T-Mobile G2 Free On T-Mobile.com

Oh, how we love a good deal and this one comes courtesy of T-Mobile.com with the T-Mobile G2 going for the low low price of…free! Of course, this requires a new 2-year commitment. Sounds like a good deal if you ask me and it isn’t Samsung so that alone might be enough to entice a few of you!

Got mine in Dec when they were offering this to the loyalty customers. Nice little upgrade from my Nexus One. Love the internal 2GB with my 32GB microSD and HSPA+.

I just called customer service to see if i can return my g2 that i ordered on Dec18and get a G2 for free. I’m out of luck my buyers remorse ended. I was told my one representative that i was still under the buyers remorse but was not eligible for the upgrade, so i hung up. Called back 15min later and was told that my buyers remorse ended. 14 day buyers remorse for upgrades, 20 day remorse for new customers. If i only waited a little bit longer before upgrading. Enjoy the phone guys, its great.

I had called last week to complain about my HD2 and the rep was very rude and wanted me to pay a fee to upgrade to another phone at cost. I placed a cancellation on all my lines for the 24th. I saw this and called them this morning and they gave me the phone for free. That’s all I wanted. thanks customer care. I will be continuing with tmobile now. Thanks tmonews for this info it was very helpful.

        • Laurencez19

I love my girlfriend’s hd2. Granted I have android 2.2 running with sense ui on it, but Its a great piece of hardware. Are you looking to sell yours?

  • Thereugo67

Have had the G2 for about a month great phone. T-Mobile does need to power up the service all over. Was in Disneyland on Sat and the service was speedy. Near my house in that area okay. Waiting on the Update. Can’t go wrong with phone.

Watch out for the yellowish screen been having this problem ever since I got the phone. All of the replacement that I receive are all the same screen ima bout to get my 7th replacement .

    • J-Hop2o6

yea the whites are really warm.. ESPECIALLY next to my last phone (TP2) which had powder white whites.. seen it on other G2′s also.. i’ll just deal with it until my next phone.. im still due for an upgrade.

    • bmg314

Funny, mine has been fine. No issues whatsoever, and Ive compared it to an Epic 4G, an HD7, G1, and an iphone4. There has to be some factor involved that is causing you to have these issues and me not to.

      • J-Hop2o6

I hope they still have this deal when my contract expires in 2 months…

    • yezz2007

Even though my contract does not expire until September 2011, I am able to upgrade to this phone for Free (after $50 mail in rebate) online.

      • DrMonkey

        How so?

        • yezz2007

When I login to my.t-mobile.com and go to upgrade (under ‘Phones and Devices’) it shows the cost of each device if I upgrade my line. For example, it shows the G2 Free and MyTouch Slide $99.99. It seems that T-Mobile is letting customers that have more than 12 months since their last upgrade to get the full subsidized price.

        • http://twitter.com/shilo101 shilo101

I was surprised to notice the same thing when I checked on upgrading for my daughter.

          Classy move, Tmo.

        • MCBrian

Yep, me too! Won’t be 2-years until Sept 2011 — also on a TP2 — but my upgrade list shows G2 free (after $50 MIR)…and I ordered one this afternoon!

Solid phone. I’ve had mind since the day it came out. Have had 0 problems and it does everything I need it to do. Can’t go wrong with the price of free either.

If a longtime out of contract tmo customer(currently without a smartphone) gets the G2, signs up for 2 year contract, adds a basic data plan as required…
Does the tmo customer have to update their voiceplan or can they keep it all the same and just add data?

Only have one more day to decide if I want to do the BOGO for a MYT4G or now this…

    • Antbankz23

you do know for the bogo free phone you have to open a new line/account for that phone which means 2 new 2yr contracts unless u have 2 lines already and there both eligable for full upgrade then u just pay the taxes and upgrade fee.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1055236506 Jason Choi

I truly lucked out. I went to upgrade my phone from the website but it kept giving me an error so I called 611 and asked them to do it for me. They went through the process and also kept getting the error. While they put me on hold to look for this problem, I checked my credit card account to see that I had insufficient funds. What I did not know was that I was talking to one of the supervisors. He was able to hook me up without the hassle of mail-in rebate. (All I had to pay was the upgrade fee and shipping charges which was all going to be billed to my account). He also did not lock me with the 2 year data plan because of “the error on their part” (HA!)

  • Mark

Bought 2 G2′s on Dec31, saw this called. Sending me 2 brand new ones free since still in the grace period. Told me to take other ones back to TMO store for refund. Win.

    • Edna

Good for you Mark we also upgraded and paid extra for 2 phones before our 14 days to return was up as a matter of fact had them for only about 4 days found out about the free phones and they would not let us get them and return the purchased phones we were told that, that promotion was gone off when we knew of people who had gotten the phones on that day. T-mobiles nothing but a rip off

So how does a long time Tmo customer out of contract, get the same deal as a new tmo customer? Why should I as a longtime Tmo customer be the one that has to pay an upgrade fee? Guess that is Tmos thanks to their longtime customers…

    • beastly

I didn’t confirm this for myself, but I talked to someone who was eligible for an upgrade, and he said that when he signed onto his account online, he saw the G2 for free for him too. It wasn’t available when he called in, so it looks like a web-only promotion.

      • E20mo

It is a web only promotion. I had issues getting their website to work and when I called customer care they wanted to charge almost $200 for it. After that call and a discussion with online customer support whatever the issue was finally cleared *itself* up since TMO did NOTHING to help me after contacting customer care twice about the problem. If you want to see a frustrating web chat transcript let me know…

        • Rld752

If you have been with tmo for awhile, just ask for the customer loyalty dept. I have been with tmo for about 8 years and as soon as I mentioned the promotion, I had no issues! Friendly rep said that I can get the phone for free AND get it in 3 days for free expedited shipping!

What are all the current data plans that are available to add to a G2 for those currently without a smartphone, on a good grandfathered voiceplan?

Also do you have to pay extra for the Wifi calling feature on G2? Or can I get that included?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1055236506 Jason Choi

I remember seeing that the 200mb (?) was 15$ and the unlimited data was 30$. and im pretty sure wifi calling is free.

    • Nooo

When i upgraded to my G2 back on December18th i was offered unlimited web for $20. The name of the plan is called Preferred Android Unlimited Web. Wifi Calling app is installed on the G2, but you still use network minutes. From what i understand the whole point of Wifi calling is to use you wireless network as a signal if T-Mobiles signal is weak .

      • claysu

Was this online or on the phone?

        • Nooo

i did the upgrade over the phone and i was offered the preferred web for $20.

        • Meagan

How long ago did you get your mobile setup with Preferred Web for $20?

Anyone know if $20 Preferred Web is still available? Is it unlimited?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Q3HBMAZJGIQNRBDCEGCEXRYA3M Matty Moss

I just got off the phone a few hours ago and I was upgrade eligible.. the key is when you call the IVR you say CONTRACT! That way you get someone in retention. This whole department is setup to make sure you are happy and they are able to offer goodies like no upgrade fee etc.. I got my new g2 ordered for free with no mail in rebate then the agent asked me about shipping options and i was like um i dont have my debit card handy which was the truth and he was like well we will just waive the shipping BONUS!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Q3HBMAZJGIQNRBDCEGCEXRYA3M Matty Moss

Also the wifi calling does not use your minutes up. It just lacks the ability to transfer from wifi to regular cell tower which results in a dropped call. I have a friend who has a G2 and had the same question about his phone and he found that out and was like oh okay cool. P.S. it is free on the G2 because of the not transferring to cell towers.

    • beastly

That’s not generally true. The only people who can make calls over wifi without it using their minutes are people with the grandfathered unlimited hotspot calling feature on their account. For the rest of us, it uses minutes just the same.

    • android fan

Wonder why tmo webite states WiFi calling may be extra on their G2 features?

  • trife

For anyone buying this device mainly for the WiFi calling, be cautioned. Many people have had MAJOR issues with the WiFi calling app, myself included. Basically it was working brilliantly fine and then it just crapped out. Now its basically useless–try to make a call with the app on and it won’t even ring. Try to answer a call with WiFi calling on and you can’t. SUCKS big time b/c I really need this service, as I live somewhat off the beaten path.

Oh yeah–and customer care is useless regarding this issue. They offer no help whatsoever and have no solution. Basically I’m just SOL.

    • beastly

Insist on talking to tech support. If it worked well at one time (and still works well on my phone) then it can be made to work well again. You shouldn’t have to deal with one of the features not working, especially since that was one of the reasons you got the phone. The first thing I’d do is clear the application data: from the home screen, press MENU, then select SETTINGS, then select APPLICATIONS, then select MANAGE APPLICATIONS, select ALL to display all applications, and then tap the CLEAR DATA onscreen button to clear the application data. (If it’ll let you, also select CLEAR CACHE.)

That will probably get it taken care of. If not, call 1-800-937-8997 from a different line, and make sure you have your home wifi network and G2 handy for troubleshooting. I work in tech support, and my motto is “Everything is fixable.” Good luck!

    • beastly

PS- I should mention, when calling tech support, the only word you need to tell the automated system is “blackberry.” That will direct your call to tech support, and bypass general customer care, who are more familiar with billing and account issues than technical issues.

I’m in a no-contract plan for this reason. But T-Mobile has eliminated them now.

I was just in a Tmo store yesterday. Look for the brochures with the Maroon/White stock card titled,
        “T-Mobile Even More Plus

No annual contract plans ARE still available.

Yeah as am I. I thought about going in on the BOGO deal over thanksgiving and it wasn’t even worth it for me to upgrade to 2 G2s from the 2 G1s that are under our plan. as it is right now, we pay about 160 a month total with taxes and everything. to “upgrade” to a new phone, the plan they were trying to force on us would’ve been over $200 a month. ridiculous.

I don’t like they keyboard of the G2… the keys are way too spaced out and the hinge is annoying to lift everytime you want to use the keyboard. I wanted a G2 so bad until I tried it out in the store.

  • Creativebluedot

Unfair. I wanted the G2 but I got the T-mobile Optimus T for free instead. :(

    • Meagan

If you are within the return dates, return it. Not unfair. No carrier will stop creating new offers because you purchase a mobile…

  • Meagan

Can anyone confirm that it is possible to keep grandfathered plans (via retention/loyalty dept) if you add a feature, such as data/net?

    • Iamdanwilliamson

Yes, I currently have the old $20 blackberry unlimited data plan, I asked if my Android data plan could be the same and they said yes.. they would allow me to keep my grandfathered feature and it will be $20 for the new Android unlimited plan .

  • Librik

    500 min+unlimited voice&data without contract = $60/mo, G2 $499
same plan with a contract = $80/mo, G2 free but $18 upgrade fee.
    Savings over two years w/o contract = $20 x 24 = $480 plus that upgrade fee $18= $498.
Exactly the price of the phone. Bottom line: if you need credit, this is a good deal (works out 0%). If you can pay for the phone upfront, there is no reasonn to get into a contract

    • Antbankz23

thats make sense but like most people my cell phone is my main phone, doesnt make sense to have a house phone now adays so 500 min would not cutt it for %95 percent of people,so i rather pay $70(which i pay a month) and get unlim mins, data,& texts. . . .that makes more sense, and yes i just got the phone for free.

      • Librik

Look, the bottomline is that the difference between any plan with contract and same plan without is $20, so it works out the same. By the way, how come you pay $70 for all that? The website gives me $100 for unlim mins, data & text. Perhaps i should complain :)
BTW, I have my cell as my home phone and barely talk for 200 min a month. You, like, have a job that requires you to talk a lot on the phone?

My wife’s contract expired last year and she got everything completely free when I called 611. I still have 6 months left on my contract, but I was able to order it from the website successfully. Had to pay the tax, shipping and upgrade fee though. Has anyone had problems ordering this online? I’ve filled out the form, but when I click Submit”, the web page just hangs there. I can click “Back” to change my info, but “Submit” does nothing.

how is it free but still cost around $400? you just pay the taxes of the full priced phone,5.99 for ups ground shipping and a upgade/activation fee, was like $50-60 dollars after all that but sure beats paying the 200 more it was a couple days ago and again on jan 20th with a new 2yr contract
