T-Mobile Wants The iPhone, Too

Now that AT&T’s exclusivity on the iPhone has finally ended with Verizon Wireless officially announcing the iPhone yesterday, it seems T-Mobile wants in on the iPhone as well. As you may recall, T-Mobile USA’s new CEO and President already has a relationship with Apple. Before becoming CEO of T-Mobile USA, Philipp Humm previously was CEO of T-Mobile Deutschland, where he introduced the iPhone to Germany in 2007. According to The Seattle Times, a T-Mobile spokeswoman stated, “We [T-Mobile] would be interested in offering the iPhone, but ultimately it is Apple’s decision.”

While this doesn’t even remotely confirm a T-Mobile iPhone is indeed coming, it does however confirm that Magenta is definitely trying to strike a deal with Apple. And with T-Mobile recently sending out invites to an upcoming Press Event, it definitely does raise some eyebrows. I guess that’s just wishful thinking on our part.

What say you?

kinda weird cause T-Mobile has been bashing the iPhone on AT&T and Verizon.

    • They never attack the iPhone, but the network the iPhone runs on – AT&T and now Verizon.

And if you remember, Verizon did the exact same thing over a year ago – Island of Misfit Toys, anyone. And they still wound up with iPhone, so why not Tmo.

      • But, wouldn’t it still be bashing because the iphone’s ability to do Facetime is only through WiFi? or did AT&T only do that because their network isn’t as strong or expansive?

Most likely AT&T’s decision, especially after the whole disaster that is iPhone users creating a huge burden on their network. I’m almost certain that Facetime over 3G would pretty much put they final bullet in the Deathstar.

Yeah, it’s always the AT&T guys fault that the iPhone is down. It’s almost like a “Dear Apple, come to T-Mobile and your life will be so much better.”

The Facetime via wifi they blame on AT&T, they mock AT&T’s network and with the first commercial, show that the iPhone is being dragged down by the dead weight they consider AT&T’s network to be.

    • The most recent commercial only bashes the network, suggesting that T-mobile is the only network worthy of supporting the iPhone. meh

  • I’ll only give a damn if Tmo can secure the iPhone 4 with HSPA+42 (4G) support at launch.

If they get the iPhone, I’m all over it. I love TMo and want to stay with them, but I’d be settling for some Android phone when what I really wanted all along was the iPhone. PLEASE get a deal done.

    • Bobert

I have to give props to Apple for sticking with 1 device and making that 1 device a beautiful device! I went from the Nexus 1 which was a gorgeous phone to the MT4G which is still very nice.
I just cant believe that Google went from the Nexus to Nexus S!
What a junky phone that is and its sad that while Apple will put its name on a gorgeous device Google will put its name on a piece of junk.
From that perspective it just seems like Google doesn’t care.
If Apple were to expand and offer 2 or 3 other Iphone devices with different distinct looks I think it would be over for Android.

Tons of people already use an iPhone on T-Mobile so I’d say it’s in their (Apple’s) best interest to let T-Mobile offer it legitly than to have people swapping Sim Cards simply because AT&T sucks.

If it bring t-mobile good business plus lots of $$, then for Magenta’s sake I’d keep my fingers crossed for them if thats that they want. But personally, either way, I’d care less. Not into iPhone. I like variety, and WP7 and Android does that just fine..

I feel as though with the new customers, this would be another huge dent into AT&T. A lot of customers are so unhappy with their service that they’ll leave behind they’re beloved iPhone for an Android phone. Now with the iPhone being available on Verizon’s network, T-Mobile needs to act quickly to get people now while their contracts with AT&T are expiring before they switch over to Verizon.

If they can strike a deal to get the iPhone 5 and support it with all the T-Mobile goodies (namely, HSPA++) then this would be GREAT for T-Mobile as it’ll help to steal even more customers from AT&T. Plus, they can advertise it during their primetime advertising months, the NBA Playoffs.

I see lots of ppl here saying they’d jump to the iPhone if it came to Tmo. But there is something that I don’t see anyone talking about and that is the fact that to use an iPhone, you have to use iTunes. And iTunes is not a good piece of software. If you want an iPhone, more power to ya, but you’re gonna find out what I already know…

It really would make sense for T-mobile US to get the iphone, especially now.

Honestly, the mass market only sees what they want to see… and all they’re going to see is, 2 carriers have the iphone and 2 do not… which do you think they’ll go to?

Just from a profit point also, apple would only benefit from going to all carriers. Much less the carriers that offer it…

Tmobile US will benefit very much from offering all major mobile brands… Go Tmo!

Not making fun of the I-Phone, it’s the carriers they are calling out. You better rewatch it, obviously you are an I-Phone fan. Im still rockin my Nexus One from T-Moble getting over 5.5mb on the DL and a very stable 1.4 on the UL. Not too shabby for a lousy carrier????? My new MyTouch 4G is even faster, (these # are at peek hours)

  • You’re not reading between the lines. Yes, they are saying the ball is in apple’s court. What they’re not saying though is that unless Apple can deliver an iphone with a radio that will send and receive at “4G” speeds on T-Mobile’s network, the iphone will NOT come to magenta.

my guess is if it does ever come, it will be several months down the road, and it will be either an IP4G or an Iphone 5 with 4g capabilities.

  • Vendor relations

Sorry to burst everyone’s bubble, but I work for T-Mobile, and while I am stricken from discussing upcoming projects for obvious reasons….commenting on a possible iPhone offering is perfectly acceptable because its not planned for 2011 (or beyond that right now). I work in the vendor relations department and I negotiate hardware from various vendors like Blackberry, Motorola, HTC etc. There are no discussions currently taking place to move to center with the iPhone on T-Mobile.

    • Reveillazn

Even if you do work for T-Mobile, I don’t think you would be in on negotiations or privy to any info until the contracts are signed. I would think only high level employees (prolly just Phillip Humm and the rest of the board) would know anything.

And speaking of working for vendor relations, whats up with the Samsung Vibrant plus BS. Why didn’t you just get that in the first place?

    • Uh huh. I don’t believe anyone at your level, or pretty much anyone outside the legal department and those who have EVP, CEO, CMO, COO, CTO, CFO etc in their job description are privy to the these conversations. Apple doesn’t negotiate with the vendor relations guy, due respect.

      • phonegeek

Ouch david I felt that one! Lmao but I feel what your saying. I don’t believe they would chime the vendor guy (or gal) in. Its solely the boards decision, I really feel we’ll get it by december or some quarter of 2012. Definitely before 2013 or 14.

Apple should be pitching the iphone to all major US carriers at this point….Look at what Samsung did with the Galaxy S line…..Why restrict yourself to 2 carriers? The demand is still there……Android’s universal availability among all carriers and across numerous manufacturers should make Apple want the IPhone in as many hands as possible……Apple will drown in a sea of little green robots if they don’t realize whats happening around them.

I can see Apple doing this, since they know people buy the iphone and use it on t-mobile network :
add all 4g bands to the iphone 5, a la Nokia, and sell it unlocked like they do now , tmobile users buy it
without officially supporting Tmobile. All sales go straight to Apple.

i am a huge tmobile fan since voicestream but i think verizon getting the iphone is going to seriously hurt all other carriers. think about it 30 million att iphone customers leave to verizon then pretty soon everyone you know has verizon then everyone leaves tmobile to have the newest iphone. watch its gonna happen

    • Blue

dude 30 million people are not going to be switching, much less if they are on contract. I really don’t think many people will make the switch it’s just not practical. Maybe 10% of iphone users make the switch from att. Where we will really see a hit is from blackberry and android users on Verizon.

  • i love android but i think i would cave and get an iphone. since apple would need to make a new iphone with AWS could you imagine if it was HSPA+ and we had the first and only 4G iphone?!

    • Be patient guys the iPhone will most likely hit your way guys. I am an Apple Fanboy please don’t hate on me.. I like Android it is a great OS but it just isn’t for me. (I love webOS but Palm dropped the ball a lot). Anyway Canada has AWS carriers as well & it appears that there is buzz that they will be getting the iPhone soon. Now a beta has been released for iOS 4.3 which has iOS devices code name iPhone 3,1 (GSM unit) 3,2 (Verizon/CDMA unit) but since iOS 4.0.1 there was a 3rd device listed iPhone 3,3 which hasn’t been revealed so that could be the Tmo phone. I expect the iPhone 5 to have HSPA+ for AT&T (doubt it will be LTE) So perhaps the next iPhone will be able to support both AT&T/Tmo HSPA+

    • Fsustrength

Heck yea man! Wait for that iPhone 5! I love Android too, but honestly I would take an iPhone over it anyday. The one thing I would miss from Android are the widgets. I know they slow down the phone, but I’m surprised Apple hasn’t worked these into their devices yet, especially since they use them on the Mac. Bring it on!!

Here’s the deal, Apple is all about exclusivity. They take good care to make sure their name remains that of prestige, and with that prestige comes a level of control. When it comes to their products, they like to have all the control (Look at Adobe and Apple exchanges). By allowing the iPhone to be sold on all carriers nationwide, they reduce that mystical exclusivity, resulting in the other carriers becoming emboldened believing that they are entitled to their share of the decision making… and Apple loses its choke hold on how they develop their products, ideas, what-have-you. Just look at how verizon was talking near the end of last year about the prospects of a VZW iPhone… “We have to earn it”?! Seriously, Apple has got these two companies by the balls.

    • Anonymous

Except, Apple didn’t sign an exclusivity contract with Verizon, which means that it will probably end up on all carriers by years end.

I would LOVE a wifi calling iphone, I live in the country and my coverage sucks. I currently use an unlocked iphone and it only gets 2G when I go into my nearby 3G city

  • fam

Officially if apple wanted to keep the lead on the smartphone competition it would bring its phone to all carriers. I would be one of those people to get the iphone just for the simple fact that these other telephone companies keep taking out phones by the day and forget all about the old devices and don’t ever do the updates on them anymore. It’s really annoying when you buy a phone and you think nothing can get better than that and then a few months later they take out one better. Either make a beast of a phone for at least a year like the iphone or keep making updates on all the phones you sell… So I say bring the iphone.

    • Anonymous

Or you can do your own updates which is the power of freedom.

what event did t-mobile send out invites for? when is it?

  • Snoopy07

Now we are talking, if anyone can get the iphone deal for t-mobile its Philipp Humm. Love the new commercial striking Verizon and att. Can’t wait for the day of the commercial where the iphone crosses to t-mobile with Carly. If there is going to be an upcoming Press Event lets be on the lookout, like Verizon’s Lowell McAdam said when the Press talks a lot about something it comes true, so let the t-mobile iphone rumors begin.

Google will not eclipse Apple in 5 years. In fact, if you look at market trends, Apple is enduring massive but steady growth, and is the second highest capitalized company in the United States, and doesn’t show signs of slowing down anytime soon. Their products are considerably more reasonably priced than in the past, and every product launch they have had in the recent past has been epic. You bought Atari instead of Apple in ’81? What iPhone bashing? T-Mobile’s new line of commercials are bashing the ATT network. NOT the iPhone.

        • Phawkes

I gotta disagree, it looks like T-Mobile is network bashing only. If they wanted to bash the iPhone it wouldn’t need to mention AT&T or Verizon at all. Although I do get what you mean when you say iPhone gets hit in the process. But I think that anyone with half a brain can determine that they are really targeting the networks.

        • Petey

Agree, Tmobile is bashing on the network due to slow 3G, and feels sorry for the iphone to be stuck with them. If he comes over to Tmobile, he would do better just like the MT4G. that’s how I see it.

Again, Tmobile is bashing on AT&T & Verizon, not on the iphone.

        • Anonymous

          Fair enough to me.

    • Snoopy07

The commercials clearly say that the iphone is a great device but on a poor network. Its inviting the iphone to come and enjoy the speeds of t-mobile

      • Anonymous

The MT4G is inviting YOU to buy a MT4G because TMO has a better network. The MT4G notices that the iP4 is stuck with a slow carrier but never says you should come play with me. And I see no where that the MT4G clearly says that the iP4 is a good or bad device.

The commercials are promoting the MT4G and our fast network and making you feel like if you buy an iP4 vs. a MT4G then you will not get optimal performance. In the end thats all the average consumer see’s.

If we carried the iP4 then this would be strictly carrier bashing but we don’t so the iP4 is catching shrapnel.

        • Mark

The Carly character is flirting like hell with the iPhone guy… that pained “Does it hurt?” expression, etc. This whole series of ads is building up to the two of them strolling off into the sunset, leaving the rest of us Carly-watchers to go watch Summer Glau on “The Cape.”

        • Anonymous

How is The Cape any way? I agree they make a good couple but what does it all mean if we never even get the iPhone 4? It means the MT4G is a better choice than the iPhone BECAUSE it runs on a better network. But im the only one who see’s it from this angle so its all good. Call me wrong. In the end the commercials make the MT4G a better buy than an iP4. Not equal and not less.

      • Anonymous

Really? If you want a super android phone with a good keyboard, G2, no doubt. Smaller screen but still ‘enough room for activities’ ( Stepbrothers ) ‘Sense is cool, it has some nice widgets, but similar widgets can be found in the market for a reasonable price or even free. Vanilla android is the best way to go, in my opinion. (coming from an HD2 user running a NAND’d Android who used the Desire HD build but moved to a cyanogen vanilla release with a a couple of custom tweaks!)

Now there is nothing telling me not to expect an iPhone on t mobile. It’s the when factor.

Personally, I found the open platform aspects of Android to be compelling. But the iphone is a wonderful product if you like Apple’s tastes in setting everything up for you. I see no reason why T-Mobile should not offer the iphone to its customers in addition to Android phones.

  • I think t-mobile should stay as the main android/other OS carrier but AT&T already came out with the big guns with the atrix.

What if iphone came to T-mo? have to wonder how T-Mo would handle the strain in its relationship with Samsung when so many Vibrant owners threw their phones in the creek and moved up to a ligitimate phone.

There is no strain, Samsung has shat on on every carrier…especially the big T

indeed, the aesthetics of the iphone 4 are nice, but the os is crap in most of our eyes. too strict and child-like. most of us prefer our android os. why i DON’T want iphone coming to tmobile? i don’t want a crap load of people flocking over and slowing down our network! great for tmobile if they get more new customers, but bad for current users. iphone, stay away. tmobile, give us some new android phones with some dual core action!! thanks.

  • personally i wouldn’t mind, i think tmobile would increase the density of their coverage if they started selling the iphone.

  • Seanarchie

the Iphone is sooooooo OVER RATED. When you compair the MY TOUCH 4G the nexuxS so what is the big deal with this phone. it does LESS the most ANDROID phones in the market today OMG GET OFF THE NAME AND LOOK AT THE FEATURES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Please don’t mention the Nexus S, it doesn’t even support HD Video recording so please & it is just a clone of the iPhone just like every Android phone out there besides the Atrix. The only Android Phone that is stepping up the game is Atrix. The Nexus S copied the Gyroscope from the iPhone 4, Apple did it so Samsung/Google did it. Apple revolutionized the Smartphone industry & every hardware company that chooses to doesn’t innovate besides screens, processors, or software tweaking for their own flavor. The Atrix does it right PERIOD!

I wouldn’t mind having a T-mo specific iPhone. However, with the number of calls that drop between my GF and I, I’m curious if the phone is the problem or the network…

We have been using iPhones and T-Mobile USA since the very beginning. Currently we have an iPhone 4 and 2 iPhone 3gs’s. Even though we do not get 3G service since the current iPhone does not service AWS, we have noticed a real improvement in edge data speeds, while its not 3G we often see over 400kbs.

Yes we paid dearly for the phones they are true unlocked iphones (not a software unlocks) bought from Italy and Canada.

The money we have saved using t-mobile as our provider has more than offset the higher purchase price vs using ATT. Plus we have great service where we live, we could not ever get ATT 3G service at our home and this was very frustrating.

Now if t-mobile just can land the iPhone with AWS this would be perfect!

  • EnviroG

Bring it on! I’m hoping I won’t have to switch carriers to get the iphone. My Samsung Behold is over 2 years old and my next mobile will definitely be an iphone and hopefully with Magenta:-)

  • Bruce

What we are dealing with here is levels of smartness and stupidity. Apple was smart when they introduced the iPhone. They made one phone that they could sell all over the world.

Verizon is using the stupid CDMA system, along with a few other carriers around the world. Apple decided to descend to Verizon’s level of stupidity to make money off of Verizon. Apple can, and probably will, sell CDMA phones to some of the other stupid CDMA carriers around the world so they can make more money

T-Mobile USA is even stupider than Verizon. They are the only carrier in the world using their 3G and 4G system and radio frequencies. Will Apple bother to descend to T-Mobile USA’s level of stupidity? They won’t make as much money from a T-Mo phone as they will from Verizon and the other CDMA carriers. But adding T-MoUSA’s 3G and 4G to the standard GSM iPhone is nowhere near as much work as making a CDMA phone.

    • Petey

Remember that videotron and T-Mobile US uses the same Aws. But totally agree its stupid for them to buy those frequency. Should got 850/1900 like att.

      • YouKnowNotWhatYouSpeak

That wasn’t up to T-Mobile, it was up to the FCC. Instead of shuffling the spectrum licenses and requiring all carriers to work within the new frequency block that was auctioned, they forced T-Mobile to buy the bands they made available. Before commenting, you should get a better understanding of what actually happens and then take that into consideration- just saying.

  • Anonymous

Oh lord lets hope not. T-Mo just has to offer better phones like the Optimus 2x and Motorola Atrix. iPhone???? We don’t need no stinking iPhone!

    • Hate, Y U No Love?

Please, those are fanboy words. I don’t want an iPhone, I don’t like Apple, but even I can see the benefits of every carrier owning an iPhone. You don’t like it… cool, its not for you… or me. that doesn’t mean its not good for Tmobile.
If I ran a movie theater and the biggest selling movie out was a romantic comedy starring Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus that was 3 hrs long in 3D, you can bet your aZZ that movie will be playing in my theater!!

I’ve had an iPhone on TMO since 1.0.1 and I’m the same way. I’ve grown tired of the unlocking path and just want, no…crave, a simple easy time of it on TMO with my iPhone. I don’t want either at t or Verizon, I’ve been with TMO for longer than I can remember and don’t want to go anywhere else.
I’m really hoping that ip5 gets here, esp now that iOS4.3 is dropping the 3g for compatibility.

  • Jsimple

Being a blackberry user for about two years now I would love TMO to get an Iphone.

I will say it again, all Apple has to do is add a true hspda pentaband baseband chipset like Nokia. 850; 900; 1700; 1900; 2100 mhz frequencies and thats it. Sell the iPhone llike it is sold, unlocked, so then tmo can unofficially support it like it does now. When Tmo USA comes out with micro sim we will know for sure the iPhone 5 is coming to TmoUSA. Another thing, if Apple is using qualcomm’s chipset for the verizon phone, and qualcomm has a pentaband hspda chipset that is of the + variety, it is not a strech for apple to use it,

I have ATT in the bay area and lately the speeds are slowing down on my 3gs. I am hoping that tmobile or sprint gets a real iphone 4 meaning a 4g iphone. Verizon is overrated. ATT sucks because if you want to tether you give up unlimited data. I send emails to att asking for this feature for a decent price and also threaten to leave if they don’t. I mention the competition.

Apple may try to do what Samsung has done, put the same phone on all major US networks. T-Mobile and Sprint are the only ones now without the iPhone. If they achieved this, they could increase their market share. Now in order to do it properly (economically speaking), they would need a pentaband radio so that they will work on all carriers. This may come out in the iPhone 5. T-Mo and Sprint may not get an iPhone 4, but never say never about the iPhone 5.

I personally won’t get one. Don’t care for the closed system, but others do and it would benefit T-Mo with low churn (hopefully).

Once VZW has finished cannibalizing AT&T subscribers and real growth in the iPhone market is measured, then TMO will be given a chance to bid for the iPhone. If Apple can bear to do the engineering, Sprint would be a logical next partner just to give Sprint more credibility and salvage market share. TMO could well be last, primarily because a quad band phone would be seen as less than the best effort. a pentaband phone could still be locked, but it would be an annoyance. Of course, TMO should watch and see how VZW does serving their new iPhone users. If they suffer network capacity problems, well, that’s a warning. If call drops go along with this, you might be asking if it’s IOS. Having said all that, if TMO thinks HSPA+ is robust enough to handle a huge increase in usage, they will petition for the iPhone sooner. I would rather watch VZW and how it handles the demand first.

    • dapanic_man

As much as I would love for the iphone to be on Tmo yesterday this is probably the best strategy.

    • Hyam

I would have the patience to wait for T-Mobile to get the iPhone after Sprint received it. This may offer us advantages in the following ways:

First, it may help to reduce the level of impact on T-Mobile’s network.

Secondly, it may help buy some time for T-Mobile to continue upgrading their network coverage and service.

Third, it may be that the time will permit for Apple to release a more improved version of the iPhone when it comes out to T-Mobile.

I think those are pluses to be considered. However, I don’t know what is fully going on with T-Mobile’s network. Therefore, who knows? Maybe it wouldn’t matter if we did get the iPhone sooner than Sprint–or this summer for that matter. In any case, I think T-Mobile iPhone customers would be some of the most loyal, even more than VZW and even more than AT&T.

My sister just switched to Verizon for the iPhone 4. So far, she said the service in her area is great. We’ll just have to see about the other areas later. Then again, the real impact can’t be measured until a good deal of time has passed.

  • tmofan2006

“The HSDPA 3G chip in AT&T’s iPhone 4 can technically support download speeds up to 7.2 mbps, while the EVDO Rev. A standard used for Verizon’s model technically caps out at 3.1 mbps. Before anybody gets an aneurysm from these numbers: They’re both purely hypothetical speeds caps that no one will likely ever bump up against in real life. As anyone who has used an iPhone on AT&T can tell you, the overburdened network often produces pitiful speeds in its current state, and an impromptu speed test also shows Verizon outperforming AT&T in real life. Still, AT&T is already prepping ads that claim a speed advantage on its home network, and carrier-side upgrades could propel the AT&T iPhone faster than its Verizon sibling in the future – hypothetically.”

Big Red iphone sucks.Lets Go Tmo

  • I’d love to see Tmobile get it just for the little guy to score. I wish we had our 3G on the same frequency. we’d have so much freeeeedom!!!

This would be HUGE for t-mobile.

I’m an android supporter day 1. G1 since launch. Currently have the G2..

But, if tmobile got the iPhone, I’d be there day 1 picking it up!

It’s hardware is beautiful. The OS is the smoothest out there. The scrolling/pinching, web browsing etc.

It’s extremely polished. Gets the job done BEAUTIFULLY. I hardly ever use adobe flash on my G2…

Oh, and Apples App store is amazing. It’s massive and full of unique, polished apps/games.

With Apple, you don’t really care if it has dual core… Or what kind of GPU, how much ram, etc…

Because no matter what you know it will run smoooooth regardless. Running the best Apps/games out there. There’s what only 5 versions of the iPhone in past 3 years or so?

If you get the newest iPhone, you know you’ll be set for the next 2 years no problem.

Android phones are out there by the bucket full…. A lot of crappy ones, and if you want the best one, it will over shadowed in a month… And some will have trump cards over the other. So your not really happy with your android phone. And you there waiting for the latest OS updates that might NEVER come…

Android has options. But I’m still waiting for gingerbread on the G2… Probably will be here in march…

With the iPhone, everyone would get the latest OS updates. Androids great. But iPhone is no fuss.

    • like i said: lazy, stupid people like iphone. afterall, who wants to think for themselves? if you suck with technology, def get an iphone. If you have a brain in your head, look elsewhere. hahaaha

I use an iphone, I not lazy, nor stupid not unable to think for myself. I have a brain, I used to create this website, to tie my shoes in the morning, to type this message along with the million other minuscule tasks I perform on a daily basis.

Beefy, David is right. A person is not lazy, stupid, or any other subjective thing you might attempt to impose on them just because they don’t side with you. You have used an iPhone and experienced that version of iOS. You prefer Android. Great. That is what I use. I’m really digging the 2.3 update. Except for some minor issues, Android is an excellent alternative.

You, like all others, are intelligent beings. Some people just choose to invest their intelligence elsewhere.

@UsernameGranted: I do agree with you. While I’m really loving my Adroid 2.3 update, I would love iOS’s consistency of performance. Plus, iPhones get good return on them in the future. That would mostly have a lot to do because of the hardware used, but still, they are highly appraised compared to other phones.

T-Mobile has the Apple presents, so there is no doubt as stated that the relationship exist. Whether Humm presses the envelope is another thing. I feel like everything else is all “politics as usual”. Allowing Verizon and AT&T to play as the “Jokers” in the U.S. is just bull when a “Global” giant like TMO can just take over abroad if done strategically. It can be done, the technology and spectrum is there and the Master Minds like Robert Dotson, Roland Mahler and P.Humm are present. Having this many great minds on both sides of the water is a blanket to know TMO is strong and have a presents, but means nonthing if your not riding “beside” and not “behind” your competition.
The iPhone is not the bar but it is a key component to the sales of the carriers in the U.S. TMO U.S. and Apple should have not allowed the CDMA division to adapt this unit into there line up before them. Which brings me back to the original statement of “politics as usual” MONEY, COVERUPS, and Lobbying with the FCC just to stay ahead.
TMO im faithful to you, but did we not learn our lesson when the FEDS and FCC didnt want to come off the spectrum to allow you to launch 3G at the expected launch date. Im just not into being setup for failure just to allow the U.S. icon CDMA posterchild big red to lead the pack without respecting the architects. If TMO is not going to rock the cradle and become the “Global Monopoly”, you need to atleast take out them lame ass Orange and Blue mofos, and take the number 2 slot…….

this would be great for many of the people who are not capable of using an android phone it would also drive google to innovate more and more, as it is i cant understand why people can be such fanboys to apple when android blows the doors off the iphone. Some of the most essential things are way better on android then they will ever be for a long time on the iphone example: Google Maps, Customization, Notification System, Widgets etc… and manufacturers keep adding to that list with devices like the optimus x, the moto Atrix most people just use there phone for fun so they choose the iphone for apps and games but feature wise it simple and overrated i wasnt impressed with it on At&t and it had nothing to do with coverage. Oh and to whoever said android is like a baby you should go get an iphone and save yourself a headache if you did some research you’d know task killers are not needed in froyo or even eclair havent used one since day one on either a vibrant or a g2 and they run just as good. I will give the iphone that its quality control is great even though i had to exchange mine 3 times they tend to work out good

    • Anonymous

Awesome insight from someone who knows his way around both devices.

I’ve used both extensively. Android is my 1st love in the touch screen mobile device world. I still love it, and seeing it grow.

Apple or android to me is like bananas and oranges, I like both. But I do like Apple (the company) too.

So if iPhone came to t-mobile, i’d probably buy it and swap sims to android here and there.

They both equally have their +/-‘s….. Having both qualities in one would be the mega all you need phone.

      • well said. i used an iphone briefly and it had no signal and couldnt even pull up Google. I then used android in the same exact spot, 4 bars and youtube loaded HIDEF vids in about 4 1/2 seconds. So whats the better device? i dont even get why there is an argument about it. I understand the people who foolishly bought an iphone dont want to admit they got bamboozled but, lets be honest. You bought a Ford when you couldve had a Mercedes.

        • Erica

I had a MyTouch and was LOSING EMAIL because the Android email client is just that buggy and horrible. Can’t even move messages between folders, so it just loses the mail. Pandora would stutter when a call came in and I’d lose both the app and the call. Phones that need a task manager to kill whatever app is raping battery life? The Amazon mp3 store let me buy a song, sure.. but I couldn’t play it until I rebooted the phone!

Oh, but I can install a flashy wallpaper that has fish swimming around. Great.

God, you’re a clueless android fanboy. It reminds me of how arrogant Windows NT users were years ago. Bamboozled? At least with my iPhone I can play the music I just bought, Google Maps isn’t crashing with out of memory errors, and I’m not losing my email anymore.

We’ll see what happens when Verizon starts shipping the iPhones on Feb 10th. I have a feeling that Android sales will plummet. (and to the earlier guy.. a phone is junk when it’s a BOGO? dude, Android has been on BOGO sales multiple times..)

My Galaxy S hated on me BAAAADDDD…. Sent a text message to the wrong girl…. No bueno..
It also lasted a good…. 3-5 hrs before having to plug it in? My iPhone would last close to two days without ever seeing a cord which comes in real handy when you don’t make it back to your place for a day or two. So quick to charge too…. Add the fact that the iOS Facebook app allows you to delete wall posts from other people on your wall directly from the app, the built in screen capture without ever having to bother spending my time learning how to root my phone, the superior responsiveness of the touch screen… Hell, the majority of the apps on iOS just have such a more polished, legit feel to them.

I tried all these Android versions of the exact same iOS apps. They felt like cheap cardboard cutouts, they looked cheaper, they worked cheaper, they ARE cheaper. No wonder Google isn’t happy with the amount of $$$ their app market is making.

If I’m going to pay full price and own two smartphones (I already have the MT4G), I’d rather it be an Apple device. Let’s just hope it allows HSPA+ or is the iPhone 5. Wishful thinking. Happy with MyTouch+CM7 tho.

  • Big J

    Bring it already..!!

I told Mr. Jobs I am trying to spend money with his company…. This would be a good start..!

    Come on Apple…

  • Enoel69

I have long thought a while back that the iPhone will soon make its way to Tmo USA, since it was already in Europe. I mean for Apple to truely combat Android devices which i must add are in all major networks, they will have to spread their wings. Tmo USA will make another nice home for the iPhone but it will have to be HSPA+ and a bigger screen than the 3.5 inches. I for one i will stick with Android but there will be many customers on Tmo who will go for the iPhone. I forsee an HSPA+ dual core iPhone 5 with at least a 3.7 to 4.inch screen eventually making a home on Magenta. If Apple intend to peel away some die hard Android owners, the specs have to be that and more.

  • Apple’s greed for control is why the iPhone is still only available on two networks in the United States. Apple knows how popular their phones are and think they are smart by limiting the phone to two carriers. The ironic thing is that they did not learn their lesson from dealing with AT&T, which was a sinking ship. Now they partner with Verizon and the same thing will happen, watch. Android will continue to flourish because of Apple’s strategy, which to me is good. The iPhone is a great phone, but I (as many, many others do) hate Apple’s arrogance.

    • agreed 100%. we all love to bash the iphone but in reality it is a great device. The sad thing is, Apple’s arrogance will be their own downfall. It’s almost BIBLICAL. and history definitely repeats itself. And lets be honest, Android is the BIGGEST threat to iphone and its only a matter of time until Apple’s greed buries them. you are right.,

“Apple’s greed for control is why the iPhone is still only available on two networks in the United States”

BS. the carrier’s greed for control is what blocked it. Verizon is the one that went begging Apple to carry it and Apple said “not unless you agree to NONE of your unremovable apps or branding.” Verizon said “ok” finally. VZW loves their VCast stuff and logos everywhere.
aND come on, we’ve been hearing about “when Android matures” for years now. It can still barely manage to handle IMAP email right or Exchange without some janky third party app.

I use an unlocked iPhone on T-Mobile USA for the past couple of years. Love Apple and love T-Mo. I think adding Verizon first before T-Mobile was a strategic necessity. If T-Mo USA was given the iPhone before VZW, I don’t think T-Mobile could have handled all AT&T escapees. Having VZW allows an orderly distribution of iPhone users. That said, I really want and need a new iPhone. Until T-Mo US gets it, I’m stuck without 3G.

Me too… I had a Vibrant for about 3 months… Those were 3 months where I couldn’t even make it home before having to either plug in at work or in the car. This isn’t the only Android with battery life complaints either. I’ve heard and seen the same from Droids, Evos, G2s, myTouch 4Gs… It’s all the same.

My iPhone 3GS on ATT lasted close to two days sometimes without ever seeing a wall socket or car charger. Its lasting even more now with edge but I miss the 3g… Need that AWS iPhone maaaaaaaannnnn

  • i guess the one thing I dont understand about the iphone is this: if it is so great, how come even the newest one doesnt support Flash? who wants half the internet on their supposed internet phone? not I. android all the way

    • julie

it’s because the overwhelming majority of smartphone owners don’t give a crap about Flash. Hell, Adobe only got mobile flash for Android shipping a few months ago and it still sucks. Flash is a horrid pile of garbage.

      • BeyondTheKM.com

I agree. Flash is crap. There isn’t a web site that I use regularly who hasn’t seen my complaint about Flash usage on their web site. The iPhone is great BECAUSE it doesn’t support Flash.

        • iEatBabiesGrrr

man FAIL on that reply man. For you, flash may suck, but for the rest of us who obviously use the net for more things, flash is a necessity. Even my iPad, its pointless to have that big ass screen but still have to go pull out my laptop if I need to do online exams for school that use flash. Adobe may not have the best User interface but no one can be stupid enough to act like Flash isn’t a necessity. Its not like “Real Player” and “QuickTime” have made a big enough dent to throw Adobe out of business. All I’m saying is if Steve Jobs wants iPohne to be the all around, everything and anything phone, it needs to get with the Adobe times and stop acting like its “above it all.”

You are wanting to use the iPhone and iPad for things they were not designed for, nor marketed for. Apple and Steve Jobs never said that those devices were made for taking classes online. In fact, he said that it was essentially a media consumption device. Ideally through their store. Wether you like that or not, that is what it is. The fact of the matter is that the iPad can do most of the things I do on my laptop most of the time. I can access my classes online. I personally hate flash. I am happy that sites are starting to make the transition to the future because of Apple.

I’ve been an android user since the g1 came out and I love it!!! But I also have the itouch and when u compare android to apple its like android has tons of apps but really there’s only about 100 that are even usefull and none of them are even that fun that you could sit there and play for hours on. But the iphone on the other hand is so fun and if I’m going to pay for a phone that costs that much I would choose the one that I know I would use. In other words iphone>android

  • Strike the deal & make it happen Tmo!

  • Candybarhj

It only makes sense to go ahead and put the iPhone in Tmos line up get it done!!!

  • Titanx1970

It’s funny that I see people going for Iphone because first it doesn’t have flash, second if your product is truly good it should stand on it own, iphone fails to be used to for what it was basicly made for and that is a phone. Really the reason the battery last so long because its not able to handle flash because it would drain the battery, you play Angry birds and have a long lasting battery? Don’t think so! Plus if it did go to 4G it would have the same problem with battery life. It doesn’t take a person with a science major to figure that out. I have had a iphone 3gs and now I have a Galaxy S, I unlocked my friends iphone so he can go on tmobile and I rooted my phone to last longer than any iphone. Freedom to change the phone display and how is acts is more expression. If you like to to be a clone copy then buy a iphone. If you like a phone with the ability to change the style that fits you get a Android. It is simple as that. If the iphone gets the same functions of android then the problem of battery life will be the same.
