HTC Pyramid Found Roaming Chinese Badlands?

There is little question the phone most of you want to know about is the HTC Pyramid, hopefully the first 4.3″ Android phone to hit T-Mobile. As is expected, one of the biggest questions is what exactly will it look like? Thanks to Chinese site XDA.cn we believe we now know. Sporting a 4.3″ screen with a 1.2 GHz processor (no word on dual core) and a 960 x 540 qHD display. The Chinese site also states the Pyramid is running 786 MB of Ram, has an 8 megapixel camera on front with a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera. What’s odd is that it’s listed as running Android 3.0 honeycomb?

I’d take all of this with a grain of salt until we can find out more, especially the bit about running Android 3.0 Honeycomb. However, some of those specs including the processor and qHD screen line up with earlier rumors. Even more we expect that a device this anticipated would sport a dual core processor so we’ll remain hopeful for that as well. In the meantime, feast your eyes on what the HTC Pyramid might look like and try not to drool on the keyboard.

I so hope all of this is true!! These are most of the specs I have been waiting for!!

  • Anonymous

    Yay!!

    I hope it has 3d!!

  • ricr

I loved the specs first time I read them, and had been holding off waiting for images. If that’s what it looks like, then that is definitely my next phone. NO QUESTION!

T-Mobile 2011 is looking good, hoping they stick to the G-Slate release at the end of this month looking forward to picking one of those up as well!

it looks like a typical htc device kinda boring.

Kinda boring or absolutely gorgeous in it’s simplicity? I chose the latter. :)

It’s completely plausible that the device could in fact have honeycomb on there at this stage, there actually is a phone ui in the sdk for honeycomb, so it’s not out of this world to see, but extremely unlikely it ships to market like that though.

I can’t wait for this phone to come out, I’ve been saving my upgrade for a reason, and this phone is that reason.

It won’t be on a phone (officially) until 3.1/Ice Cream.. so I’m sure this will be 2.3.x/Gingerbread at release.

But yea, if this pic is forreal, I had a feeling it was gonna look just about the exact same as the Verizon Thunderbolt LTE, which isn’t a bad thing since HTC makes some good looking phones, compared to others.

      • http://twitter.com/davehasninjas David Wilson

Anything’s quite possible at this stage still, extremely unlikely, but possible, htc is already rumoured to be releasing a honeycomb smartphone similar to the pyramid during the summer for att, so them testing it out on the pyramid now isnt that far fetched.

Again, I doubt it will launch with anything other than gingerbread, but hey, one can hope.

While my guess is that this is just leak confusion, Android is open source and OEMs are free to alter the code (hence Sense, Blur, etc). There’s really no reason why HTC couldn’t say, “I got your tablet-only right here!” and make a honeycomb phone if they wanted.

  • Ilyas_k15

I am really looking forward to this one, I will be able to get an upgrade in September, and I am torn between this one and LG Optimus 2X (G2X). With CTIA around the corner, they might announce more awesome devices, then I am really going to be confused. Kind of hoping to avoid that.

    • Jonathan

I sure hope that T-Mobile has devices to present at CTIA. MWC & CES was a bust. :(

after reading this i’m REALLY hoping T-Mobile gets the LG Optimus 3D or the Galaxy S2…this is a nice phone but it’s hard to get excited about the Evo 1.5…at least tweak the design a little more

    • Jonathan

It doesn’t even look like the HTC Evo 4G (aside from the 4.3″ screen.)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=205100175 Nathan Olonoff

1.2Ghz dual core snapdragon most likely: http://www.phonescoop.com/news/item.php?n=6076

HTC still hasn’t jumped on the tegra2 bandwagon but the 1.2Ghz DC Snapdragon should easily be up to par with the tegra2, maybe not as good but close enough.

honestly, i’m sold just from the picture. i didn’t want a 4.3″ phone but this is really nice. Looks like it could be the nexus 2 as well. (please god let it be so!)

Only downside is that it’ll probably have sense, i prefer stock android. but luckily thats what cyanogen is for.

And as far as honeycomb goes. no way it could run stock 3.0, but it’s possible that they could mean gingerbread 2.4, or possibly ice cream which is the combination of honeycomb and gingerbread.

    • Anonymous

Actually, if HTC uses the dual core MSM8660 snapdragon, it should have twice the GPU capabilities of Tegra 2. The MSM8660 is supposed to be a real beast.

  • J Schu81

I like the look of that…waiting until after Oct to renew contract though. Will be moving and I don’t want to get stuck in a contract with a phone that can’t receive a signal.

It’s the typical HTC hardware layout, but what’s good about this is the spec and what’s even better than hopefully it’s coming to T-Mobile. This is probably the phone that I’m waiting for… Now, once the LG and this HTC comes out… it’s gonna be a hard decision on which one to choose from.

    • Petey

but totally forgot about the sprint & t-mobile rumors… this is what making me not renewing my contract. So Eventho they coming out with good powerful smartphones, but if the rumors between sprint and tmobile is true then i’m moving to another carrier.

      • Mrosswilson

It is completely ignorant to not renew a contract because of rumors like that. Even if the merger is announced TOMORROW it would take nearly 2 years to finalize, and even longer to ultimately impact you as a consumer.

        • Rage

are you kidding me? i like having history with a company. if they wanna change why wait? i would rather get my history started with a new provider.the longer you are with a provider the better they treat you! im going on 12 years, since it was voice stream. i never have to buy a phone.i would be willing to take the chance with a new provider. better sooner than later.

      • Rage

i think you said it word for word what i was about to say! i WILL get this phone when i know t-mobile’s future.

    • Anonymous

I was thinking the same. I’m inclined toward the LG, and if it has STOCK Android, then it’s LG for me.

      • Petey

Yes, if it’s stock Android, then that’s an easy decision for me too!

Any news on any new Windows7 coming to TMobile? HTC is just crap! What about new Samsung or Blackberry devices? Thanks

At least HTC updates the OS in a timely fashion. Samsung took 8 months just to get to 2.2.

Looks nice, and very professional. But then, how different can they look? The front is all screen, little bezel with buttons at the bottom. Looks like they tried something different with the back to distinguish it from other nearly identical designs. Looks strong too, like the Nexus One. Hope it’s dual core. Honeycomb? I doubt it.

  • Socalteknique

      Pyramid
      Galaxy S2
      G2X

      • Jonathan

Speaking of the Galaxy S II, I hope that Samsung releases carrier versions like they did last year. I read on Engadget, BGR or SlashGear the other day that the Galaxy S II has passed the FCC but only with AT&T bands. Hope AT&T isn’t the only recipiant. :(

        • Ktwist

I attended the galaxy 4G training on the 3rd and a top samsung developer mentioned the sg2 and confirmed its coming to tmobile. He said tmobile alone had 1 million vibrant sales and that was the most of any carriers version of the galaxy. He said that puts us in good with samsung and we are for sure getting a variation of the galaxy S2. Hope he is right but i have no reason to doubt him.

Dang this phones looks sexy and sleek:) So i really hope T-Mobile gets this phone because i will cop it for sure! But since i know it wont drop anytime soon ,probably like mid springish then i hope it has gingerbread os and they add a kickstand like the evo and thunderbolt. So come on t-mo lets get it and i will promise you we will win big with this phone and hopefully others :)

Funny. If it were a mytouch, it would ruin it for me.

      • Jonathan

Lord, I hope if the HTC Pyramid DOES come to T-Mo they don’t brand it as a MyTouch. (Though I wouldn’t be surprised if they do.)

        ** Crossing my fingers! **

        • Deff

FOR REAL I’m tired of T-mo sporting the 12-year old girl names. What would you rather, the HTC Pyramid (or double-shot, whatever it will be called) or the Mytouch 4g II (and comes in four fun colors! :D )? pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeee don’t butcher this one T-mo, I would have rathered ( << is that a word?) the mytouch 4g been called the HTC Glacier like its Euro counterpart. . . . I can honestly say unless you are a teenage girl, or a 37 year old virgin, you don't appreciate T-mo making our phones look lamer and lamer as time goes on.

Pyramid > Thunderbolt. Thunderbolt is a modified Desire HD that can do LTE.

I noticed that it only says “Google” on the back, just like the Nexus One. This versus “with Google”. I don’t know if that means anything.

  • Anonymous

I would have to say that the LG G2X, seems a bit more interesting now being there’s no telling if the Pyramid will sport a dual core. The design reminds of the Nexus One a bit, and it’s unique.

    • Anonymous

i gotta say im waiting on galaxy s II. it seems much more refined than the g2x

      • Anonymous

It looks like the Galaxy S II is going to AT&T on 3G. It’s a beast, and TouchWiz seems to be so much cleaner with Gingerbread, along with the just under 4.3 inch screen.

I am a big fan of HTC & Google, they team up to make what I think is the best made and looking devices. I’m hoping this device comes very soon to T-Mobile. HTC has a very good track record and being a owner of the Nexus One and the MyTouch 4G I can say first hand they make great phones. I want this phone, hoping T-Mobile reads these comments, they need super phones to advertise, IMO that is what today’s customers are looking for.

god i hope this is true. it seem like ive been waiting an eternity for tmo to finally get a htc high end bad ass beast with a 4.3 screen and sense. my mytouch 3g is living on borrow time, its time for it to lay to rest.

      Well, it’s about time! :)

Guys, this could be the next Nexus phone with ice cream. Both Nexus phones say “Google” on the back, not “with google” like most other phones.

Google already said honeycomb features will come to phones as “ice cream” so this rumor about honeycomb on a phone is false.

    • whosaidwhat

      Anyone remember HTC Passion? :)

      • SoCalTeknique

Yeah thats the Nexus One, your point?

        • http://twitter.com/Tito_1 Felipe Zamora

That is the point lol. There need not be anymore explanations.

        • whosaidwhat

Well, I’ll try to explain it…LOL

          HTC Passion = Nexus one
HTC Pyramid I believe = Nexus 3 or whatever they call it. The two current Nexus phones have “Google” on the back. Not “With Google” like all others.

The Passion floated around the web for a long time before it was announced as the Nexus one. We all know that google releases a new phone with each big Android update and “Ice cream” is a BIG update for phones so I expect this to be the phone the introduce with it.

The back of that phone also screams Nexus one. All of HTC’s latest 4″+ phones look just like the EVO, this one looks like a bigger Nexus one.

      • http://twitter.com/Tito_1 Felipe Zamora

        Passion = Nexus One.

First of all, the mytouch 4g is one of the most powerful, fastest and well built phones out today( look up its reviews if you don’t believe.) We only carry one windows 7 phone which admittedly isn’t the best. Besides that with the announcement of the sidekick 4g we have for 4g capable phones which no other carrier can say while we also have a dual core phone coming in the LG G2x. So STFU and go screw around on your slower and inferior carrier.

      • alexxxxx

what do u mean by slow inferior carrier?? Lte is not slow at all also dont forget it will get way better signal inside buildings cuz its running at the 700 mhz at least us people on verizon have coverage on more fukin places. as a matter of fact over here in montana there is no t-mobile only at&t ,verizon and sprint work over here. also so what if ur gettin a sidekick 4g that phones is for girls only an its a phone aimed for teens. so what if u are getting dual core phones ? we will too someday and dnt even get me started with u cant do voice and data at the same time on verizon cuz we will be able to do it on 4G so whos the inferior carrier?? now t-mobile so go enjoy ur crappy reception inside buildings

        • Deff

I never understood why people like you who have other carriers even bother visiting this site. Seriously, go to verizonmonews or something… oh wait there isn’t one.. ; )

          Tmo = win

        • Farhan

If you bothered to check the top part of this page you will see several links like PhoneDog, DroidDog, etc. one of which is VzBuzz. Care to guess what VzBuzz stands for? I’m not surprised to see at least Verizon customers here since I also tend to check out VzBuzz from time to time.

        • Carlo66

@ deff wow u sound ignorant u think t-mobile is better only cuz it has its own forums webpage? that still doesnt fix its crappy coverage haha ur lame verizon also has its own page like this its called vzbuzz.com i bet u didnt kno that huh?

      • Neverthesheep

“the mytouch 4g is one of the most powerful, fastest and well built phones out today” yea excuse me but i gotta jump in on that comment. The Mytouch 4g is not that great. Ever tried to video chat on it? ever depended on the wifi/bluetooth to be connected for more than an hour after turned on? ever needed it to not lag? ever needed the batter to last for more than half a day while keeping the 4g on? i signed up for another two year contract phone and about two months later i couldnt take it, that phone sucks and have been waiting for Tmo to get a better phone so i can fork out even more of my money so that a phone can perform the way it should.
As for these Verizon people on here go tell i applaud the great features and coverage your claiming to have and to get soon. i really do. As i would hope a 122.00/month(average smarphone bill for verizon) bill would provide all that. Eventhough they are using an outdated technology(cdma) i mean cdma, really??? hey next time your testing out what awesome features 100+/monthly bill provides you just remember us sim card users can pop or sim into another phone on the fly and enjoy, not spend 15 minutes on the phone or go by a VZW store just to switch out phones. I left Verizon for Tmo because where i am, the coverage is that exact same so y pay more than 40/bucks a month for the same thing? and who gives a F&#@ what kind of service some worthless state named montana is getting?

        • Jrod26

Well I don’t live in montana but I do live in los angeles and let me say I have t-mobile the wife uses verizon and let me just say verizons cdma is better than gsm I don’t care if its an outdated technology its still gets better reception than t-mobile my wife always has better reception inside buildings on her old bb storm 2 than me on my mytouch 4g and I have to borrow her phone to make calls me im the kind of man that cares about receptioni dont care if verizon uses an old technology as long as I have service inside buildings so I think I’m going to be switching soon and get the htc thunderbolt 4g

        • http://twitter.com/SParKlngCyaNide SparklingCyanide

The myTouch 4G IS that Great. Its a Spectacular Phone and still one of the Best most Powerful phones out there not to mention one of the Classiest looking phone as well. Bug off Never, you know not what you speak of.

        • SaggyBalls

Yeah, it’s a great looking phone…if you’re a girl. Don’t you even try to deny it. It has soft, elegant curves, which makes it feminine.

I’m just gonna tell you right now, and this is the honest to god truth, I switched from one Verizon phone to another Verizon phone faster than my brother switched his sim cards. I call *228, press option ’1′ and it takes seven seconds to program the new phone to my line. But the whole concept is a moot point anyway. What real world practicality does it even have?

Additionally, I do pay more for Verizon, I can’t deny that. I pay an extra $12/month now as opposed to when I was on T-Mobile. But I will pay the hell out of that $12 to get the coverage. It’s almost a premium. A premium that I have no problem with because I know when I go on my motorcycle trips through the countryside, I’m covered. And that’s a great feeling.

Lastly, please explain the benefits of having GSM versus CDMA.

Anything is better than the experiences I’ve had with the HD2. Bring it on Tmobile, I’m bleeding to trade this HD2 in for a better device!!! GAAAHHH!!!! Now seriously, GAAAAHHHH!!!!! You thought you were going to get a serious response didn’t you? Well tough cookies!!!

    • Saint Anthony

Flash android on hd2… I get better service and guess what I’ve been getting 4g speeds

      • Wilma Flintstone

I dual boot Android already. It’s nice with Android but I honestly just want a new phone due to all the issues I’ve had with the HD2. And the HD2 has no FFC which I REALLY have been wanting since the N95 days.

  • tmobeast

    i dont see hdmi.
    but thats okay.
and also is thunderbolt dual core??

    • bingbingo

nope single core u dont need dual core to run on 4g

  • Anonymous

If this is indeed a dual core phone, it’s exactly what TMO needs for customer retention otherwise it will fit the long line of “almost it” phones that we are getting used to on TMO. Q2 2011 is too late to be launching single core high end phones, even if they are on the 40nm fabrication process.

On the bottom picture, I think I see a HDMI out on the right side. For those that fancy HDMI out, it’s still possible to use USB to HDMI adapters if HTC wants, jst like Samsung did

This could very well be a pure Google Nexus phone. HTC menu button likes to say menu, Nexus uses the menu icon that’s in the picture and the buttons are in the same Nexus order.

Bottom line, TMO needs this phone, CTIA may give us the good news.

Disagree if that’s the case the thunderbolt needs to go back to the drawing board. Guess we shall see.

      • Anonymous

I can count many phones that need to go back to the drawing board. The Thunderbolt has been delayed twice already and it’s an outdated phone. Pyramid needs to be a dual core phone, Q2 2011 is too late for a single core, especially in the high end class.

        • ATL guy

Those buttons are not in the same order as on the original Nexus.

        • http://twitter.com/LaNcELieD Lance Bell

          Agreed.

Nexus one : Back, Menu, Home, Search

G2 has the same order as the Pyramid, but the menu button isnt an icon it just says “menu”.

          G2: Home, Menu, Back, Search

        • alex

for real its outdated just like the sidekick 4g

        • Anonymous

Well if you consider the thunderbolt outdated I can’t disagree with your statement anymore lol

I posted this on Engadget. Ill post it here too.

This phone (HTC Pyramid), might be a code name for the next developer phone (Nexus phone) Nexus 2/3.

    - It says “google” on the back instead of “with google” Also usually Sense phones have the “HTC logo/letters on the backside.
    - It has the menu icon like the nexus , it doesnt say “menu” like sense phones.
    - Google usually releases a new nexus phone with a major android software release. 2.4 (ice cream sandwich) is rumored to come out in the summer. It will bring honeycomb features to phones.
    - Tmobile usually gets nexus phones first.
    - Tmobile doesnt have any Sense UI phones just an altered mytouch like sense. IT doesnt look like a mytouch (shiny plastic looking body). It looks like a bigger nexus one without the trackball. This can only be a G series or nexus phone on tmobile, witch means only one thing … vanilla android.
    - Variants of the nexus one went to other carriers. Ex. HTC incredible, HTC desire, HTC evo (bigger screen but almost same internals. Pyramid/nexus2/3 could go to sprint as the evo2 but with sense, and HTC desire HD2 to europe.

All this is just a hunch by me BUT alot of it adds up quite nice

The Incredible S also has the same menu button and it has Sense. Hate to burst your bubble, but I’m just pointing out a fact. And the curious “opening” should be a speaker like it is on the SGS.

That may true for the menu button and the “opening” (it was just a hunch) but everything else, Especially the “google” not “with google” points to my theory.
I could be wrong of coarse, but I hope im right. My nexus one needs an upgrade.
The pyramid, galaxy 2, or gx2 are my only phones i would consider giving up my nexus1 for.

        • Virtue

I don’t want you to get your hopes up so for just this last time, I’m going to disprove your point of the “Google” and With “Google” thing. The LG Optimus 2X was first seen in prototype form with a “Google” and not a “With Google.” Now, it is just “With Google.” And let me point out that it was not a stock device. Maybe this render is the same thing?

        • frigadroid

Its all speculation this phone could be for tmobile europe? It could be vanilla it could be cranberry, well probably not. I’m just interested in cold hard facts and really we don’t have much to get to excited about yet. I’m interested but until something official comes out I’m not getting my hopes up.

        • alex

also guys remember this is china t-mobile could decide to change the software, mytouch line, g2 line (not complete stock), but it looks like stock although it would be cool with neww sense, stock android is boring

        • http://twitter.com/Tito_1 Felipe Zamora

There is no “China T-Mobile”, this is a device leak that took place in China, it has nothing to do with the carriers. This hunch of it being a Next Gen Nexus maybe correct, and as you all know Google I/O hasn’t started yet. There is still hope. Stock android is nice because you can choose what skin you want over it.

um, i think that he meant to put a full stop into between china and t-mobile. :p

        • dooj

          full stop… aka ‘a period.’

    Pyramid aka double shot???

  • joser

This looks like it should be part of the nexus line. Same color and simplicity of the nexus one. Hopefully soon!

  • ATL guy

    Looks very very nice!

I always wondered if there would ever be a 4.3″ vanilla android device that would be sweet.
