T-Mobile Preparing For Major Sale February 11th-12th

It looks like T-Mobile is ready to put the pedal to the metal metaphorically speaking by starting off the year with another huge retail promotion. For those of you who remember the Father’s Day promotion held last year, T-Mobile acquired  just over 100k new customers that day. They clearly have similar expectations this year as the above image states “…it is expected to be similar to the first half of the Father’s Day promotion.”

So we have beefed up schedules for the retail stores, tickets for holding your place in line, sign in sheets and order forms? Yup, that sounds exactly like the Father’s Day sale. The great news is we are also hearing that existing customers will definitely be able to take part in this deal, though you’d likely have to be upgrade eligible to take part. We’re digging to find out just what exactly this could be, but whatever it is we hope it’s going to give T-Mobile the exact kind of momentum they hoped to find after todays investor call.

Hi. My gf wants a smart phone that: 1. Has Android. 2. Can do wifi calling via Kineto app OR UMA. 3. Has a keyboard. 4. Will work with squareup to accept credit card transactions. Those four things are her musts. If she can’t get them in a phone from t-mobile, she’s switching services. Can anyone tell me if any t-mobile phones currently have those four things? Because I really can’t tell.

      Uhm G2?

      1. T-mobile has more android devices than any other us carrier.
      2. T-mobile is the only us carrier that supports wifi calling
      3. t-mobile has the G2, mytouch slide, moto charm, and cliq 2 all with a keyboard
      4. squareup works with any android device.

Do the G2 or the Cliq2.

      • http://twitter.com/stevensteve steven

Avoid the Cliq like the plague. It should be relabeled as a STD because the previous Cliq iterations were so bad.

        Get G2, definitely

        • reddragon

the Cliq was not a bad phone. upgrading it to 2.1 was a mistake however the original version of the device did everything a mid range device is supposed to do. it was never built as a super-phone, stop trying to make it what is never was. it was sold as an awesome messaging center for social junkies.. not a gaming device, super camera, or remote control. just a really pretty two-way pager.

        • Anonymous

completely different device and yet its treated like its the same. I bet it turns out to be a perfectly good phone.

        • Anonymous

No, the Cliq really was a bad phone, in that it wasn’t priced like, nor marketed as, a big Sidekick for social media fans.It was sold as a smartphone with social media skills added, and as a smartphone it was sorely lacking.

Further, it was priced at $199 with 2-year contract, just like a real smartphone. Had it cost only $50 like a Comet or Optimus, the story told by former owners about the phone in Jan of 2011 would be a lot more affectionate.

Finally, Blur was a mess. It added too much overhead to the phone’s normal operations, and (as we now know) kept it from being upgraded from its original Cupcake (!!!) to Donut in a timely manner (which would at minimum have added the functionality of Google Nav), and after many broken promised deadlines gave Eclair to the Cliq owners, months after Froyo was the current OS.

Better to just stick with the G2, which doesn’t carry the overhead of a skin like Blur and figures to have the muscle to do the work the woman wants the phone to do.

        • Smylax

The CLIQ2 is an entirely different beast from the original. The original CLIQ was Motorola’s very first Android device, you don’t think they’ve improved since then? Give me a break. The CLIQ boasts very competitive hardware, and the software is IDENTICAL to what the Droid 2 is running, and that has worked out pretty damn nicely for Verizon. Please know what you are talking about before you start slamming a phone. It has double the resolution of the original, a fast 1Ghz processor, and Android 2.2 with Moto Blur, which Motorola has made HUGE improvements to since the original version. It will be a great device for very many people.

        • Anonymous

If you had owned a Cliq, then you’d have some compassion for Steven’s concerns.

In my case, it is deeds, not words: I don’t care what Moto is churning out with the Cliq name on it at this point, since my family was ensnared in the original Cliq and the ineptitude with which Moto handled the paying customers for its phones–and in our case, we paid the full price as Even More Plus customers–doesn’t inspire one of those customers to provide a complimentary reference.

I would hope that the company would have learned from its mistakes, but when the book is closed on the original Cliq and Cliq XT there will still be users who will never have an opportunity to upgrade from Cupcake because Moto’s software engineers couldn’t make an upgrade which wouldn’t break the phone or piss off the carrier. And don’t even bother with the “they could root their phones” because if the customer has to do all the heavy lifting, then the manufacturer isn’t doing its job. Besides, Blur was one of the selling points of the Cliq, so why should a person root the phone and remove Blur (aside from making it work properly for the first time, of course)?

What transpired globally with the Cliq, Dext and all other variants is a corporate embarrassment, and Motorola will have to show a lot more improvement before survivors of their Cliq products line up to buy their new phones, or even recommend them to others.

Aside from that, the keyboard on the Cliq 2 is one seriously fugly mess.

Regarding: “4. squareup works with any android device.” …
THAT would make it easier … but are you sure? Squareup.com has a device list:

        *
        Apple iOS
        o iPhone
        o iPad
        o iPod touch (2G+)

        Android OS
o Motorola DROID and DROID X
o HTC Nexus One, Droid Incredible, Evo, Desire, and Hero (with Android 2.x update)
o Samsung Galaxy S series, Intercept
        o LG Ally
        o Dell Streak

I originally thought any Android device was fine, too. But when I wanted to be sure, I kept checking. And ran into that list.

I already upgraded last month, so whatever this deal is, I hope it’s not TOO good to make me regret my upgrade, haha.

And does anybody think it interesting that T-Mo has scheduled this sale event the same weekend that Verizon launches its new iPhone? Will this work as “counter-programming” to combat Verizon that weekend? Or would T-Mo be better off doing it the weekend before to prevent an exodus of customers?

    • darron

for people that are intending to get the iphone, they’ve already set their minds to it. I like the fact that they are using this to compete with it’s release that weekend to give people a choice. A free phone gives people the chance to see how much better of a deal TMobile is in regards to rate plans vs. the Death Star.

      • http://twitter.com/VDubb722 Vic Webb

Well, value varies from customer to customer. So while TMO might be a better deal for you, for someone else, it could be a pretty crappy one.

    • hi!

that’s easy…I’m take this one…the answer, of course, is no

    • Insanedifter785

I wish tmo would just get the Optimus 2x already so I can upgrade so tired of waiting. And to answer your question the only way they can counter verizon that weekend is if the 2x drops.I have actually been thinking of going to verizon since the retail peeps want to give me the run around on my upgrade last week.

  • Steve

I would love to see the G-Slate come out at this time. What I’ve seen on the Optimus 2x is somewhere between late Feb-sometime in March. I would LOVE to see it out before 3/17, but as long as we get it I’ll be happy

  • Anonymous

Its to clear some inventory before they announce the release date of the Vibrant 4G and Sidekick 4G during mobile world congress which is ironically starting on Feb 13th.

    • Mopar6464

That and they want to clear everything out for the iphone after it’s released in June with AWS.

  • jake

Sorry tmo, gonna use my upgrade for the optumis 2x. Gotta love that tegra 2!

    • Enough Already TMO

Agreed, I hate to be one of the ppl that doesn’t care about these type of events

Please tmo just announce the optimus 2x, the coverage is great in my area so I really don’t want to go to any other carrier, all I ask is a top notch phone to go with it

    Bring the optimus 2x

    • sanjath

I know everyone wants the new and shiny phone (including myself), but if TMOs goal is to get new customers they need to show some creativeness in their data plan rates, they cannot compete with iphone4 on verizon and they have already conceded that they want to target the value minded customers. The $10 data plans that they are dangling is a sham. They should offer more like a family dataplan where you share the data or shared dataplan between your mobile devices (like you can buy a dataplan that can be used on your laptop and slates without really costing like 2x the data plan price or 3x the price!)

MyTouch 4G. The Vibrant has a busted gps.

      • Manusferrera

i would say the vibrant 4g especially if you get into rooting your phone and putting custom roms you will never look back

  • Mr. V

I’ve been sitting on my upgrade for a while, trying to put off adding another 10 to 30 dollars to my bill (for data) and waiting for a device that is basically a G2 with FFC. I know FFC was kind of a joke here before, but now that my brother has Qik videocalling I see it’s potential (my family is spread around everywhere and video skype on PC is the standard, with Qik in our phones it would make things easier). I’ve also been playing with his swype and I just feel I still need QWERTY. I don’t mind if the phone is bulkier. But the biggest feature I need… I gave my G1 to my GF and have been using a Samsung T369 (slider), an the battery lasts for 7 days, with use. I had forgotten how long dumb phones that aren’t sucking down juice for 1Ghz processors can last! So a smartphone with a longer battery life is my new bar.

    • MIKEEEEE

      mr. v,

take a DEFY for a test spin.

      surprisingly great battery life.

    • yyevo

It has less to do with the processor and more to do with the big giant screen. The screen takes power to display, the backlight drains even more and even the touch ability takes power to run.

The radios, too. 3G/4G, edge, wifi, and gps all running at once suck the juice, too.

The processor doesn’t run at it’s full power all the time, just as needed. So it’s the least of your worries.

But yes, smartphones in general are thirsty beasts.

  • Brianaz24

        • Rhumbaclave

I just got off the phone with loyalty. I was out of contract on two lines. I got two MT4G’s at $40 each on a 1 year contract. To me the 1 year contract is better then free phone on a two year. I could sell then in 1 year plus get upgrade pricing in 11 months!

          Any rebate involve?

Just ordered a G2 yesterday. I wasn’t fully upgrade eligible, but still was able to get it for $50 (+tax, shipping, and upgrade fee). I hope I don’t regret the buy, because what I REALLY wanted was a MT4G. I didn’t think I’d be getting that for free anytime soon, though, especially not being fully eligible until August.

from what I have gathered, (even though I am not David) the 2X does in fact have AWS bands which as we all know is a sure sign its tmobile bound

I’ve received far to many emails from reps who are being told by their LG people along with two other sources who have confirmed it is listed on the T-Mobile roadmap. I’m still skeptical till i see one of those screenshots but it’s come from enough people that makes me convinced that it’s legit.

I am hopeful that the 2X is coming to Tmo. Another thing that gives me some comfort is price point. Vzw is reportedly bringing in the Thunderbolt @ $250 on contract. All other duo-cores will have to be competitive. Then, there is the Tmo announcement about their desire to bring down the prices of Smartphones… Meaning that the 2X should be doable!!! – The only thing that gives me pause is that last year, I was just as hopeful about the HTC Desire HD coming to us and it never did. The Thunderbolt is its equivalent, the EVO is a dummied down version of it…and look how long it took to get those here since the Desire HD was dropped.

I must say, I don’t understand Tmo’s logic. What’s the big secret??? If the 2X is coming, say so plainly so that we can prepare to get this phone. Why entice us to waste an upgrade to go into a G2 or an MT4G under contract, if we can have the 2x instead??? And I guess we should also remember that Tmo is supposed to drop 24 new units on the market this year…On the bright side, no one else has claimed the 2X (2 of the Big 3 have named their dual core entries – Atrix – ATT, Thunderbolt – VZW)

Major sale of what 2-11 and 2-12? The Vibrant 4G is coming 2-23. No info about the Optimus 2x. I don’t think T Mobile customers are going to go crazy over the G slate. They already gave away the G2 for free. Are they going to give away the MyTouch 4G for free?

My 2 lines are up now. I can wait to Feb, but I want to replace my G1 and my wife’s Curve. Not interested in the Vibrant and the GPS issue, I could live with a G2 or Nexus S, but the Vibrant 4G or Optimus 2x are the hoit phones. My wife will have to learn an onscreen keyboard or go to a thicker phone, and she’s already whining, but is tired of RIM browsers. So what do I do? G2 and MT4G? ps – I like a real keyboard too… typing in passwords onscreen is a pain.

    • http://graflex.org/klotz/ klotz

You and me both! I hope they have some 5-row keyboards with Android and no moto-blur or sense.

In my opinion you should go with teh G2 and MT4G if the sale is really good those days. Both phones are excellent. You could wait for the latest and greatest but none of these new phones are going to be that much of a bump up from G2 and MT4G, regardless of what the hopefuls say on here.

I can’t imagine that the deal will be anything like the Father’s Day promotion. I guess they can probably do all smartphones free, BOGO, or something similar; however, Deutsche Telekom wants revenues to increase with TMO USA and giving away the world is not going to do that (as indicated by last years performance with the Father’s Day promo).

  • Sam

If I remember correctly, the father’s day promotion preceded the release of a superphone (Samsung Galaxy S, I believe?). This one precedes the release of the LG Optimus 2X in March. In other words, getting all the underpowered superphone wannabes (Mytouch line and HTC HD2 last year) off the shelves to make room for a real phone. That’s why I skipped the FD sale last year and will probably skip that one. I’m gonna hold out for the LG 2X to switch back to Tmo.

  • Really, no 4g

So the consensus seems to be that TMO is gonna clear the current stock (on unknowing newbies and re-uppers) prior to putting out a better phone. Boy, way to go TMO in your efforts to keep customers happy (if this is the case).

I’m already dead set against Samsung (using a Keis to update android instead of OTA) as I hear they will do similar things to make me update all my EPICs at work.

I am sure HTC is scrambling to match the new LG 2x too, so magenta better be ready to knock my socks off for this deal.

these 2 year contracts wouldnt be a problem if tmobile would include the EXSISTING constumers in these GREAT DEALS!! you change your plan, you loose your upgrades, not fair at all!!

I’d like to see tmobile do MORE for LONG TIME customers.

    • http://twitter.com/Plouis1988 Patrick Pierre-louis

Changing your plan does not take away your upgrades. You remain eligible as long as you haven’t actually upgraded. Changing your plan only renews the contract and that is only if you choose a promo plan.

    • Chilisweet

In some markets they are testing something called better than new pricing for existing customers who are eligible for upgrades. This btn pricing ranges from 25% to 35% off the full discount pricing, therefore rewarding our long term customers. So you might want to ask your sales rep if your market is part of the pilot mkt and then if you qualify.

The deal does always include existing customers you just have to be fully eligible to upgrade which is typically after 22 months of your 24 month contract. When you change your plan it does not affect your upgrade status for a new phone it just extends the contract for the rate plan and all lines on your account. This doesn’t take away from your upgrade though as it remains the same until you buy a new phone with the full discount.
