MobileCity Offers T-Mobile G-Slate Pre-order For $699

Oh those silly online resellers. MobileCity has just put up a holding page for the T-Mobile G-Slate with a price of $699.99. Of course this price is subject to change and this is just a placeholder so it’s possible this could disappear entirely and reappear with a price higher or lower so you can’t say you haven’t been warned. If you needed a reason to break open the piggybank for 3D tablet goodness, I’d say now is the time. Still no official word from T-Mobile as to when we can expect an official launch, however our intel places this device on store shelves right around March 23rd.

is that price on or off contract?

That’s a placeholder price, so it’s not official. I would say that would be the off contract price. That would be scary if it was a subsidized price. However, if I had money to blow and wanted to get a tablet, that would be the tablet I would get.

Why is it so difficult for these companies to sell their tablets in two forms? One wifi only and one with 3g/4g and wifi. I’m sure I’m not the only one who doesn’t care for the data plan.

One fruit company actually did it this way and sold a boatload…Oh well, more waiting for me I guess.

    • Joeshmoe21

It’s marketing. Let’s say WiFi only tablet costs $20 less to make. How much less are you going to charge for it? $20 less? People will look at the price tag and still buy the more expensive one with 3G. So you have to make it appear more desirable to people to by the 3G-less tablet. Make it a $100 less? Then you are loosing $80 that you could have charged for the WiFi/3G combined tablet.

      • whosaidwhat

Well, part of what you said is true for the people who don’t know the true value of these tablets. If notion ink can sell the same hardware for 40 – 50% lesser than the big names, then the big names are obviously overpriced.

I personally think the real value of these tablets will be determined after the fruit company makes their announcement tomorrow. I don’t want one but I know their pricing will drive the market price.

Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tablet Unlocked with US 3g spec:
    Retail Price: $1,299.99
    Our Price:$599.99

    LG T-Mobile G Slate 4G Tablet:
    Retail Price: $799.99
    Our Price:$699.99

Their prices are out of wack and seemingly higher than what we expect to pay in the store.

I bought my unlocked galaxy tab for 1299.99. I bought it from the same guy that I bought my crack from. He had a special going on…buy the crack, smoke it, wait a couple minutes, buy the galaxy tab for 1299.99. I was iffy on it at first, but after that crack, that sounded like a great idea!

*the above story is fictional. The author hasn’t ever purchased or used crack, or has purchased or even seen the galaxy tab in person. Althought he did see a moose once.*

Google it. Nah I’m just messin witchu. There is an HDMI out but no SD slot just like the XOOM and the Galaxy Tab 10.1

      • whosaidwhat

The Xoom has a microsd card slot and USB. The Toshiba tablet has an SD card, multiple USB ports and HDMI.

I did google it but couldn’t find a full list of specs.

        • Anonymous

My bad, wrong about the XOOM alright. Hard to say about the G-Slate with 100% certainty.

  • SkepticAL

Tablets are cool and all that, but seriously are they worth this type of price tag??

    • Anonymous

Nope not at all. There will/are definitely comparable alternatives to these overpriced carrier versions such as the Notion Ink Adam. Tablets like this G-Slate will be $400-500 come christmas time easily.

      • Nosir

or less….like 200 or 149…..that’s a lot of time between now and Q4.

          D!@# $149?? Off contract?

        • whosaidwhat

$150 to $200 wont happen on a contract free tablet for a long time. They have to make money you know.

I will buy the G-Slate on day One and by Christmas I will have bought a New Tablet and give my G-Slate to someone I know who needs one. I’m always going to update them so no big deal for me. : )

        • Anonymous

Ohh Mr. Mon-E-bags is buying tooo. lol nah thats cool cuz this thing will be “outdated” once them quad cores come out.

    • whosaidwhat

$700 – $800? That will be a big fat NO!

I demoed the Xoom yesterday at best buy and first impression was “wow, this thing is nice”. Fast, solid built like a tank, Windows like UI, youtube app was slick, and did I mention fast? Then all of a sudden it hit me that they wanted $800 for it. The price isn’t helping any of the Android tablet manufactures. Hopefully, they’lll figure it out after tomorrow.

BTW…I thought $550 – $600 was the right price point for the Xoom and I believe the G-Slate must be around the same price point to be successful. Wifi only or no buy.

  • Not4sakn

considering a full blown desktop pc or laptop can be bought at the same price and lower with greater specs, tablets are way over priced.

    • whosaidwhat

I used to compare tablet prices to laptop prices too before I realized that they were two different animals serving two different markets. Sure you can compare them because they have some similarities but tablets are much more portable, weighs a lot less than laptops, double the battery life and runs thousands of applications specifically made for the tablet platform. They have things like gps and accelerometer and full touchscreens built in.

Personally, I use my laptop to strictly browse the web so a tablet with honeycomb will be a nice replacement for me. All that being said, $700 to $800 doesn’t appeal to a lot of us. Netbook prices will be more realistic.

  • Manusferrera

This whole tablet fiasco is like blu ray players remember when They were 1200 dollars for one and now u can get one for like 80 just wait a while and people will get over them.

    • Anonymous

And the best part is EVERYBODY is making android Tablet now. With all these “Quality” tablets looking exactly the same with exactly the same OS, the price is really the only competitive aspect. No tablet until Black Friday at the soonest for me.

      • Auser72

        ^^what he said^^

        • frigadroid

Me three I won’t bite until I see the price around $300 like a netbook. I don’t care if its 2012 I don’t have a need for one anyway.

        • ihatefanboys

they have $300 android tablets right now cheapo. they just suck, but being cheap as u are im sure u dont care.

    • Vibrant Addict

I don’t think it’s comparable to blu-rays. Just look at the smartphones. Instead of the price dropping, it’s actually going higher for off contract. These companies are banking on these big ticket items and they only add a couple features to justify a higher price.

      • Anonymous

Your right it would only be fair if a phone actually stayed on the market for 6 or so years.

So far, the HTC Flyer is the only tab that is coming close to my needs/wants, but it’s not everything yet.

I figure my tab will come out in 2012, and hopefully at a price I want.

This year, I’m buying a new, high end lappy to supplement my G2. Well, not too high end, but a core i3 or i5 definitely.

It’s a bit off-topic, but there are unsubstiantiated rumors theorizing that Amazon will give free Kindles to Prime members by year end. Bezos just smiles when asked about it. That could shake up the whole mobility market. Again, only a rumor.

  • Vibrant Addict

When the hell are Wifi-only versions of these tablets coming? I don’t need 3G as I can already tether from my phone. Give me my wifi version and I’ll be buying at $300-400 tops

  • Rubi76

Not clear if it has a Micro SD or not – that could be deal breaker.
If they put this at 600, and 400 on contract and/or for the wi fi version, it will sell more than the Xoom.
I don’t think they are thinking straight, I hope they will lower the price once the ipad 2 is announced.

I doubt’ it’s 799 unsubsidized this is a third party retailer, think Best Buy, similar to how they sell phones unsubsidized go for around 599 instead of the normal 499 unsubbed.

I’m excited about the G-Slate, but like with smartphones, I’m letting others be the guinea pigs and deal with the bugs and overblown pricing. I can wait a few months, or longer, to get this tablet at a reasonable price without dealing with the bugs and kinks that are bound to happen. Never understood the “I have to have it first” mindset. I’d rather have something of quality at a fair price.

        ditto, exactly!

        • Foxeh

I actually gave the Xoom a good once over before I decided to take it back. It’s nice that it can keep up with me, but much like the iPad I found it uncomfortable to use. Also, despite having all the latest and greatest tech, it can’t even handle most transitions with fluidity. The Unreal Engine game that came with it has bad framerates, HD video isn’t smooth unless it’s encoded in a specific way, performance drops in any orientation besides the default… and this was all consistent with the two Xoom display models I’ve looked at as well. I won’t even mention the amount of crashes I experienced. I could go on, but I’m not in the mood.

I took it back because it simply was not my money’s worth. Sure, Android gets updates and it all may get fixed eventually, but I didn’t want that looming over my head. I was happier without the device so I saw little reason to keep it.

          But that’s just me.

      • jarjon76

That’s all well and good for you. I have the money to buy one but I’m choosing not to buy it at that price. To each his/her own.

poor parents… what woulf they do now? )) but the price is too high i think. really they could have some cheaper models that could be a little simplier. but i believe that it is a cool and great in use device… will try to save some money for it

i’m sure a contract will drastically reduce the price but still to compete with other devices and the new ipad coming they need to really step up.
