T-Mobile Question And Answer Session After CES 2011 Press Event

I believe I saved the best for last with this video from the end of the T-Mobile 2011 CES Press Event featuring from left to right, T-Mobile CEO Philip Humm, CTO Neville Ray and CMO Cole Brodman. These are amongst the three most important people in the T-Mobile USA organization so when they speak, we should listen. This video contains all kinds of fun stuff like…you know, you just better watch!

P.S. One final sorry, I’m sorry about the shaky camera work!

What?!?!? No one asked why T-Mobile is giving lousy support to its existing phones, like the myTouch 3G Slide which they’ve been says will get Android 2.2. “soon” for almost 8 months?

I’m a bit short on sympathy! I purchased a Moto Cliq in December ’09. Until last month, it was stuck on 1.5 – and I HIGHLY suspect that was due to friggin’ MotoBlur. We now have 2.1 – and I’m SURE they’re done!

      • TRUSTED SOURCE

They are done, this is thanks to Motorola, not T-Mobile.

    • Briguydj32

mytouch 3G is 1.5 years old… get with the times.

    • pimpslappedya

well lets be honest…. remmeber the mytouch3g slide commercials? the phone is geared towards 12 year olds. yall kiddies dont need no update. drink your milk.

      • Tyrone M Jackson

The Slide was released in May 2010 with Android 2.1. Despite T-Mobile having WiFi calling on all of its Nokia & Blackberry WiFi capable phones since 2007, prior to Android 2.2 T-Mobile has not had this crucial feature on its Android phones, and they’ve gone to great lengths to downplay this deficiency. Aside from the keyboard and a few internal aspects (exact processor, internal memory amount), it’s functionally identical to all of the others in the myTouch series. If you knew how to write Android code, rather than were a mere shepple consumer, you’d know that. Anyway, the clamor for T-Mobile to stop saying “we’ll fix it soon” for 8 months, and actually “fix it”, is fully justified. It also is a warning to anyone buying a T-Mobile phone – don’t buy on promise. And most of all, given the markup over the COGS on these phones when sold at full price x5, don’t replace your phone at full price.

    • TRUSTED SOURCE

This will actually occur in the first quarter of 2011.

Maybe T-Mobile can answer a question for me? I want to know why we were let down so massively by our carrier? I have been a loyal customer since T-Mobile was Voice-stream. Why is it that we ALWAYS get the second best devices? Why is it that if a really nice phone comes out, Verizon will get it and we will sit here saying maybe next time? I am out of contract now,(have been since November and was waiting til after CES to see what I could upgrade to. I am now thinking I will go over to Verizon. I already have Verizon for my work phone and think I may just get one for my personal. I can’t even get 3G at my home!!!!! I have a 3G device which will only get edge. It’s ridiculous!!! I can go about 20 minutes way and get 3G but not at home and I’m only 26 miles from downtown St. Louis. I am seriously tired of the crap T-Mo! I was really hoping for the Iphone but as we all see, it’s going to Big Red to be announced Tuesday. I was really hoping for the LG Black but no, we’ll get the second rate 2x which has NONE of the really fantastic features of the Black. Thanks so much for the loyalty rewards guys! Maybe you can explain this to me without telling me that your customer base is young and price considerate so they don’t want a real super-phone. I will tell you that I am not young and while I may be price motivated, the other carriers have high-end phones that match in price what you are charging for the second rate phones so stop being full of crap and get honest!

    • Burd411

Kinda felt the same way when I was stuck with my BB 8900 with no real options for BB coming down the pike. For the same price as the Bold I got the MyTouch 4G and I am loving it. It is a great device, apart from the so so battery life. My co-worker with the IPone 4 is green with envy and another co-working, when he saw my MyTouch went right out the next day and bought the Samsung Facsinate. He too is grren with envy because he can’t get 4G. At home in a small market twice the size of Cleveland, I am getting 5 mbs and in some places as high as 8 mbs. I am very happy with the performance and may just buy another one for my wife. TMO’s data plan can not be touched by any of the other carriers. in fact my IPhone 4 friend has to run his on WiFi because he can’t afford the $49 data plan with AT&T. What a waste.

    • Joe

So I guess the MyTouch 4G, the Samsung Vibrant, the HD2, and the HD7 are all crap in your eyes? If you’re so “tired of the crap”, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

      • Crazythunder1968

MyTouch 4G–phone for the wife and kids.
the Samsung Vibrant–use your gps to find me.and call me when you get your next update.
        HD2-well known signal issues,…windows
        HD7 –once again….windows

        • Crazythunder1968

i installed every radio imagineable on 3 different hd2′s. everyone of them would toggle the 3g/2g signal on and off on a regular basis. did the same with android on it. i know what i’m doing. i finally gave up on it. and if you search google, you’ll see this is an issue dating back to it’s release for alot of people.

No they are LAST YEARS GOODS!!! And how about you don’t worry about where
the door hits me? That was written to T Mobile and clearly by you handle,
that is NOT you. The FACTS are that tmo consistently gets lower tier
products. Tmo got the cliq vzw got the droid. It happens over and over
again. And just out of curiosity, have YOU been with tmo over 9 years with 5
phones on your account like I have? Because if not, you don’t even know
where I’m coming from. I think I deserve a little more than what they are
        providing.

        • Ali

And there is your problem…You’re so blind with hate and thinking that you’re owed something that you don’t care to open your eyes. In Q4 2010 TMO got the best devices, hands down.

We still don’t know what to expect from T-Mobile aside from the Cliq 2 and the LG G-Slate, but there are obviously going to be big phones coming out. If you’re so worried about switching to Verizon, then by all means, but writing a letter to T-Mobile on a non-T-Mobile website would be like me complaining to the president via the Pacific Ocean.

Odds are, they won’t hear anything ;)

    • NobleT-Mobile

Ummm…this is such a relative argument. As in relative to how you WANT to look at things, not necessarily how they really are. On the device front, the myTouch 4G and G2 are ahead of every phone in Verizon’s lineup today. For months now T-Mo has offered these handsets that have the most advanced processors for sale this minute, the myTouch 4G has 50% more RAM than anything they have offered, plus features like FFC. These are in no way second rate. You’re complaining about what we’re not getting based on T-Mo not making more device announcements this week. We have NO IDEA what’s coming so where do you get off being mad about T-Mo not offering something comparable to what Verizon isn’t even selling yet!!!!

On the network front, I will give you that they need to spread the 3G/4G footprint in STL to compete with say AT&T if you want to be able to say you have that at your house. Me? I have WiFi at home so I couldn’t care less what the network is where I live but when I head out, it’s in STL and I crush my friends who have Verizon on the Data front when we’re out. And don’t buy the hype on Big Red’s map either, both in the city and in South County I have had coverage where they haven’t. Not to say the opposite can’t happen too, but the point is it can go both ways. LTE is coming for them so they’ll get better as evidenced by there announcements but guess what! There’s more to come from T-Mo as well.

If you’re jealous of the big red map they put in their commercials or want them because their names on the amphitheatre then go right ahead and go, but as a St Louis native as well I’m staying put.

    • Briguydj32

blah blah blah. 40% of T-Mobile’s customers have been “loyal customers since voice stream”… so save the bull sh**…. Try going to WalMart and asking for a free gallon milk because you’ve shopped there for years. I’m so tired of people like you havent a sense of entitlement with their cell phone carrier. Get over it, or go somewhere else and bitch.

      • killthewhiners

seriously. no one gives a sh*t how long you been with t-mobile. I know t-mobile doesn’t care. The amount of money you have paid them in 10 years is what they make in a second. you’re money and loyalty is meaningless. The sooner people start getting that, the better. Secondly, the optimus 2x is actually alot better than the Black. Hello, worlds first dual core phone? the black is nice and all but not the 2x. Also, if u want a crappy iphone, then by all means switch to AT&T or Verizon. Whining like a spoiled lil b*tch on a tmobile blog aint gonna make that piece of sh*t iphone come to t-mobile. Do u know why? android rules on t-mobile. and anyone with a brain who has ever had android knows the iphone just doesnt compare. in fact, the iphone is laughable when paired against even the most stock android phone. so quit yer b*tchin or leave

By all means feel free to head on over to Verizon and pay a ridiculous $200 for a shitty iPhone 4 which is still not going to be 4G and if it does have 4G at Verizon it will be in limited areas and speed due to their network structure. And do you think verizon currently does have devices that provide full on 3G service EVERYWHERE there isnt such thing as a perfect network, or perfect provider or perfect phone. So consider moving your house to a place thats populated enough to have 4G towers everywhere like… say… MIAMI.

  • Tmo Matt

T-Mobile is getting Faster and Faster here in NYC…Love it.
Glad T-mo finally got up the balls to really compete.

Nooo one asked about completing a 3G overlay. This is a very serious question that needs answering. In Las Vegas (the city where CES is being held) if you go to the southwest part of town there is no 3G to be found.
Someone should have asked this simple question “when are you going to overlay all existing 2G towers in any given city with 3G” – because they haven’t yet.

    • Briguydj32

Why should they? For the amount of people they will be supplying 3G coverage to in rural areas, it’s not worth the investment to switch the existing towers. Most companies have a strong presence in urban areas and not so much in rural… it’s the nature of the business.

      • Anonymous

Since when is any part of Las Vegas rural?

        • Anonymous

Only the city itself is densely populated but much of the surrounding areas are vast stretches of low density desert and mountainous areas for hundreds of miles. This is Nevada we’re talking about.

      • Anonymous

Not quite true. Newer 3G and 4G technologies are much more efficient than older 2G technologies in terms of maintenance and upkeep. They also allow more simultaneous voice and data users than older 2G services.

Verizon will catch up to T-Mobile’s 200 million POPS covered with 4G this year. Verizon also gave a timeline of 2013 when their ENTIRE FREAKING NETWORK will be overlaid with 4G.

T-Mobile has spectrum nationwide but will not build it all out. They just sit on it. There are over 300 million POPS now here in the US. That means a large portion of T-Mo’s network will remain 2G and/or “SOS,” for a long time. Embarrassing that many users will keep experiencing GPRS in 2011.

  • Petey

I have a question for T-Mobile, Will T-Mobile be carrying the iPhone in the Q1?… or anytime soon within this year with T-Mobile 4G.

    • http://twitter.com/yr_uncle Mitch Carlson

(may I?) No. No iPhone. At this juncture, headed in the near term in CDMA format to Verizon.

    • icantphonesux

iphone? u mean that touchscreen thing made by apple that came out in 2007? why would ANYONE want that 4 years later? it was crap 4 years ago, still crap today.

      • Bobert

Ya LOL and its taken 2 years to catch a phone ON ONE FUCKIN NETWORK WITH 1 MODEL! Lets see what Apple does to Google now that it will be Verizon. You douchbag android fanboys are as bad as apple fanboys. You have no original thoughts of your own so all you can do is cry about the other.

As much as I like the Android OS, the iPhone is still the standard when it comes to who to beat. I used to work for Apple and was a total iPhone nut, but now I work for T-Mobile and love the Android. Having said that I know that having the iPhone would be a great revenue generator especially if we were to get it before Verizon. That doesn’t look to be the case now, but if we get it next it would still be a huge plus.

  • http://twitter.com/yr_uncle Mitch Carlson

Actually, I DO have a question! I spoke to a T-Mo this week (my usual monthly rant about their having sold me, a good customer, a Cliq in 12/09!) and, during the chat, the imminent demise of the, “Everything Plus” plan (no contract, unlimited data, texts) came up. It’s been talked about in this Forum before. The rep said he was unaware of any impending discontinuance. So, Taylor, what IS the deal these days?

  • http://twitter.com/SoSquidTaste Eric Chao

Not everyone can watch YouTube videos– or at least not with usable audio– in their office. Would it have killed you to sketch out even a rough outline of what sorts of content they covered in the Q&A? ;(

    • http://tmonews.com David

Honestly, considering the wifi issues I have been battling, rewatching the video would have taken me hours, I figured people would just want to watch anyway.

    • hi!

this is literally the dumbest comment I’ve ever read on any blog in my entire life. Wait till you get home to watch it you idiot. David has a life you know. Nice condescending tone as well.

any info on Sidekick Twist?? (and the foreign dude REALLY needs some subtitles!!)

There’s alot of ppl out there that are upset about the lack of device announcements. I would’ve preferred to see what tmo has in store for 2011 on the smartphone front, but they’ve never been the type to give much notice with upcoming devices. I’m sure there will be plenty of high-end hardware this year….Be patient

  • Really, no 4g

So we should all wait for real 4g support in at least 70% of the T Mobile market for how long? Granted, Sprint charging an extra 10 per month for non existent 3.5 3G is the most chicken __it thing a phone company could do, T Mo branding themselves the the best 4G (read 3.5) network without out charging more for the service is slight disingenuous too.

Start rolling out more great phones (no more windows phones please, blah), speed up the true 4g experience and treat you current customers as well as you new accounts. Do that and people, except for I phone dullards, will take notice.

  • nerdlust

Mobile World Congress is coming up soon. Also T-mobile line up is next level. mytouch4g, G2, vibrant, HD7, HD2 which can run windows and android, cliq2 plus more 4g phones for 2011

  • Bobert

Too bad no one had the balls to ask these clowns any real questions.
Thanks David I am glad this is the last article about such a sad event.

    • http://tmonews.com David

Oh Bobert, I have no idea why you are here sometimes.

      • BigMixxx

Really Though…NONE of those questions were really relevant. The concern was ’4g’….What about questions like ‘The device lineup is really starting to pick up, what’s next on the horizon in major devices’ Will T mobile sign an exclusive with ‘X’ or ‘Y’. LG and Dell seemed to have picked up on the T mobile Bandwangon. The network has improved tremendously, what are the true next steps. If I didn’t have to work I would have been there asking my questions! But Imma be there in the AM!

        • Anonymous

Look at it this way why on earth would t-mobile lay out all their cards on the table? they have to create some mystery. If they laid out their device plans it would only make it easier for other companies to top. I’d rather wait and what is to come supposedly around 24 devices will be releasing of course includes dell streak 7, Cliq 2, and G slate so far. The tablets aren’t too bad and I would definitely take the Cliq 2 over the shift 4G and not just because I’m on t-mo either.

        • BigMixxx

Why not? It’s not like apple, there is not secrets in the development cycles. Think of it this way. T mobile got the first Android device…and created a new user base. T mobile in turn got the first 4.3 inch monster phone and it created a wave of other monster phones….it’s not like it’s apple, really. No secrets as all manufacturers are selling to all carriers…Then in turn they are positioning special phone for particular carriers.
That shift 4g is not worth my time, neither is the cliq, according to my kid. G2 is the way to go, if your going down those lines…

I think you’re a coward and you won’t write that article prove me wrong. Why so sensitive david? my comment was it even directed at you but directed at the ass clown who run t mobile. who hurt you david?

        • http://tmonews.com David

Who is chicken? That’s an awfully bold statement considering you have no idea of my decision process as to what gets posted. Here is my dilemma regarding this, trying to determine whether or not an actual manufacturing defect exists. If I write about it and a problem doesn’t exist, all I have done is hurt sales of the device and caused those who do own the device to inquire as to replacements for their current devices and a whole slew of troubles begins both for the customer and T-Mobile. I just can’t write about something every time someone says there is a problem, I need to understand, verify and conclude something really exists. If that makes me chicken, so be it, I’ll deal with that.

You could always just ban him.

    • hi!

Exactly Bobert, thank you. I, like everyone else, is just going to bow our heads and forget this event ever took place. Verizon is going to announce the iPhone on the 11th which will come ON TOP of the amazing debuts they had at CES. And that’s coming from the nations number #1 company.

There’s a reason we’re number 4 and not going anywhere fast

      • Wilma Flintstone

actually, At&t is now 4th according to consumer report.

        • Really, no 4g

4th in customer service and maybe 4g market saturation. But that will change in a heart beat. And I bet Apple releases a 4g CDMA I Phone exclusively for Verizon to keep the sales up. T Mo will probably be still trying to role out a true 4g network.

        • Anonymous

T-mobile IS true 4G now ITU redefined 4G to include t-mobile’s type of network and ours supposedly is gonna go up to 630mbps or whatever it was within the next 3 or so years there was an article about it here. Stop your complaining. T-Mobile is still one of the fastest 4G providers AT&T doesn’t even compare. Everybody knows AT&T is last place in everything. Sprint doesn’t even have many great devices nor service. In reality T-Mobile in the least is in second place all round and only to Verizon because of their devices.

      • Anonymous

agreeded you are correct lets be honest everyone is awesome other then us att last to make a good push towards android now they are second to verizon not a bad spot considering they have a force of those .sprint has yet to go but i think they will have something then there is tmobile well we got tablets and a dual core phone thats going to every carrier horray we fail again the new thing 4.3 in screen andorid phones tmobile none thats poor by all means .

Without LTE on the iPhone how much amazing can it be? Especially if its the EXACT SAME IPHONE4! I still HIGHLY doubt the iPhone is gonna be announced for Verizon on tuesday I mean geez there isn’t even an FCC filing for it. Also why would apple release an iPhone this early in the year and then come out with an iPhone 5 or 4GS in the summer? iPhones had only been summer releases and AT&T still has 1 more year worth of exclusivity anyways. If anything Apple gets announced on tuesday its the iPad or iPad 2 thats it. I guarantee it is not the iPhone if it even is an apple related event. The details are so vague and based off of wishful thinking.

  • Jrg1392

I actually agree I thought this was pretty disappointing. I like the G-slate but at this point its not optional anymore as both Verizon and att already have the ipad. We don’t have any apple pruduct and I’m OK with Android being our main focus but I feel like that was a huge let down. It feels like att and Verizon have more upcoming android device launches. This is unacceptable and there is no reason for it.

I know to each their own but I think these upcoming android tablets will most certainly be better. I still prefer Windows 7 for tablets and pc’s though but who know maybe android will be a great hybrid between the two.

There is no need to have apple product anymore; the Android have become the standard. The speeds sounds great, I hope thy actually get a better coverage for the 4G.

the iphone appeals to the older crowd still. you wouldn’t believe how many people 45+ come in and ask what do i have that is like the iphone. Girls really like the iphone too.

      • pimpslappedya

my point exactly – old people like the iphone. old people think the iphone is still some one of a kind device. when in reality, its really quite dated already. im not saying its not a great device in its own right, but its not the “revolutionary” marvel crApple likes to claim it is.

      You are an idiot.

the iPhone would help boost up sales & gain #’s of subscribers for t-mobile. Once Verizon carries the iPhone, i’m sure it’s going to hurt T-mobile (going to lose a lot of subscribers who waiting to get the iphone).

Eventhough Android is a better OS than iOS (I’m currently using the vibrant), but the iPhone is the “must have” phone because it’s overhyped. Only phone geeks knows what’s better, but the regular consumers only wants whatever that’s popular and hyped up.

      • pimpslappedya

i dont think anyone has been waiting to get the iphone since it debuted 4 years ago. its already an extremely obsolete and limited device compared to Android(pick any android, guarantee it beats the snorefest known as the iphone. oh wow, its looks EXACTLY like my ipod but with a phone! derp a derp! who cares anymore? no one who matters.

  • Myg1

The biggest thing I don’t understand about TMobile is, the lack of femtocell or UMA devices. I LOVE my Nexus S, but coverage in NH is so spotting, it makes me missing my Incredible… :(

I really expected the TMobile keynote would have info on that… Screw the tablets, screw the fast speeds, get me coverage. :)

    • Eviltwin_52s

Why in the world would anyone want a Femtocell and have to use your own internet service and still pay the Wireless Carrier for the FemtoCell to put it into your home.. UMA is nice, but the handoff sucks and 95% of the time you lose signal with the handoff to wireless… this is why Tmobile is not pushing UMA. Besides just use your Nexus S and download the app that will do UMA and stop waiting for TMobile to put out a phone. :)

I kinda agree since coverage is the most important.

More than enough sites say otherwise. G2 and MT4G are considered top of the line. G2 has proven itself to be more powerful than anything Verizon has. What other device do you know got an overclock to 1.9ghz? Vibrant got up to 1.6ghz Mytouch4G is just simply amazing. Windows Phone 7 HD7 is simply amazing one of the best windows phones. So what if tmo got the cliq and Verizon got the droid? MT4G, G2, Vibrant, Nexus S, HD7 are not low tier. How on earth do you figure any of these are low tier? Verizon is always getting Droids with 4.3inch screens all of them look the same, at least at t-mobile we have variety. Verizons devices generally aren’t as powerful as ours. Sprint’s neither and definitely not AT&T’s. The Evo isn’t as powerful as the G2 or MT4G. The only things those other carrier devices have is screen size to fool you into thinking its better but I think everyone will agree that motoblur fucking sucks in comparison to any other UI. T-Mobile’s phones may not have as popular a name than Verizons line-up or Sprints Evo but T-Mobile’s phones outperform their devices and generally all round better and NOT low tier. The other companies are completely deceiving you in to thinking their turd sandwich is a butterball turkey from thanksgiving.

    • zed411

Good points, but T-Mobile is always missing the “cool” phones that non-T-Mobile people actually want. And as a Vibrant owner, I can say this: Hardware – top of the line; software – bottom of the barrel.

My Homie with the iPhone4, before I had the Nexus S made fun of my phone( I had the behold 2 before) is now envious of my Nexus S for the beautiful screen, quality material, the google maps and navigation, and in browser flash support :D he was a die hard iPhone4 fan until my phone. He still is an iPhone fan, I just don’t have to hear his shiit about his iPhone supposedly being better anymore lol

Lol. I like to here that. Im tired of people saying that the iphone is the best at everything.

All I care about is ..

Will Tmo get The LG Optimus 2X ..

TMO is always behind when it comes to phones .. ALWAYS

I live in a strong T-Mobile 4G area and my N1 and MyTouch 4G phones thank you. The new role out of the 4G+ network is very exciting. The combination of absolute fantastic speeds along with the best priced plans of any other carrier puts T-Mobile #1 with me. I would love to see T-Mobile grab the new Tegra powered phones like the new LG Optimus, these phones are the future. I know that I would be first in line to buy one, I don’t need another device right now but those new tegra powered devices are just too much to say no. Once a phone geek I guess always a phone geek.
    THANK YOU T-MOBILE
PS Get the new TEGRA POWERED DEVICES, customers will line up.

At least as far as devices, the show was a disappointment. I want a G Slate as soon as yesterday, but where were the phones? It looked like T-Mobile was turning things around as they ended last year with the G2, mytouch4g, and the Nexus S, but at this big event, at&t, who hadn’t even showed much concern for android previously, gets the Motorola Atrix, while we get….the Cliq 2. Verizon gets a handful of powerful devices as usual, and HTC was nowhere to be found. I REALLY like the Atrix, but there’s nothing I can do about that. The LG 2X sounds good, but I don’t like the design. It looks like the iphone; the bezel is too large and it isn’t very rounded on the edges. I’ll have to rely on leaks for the next couple months I guess. I would really like a new HTC phone.

Phones. People want phones. 4G speeds is great, but what happened to phones, you know, the thing people use everyday. With dual core handsets around the corner, it’s becoming the standard to have a 4″ screen and dual core with FFC too.

Hopefully there will be something at MWC. I still want that 5″ Dell Streak, but the rumored next gen Opus One. Sure Tmo has stepped up it’s game in network strength, but they have to also focus on phones too.

    • Anonymous

Well im not sure that dual core is a standard yet, but i think t-mobile has been stepping up their game.

  • Riopato

is it really possible to get celluar broadband that’s faster than my fibre optic broadband at home?

  • Althyer

my t-mobile blackberry just went blank, can someone help me. it will ring but even though i press the talk button it will not work

    • Tonytoca

Same thing happened to me. I had insurance and tmo replaced it for free.

The question at the end there about “if 21Mbps is marketed as 4G then what do you call 42Mbps” is a good one. Either the 4G moniker needs to be dropped across the board or the carriers are gonna rush to call their next in line speeds “5G”. And here we go again “what qualifies as 5G”???

ATT will call their 42Mbps HSPA+ “5G” while our 48 is just “Super 4G”. T-Mobile: “we should rebrand as ’6G’”

I hope that since the assault on the iPhone and ATT will be over that they will direct that same energy toward the cable companies. Comcast gives me like 16Mbps right now in my house but thats about to take a back seat to TMO’s 21Mbps HSPA+ on my phone.

  • Anonymous

I should note that the 16Mbps is on the lower more affordable end and of course there are faster options but the prices of tmo and comcast in this range is comparable. Also TMO has a huge plus since I could take those data speeds outside of my house.

  • Bob

T-Mobile just charged me $200, for closing down my account “early”. Even though I have proof that this is not the case, we are past the 2 year mark, they insist. When I called to talk to a representative I got the run around, and when I asked for a supervisor, he was “in a meeting”. I was promised a phone call back, but nobody called. This is what I suspect a very shady business practice, used all the time. NEVER AGAIN!
    T-MOBILE SUCKS!
