’t happen, Tmobile will be dead. AT&T’s promises are hollow to me.

    I suspect a large majority of the buying public is staying away from T-Mobile phones, simply because they think that T-Mobile the company will be no more quite soon.

    Have T-Mobile sales suffered? We shall see. IMHO in a few months there will be stories with the headline “T-Mobile’s Sales Significantly Decline On Consumers Hearing About AT&T Acquisition.”

    I may be wrong, but generally on hearing stories like this (including that a company will vanish) people stop buying that company’s product. Remember how badly Detroit sales suffered on hearing car manufacturers needed govt. bailouts to save the industry from closing its doors.

    The buying public does not understand nor deal with the nuances of these kinds of acquisitions. All they believe is that T-Mobile will be no more in about 12 months. People don’t buy into or subscribe to company BS such as T-Mobile’s letter, FAQ answers or the load of bullsheet published on the Carriers’ specially published web pages.

    Sidenote: If things get too out of hand, as I said before, expect AT&T to announce that on approval of the acquisition it will keep operating T-Mobile as a separate entity or division. If this fixes things, watch AT&T slowly (say five years or so) merge T-Mobile into AT&T, to where in 2017 T-Mobile has vanished.

    That’s a far better way to do it, so to calm people down and quell opposition to the deal.

    Considering I work for T-Mobile and my husband works for AT&T…. any time that a merger/buyout happens especially with T-Mobile involved, customer will have a short period where they can cancel their service with no penalty or early termination fees. It’s the BEST time to get T-Mobile service (not at&t) service because you signed your contract with them, not at&t. So when the merger goes through you have a specific time period where you can cancel and not continue service with at&t. Its the perfect opportunity to get service then get to cancel without paying $200 ETF.

      I’d only do it if you’re fine with getting into a two year contract. Then treat it as some good luck if you’re able to get out early.

        Sparced, legally AT&T can’t hold the customer accountable to fullfill contract terms with them when the customer originally signed the contract with T-Mobile. When T-Mobile purchased VoiceStream, OmniPoint, and Suncom, any customer who called during a specific time period (I believe each time it was 60 days) they had the right to cancel their contract and have the penalty waived. ]]

        With that being said though, T-Mobile was offering some amazing deals to keep these customers to renew their contract with T-Mobile. T-Mobile will usually send a very vague, long, descriptive, detailed “bill insert” that may look like revised terms and conditions or an advertisement, but really it’s a disclosure telling you your time period to “opt out” during the merger. Then if you miss it, then it’s your fault, you should have read the 43546546565 page terms and conditions.

          Anytime the terms of your contract change drastically, Tmobile has to inform you of the change and gives you an option to either accept or cancel without penalty. This isn’t mortages or nba contracts, so the same rules don’t apply. When you owe a debt to someone or are being paid for your services, that can be transferred or sold, ie., mortages, car loans, nba contracts and the like. I didn’t sign up with AT&T, I signed with T-mobile, therefore the terms of my contract have changed and the contract can be voided by either party technically. AT&T won’t void them because they don’t want to piss off 34 million subscribers. They also know that it’s not worth forcing a small percentage to stay and creating bad press. When AT&T bought cingular I got out of my contract without penalty and went to tmobile.
          I left Tmobile 6 months ago, but plan on coming back when the G2x is released. I get a great deal on sprint (2 lines, 1500 mins, unlimited messages/data, unlimited any mobile to any mobile for only $121/month after all taxes and fees), but their coverage gives me alot of problems. I go from 5 bars to no bars to 2 bars to 1X and back to 3g too often in L.A. I really wish sprint worked better for me because it is such a great deal. I was gonna switch to AT&T because I can get a good deal on 3 lines, but I want to lock in an unlimited data with tmobile before it goes the way of the dodo. Think about it, AT&T will have no problem letting you leave without a termination fee just so they can get rid of your unlimited data. If you are AT&T, you want to try to get rid of all the plans that make you little money. If I were on an unlimited loyalty plan out of contract, I would renew my contract in a few months as insurance for being able to keep it or get out of it without penalty. If you ‘re under contract and at&t tries to change your plan, you can get out without penalty for sure. I call that insurance. Also if you’re under contract, the chances they’ll honor your plan are way better than if you’re out of contract with a loyalty plan. There are some people that pay like $10 dollars for data a month, AT&T will most certainly try to get rid of those plans as soon as possible.

          i’m skeptical since AT&T will own the company you signed the contract with. They aren’t just transferring/selling certain customers and changing the agreements.

          I won’t doubt that T-mobile may have let Voicestream customers out of their contracts, but I wonder if there was a different reasoning behind why they did it.

          I don’t think Verizon let Alltel customers out of their contracts.

          i am an attorney. most boilerplate contracts contain language that customers are liable to perform even when the original contract is assigned or is sold to a third party. think about your home mortgage loan…and how many time that was bought and sold.

          That’s correct.
          I sell rental properties and the lease transfers to the new owner. In fact, it’s part of what sells the property. The new owner factors the income from the lease(s) and plans renovations & restructured future leases accordingly. Same thing with any legal contract, including Mobile Services.

          AT& T may release people for 60 days (or whatever), but that’s a move to increase their reputation in the industry… it’s not a requirement.

      ATT has already said once the takeover is complete we will only be able to get edge speeds, and if we want 3G/4G network access we will have to upgrade our hardware. So I’d imagine any surplus of phones will become useless once the merger is complete.

          The T-Mobile G2X, the Nokia Astound, the Dell Streak 7, and the T-Mobile G-Slate all support UMTS 850/1700/1900/2100. The Motorola DEFY supports UMTS 850/1700/2100. The Samsung Vibrant and Samsung Galaxy S 4G support UMTS 1700/1900/2100. All of the aforementioned devices are fine if you care to future proof for when they shut off the HSPA+ network on AWS five years after the acquisition is complete.

    I hope this deal is blocked. I dont’t want DT to get all of this money and stock for essentially kicking us to the curb because they dont want to invest in the US market. DT can kiss my ass at this point. These are all mostly lies. Integration will be a nightmare. Hopefully they find somepme that can take T-Mobile USA (just us ALONE) to the next level but i doubt it.

        Actually, it is quite possible the iPhone 5 will support T-Mobile’s AWS band, since the iPhone 5 will likely use Qualcomm’s Gobi chip and be a dual mode device.

    This is Bulls@#$ to the customer. TMobile dropped the customer in it, left us hanging, did not give us a choice. Tmobile did what was best to tmobile , not the customer. None of these companies would be where they are today without customers. Don’t let the customer take the heat for bad decision made by their management. Folks, we are the ones paying the salaries of the Bulls@#$ management idiots they employed that screwed things up….if employed the right people who were customer focused ( meaning giving us better choices), they would be more profitable. What happen the people of the USA having choices…seems to me as those choice are already made for us!!!

    If they really want to the right thing for their customer, they will not charge customers the termination fee , if we do not want to go with ATT. I was with them before switching to tmobile…there is reason why I left them.

      Actually, in Europe, there’s usually only three carriers that offer 3G to choose from. However, unlike in the United States, European networks are harmonized (that is, they use the same frequencies and technologies), which allows for the customer to choose any carrier he or she wants, and use any device he or she wants. The UK is the exception to the rule though, since they have at least five different carriers competing on 3G. They are all still harmonized though.

      In Europe, there’s usually the state-owned telecom, Vodafone, and a third-party network. Sometimes there are more carriers, sometimes there are less, but the general average is three networks per European state. Usually if there are more, there’s usually only three networks that offer 3G services. Sometimes if there is only two, only one of them offers 3G service. However, all phones sold in Europe pretty much work on all networks in Europe.

      In Asia, all carriers aside from the state-owned one are regional (with the exception of Japan). With the exception of Japan, Asia is harmonized with Europe’s frequency bands.

      Japan, true to form, is more like the United States than the rest of Asia. They have some running OHA CDMA (meaning CDMA with a RUIM/SIM card), and some running UMTS. The frequency bands are not harmonized at all in Japan. Only two networks offer UMTS 2100 right now (NTT docomo and Softbank Mobile). eMobile uses UMTS 1700 (non-AWS). NTT docomo Kansai offers UMTS 1700 and UMTS 2100, which can be configured to act as AWS, but usually isn’t. KDDI au uses CDMA with EVDO on CDMA 800. NTT docomo also offers UMTS 800 service. Softbank Mobile offers UMTS 1500 service.

      India is gradually rolling out UMTS 2100 service across the nation, but only through regional circles for non-state-owned carriers. BSNL, the state owned carrier, rolled out UMTS 2100 service across the whole nation years ago, but the service quality is extremely bad.

    AT&T will be most likely be required to ‘sell’ 40% of T-mobile customers to a bidding (lower end) phone company as many at FCC already said would happen. Selling off chunks of customer is called “divestiture.” So when you see AT&T using it; you know what it means. After a sale, we would now be relegated to boost mobile and the like. Verizon is not going to bid on low-end customers.

    UNLESS, of course, you wish to pay AT&T’s crazy high rates for the same services (then AT&T would keep you). Let them build out their own LTE and buy bandwidth with the loads of money they have.

    The FCC will be allowing a monopoly if this goes through and I”m not sure is verizon will compete when AT&T is done.

    They are going to carve up Tmobile into pieces and they don’t care about the customer base.

      That’ll benefit AT&T becuase they’ll be able to off-load all those high risk flexpay subscribers on the network . I used to work for t-mobile a few years ago and boy do they have lots of churn because of flexpay. I’m sure AT&T will keep the customers with good bill paying history and credit, i’m also sure the rest will offload to sprint or metro PCS or something else of the like. At least i’ll get better service at my house now where i live, AT&T works great, T-Mo not so much :-( so i for one am looking forward to this. My t-mobile plan is only 15 dollars cheaper than a comparable at&t plan and i’m willing to pay that so i don’t have to depend on UMA anymore at my house.

If it doesn’t, T-Mobile gets to tell it’s customers that during this 12 month period, they increased the 4G network they already had, and now they have $3 Billion to continue expansion. (3 Billion is how much AT&T has to pay T-Mobile if the deal fails)

    we all knew something was going on with tmobile (back with the verizon rumors) that they’d sell/merge with another company. frankly i’m happy its going to be with ATT and not verizon. verizon is way overpriced compared to ATT IMO. and as long as our rates are locked and i am not forced into a new contract i’ll be happy. we can sit here and bitch about it but A. whats the point if we arent even sure the merger will be allowed, and B. there is nothing we can really do about any of this anyways.

        Well i dunno what kinda plan u got but i pay 79.99 for unlimited everything , even more plus plan. Even the contract plan with tmobile is 99.99 for unlimited everything. Those same plans are 145 with taxes on verizon so THATS why people are complaining.

    OK – so I just paid $499 for the Samsung Galaxy S 4G. What happens in 12 months. I am on the plus “no contract”. Will my phone work on the combined network Mr. COO?

      My understanding is that 3G devices will not work after the switch, but 4G devices will. Is this correct???

        I don’t think T-mobile USA has any true 4G LTE service as they don’t have the money for such a massive build-out.

        Probably for the first year or two after the merger you’ll be fine. After that it sounds like AT&T will probably start offering upgrade deals to transition T-mobile customers off that 3G spectrum so that they can use it for true 4G LTE service.

        It gets a little sketchy if the government forces AT&T to sell off customers to someone like Sprint who doesn’t even use GSM. I guess Sprint would have to offer some sort of phone upgrade deal right away.

      Galaxy 4G is a Pentaband phone. At&t is rolling out hspa+, which is what the Motorola Atrix is running on. You’re Galaxy 4G can be unlocked and will run on AT&T’s 3g/hspa+ network, so yes, your phone will work.
