T-Mobile Unlikely To Sell iPhone In Near Future, Will Combat With Android

Speaking at an investor relations meeting, T-Mobile stated that they were unlikely to carry the iPhone anytime in the near future.  Perhaps the biggest issue is the use of the 1700Mhz 3G band acting as a major barrier to selling the iPhone.  T-Mobile is, of course, open to selling the iPhone, however the T-Mobile CEO explained that the chipset is the major roadblock.

“We’re not part of the chipset today.  But we have chipsets which support 5 or up to 10 spectrum bands in the market, so we should expect there will be more degrees of freedom going forward … and so the chances will rise.”

PCMag

During the actual investor event we are currently watching, Humm did go on to say that T-Mobile is prepared to battle the iPhone with Android.

As the iPhone has lead to almost 10% churn, T-Mobile is prepared to combat a 3G iPhone with 4G Android and combat the 3G iPad with the 4G LG G-Slate.

I know that Humm has said they will be aggressive in marketing, however, as a former employee, I’ve heard that many many times before. If they do not market as much as VZW and ATT, they can fight the good fight all day long and not make a dent.

Don’t want the I-Phone, I would hope they combat the I-Phone with Tegra powered Android devices that will be the talk of the smartphone world. These Tegra powered devices will bring tons of attention and customers to T-Mobile. Even if the entry level customer will not want these phones, the attention these devices will bring to T-Mobile will spark tons of new customer interest. Bring the Tegra power to T-Mobile or the top smartphone customer will go where they can buy these devices. Please T-Mobile we want to stay with you, get us Tegra and add some more horsepower to your HSPA+. Hopefully inside building coverage will improve with this added horsepower. I have my Nexus one and my new MyTouch 4G on my desk in front of a window where I get great coverage. Give us more horsepower.
    THANK YOU T-MOBILE loyal customer

Joe and Jane Q Public doesn’t know what Tegra is, nor do they care. If they knew techy stuff, VZW wouldn’t have been selling the Blackyberry Storm like it was going out of style but switching to TMO for the G1 and MyTouch 3G..

And you can have a 5000 MHZ phone, doesn’t do one bit for coverage. Only spectrum frequency and tower placement can improve that..

      • Petey

Agree, the public is only interested what’s currently “in” at the moment, and right now it’s the iPhone, if TMobile can’t bring the iPhone to their subscribers, then expect to lose a lot of more subscribers in the future. What’s funny is that they say they will try to be the third carrier in the country, yeh right. that probably won’t be happening.

Been a TMO customer for years, and have patiently waited for the iPhone to become official. I carry an unlocked iPhone now. I’ve bought and carried 4 different Android phones, and have very little interest in having another one. I like my phone fully baked. TMO has until June to announce an official iPhone. If they don’t, and VZ has an LTE version, I’m gone, sadly.

    • Petey

I’m on the same boat. I really don’t care about android (i’m using a vibrant) & I want the iPhone. As I stated already, if iPhone is to come to t-mobile, I will upgrade three of my lines imediately to it, but now that they already stated they’re not going to release it, I’m not going renew my contract and leave t-mobile when the next iphone comes.

    • NutsandBolts

Feel free to leave then! Just because YOU think T-Mobile should get an iPhone doesn’t mean all of it’s customer’s do. Why exactly you think making an ultimatum on a news website is going to hurry T-Mobile into releasing a phone, I’ll never know. No one is going to beg you to stay. Have fun!

      • Petey

Let see how many subscriber will T-Mobile loses when the Verizon iPhone is ready for purchase to the consumer. I won’t be surprise if they loses alot.

I think there’s nothing wrong with iPhone coming to T-mobile, it will help keep those consumers who want to stay with t-mobile & want the iphone, and may attract more people when t-mobile have the iphone w/ some sort of cheap rate plans. Iphone is what some/most regular consumer want nowaday, they don’t care about this or that, they want the iPhone. Only phone geeks like us know wassup.

      • sirphunkee

Um…I’ve read his post over again several times, and I’m failing to see the part where he says he thinks his “ultimatium” is going to spur anybody into doing anything….could you please point that part out for me?

The way I read it, it was just saying that HE really wants an iPhone, and if TMobile doesn’t have one by then, he won’t wait anymore and will go elsewhere.

Opinion. Not Ultimatum. Jeesh….have you run out of dogs to kick or something?

        • NutsandBolts

Yes…I have run out of small puppies to kick. And actually the part where he says “T-Mobile has until June to release an official iPhone. If they don’t and VZ has an LTE version, I’m gone sadly” would be considered an ultimatum. The fact is, we are not getting the iPhone anytime soon. We are going to have to rock with what we have in the meantime. Which means amazing Android phones are all we are going to have in the near future. If that’s not to his liking, he should leave and spend his money at a company that is meeting his needs. Might be blunt and to the point, but it’s the truth.

      • donnyc

yeah NutsandBolts, you tell him (or her). Go ahead and leave then gone, we dont care!!! T-Mobile doesn’t need customers!! Got Dang!! Why are people so obsessed with the iPhone. I will absolutely not deny the fact that its a great phone, that it was insanely innovative, absolutely responsible for where we are now with smart phones, and a fine solid device. But really people, suggesting the demise of a company because they won’t be getting the iPhone anytime soon??!! Are we completely blind to the fact that competing smartphones have improved by leaps and bounds over the past few years, let alone the last couple of years especially with the introduction of Android. I can understand we all have our preferences some preferring Windows, some preferring Android, some preferring iPhone but man, some people seem to worship the ground the iphone fell on. Apple has done a very VERY fine job with advertising to create such a loyal group of consumers (some of which who have never used an iPhone in their life, but hey, weren’t we all raised to know that the iPhone is the only great phone that can ever exist as long as time exists). Competition is ridiculous now and will only get better. There is absolutely nothing your iPhone can do that the top of the line Android phone can’t do, unless you’re looking for loads of uselss apps, which don’t you worry, tons and tons and tons of useful apps are available on Android phones, its just a matter of time we get more of those insanely nonsensical apps that boosts the Apple market place to those “superior” numbers.

Patience people, patience. There will be a day where you can’t quite honestly convince yourself that the iPhone is the only worthy smartphone on the market. Perhaps you’ll realize phones like the Motorola Atrix might just be a fine specimen, a fine specimen indeed. I mean really that phone is the ish!

Now I do admit Tmobile isn’t quite on their superphone game and I certainly hope that they step that up, but really there ain’t no way in heck that I’m leaving Tmobile with ridiculously competitvely priced plans to possess the “coveted, almighty, crazily awesome” iPhone.

    • SEFan

I think T-Mobile has a really good selection of Android devices right now. The G2 and MyTouch 4G, the Vibrant, the Nexus S, the Vibrant Super Leggiera (just kidding!). More Samsung devices than I’d like, but plenty of speed, screen beauty, and great features. And that’s only going to get better in the next year.

But… I like the iPhone. I use iOS on my iPod Touch, and on an iPad. I’m used to it. I’m a Mac user and the interface with iOS is more seamless than interacting with Android. It would just be a shorter learning curve for me. And if you’re like me and like the iPhone there is no Android substitute. So I hope El Presidente is being coy, like the Verizon CEO was before they rolled the iPhone.

      • http://twitter.com/Legione13 Vin L.

Ideally, T-Mobile would have at least two 4G, dual-core Android offerings (one with a keyboard, and one without). *Then* I’d say that they had an Android selection to surpass the other carriers.

        • SublimeDavid

If they are seriously gonna compete with iOS in the short term I completely agree with you, have one of those dual cores run vanilla as well. And please nomore Motorolas… I laughed when we put out their Customer Support Cards for the Latest Cliq 2, which basically means this to the consumer: Moto Cust Support Card = Our phone will fail you (again)–>(for the Idk how many times at this point) but call us for an appointment so we can act like we care and look at the problem only to not do anything about it (again)…..(wait except for verizon)

the title of this article should read, “TMobile Unlikely to leave Last Place in the Near Future”

    • Frank

4 Months ago the CEO of Verizon wireless said essentially the same thing. OH OOPS look what is happening in February! like these companies know how to tell the truth. I

      • SEFan

Yeah, I find Humm’s explanation a bit disingenious. The current iPhone 4 on AT&T has WCDMA on like 5 frequencies: the 2 Euro ones (900, 2100 mhz), 2 for AT&T (850, 1900) and one more I can’t recall. Plus quad-band GSM. So with another year, a new chipset (already rumored to be dual-core), a new iOS, an AWS iPhone should be easily doable. Let’s see what happens when iPhone 5 releases…

        • Petey

I hope that’s the case. Now i have a little bit of hope that the iphone may come to tmobile.

Nokia has one or acouple of its phone with the band that’s compatible with aws & wcdma (both att and T-Mobile compatible). I’m sure apple can do the same.

unfortunately in most people’s eyes, popular is better. this is rarely the case. the iphone is popular. android devices are better. its for that reason that while i own an iphone and a vibrant (and use both) i wouldn’t get a t-mobile iphone although i would hope t-mo would offer it.

i think the best thing for t-mo customers would be if apple sells an unlocked iphone. i know a lot of people who could care less about data speeds, they have an iphone on t-mobile and that is all they care about.

    • SublimeDavid

Quite true unfortunately but there are people like us that love tweaking phones etc and actually care about functionality and usage of the phone, and then there are people that like to be told what to do, great example of this is the people who call Bill Oreily and ask him how to interpret the news. Pretty simple terms its: Android = People who actually want a unique usage and customization, iOS = people that are not very smart and need to be told how to do everything (including feeding themselves and wiping their ass), unfortunately there are alot of those people out there. Ironically since I have both phones (long story) It’s pretty simple to strike down the Iphone4 when you put it side by side with a phone like the Mytouch4g and show a customer just exactly they will be restricted to (paying for everything such as Music) and Android (you can download MP3 downloader and get the same stuff and do whatever you want with your phone) I even sold two Mytouch 4gs to two customers that were thinking about leaving us the other week because they were told iOS was the greatest thing ever, Until I showed them a side by side comparison. Needless to say they stayed. Tmobile needs better marketing since these people were clueless that there were acutally phones that were way better than the Iphone4 and faster too..

Crap, I wish they’d just talk to apple exec. I wish T-mobile USA’s 3G bands were like T-Mobile DE 3G bands, so they could of offered the iPhone, can they buy it from the FCC or not? I know the AWS band it was basically their only option.

    • SublimeDavid

what they need to do is stay away from Clearwire crap frequencies and go for some of those lower frequencies that other Tmobile parts in Europe on using. After that leverage their international presence and offer some unbeatable international deals such as package roaming deals that include T-Mobile coverage in other countries, that will hit verizon att and sprint where it hurts most, their business clients, if they are going after that market segment there is no way those three could leverage any kinda deals that tmobile could if they were to leverage their international presence better than they do now. Not sure why or how they manage the roaming agreements but it doesnt make much sense for T-Mobile to charge T-Mobile for roaming when they are all owned by DT. Seeing this new CEO had a strong presence in Europe he could be the man to make it all happen. Sounds like T-Mobile’s unique presence in DT is coming to a close and will be leveraged more closely by the giant (Good thing) as DT can flex its muscle a bit more with it and Expand coverage, strike better phone deals, etc.

You know that would be something to be able to do. A person has a Tmobile phone and be able to roam free of charge anywhere in the Tmobile company be they in Europe or in the U.S. or wherever. I’m sure DT can fix this somehow. And be able to use their text minutes wherever and also whatever rate plan they are on use there talk minutes without having to buy another stupid local company sim card. Now I can see that going outside of DT, but within DT??? Cmon all of the Tmobile companies.

@Julian…I try to be respectful of other peoples comments but I have got to ask…What the ^%^&
Is something similar, maybe a Nexus One, MyTouch4G, Optimus 2, HD2, Blackberry…not sure your question???

Maybe he means a phone with the quality of the iphone4.

Hold an iPhone4 next to a Mytouch4g…. iPhone blows it away.

Teenybopper mytouch design vs iPhone4. Smooth as silk iOS vs cheesy mytouch sense u.i.

Android app market vs Apples App store.

Sure I like the open/customizable Android, but Apple is no fuss. When Apple releases 4.0-4.2 OS etc, everyone downloads/updates day 1 no worries. Not 6 months later…

Well lets see, I have both those phones (MT4G Without the Sense Crap and OC’d to 1.7 ghz) and Iphone4, they feel the same to me Ive had the Iphone since late Sept and must say that at first the OS was pretty nice, but once I rooted the Mytouch4g and got that sense crap out of it, ive been pimping out my Mytouch4g more than anything. Tmobile needs to have some more Vanilla phones and update them constantly. Also features like the HD2 Transformer movie helps. I remember a ton of people coming in to see the phone with the Transformers movie on it. They need to develop a good relationship with LG as Samsung blows monkey nuts with updates and LG has proven they are willing to push them out constantly. Pretty sad when a Optimus T has 2.2 android and the Vibrant doesnt. Track pads are nice and probably a cleaner look on the Mytouch 4g would make it a visibally much nicer phone but build quality id say they are even. Im afraid to drop my IPhone4 since it seems like it will crack even on one drop (happened to my coworker) Ive dropped the Mytouch4g a few times once on concret and it still looks great. So dont speak if you dont know hands down.

Something “similar” to me, means a phone that is 100 % compatible with Mac IOS 4. People forget that this is not just about the iPhone, but about our computer’s operating systems. Many of us do not have nor want a Windows system. So, unless they are compatible with my Mac and Mobile Me, all those androids to me are useless.

Something similar to me means that I can sync my calendar, contacts, bookmarks, and especially my music, videos, and artwork in a fly with a Mac computer, and that the music, sound, and interface is as good or better than the iphone. Also, that you can sync with multiple Mac computers at once and that the battery life actually has some life… Last but not least, friendliness of a gadget is important, especially on a cell phone, not to be walking around and falling on the third rail, or missing some quality time with the wife, cause we are traveling with cellphone menus.
