T-Mobile Finally Ends The Sidekick (OS) Line, Effective May 2011

Just when I thought it was safe to get a good nights sleep, I wake up and see that T-Mobile has effectively killed off the Sidekick line effective May 31, 2011. That’s right, you read that correctly, T-Mobile has sent out an early morning press release informing the media that Danger (a subsidiary of Microsoft these days) will no longer offer data services on Sidekick devices after the aforementioned date. As a reminder Sidekicks are, in total honesty not really good for anything without the data connection to Danger. Current Sidekick users are going to have to start the hunt for a new device and with that, T-Mobile has said they’ll “provide offers for our Sidekick customers before May 31, 2011, to help make an easy transition from their existing Sidekick device to a new device. We will have more information to share about these offers with our customers in the weeks ahead.”

While we can only hope these “offers” are something along the lines of “ridiculously inexpensive upgrade,” the Sidekick 4G is on the horizon ushering in a new era in the Sidekick world.

Sidekick users wishing to keep their data will be able to transition via an “enhanced Web Tool” available through myT-Mobile.com to export all personal data including contacts, photos, calendars and more.

There you have it, Sidekick RIP. Let’s hope going to sleep early tonight doesn’t let me wake up tomorrow and see that T-Mobile has killed off the Magenta color.

Full Press Release:

After May 31, 2011, the Danger Service (a subsidiary of Microsoft) used by T-Mobile Sidekick customers for data services will no longer be available on Sidekick devices.

T-Mobile will provide offers for our Sidekick customers before May 31, 2011, to help make an easy transition from their existing Sidekick device to a new device. We will have more information to share about these offers with our customers in the weeks ahead.

To ensure the best possible transition for our loyal Sidekick customers, an enhanced Web tool is available on myT-Mobile.com to easily export their personal data, including contacts, photos, calendar, notes, to-do lists, and bookmarks, from the Danger service to a new device, computer, or a designated e-mail account.  An application is also available in the Sidekick Catalog to make it easy to export personal data to the Sidekick’s memory card.  Many T-Mobile stores can transfer data from that card to a new T-Mobile device if the customer brings in the memory card and Sidekick.

A conspiracy theorist might wonder if the famous Microsoft/Danger data outage might have been the first salvo in Microsoft trying to eliminate smart phone competition!!!

      • Joesholidaysales2010

        Two quick points:

        1) Once Danger was acquired by Microsoft, they were no longer “Competition”, so it would have made no sense to sabotage them.

        2) Once iOS and Android arrived on the scene, Danger OS itself was really no competition, period.

I had 2 SK1′s (the original then color tri-band version) the SK2 and SKLX. I was going to get the 09 but went with G1 instead and the rest is history. I miss my SK’s, it was easy to use, fun to flip open and just a good user experience. Keeping my eye out for the SK4G to see what its all about…..that just may be my next phone.

So we can expect the Sidekick 4G by the end of May. That’s cool and I bet sidekick owners get a nice discount on the SK4G price so that they will remain loyal customers.

Sidekick 4g will be here end of may?

  • McGuinness89

There obviously not killing off the sidekick line but they are killing danger servers

    • http://twitter.com/FR35HM1NDZ Jamille Browne

      Maybe thats a good thing.

      • mac

well yeah ofc, danger os and there servers were horrible. plus android beats all

    • Motherslove

They aren’t killing off the sidekick but if you have a sidekick other than the new one they are selling then you can’t do anything besides talk and sometimes get regular text messages. No data service even with the new services, no picture messages and crappy texting service that only works part of the time. Oh and no back up so if you add a new contact you can’t have it send to your tmobile web account to save it. And here in about 2 months you will not even be able to make or receive calls on any sidekick besides the new one so if you can’t afford to get a new phone and can’t upgrade you have to pay for a line that you can’t use unless you pay to cancel your contract. Oh and no discounts if you can’t upgrade. Just full price phones.

  • Mittens

this is ridiculous. I’m no Android hater but I love the Danger OS. I mean it had the first cloud services before other software companies were even thinking about it. Why get rid of it in a time where cloud services are on the rise. But I refuse to buy any other phone so I guess it will have to do.

    • Mac

Lol danger os and its servers were horrible, everybody misses phone calls and gets txts late.. atleast back when it was popular. Android should be more reliable

      • Ex-SKLX09 User

phone calls and texts didn’t go through the danger servers

        • Mac

maybe it was a hardware issue then because as soon as i switched from the sidekick (and i had mostly all of them) i received all calls and txts on time

When you consider the guy who founded Danger left and founded Android, wouldn’t it be logical to assume that had Danger remained free of MS, they would have eventually developed Android themselves?

Like many of you, I shall miss the Danger OS and the Sidekick line of the past. After hearing conflicting reports regarding the OS & its fate I finally did some digging around and according to various reports (AP) Microsoft decided they would no longer support the Danger OS. Why? Well, Microsoft who owns the subsidiary that was overseeing development, support, etc. re-allocated these sources to focus their efforts on the Windows 7 Mobile OS instead. Not to mention that Microsoft also holds the licensing & rights to the Danger OS. Sounds like Microsoft is out to get rid of some competition. At any rate, T-mobile without the option of renewing a contract for further development etc.had to rethink the line and the possible future of Sidekicks. Difficult I am sure. Personally, I love android and feel that it could easily be tailored to simulate the best of the Danger OS features while also adding more with the android market where you can download tons of games and apps galore. It does also make the line more versatile and more appealing to a broader customer base while still retaining the look & feel of the phone itself. Like I said before, Danger OS will be missed. For I really loved the Sidekick line and I hope that this re-imagining brings it back with a BANG! Here’s to the future…

I believe that. When it happened the first thing I did was blame MicroSuck…

    • Senor Chang

Pretty sure MS bought into Danger to help develop more MS mobile devices… pretty much how all the tech companies do. Google buys Grand Central, now you have Google Voice. Its no different.

The Kin was a product of the Danger + MS merger. But it was such a failure. MS is to blame for Danger’s downfall, but that’s hardly intentional. They screwed up yes, but not ‘eliminating the competition’. Sidekick was a cult favorite and MS was thinking Danger could bring that same ‘magic’ over to them. The whole thing is a setback for MS as well… all that resource pumped into Kin, then having to re-focus on WP7. Its no wonder they were “late to the game”.

By the way… the original founder of Danger, Andy Rubin, worked for Apple, founded WebTV, sold WebTV to MS, founded Danger, left Danger after being bought by MS, then went and founded Android, then got bought by Google and continues to work for Google/Android

It really does sadden me to hear this bit of news. I had an original SKC I bought and every single model after it. I even went and bought a SK3 D.Wade since the white was just so nice LOL. I guess we’ll just need to wait and see what the Samsung version will be. I have an upgrade available in April so hopefully soon I wont need to worry about my dumb vibrant any more. Sorry after using Sidekicks for so long I seriously can’t stand virtual keyboards AHHH!!!

  • justmee

Why has T-Mobile been quiet on the next Sidekick(s)? Wouldn’t they want at least, to try to keep the current Sidekickers from jumping over to other phones?

….. Annnnd the last of the cheap unlimited data plans on T-Mobile goes away. $19.99 per month for unlimited data and text.

I know this isnt the right spot to ask anyone this but I figured someone here would know, how can I set a 8900 curve back to factory form, erasing all info. I’m passing it on and I need to do this.

what about the side kick 4 g and will I be able to use my side kick just for the phone app part or will it be doa

    • Aerofanbig

SK4G is made by Samsung and will sport an Android OS…..so other then in name its a different phone then the previous SK’s

  • Missyboo4u

This sucks. I really like the Sidekick. I think the iPhones are cool but I’d really rather have my Sidekick, as T-Mobile (was) affordable. I had better be able to keep my $19.99 data plan when I have to switch phones and I had better be able to switch to a new phone for free because I don’t have money to throw out on a new phone. This is unfair to your customers!! If I have to pay for a new device, I’d be better off using that money to cancel my T-Mobile contract and go with AT&T. At least with AT&T I expect this kind of unfairness.

    • Aerofanbig

      lol really? wow.
Ok, you’re not likely going to be able to keep that plan. And unless you are ready for an upgrade, no free new phone…and even if you ARE ready for an upgrade, the only free phones are crappy. This is not T-mobiles fault, so don’t blame them. Blame Microsoft for pulling support from Danger OS, thats who you should be bitching about.

      • Jmireles1987

Well I have no business with MIcrosoft I made a deal with Tmobile so as far as I know the face to all this is T-Mobile and they have to respond with a very very very good deal for us sidekick users. I have four lines with tmobile and two of them have the sidekick plan on them. If tmobile thinks i’m getting another agreement due to this mess up that to me is their fault as i said before no deal was done with microsoft then they must be wrong. I’ve been a loyal customer for 8years and this is likely to make me leave the company…

    • Mcm242

You will not keep your 19.99 data plan. Why would you? SK.. web service is 19.99.. you will not be using a old SK sooooo….. yeah. Switching phones your web price will go to one of these prices depending on your rate plan. 10 for 200 MB… 15 for 200 MB… 20 for unlimited web…(promo rate plans that extend contract) 30 for unlimited plan (rate plans that do not extend your contract).

    • Nikki1016

I loved sidekicks to, when i went to the store, they didnt know how to help me at first. Then told me if i switch to another pnone i was looking at a big price increase because they are no longer offering the $19.99 data plan.

  • Tyrone M Jackson

At least they are killing it officially, rather than killing it by neglect like they are the myTouch line. Remember, it’s now 10 months running that T-Mobile has been saying “the myTpouch 3G Slide will be getting Android 2.2 soon”. Apparently “soon” at T-Mobile is on the order of at least a year. Can I pay my bill “soon”?

    • Jutecat

give up like i have and root the device. its an awesome phone once you get rid of that crappy glitchmachine software

    • Mcm242

The updates to go to 2.2 is controlled by HTC not T-Mobile.

  • Jack

What about the games, Android games suck. Scabble?

  • Jack

Will Sidekick 4G have cool games like Danger offered? Android games suck

  • HeyT

What if my 2 year contract hasn’t ended with my Sidekick but I don’t want to stick with the Sidekick anymore due to not having the Data Service anymore. Can I still buy a new phone?

    • Timothy Webb

Yes, you can buy a new mobile device but there are not going to give you a discount. I had experienced that same problem yesterday. It is not fair to customer who had a sidekick and the only way to get a phone phone is to sign for an additional two years that crazy!

      • HeyT

They still wont give you the 50% discount that Samsung has given us that we can use sometime before May?

      • Mcm242

This is incorrect. T-Mobile released a response they will offer 50% off a new handset. Have the letter on my desk and verified.

        • FrugalGuy

Their “50% discount” is off the retail price of only Samsung phones, according to the TMobile customer service rep that I spoke with for 45 minutes. That means, you actually pay MORE for it than the prices listed on the T-Mobile site. Definitely not a ‘deal’.

        • Motherslove

That is actually a lie. I am on chat with t-mobile now and am a sidekick customer and they said since my line is not eligable for an upgrade I will have to pay full price for a different phone and my sidekick data has already stopped working. Can’t get picture messages or send them, and when I get a txt message now my phone only shows the phone number not the contact name. They are not offering discounts to those that can’t upgrade yet or those who do not wish to sign a new contract if they are eligable to do so.

  • Blackwindzero

my only true concern is will the existing users be able to TRADE IN for a PRICE reduction their Sidekick LX 09 for this newer one when it finally comes out (because IMO I find it unfair for existing users to go out and buy a newer phone just because Services will be cut off), this just doesn’t feel right that you’ll have to get snagged into a brand new 2 year contract just to upgrade your existing services

  • Mcm242

Danger system dropped the ball. T-Mobile is going to offer a discount to those who want to switch to a new phone no matter how long it has been since their last upgrade. Having had a sidekick I am glad they are ditching the program. It cost way to much money for the company to maintain. I had a chance to see the Sidekick Android phone hands on. Are you going to have to give up your 19.99 SK plan? Yes, you will. Anyone who honestly thinks SK system is better then Android is very out of date and has only touch the surface of a the android market.

Where are all those people who complained during the 3 month outage Danger fixed slower then snails? Why would you want to stick with a program like that? T-Mobile lost faith in Danger ever since then because of the situation Danger put T-Mobile customers in! T-Mobile is smart enough and heard enough complaining about SKs on Danger to realize enough is enough. We are cutting strings.

Great move. The future phones in the next 5 years are going to Androids. Get used to the idea. Yes BB, Windows and Iphones will still be around but the sales of Androids will explode.

  • Thomasmiller919

Im curious to know…. what if you use a sidekick on a monthly/prepaid plan, will tmobile give a price reduction or free device (whatever the choice thats made) to those customers? i think they should do a trade in kind of program where a person brings in their sidekick and can trade up to the new one or anther device… that would be pretty cool

  • GUEST

sorry but i cannot understand something.. my aunt just bought me my sidekick lx 09 but it is not yet unlock and she sent my phone from california to philippines.. now, i just read this news this afternoon and i am confused, i cannot use my sidekick anymore even if i am here in philippines? and is my sidekick phone is running by danger service?

    • Liliana

You can use your sidekick if you have it unlocked (Greenhills?). But it will be limited to Call & Text mode. No internet.

  • Arimed18

I have the sidekick lx and was told about a promo. . when I called and asked about it they said they couldnt help me. waht am I suppose to do the bill hasnt changed with or without the data plan. I want a new phone are a much cheaper plan

  • Iluvmysef1

    BRING BACK THE OLD SIDEKICKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
    I AM NOT KIDDING

  • Liliana

A Sidekick without a swivel is not a sidekick. Samsung fails with Sidekick 4G. Don’t they get it? Sidekick sells because it’s unique and cool. Now, it’s just like any other android qwerty phone. It doesn’t even compare to HTCs and SEs qwerty ones. Not even a flash? Samsung fail.

  • IVANSFRESH

    Sidekick=Swivel Screen

Bring back the old sidekicks but with the new upgrades. Is that too hard to ask?

DANGER Inc. stop being stupid and give up the swivel screen if your not going to use it!!

  • guest

i wanna know if i can trade my sidekick lx for the sidekick 4g

  • Sirenatroxa

I was just wondering I know the internet on the sidekick lx is gone but does that mean no picture messages too? I heard someone say they you get send or receive those ethier. All you can do is call and text regular.? Is this true?

  • Juhas1

I am so p[issed off at this change. I dispise the 4g sidekick with a passion. I dispise touch screen phones even more. Danger and Tmobile  better do something to get their customers back!!!!!!!
