T-Mobile to Deliver Fastest Smartphone

Running on America’s Largest 4G Network

Galaxy S 4G Offers Rich Entertainment Experience at Lightning-Fast Speeds

BELLEVUE, Wash., and DALLAS — Jan. 20, 2011 —T-Mobile USA, Inc. and Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile), the No. 1 mobile phone provider in the U.S.1, today revealed the Galaxy S™ 4G, exclusively from T-Mobile.

According to T-Mobile, the Galaxy S 4G will be the fastest smartphone running on America’s Largest 4G Network™. Powered by Android™ 2.2 (Froyo), the Galaxy S 4G is  T-Mobile’s first smartphone capable of delivering theoretical peak download speeds of up to 21 Mbps, delivering rich entertainment experiences at even faster speeds through its brilliant Super AMOLED touch screen display.

T-Mobile’s 4G network, America’s largest 4G network, is currently available in 100 major metropolitan areas, reaching approximately 200 million people nationwide. With aggressive plans to expand and double the speed of its 4G network in 2011, T-Mobile expects that 140 million Americans in 25 major metropolitan areas will have access to these increased 4G speeds by midyear.

“With Galaxy S 4G, T-Mobile will deliver its fastest smartphone yet on America’s largest 4G network, providing rich entertainment virtually whenever and wherever consumers want,” said Cole Brodman, chief marketing officer, T-Mobile USA.  “And with 4G data plans from $10 per month, we’re making blazing-fast 4G speeds and super smartphone experiences easily accessible to the millions who crave them.”

More information on the Galaxy S 4G from T-Mobile will be available in the coming weeks.

T-Mobile’s HSPA+ 4G network  not available everywhere.  See coverage details at T-Mobile.com. 4G used in connection with the Galaxy S™ 4G product name refers to the fact that the Galaxy S™ 4G is designed with HSPA+ technology.

man it’s awesome to have the SK4G confirmed but we need pics/specs ASAP.

I’m really hoping for a high end semi stock android device and i really hope it has some form of the side lighting. i always loved that. tegra2 would be nice, but kinda doubtful. i could live without that though as long as it’s the same specs as the nexus one or higher, and for the love of god have at least 1GB internal for apps.

    • Walt8181

I see you set your standards really low. 1gb for apps? Seriously? That’s a joke. Download a few high end games and thats the end of that.

As for the SK4g and Vibrant4G….not bad but where’s the high end phones at? Don’t tell me the Vibrant, MT4G and G2 is it because thats all a joke. How does T-Mo expect to move up to number 3 when subpar phones like this.

Now before you start hating on me, I’ve had the Vibrant and currently have a G2 and let me tell you, 4G speeds sounds good on paper but it does nothing in the real world. I have yet to see 4G like speeds on the G2. The freaking Vibrant had an average of 5Mb. My G2 barely breaks 3Mb and the only time I seen it reach 7Mb was when I was on the highway. Seriously, on the highway? BS. They need better ways to implement it because come this time next month, I’ll be on Verizon and thats a fact.

To reiterate, this is my 2nd G2 and both have slow data. I don’t think its the phone but the network itself. I have to be on Wifi at home because i peak out at like 700k. Thats pathetic. My internet was down the past few days and I thought I was going to die waiting for all the stuff to load up on my G2.

I agree, according to tmo’s map I live in an excellent 3g+ coverage area but speeds don’t even reach as advertised. 3g is spotty and if my girlfriend has her g2 going we are competing for signal really wtf…. and if I ‘m using my phone near a ATT or Verizon customer I lose data connection. At this point I’m ready to pay more and switch.

      • I heard getting a new sim card with your new purchase helps with the speed problems; if you haven’t already done that.

1GB for the /data partition is just fine. obviously more is better but the apks still have a max size of only 50MB hence why games such as nova, dungeon hunters, and others install their game data to the SD card.

So 1GB is just fine for the data partition. The Nexus S, Galaxy S, and G2 phones all have 1-3GB of storage for apps, and i have never ever seen someone complain about that. Especially since all the first android phones barely had over 250MB for apps. 1GB is not a joke at all if you actually understand how android works.

The Vibrant G2 and MT4G are all high end phones. The Vibrant is not 4g and can only get up to 7.2Mbps, the other two can get to 14Mbps, but even then you have to have a damn near perfect connection and it’s only in a few cities. On my Nexus One in orlando a few weeks ago i was getting 5-6Mbps down constantly but now that i’m back in broward county, south florida, i get between .3-2.0Mbps.

Feel free to jump to verizon, but t-mobile will be the faster network for the next few years. if your getting slow data on your G2, then you need to either get a new sim, or there could be an issue with t-mobile in your area. I know there was a data slow down in fort lauderdale the other day, normally it’s 2Mbps down there, i was lucky if i get over .2

      • :::CLEARS THROAT:: JUST HOW DID U GET 5MB ON YOUR NON HSPA+ VIBRANT DEAR?

Hate to poo-poo on the parade, but, I wouldn’t be surprised if the new Sidekick 4G looks like a kiddie piece of junk like the MyTouch 4G. It will probably have that crappy UI as well. **SIGH** Come on T-Mobile, bring us a quality phone, please!

I will never buy another Samsung product so I am not interested in the Vibrant 4G. I am not a teenager so the Sidekick does not interest me. Dell Streak 7 is already outdated so no thanks. But I might brake my piggy bank for the LG G-Slate and or the LG Optimus 2X!

I work for t-mobile and i was at an event yesterday in New Jersey where we met with Phillip Humm and the rest of the leadership team. The Chief Technology Officer is currently using the Sidekick 4G. It runs Android 2.2 and is built by SAMSUNG. It was certainly a sexy device, but it didn’t utilize the SuperAmoled display that we’ve come to know from the Vibrant. Both the Vibrant 4G and the Sidekick 4G will utilize the 21mbps HSPA+ chip (technically faster than whats in the Mytouch and the G2). As far as David’s “4G and LTE” article written earlier, T-Mobile has NO PLANS of moving to LTE and in fact we were shown a slide with HSPA+ speeds beyond 500mbps within a 5 year time frame. The reason behind it is just like CDMA before it, there isn’t much Global support for LTE (about 12 countries), where as HSPA+ is already in a 100.

The article on PC Mag states that the phone is a “Samsung Galaxy S 4G.” They didn’t call it the “Samsung Vibrant 4G.” Does this mean that it is a different Galaxy S phone or did they decide to not call the “Vibrant 4G” by that name and that they haven’t decided on a proper name so they generically called it the “Samsung Galaxy S 4G?” Can anyone clarify? I don’t think you are understanding what I’m saying PimpStrong. Samsung Galaxy S is the BRAND for all of the Galaxy S devices that are carried on multiple carriers. The T-Mobile Vibrant is a MODEL of the Galaxy S much like AT&T’s version, the Captivate, Sprint’s Epic 4G & Verizon’s Fascinate & even U.S. Cellular’s, Mesmerize. The PC Mag article didn’t differentiate. Get it? :)

I know what you mean. I have a Samsung Vibrant which on the box says is “A Galaxy S phone” and therefore TMO maybe be referring to it in the general term of Galaxy S 4G. It’s possible like you said they could drop the name Vibrant and just call it a Galaxy S 4G but its doubtful. I mean we’ve already seen pictures and TMO documentation of the Samsung Vibrant 4G

Sometimes when someone asks what phone I have I’ll either say the vibrant or I’ll say its the Galaxy S.

Is it too hard to ask for an adult phone that with a 4.3 inch screen, HSPA+ and Android 2.2 or higher? Who still uses a sidekick these days anyways? I have never had any problems with TMobiles service but, I am starting to have issues with the phone selection. TMobile messed up by getting in bed with Samsung. If the LG optimus 2x or an HTC Desire HD, EVO, Thunderbolt, Inspire type phone isn’t coming down the line here soon I am gone. Please for the sake of staying alive put out an ADULT phone. Not a teeny bopper myTouch or sidekick.

    • Tbonezx11

You do know there’s a fully-functional port of Froyo for the HD2, which is essentially the EVO in specs?

      Just making sure.

However I do agree…I’d love to see the next-gen HTC 4.3″ beastie on TMo with native Android 2.2+ – 1080p, 8mp cam, VGA FFC, Dual-core tegra, 1Gig RAM, MicroSD, HDMI & Super AMOLED Screen … what have I forgotten in my specs? :)

Bring it on HTC! We know you can do it!

      • 12 mpx camera. the Evo already has 8 and I assure u any phone now will have 10. So why not aim higher a lot higher so now one can compare.

T-Mobile isn’t in bed with Samsung any more than the other three. As far as your wish list, Optimus 2x on the way. Patience.

    • ..x

You know not every T-Mobile customer happens to want a keyless phone. We have tons of Blackberry users who would love an Android with a Keyboard. Sidekick is a brand and what you put inside of it could be morphed for ANY audience. Unless you flat out need the phone to be called EROTICA to make it an adult phone. What truly bothers you the name? Rip away the name Sidekick and what do you have an Android 4G phone with a keyboard lets wait on specs and see. I assure u it will be better than the Motorola clan entirely, I assure u it will be up to par with any HTCs. There’s something for everyone. No we wait for specs and THEN make the big judgments

It’s called the HD2, less the HSPA+. Yes, it natively runs Windows Mobile 6.5, but all you have to do is head over to xda-developers and flash another OS. Simply the best T-Mobile phone to launch last year, because you can hack it and always stay up to date with the newest software versions. I use one along with my Galaxy Tab, and my OS options for it are WM 6.5, WM 6.5.3, WP7, Android 2.2, 2.3, Meego, Ubuntu, or Windows 95.

People need to seriously check out those forums over there, the devs are amazing.

Not a teeny bopper myTouch or sidekick.

it looks like its just slide up qwerty :(

    • i could live with that…judging off the pic the screen looks pretty big soo i cant image it doing the swivel action….. Plus i had always preferred the look of the sidekick slide over the rest of the models

      • Anonymous

i can live with it 2 but it would’ve been nice with the swivel screen, also the rumors lied then, i guess that’s why there rumors

When I was a teenager I had the sidekick 3, I loved that phone but now that i’m all grown up i’ll be sticking to the big boy smartphones TMO has to offer but kudos to TMO for not giving up on a product they believe in, it should do well

  • That doesn’t look like the sidekick that everyone like. It looks more like the mytouch 4g. If tmobile don’t start getting better phone I will switch to verizon. Hope the LG Optimus 2X comes to tmobile.

I have a vibrant and would never buy another samsung device and am thinking of leaving tmobile esspecialy since the vibrant 4g is announced (which our phone should have been). I’m not upset they are releasing a new phone, if they releaesed the galaxy s 2 i would have no problem…but the vibrant 4g which is the phone i have…really? really?

Honestly it might fail. A lot of people wont pay attention to it since most people moved on to the new “sidekicks” of the street…The BB. But I can be wrong. People started to move to BB because of the Sidekick’s lack of app store and features. Now the question is…”how many people are going to move back to sidekicks because of Android being put on it ?” What are the main age groups that will follow ?

Another thing. The name “Sidekick” is just a name! T-Mobile has the right to call w.e they want a “Sidekick”. So this device might not look like a Sidekick in the long run. Especially after seeing the screenshot at PC MAG.

  • Sidekick will always have a fanbase. The only problem is they kept falling short with only adding like 1 semi-relevant feature & a cosmetic change & have it just as expensive as the last. This time they’ve actually made a real improvement. Android alone is a HUGE improvement. Android & Sidekick, to some it’s the best of both worlds. Everyone may not like it, but that’s why their are preferences. Sidekick worked greatly for my needs. T-Mobile’s line-up is not just about high-end. & a Sidekick w/ Android 2.2-2.3 will pretty much be at least mid-end & that’s not bad at all. I mean their are phones for everyone that’s why we have flip phones, blackberries, iphone’s, touchscreen phones, qwerty keyboard phones, suretype phones, featurephone’s, smartphone’s, etc… etc.. Everyone has their own taste & T-Mobile is just trying to satisfy every flavor. Now, I will say they haven’t managed to completely satisfy their high-end users, but they are trying & I guarantee this year they will satisfy sum of you, for those that don’t expect your Smartphone to be a super computer & ask for WAYYYYY too much.

      • I heard in the comments Samsung by someone who supposedly works @ T-Mobile & was at one of the meeting. That was a major eyebrow raise. I’m like oh lawd…. lol. I rather it be HTC if anything. I believe it’ll be like swivel if there was any truth to the “twist” codename. But, from the pick it looks like a slide out qwerty keyboard design. I made a few “their” that should’ve been “there” typo’s *Waits for someone to rag on me, & “sum” when it should’ve been “some.”

        2) I remember one of my friend’s Sidekicks, one had the wheel and I think her Juicey Couture had the wheelie ball that is on my MYT3G. they may make it more like the touch pad that the MYT4G has.
        3) I see it being more like you state, a MTS4G.

will the 19.99 unlimited data plan be grandfathered ? cuz im mad that i just upgraded to a G2 in december through customer loyalty and switched to the 34.99 unlimited android plan,

    • Jamie

I thought unlimited was still only $30?

      • They probably mean unlimited loyalty data. Because I have a Android Preferred Data plan (for loyal customers) & it’s $20.

        • Coqui

No he means the $19.99 sidekick unlimited plan it included texting, web, and picture messaging for only $19.99. @”No” i agree with you, im in the exact same situation your in. i held on to my sidekick for a loooooooooooong time in hopes of keeping my $19.99 and upgraded in december for the free G2.

        • Oh. Y didn’t he just say Sidekick data plan then?, lol. Because clearly if you switch from the Sidekick data plan to a G2 data plan the price is gonna change, & you can’t go back.

alright, if that pic is real then i’m really disappointed because that looks exactly like the Epic 4G and the last thing anyone wants is another galaxy s device that will never be updated.

  • BloopBlopp

    No swivel screen? =[
I doubt this phone will even be better than the G2 or MT4G.

  • Petey

The only thing I miss about the Sidekick is it’s unlimited data plan that includes unlimited sms/mms. Other than that, Do T-Mobile think that they can sell alot of Sidekick? Nowaday it’s seems like it’s all about the iPhone. Everywhere I turn there’s an iPhone.

  • beastly

Dude. That is not a Sidekick. No swivel screen, no 5-row QWERTY, no trackball, no jump screen button, and like as not no simple ‘Kick UI. I felt bad about using my upgrade a month ago, but now that I see this isn’t the real deal, I feel better. If Magenta brought back the real deal Sidekick (plus Android Market) I’d probably buy one at full retail, but this just ain’t it. The Sidekick keyboard was the best in the business, hands down, and the swivel screen made it actually convenient to use when you needed it. Why would I take this thing over the G2?

    • Epic fail.
You cant tell any of that from the photo

  • Mr Tibbs

WTF so instead of selling THE BEST PHONE EVER THE IPHONE ur going to sale this crap!!! Great job t-mobile keep up the good work!!!

    • Isheep

    • androidfeen809

Lmao you got to be stupid, first of all this is an ANDROID sidekick you’re talking about which means no matter what the design is it will be better than your icrap especially with 2.3 android OS, it also means it won’t be nothing like the past sidekicks which had the sad and terrible danger OS. The fact that it’ll be android changes everything and hell yea am in if its got nothing bigger than a 3.8 screen (a 4.0 swivel screen can’t be good for a sidekick imagine the size of the phone, goodlord the 3.2 one was humongous!), it must have the new generation scorpion processor (idc if its 800mhz like the G2 its still fast as hell) and of course it has to be htc or else I’m not buying it.

    • hi!

it better be if they hope to sell a single one, haha

      • Haha, I’m pretty sure it is guys. I mean, they wouldn’t change the ENTIRE form factor of the Sidekick. We just gotta wait and see in the coming months what this thing is really gonna be like. Now, I shall viciously search out news on the this new Sidekick and impatiently wait for pictures =] I have my Sidekick 2,3,LX & LX09 sitting on my desk….all dusty….it’s so sad.

I am excited for the sidekick. I used to always want one but i wasn’t on t-mobile. I kind of hope it might be a new windows phone 7 device. I thought microsoft acquired the company who made sidekicks when they made kin…Perhaps this can be a much more improved version of those…

but with Android, i’m sure it will be great. I might get one of these :)

why are people downing the sidekick, just a few months ago people were begging for a sidekkick with android and now when they get what they asked for they arent happy. i just hope this device has the specs to go with this newly pumped up 4g network….. good job t-mobile keep dishing out android phone…. forget that over rated iphone 4

p.s i hope this phone doesnt have a swivel screen because that would make the phone an awkward touchscreen phone and if it does have a swivel i hope they make it so it isnt awkward

    • Eskokali

I agree about the swivel screen. I hope its a slider screen like the Sidekick Slide. I wonder who’s the maker for the Sidekick 4G. Is it htc? That would be awesome. Anyone find any clear pix of the Sidekick 4G?

      • Coqui

I would love for it to be by HTC with stock android but it seems like its samsung which means it might be running “touchwiz” reason i say that is because if you look at the pic it has one noticeably visible button a bright yellow/orange that most if not all samsung phones have the “Fn” button. just look up the samsung intercept, samsung transform, and the samsung epic 4G. just a bit of my own research/observation.

      • Glam933

I’ve seen the phone last night its samsung and its is a slider not a swivel its is pretty cool, its has a nice grip and feel to it. I was since a work in progress, but it is a unique sidekick on its own.

      G2 & MT4G = 14.4 HSPA+
      Vibrant 4G = 21 HSPA+

      easy

      • Anonymous

How does that make any sense. HSPA+ is HSPA+, what makes the Vibrant faster?!?!

        • There are different levels of HSPA+. Just like in a car how there are different V6 engines, just think of the Vibrant’s HSPA+ like a 300HP V6 engine while the G2 & MT4G as 200HP V6 engine.

    • Vibrant Addict

And then the second half of 2011 we’ll probably have 42 HSPA+ phones. It’s constant innovation.

Dude that phone is not actually the sidekick its a model they use since they don’t have the actual design and its a slide which can’t be since sidekicks have swivel screen unless they are sidekick slide which no one have said, so I don’t think its samsung making it!

  • manny

The picture that they show I dont think its the actually design of the sidekick…I heard it might have a 4.3 screen size n I hope it by HTC n it could support live wallpaper n I might go back to the sidekick if it worth it

    • Coqui

hope your right about it not being an actual design lol

    • HTC has bad hardware history. I would rather Samsung make it because they make solid hardware only hardware issue samsung had really was GPS on the galaxy S and if you didn’t exchange it within a year of your purchase date then you have no right to complain about it.

    • God I hope not, Stock Android would be the absolute best thing for this device and made by Sharp or at least the screen should be. Have a Samsung Orion in there or have Samsung make it completely with SAMOLED PLUS and Orion and stock Android and make it the unofficial Nexus S2 or if you want to call it Nexus 3

  • Vibrant Addict

That Vibrant 4G looks like a copy of the iPhone 4, seems like it has the square design of iPhone 4. I really hope Samsung didn’t copy the design AGAIN.

    • Smh… Apple didn’t invent those particular shapes you know.

  • Glam333

You are all wrong in actuality the Sidekick 4G is running android 2.3 with and it made by Samsung, Yes i said it Samsung. BTW the samsung vibrant 4g is going to ridiculously fast!!

    • Looks like a samsung but without a kickout screen this thing it doesn’t make sense to call it a sidekick

I hope it has the swivel screen and not a slide screen because it’s going to lose it’s uniqueness and not sell as much.

    • Its not true sidekick without that kick out swivel screen.

  • LeO

Ugh like I wanna see something new and unique tmobile like is that the best we gonna get samsung after samsung? and y android 2.2 when 2.3 is already out there? I hope it’s upgradeable, and thirdly can we jump on the band wagon and get a front facing cam and just make sure we have an sd slot available for use thanx a lot

    • Name any other device aside from Nexus S that is shipping with Android 2.3 or even for the matter has been upgraded to 2.3 android. Quit complaining there aren’t many differences to 2.2 and 2.3
