Blackberry OS 6 Available For 9700 Customers?

Yesterday, I posted a quick comment on Twitter regarding a number of emails I received regarding Blackberry 9700 users notifications they received from Desktop Manager that version 6.0.0.448 was available. I took it with a little bit of skepticism, however, given the sheer number of responses we received yesterday both through email and Twitter, we’re ready to call this real, albeit without official word from T-Mobile. You’ll have to plug your 9700 into Desktop Manager and check for an update as T-Mobile.com/bbupgrade doesn’t seem to offer the new software. Let us know how it works for you!

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

I guess I’m confused. Does having it mean you have the leaked versions or did TMobile finally push this for real? Color me one confused Android user :P

    What’s the advantage of BB6?

  • Teko03

    Updating mine now, oh yea.

    • Moe

So tell me how you are up-dating ur 9700. I have tried everything. I get the blackberry desktop, but not the 6.0, also updates nothing.

      can you help

  • Teko03

@mlewis, this is an official update pushed out from RIM at least, connect your BB via USB, launch BlackBerry Desktop Manager and you’ll be prompted to update to v6.

  • albert

    I installed earlier, working great.

  • Itchg

I just installed it on my wofe’s and it’s working great!!!

  • Jm

I just updated from OS5 to OS6. It came through BB Desktop and took about one hour to complete the update. It is done.

  • Jixxxxer

RIM had this version posted up in blackberry beta zone for some time now…There are some pros and cons with this release… pros: universal search, webkit browser, update ui, and a few others… cons: slight memory leak, missing cursor in bbm..

if you install the leak or the beta os from beta zone, you can apply a hybrid to it, which fixes the memory leak somewhat… you may also install the beta bbm 5 or leaked bbm 6 to fix the missing cursor issue….

some people complain about the scroll down menu, which doesn’t bother me at all…

    • Jixxxxer

if anyone needs help installing a hybrid on their BB or any other blackberry help in general you can hit me up with an e-mail at Jixxxxer@gmail.com

Annnnd, I have OS6. Although it’s really nice, you can really tell it was made for a phone with a bigger screen. the home screen seems a bit…crowded

  • jakedillz

I checked tmobiles website as well as the desktop manager nothing of 6.0 please advise because i am calling bs

BB Desktop for Mac offered to update my TMO 9700. It took about 20 min. New camera app, media player, maps and nice, plus a few other things seem to take fewer steps to do now. One bug – the blackberry App world icon is missing, although the list of apps show it’s installed.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WO4F4JZ4GRAXM5H34G6GNVXNKQ -=Pat Maweenie=-

you may have to re-install it. I’m doing that right now, from
      http://us.blackberry.com/apps-software/appworld/download.jsp

      • anon

Pat is right. Expect to uninstall and reinstall most, if not all, of your apps. Some of them create a memory leak until they’re reinstalled for some reason.

    • Nanddm98

I had the same issue and had to reinstall it.

  • anon

Just updated a 9700 and a 9300. Then I tried to update another 9300, and the update appears to have disappeared. Darn.

  • TheBuckII

This is true plugged my 9700 in and got the msg but when I attempted to upload it gives me an error msg of failed try again but I will try on my home PC I’m at work

  • Kornmatrix44

  • Cyntanykia

funny thing i was able to upgrade my phone yesterday afternoon bb bold 9700 came home and tried to upgrade my husband and it says not updates available??? what’s that about?

    • Dave

I got the same thing – my 9700 is about 4 months newer than my wife’s – I tried to upgrade hers and still, only the latest version of 5 is available. Weird.

    • Erik

I also got the option to upgrade and then later when I connected again, there was no update. Maybe it’s been pulled? Is anyone else seeing this update in BB Manager?

  • Deven0809

    Not available yet!!!!!!!!!

  • Dave

I went to Blackberry.com, and looked for upgrades to my white 9700. I downloaded and installed the plugin (I don’t have BB Desktop loaded) and it found OS 6 was available. I downloaded and installed, and it works very well so far!

  • Antinphilly

Still not showing as an update with my 9700 connected to desktop manager

  • trife

Just installed .461 on my wife’s white 9700. Looks great!

For some reason it wouldn’t install using DM, so I had to just run the Apploader as an Administrator…..worked like a charm.

    • beastly

.461? If you’re going to install an OS from a different carrier, you’ll need to delete the vendor.xml file before it will allow installation.

      • trife

Indeed. Exactly what I did prior to trying with DM. Sometimes it’s funny like that.

Back when all I used were BB’s, I remember running across the same issue when using DM. So the other option is right clicking the Apploader file and running as an admin. Hasn’t failed me yet.

  • 1 step ahead

just go to crackberry.com and download the official version from an european carrier, it’s what i did almost a month ago and everything works fine

  • Ruskastud

Upgraded last night…….. Tried to thin out my installed programs to save on memory, but it is still really bad. Battery life seems horrible too. Already at 50% after a full charge last night. Will probable downgrade back to 714…..

    • beastly

You’ll have to uninstall all your downloaded apps and reinstall them. That will fix the memory and battery leaks.

  • Mshaw9

Just tried to get copy through BB Desktop and OS6 did show up ?

  • Qasim_r

Tried searching for updates directly through blackbery.com> apps and software> check for updates… still no OS6!! :( Im a sad panda.. Can anyone that already has the OS6 for BB9700 upload a link to download the actual software for me? I’ll love you forever if you do … :D

    • Nest11

download the desktop manager into your computer, from there get the update, it works!!

  • Satcom99

And? Thanks but no thanks for the more complicated interface I’ll keep my current version. How about a larger screen and 4g with Android Apps and we’ll have something that is buzz worthy. About ready to retire this pandora machine and just use as flashlight and flash for my Vibrant. I want larger keys too with same design as 9700/8780 unlike querky 8820′s though.

Yesterday, I successfully updated my 9700 to the Blackberry OS.6. So far, So good…

  • Nanddm98

Was updating my calendar through desktop manager on Friday and it notified me that there was an upgrade. It has worked flawlessly. Love the new features.

  • Chlnmtchll

I think someone posted it by accident because i still cant get it

    • Jm

      Dear Chin,

This was VERY real. I did it on my 9700.

I suspect BB pilled it for some reason. Perhaps they never intended to post it in the first place. It installed perfectly and works well. I did not have to do any work arounds (Delete vendor file). It loaded on my T-Mobile BB 9700 like it was made to.

I am happy it works. And I am sorry you did not get it in time. Cheer up, this tells me that T-Mobile will be adding an OS6 upgrade for the BB 9700 in the future. Otherwise, why else would 6.0.0.448 exist.

      • IFLY

I downloaded and installed the OS using App Loader. So far, all functions are normal including UMA. Can’t believe how much faster the browser is with this new OS.

  • Really, no 4G

Nope, despite this device being advertised as 6 ready, no update available.

  • Lewisjordan24

    nope, no update

  • Gerbil

Installed it on mine and my wife’s 9700′s on Thursday. Been using it since.

    Confirmed.

    • Mike

how did u get the update and with what carrier?

      • Gerbil

T-Mobile. Both of us got the update notice when opening up Blackberry Desktop before plugging in the device. Not sure if this is a valid data point, but we bought the 9700′s literally the day they became available. Phased rollout?

Updated my wife’s 9700 on friday thru bb manager after reading your post

  • Lauren

Anyone have any idea when they will put it back up? I’ve tried twice now to upgrade to OS 6 via Desktop Manager and haven’t even been given an option to download OS 6. Guess I’m still stuck with OS 5. :(

  • Tmonews

I was given the option to install 6.0.0

I took the bait and it was full of annoying bugs. I downgraded, and then a day later I saw reports of people being offered 6.0.448, so naturally I thought maybe there was an upgrade to fix the bugs I encountered. Plugged bold into DM: no freakin update is offered for me anymore!

    • Mike

which carrier? att or t-mobile? because i have yet to get an option to update

    • beastly

6.0.0 is the same as 6.0.0.448. It’s listed in the app loader menu as 6.0.0, but the actual handheld OS version that was being pushed through a few days ago was 6.0.0.448.

  • Ralph

Does Tmobile UMA work with the 6.0.0.448 update?

    • Rc18cass

Yep, been using it for about a month UMA works as well as 5.0.714 .It’s sweet takes a bit of time to get used to it but a whole lot better,I’m dead without UMA.trust me it’s good

I am on the Desktop Manager now and just clicked “Update My Device” and it says there is no new software for it. That’s pretty weird.

    • Lauren

Ya…it appears they pulled it sometime on Saturday. I’ve been trying to update since Sunday with no luck.

      • Anonymous

Tellus just announced the OS 6 for the Blackberry 9700. T-Mobile is always the last to get in the game. Grrrrrrrrrrr.

  • Lauren

Does anyone have an OTA for the official upgrade to OS 6?

  • Monkeymod4

    • Jm

You need to revalidate the email.

Go to the email setup screen and follow it to the end. Then when it asks for validation, revalidate. If you did it correctly, all emails will flow in.

      Good luck to you.

  • Guest

I was able to update my 9700 to version 6.0.0.448 (through http://us.blackberry.com/update/), by connecting my phone then clicking on the “Check for Updates” link. Unfortunately, it looks like RIM pulled it.

  • Marco Polo

To this day nothing yet. RIM is getting as yesterday as all the news and their phones.
