February 23rd Bringing About Several Device Price Changes

Plenty has been made in the past few days over T-Mobile originally posting a $149.99 post rebate price for the Samsung Galaxy S 4G and then updating later with a $199.99 post rebate price. Well, as it turns out, the Galaxy S 4G won’t be alone in seeing a price increase as the myTouch4G and T-Mobile G2 will also see similar increases. Perhaps T-Mobile is taking a lesson out of the Verizon pricing playbook for the HTC Thunderbolt and realizing they can charge just a little bit more for these 4G devices.

The myTouch4G will be increasing to $249.99 along with the T-Mobile G2 which will also see a price increase to $249.99. The myTouch Slide will start off at $149.99 with a $50 rebate dropping the final price to $99.99. The Samsung Smiley, Gravity 3 and Gravity T are also seeing price changes but nothing along the lines of what the 4G devices are seeing.

Price Increase? and not a price drop? What does t-mobile think of themselves? Not sure why they are going out of their way to move their existing customers to other carriers…shitty AT&T here i come…

    • TMO Associate

These are not price increases. The premium phones were always $250 with $50 back, There was a half off promotion (from HTC) that dropped them to $100 after rebate… promotion is over.. back to everyday pricing which is on par with the other companies. Every company has a data cap. The average customer only uses 1gig on their phone… not the 5 T-mo allows you to use. No need for misinformed, unjustified complaining.

      • Anonymous

The G2 and MT4G are $250… with nothing back. U see that there?

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DNR3MMYBLZEKZ6TB6TBPVECNZU JamesM

        PREMIUM??? LOL

      • Anonymous

The average user does not use only 1gb a month maybe that was true before android but with so much more features much more data gets used.

first they cap us now they raise the price on the phones

    • TheBOSS

like you were going to buy one anyway..your probably waiting on 4.8″ quad core phone that turns into a jet.

      • Farhan

I’m waiting on a quad core phone that turns into Carly.

        • jarjon76

I’m with you. Forget the phone, I’ll take Carly.

  • Farhan

Bad marketing move by TMo. Instead of increasing prices on older 4g phones why not step up release of new 4g phones and sell them at a premium. It would look better if they are charging a premium for 4g dual-core phones as opposed to phones from 3 months ago.

Are they actually thinking that the price increase will result in the phones flying off the shelves? I think not.

    • Anonymous

Whats makes it worse is the BRAND NEW Dual Core “4G” Atrix is $199 and the Thunderbolt is $99.

      • The Truth

Lmao at the price going up! I admit, when I saw the headline I thought, “Ahh, the mytouch 4g and g2 are finally going down in price”. But to my surprise the price is going up on these old phones (In the tech world) with a 2-year contract. If these new phones that are coming out on ATT (Atrix) and Verizon (Thunderbolt) are cheaper pimpstrong, they are making it tempting to look elsewhere. No?

        • Anonymous

Thats the truth right there. I think I love ATT and VZW’s phones as much as I love TMO’s service and pricing. Since that’s the case, I will be keepin my @$$ put in hopes that TMO eventually gets what I’m looking for.

Imagine goin to get an Atrix with no laptop doc or a single core Thunderbolt only for TMO to whip out the Pyramid or SGS2 both with Dual Core and 21Mb/s and Ice Cream this summer… Ooooooooh that would suck big time.

        • Aerofanbig

sucks double when you see your monthly bill from AT&T or VW lol

the Thunderbolt is $250 (at BestBuy which is generally the same or $50 less than carrier prices). http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/12/htc-thunderbolt-exclusively-hits-best-buy-for-250-at-launch-ro/

Yeah i F’kd that up. I meant the Inspire.

OUCH! $249 for a G2 or MT4G!? Thats a huge step in the wrong direction considering the brand spanking new Galaxy S 4G and its superior radio is “only” $199… SMH

FYI it is in fact set in motion on the Tmobile.com site.

    • http://twitter.com/MannyC_ Emanuel Cedeno

maybe they want to move more GS2 units by raising the price of the G2 and MT4g

        • Anonymous

Could be, could be the cup of coffee that caused you to… jk Yeah it could be that they are low on stock of the MT4G and the G2 and want to slow down those sales and push out that shiny new Galaxy S. I doubt they are nearing EOL and the prices could just drop right back down as easily as Humm cuts a fart.

        • guest

Humm is an idiot. No doubt.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DNR3MMYBLZEKZ6TB6TBPVECNZU JamesM

LOL, They are charging too much for 2nd tier phones!! Might be TMO’s top tier…but they are not top tier compared to other carriers.

    • Aerofanbig

What top tier? The EVO? Which is old now (and is just an HD2 with android and 4g chip) The EVO Shift..which has a smaller screen? The Atrix which just came out and is bootlogged and carries Motoblur which will take months *if ever* to be able to fully unlock and use custom ROMS? The iPhone 4 which is a 3G phone? The Droid X which is the same problem as the Atrix and is now “old” technology? So…where are these “top tier” phones Tmo doesn’t carry? Oh maybe you mean all the Galaxy S phones…oh wait, those are all 3G too, only Tmo has the 4G version (and had its 2.2 update over a month quicker then any other carrier btw) Go check CNET for unbiased reviews, MT4G is still rated as one of the top phones on the market. Not shabby for a “2nd tier” phone

      • Anonymous

Nothing on the Evo is top tier people get fooled by the big screen. Its so dumb.

  • ms3

$249 !!…wtf…. good thing my contract is over!

  • http://twitter.com/mrjlwilliams J. Williams

They are not charging too much, they have to make money somewhere. They have the best price plans for a major carrier, and we can’t get everything for cheap. They are paying a lot for these phones, and also they just gave away lots of them free on the last promotion. So oh well. If you can’t get it, move on to something you think is more affordable.

  • http://twitter.com/totallyjaded Kevin Nicholls

Apparently, T-Mobile has discovered that giving away phones isn’t the best way to make money.

  • Petey

A great way to lose more customer and not bring in new customers.

  • Alexanderwardlaw21

Just last week I could have upgraded one of my lines to a my touch 4g for $99… now the same phone is $249!!! WTF… the samsung is 149… but who wants a samsung with all their update problems… I will now wait till the first qtr is over and all the new 4g phones come out…

So you must have gotten that recently because Nexus One was hella hard to find below 400

  • NardVa

It’s look’s like T Mobile is trying to push the Galaxy S 4G by making the older phones more expensive. I think it’s stupid. What if you don’t want the Galaxy S4G at 200.00? Who wants to spend 50.00 more for an older phone? They should have kept the older phones at a cheaper price to give customers an option.

This is just a ploy to sell Galaxy 4G: now by comparison with the other phones on T-Mobile it’s not such a bad deal. However now the offerings by T-Mobile do not make sense to the new customers, but they can still milk people who want to upgrade.

    • Anonymous

Good question cuz the no contract price online is $499

  • lattelady

TMO you must be joking, I didn’t take advantage of the free phone promo because the current phones were lame. I figured they were giving them away free since no one will want them when the dual core & quad core phones launch. Now, they want to charge more for these, PLEASE. Failure TMO!!!

  • Quailallstar

Telekom Mobile you are on crack! :)

  • Deceptivesmiles

I think this is just a ploy or a way to cover themselves w/ these new plan prices that are supposed to be releasing soon. I’m just glad I got me and my wife’s G2′s when they were free for that short stint. Thank the Lord for that and for Tmonews for givin me the heads up on that deal

  • pantlesspenguin

I’m typically a TMO supporter, but this really makes NO SENSE. It would make more sense (but not necessarily be wise) if they wanted to charge a little more for NEWLY RELEASED phones starting now. But to raise the price on phones that have been out for several months?? I can’t even attempt an explanation as to why TMO thinks this is a good idea.

    • http://cosmicbreeze.tumblr.com/ DtheArtist

I’m right with ya buddy. Clearly someone high up on T-Mobile still has a new years buzz. Too much eggnog. What a hangover..

All I care about is the retail prices. Which leads me to wonder why the Vibrant’s retail price is still stuck at $500, when the Galaxy S 4G is $450. I’d love to see some of these older devices come down into a reasonable retail price.

    • ivan

because of taxes. ? vibrant is cheaper with contract but because retail price is higher, there are higher taxes. and vice versa. galaxy 4g is more expensive but taxes are less

  • Joeshmoe21

Another proof that T-Mobile is just pushing Galaxy S 4G: So-called HTC promo 50%-off that was supposed to end today somehow magically did not affect HD7 – a Windows Phone device.
Do not “upgrade” to Galaxy 4G and we will see another “promotion” in a month or so.

    • Oreo

Funny seeing at my store location we sold all of our Galaxy S 4G.

  • Itmustbejj

If you pay the list price for one of their phones you are getting taken. Plain and simple. I got 2 new MT4Gs for 30 bucks a piece w/ new contracts the week they came out from a store just by negotiating (thank you wirefly + BoA rebate). Also if your contract is up please tell me why you would pay this price instead of speaking to retentions (“Well my contract is up and I really wish you had XYZ phone like ZYX carrier, plus you just raised the prices on all your phones….”)

    • Jay

Very true i got the original MT3G in 2009 for free with a 2 year contract. You have to find those “Authorized T-Mobile vendors” who can negotiate the price. Also Amazon usually has deals on phones. Never just walk in to a T-Mobile store and pay full price!

      • Itmustbejj

Mine was from a straight up T-Mo store, not an authorized reseller. He just wanted the new contracts and I told him unless he could match the deal I got online wirefly was getting them.

    • Common Sense

Because when you’re off contract, you pay LESS PER MONTH than if you’re on contract. About $20 less. I keep my devices for about a year & then sell them for about $300 to get the next apple of my eye which is about $500. Plus during that year, I spent about $240 less on my rate plan during that year than I would have on contract. Granted…I haven’t checked recent T-Mo price plans, this is just what I get on the Even More + plan. But, I’m just saying THIS is why I pay the list price on phones. I’m not being “taken” at all.

      • Jabombardier

+1. I always pay full price for it knowing that I use the crap out of a phone before I upgrade. So spending 430 on my mytouch slide has proven worthy.

      • Itmustbejj

Even if you are buying off contract, you can get cheaper than the full list price. This is not a contract vs. no contract debate. But to speak to the debate I am pro-contract because you have more room to negotiate. After I negotiated $20 data rates (for a new customer) and got my 12% discount (frickin Triple A members can get like a 14% discount, and discounts can NOT be attached to contractless lines) I end up paying less on contract than you do off contract AND I got my phone for a few hundred less than you (more than offsets a $200 early termination fee).

        • Jaja

          @Itmustbejj

are you drunk? your missing the whole point

        • Jaja

negotiated data rates??????????? no such thing

      • Jaja

        @ common sense.

hey its apparent you have common sense, as this idiots keep talking about how to get a phone for free. mean while they dont realize in the long run on contract you will be paying $20 a more per month as long as your with T-mobile.

  • Ny

The my touch and g2 were originally 250. When that htc promo came out, they temporarily lowered the contact price down to 200 and increased the rebate amount from 50 to 100.

I’d pay those prices for a 4g phone that gave me 3g 90+% of the time. Of course, that means I have to go to Verizon. T-mobile would only charge me that much for a 4g phone giving me 3g 60% of the time and Edge 30% of the time. Yeah, I’d get some 4g, but likely only 9% of the time.

T-mobile’s getting weird, they keep changing their prices and rates every day.

Lately it’s been taking around 45 minutes to an hour for customer service to answer and when they answered I didn’t like the offering.

Personally I don’t care if 3G or 4G or whatever, but in my apartment (and some other places) it changes back and forth from edge to 3G and when it does that it causes the phone pause. The signal outside is good but it can’t seem it get through the roof.
