T-Mobile Says No Way To Raised Prices For 4G Usage

While there was certainly a lot to look forward to coming out of the T-Mobile announcement in terms of data speeds, the most important point was that T-Mobile will not raise data plans for 4G usage.  T-Mobile said unequivocally that they don’t believe they need to charge a “premium or “toll” for 4G use.  This is great news, just great news as other carriers plan tiered pricing structures for use with their upcoming 4G networks.  It’s reasons such as these and decisions like this that make me a proud T-Mobile customer!  Way to go, Tmo!

Listen, we both know that press conference was a huge disappointment

  • Chris

This makes me proud to stay with their company as long as I have. Where all the other carriers wanted to charge me a deposit for less than perfect credit, T-Mobile didn’t ask anything up front. They even used to allow me to charge phones to my cell phone bill. Plus, I’ve always been able to resolve issues without any problems. They’ve earned their JD Power awards for sure.

Definitely glad to hear this. Thanks again for doing that David.

Amazing news, but I would like to take advantage of this with, well you know… BETTER DEVICES!

    • Get Your Facts Str8

Tmobile gets the first android device, tmobile gets the first 2 GSM 4G device in the US. T-Mobile gets the best of all 3 simultaneously released Galaxy S phones (i love how people kept on blaming tmo for the Froyo update mix-up citing the fact that the epic has Froyo, DOES IT REALLY?) Tmobile gets the best Windows Phone, T-Mobile turns your G2 into a blazing fast mobile hot spot that can power 8 devices, pure google without any crap UI’s. Tmobile brings you Googles baby of a phone FIRST in the Nexus 1 and Nexus S. Yet people complain about lack of handsets? People listen to yourself!!!

Tell me about these supposed super phones on other carriers? Want to know some facts? The EVO has an 8mp camera with a shitty ass lens, so the iphone 4 camera at 5mp is better. Who cares about mp people? Do your research. All of the Verizon Droid phones have terrible ass UI overlays, The best phone they have isnt out yet (Thunderbolt which is a complete facsimile of EVO, AT&T took out a phone that also looks like the EVO except for a FFC. TMo does that and everyone cries like a bitch. ATT gets a pass? They slaughtered tmo at the show? Really? I have been checking out this site for over a year now and have noticed how increasingly anti-tmobile these posts are getting. Why sit around in a tmo blog to bash tmo? Get a life people.
      Tmobile or Die!!!

      • TMO_ATL

        I agree… **round of a applause**

Also, TMo has the MOST Android phones available and the most with 4G speed capabilities. Yes, some of you might not have the maximum, but what other carrier does? I would be happy paying $40 less a month on Edge/3G rather paying more and still getting the same results. Let it be know as well, TMOBILE is expanding.

        8mp vs 5mp vs 3.2mp. I dont see much of a difference b/t 8 vs 5 depending on the flash…..

Love T-Mobile! So Affordable and Great quality! Bring down Big Red and At&terrible

    • Bobert

ya right! maybe if they did raise their cost by like 2 bucks a month and used that money to increase their shitty coverage and get better phones.
They just got slaughtered at CES 2011 just as they did 2010.
Let the bodies hit the floor.

by who or what? if you are so unhappy with t-mobile go spend $30 bucks more a month with ATT and verizon for their so called better devices and coverage

        • hi!

there’s no question they DO have better networks and devices (at least Verizon anyway). You hit the nail on the head though…..we’re all here cause we save $30 a month. But for how long will we sit by and “settle”

Shitty coverage? anyone here could really tell you otherwise including me.

      • Lb

Agreed, their coverage is pretty shitty. I was in Vegas over the weekend and got no 3g inside 50% of the hotels I went to. Always switching to Edge, Gprs and no service. 3g was solid outside on the Strip.

k, so then why did I have to upgrade my data plan when I went from my Cliq XT to the MT4G?

    • http://twitter.com/FR35HM1NDZ Jamille Browne

      You DIDN’T have to lol

    • Josh

It may be a different name, but it’s the same data service. They just require that you take the new $30 unlimited web only price when you do the upgrade.

hopefully they feel the same way about the grandfathered unlimited text+data plans

  • David

This is good news! Why? Well, the 4G coverage is just terrible. I regularly get bounced between Edge and HSPA+ here in the Bay Area, just blocks apart. I would never pay a premium for 4G, especially with such poor HSPA+ coverage.

Happy to be a TMO customer! They are doing excellent and only getting better by beating other companies prices and not charging premiums if you pass a certain amount of Data. Way to go TMobile!

  • Maarnold1775

Well of course. That is a way of making up to the vast majority of customers who will prob never see 3G, 4G etc.

  • Samuel

I upgrade from my 2-year old G1 to the MYTOUCH 4G a month ago. The computer system would not let me upgrade without changing my plan to the $30 a month. They said it was because it’s a 4G phone and I would have to pay to use 4G even though I don’t even have 3G in my area yet, They keep promising and moving the date back but nothing yet. I reluctantly went ahead with the up grade thinking that I would call the next day and return the phone if I wasn’t satisfied. Keep in mind that I’ve been paying $24.99 a month for unlimited EDGE +400 text messages (NO 3G OR 4G) for over 2 years while waiting patiently for anything. Now they want me to pay $30 monthly and I would have to add messaging. I called the next day and the rep told me that my account still shows me paying $24.99 as in the past and that they didn’t change it in their system after all. Sounds great right? The only issue was she then told me that my phone, even though it’s a 4G phone is fixed by them to receive up to 3G but not 4G. And that I could keep paying the $24.99 unless I want my phone to be able to receive 4G coverage, then I would have to pay the $30…..I think I need to give them another call.

  • Samuel

Well, i called. The answer is that i can keep my grandfathered $24.99 unlimited data and 400 messages with 3G or pay $34 for unlimited 4G data and 400 messages. So for me, the 4G is $9.01 more. Not gonna do it yet, Am never in a 4G area except when travelling about once a month. May consider it if and when it ever comes here. We still are stuck on EDGE. I traveled through Knoxville today and found their coverage spotty. 3G many places, then would drop off to GRPS or EDGE.

    • tmo rsl rep

it is called 4g web but it is the same. the 24.99 grandfathered plan that your on we have not offered since we switched to the new even more and even more plus plans in october of 2009. if it is a non req feature than you will have to switch but if you are on a req feature than all you have to do is talk to your local tmo rep or to customer care to save the same req feature over.

…but they charge one price for 3g and a higher price for 4g.  *confused.* So it is tiered no?  (25 for 3G 35 for 4G.)

  • Cactussk8ter

They won’t charge a premium for their “4g” because it is not true 4g speeds. Currently no one has true 4g, transfer speeds must reach 100 mbps in order trip be considered true 4g by standards. Its still faster than their normal 3g but they really shouldn’t be marketing it as 4g. Verizon is currently the fastest mobile network out of all but not the cheapest either. I’ve been a t mobile user for 8 years now and still sticking with them. Can’t beat their price. Realistically I would never need true 4g for anything, their current “4g” streams movies flawlessly.
