Samsung Wants You To Have Froyo On Your Vibrant

With the New Year come and gone, Samsung Vibrant owners are still left with questions as to when they can expect to receive Android 2.2 Froyo. Samsung has taken to Twitter this afternoon to let all Galaxy S owners know they are still working on it and hope to make it as smooth as possible. I wouldn’t doubt any current Vibrant owner who takes these words with a grain of salt as they have seemingly heard this before, in fact we can go all the way back to June to find another Samsung Tweet confirming Froyo for the Galaxy S series.

I wouldn’t blame Vibrant owners for being upset especially since the Android hacking community has had Froyo running on the Vibrant for some time now. I imagine this won’t pacify those of you who have been waiting patiently so the only positive spin we can hope to put on it is that at least Samsung is talking, rather than remaining silent. I would hope, or at least like to hope that Samsung would drop a bombshell surprise on everyone and skip right to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Here is to hoping!

I would love to ditch the Vibrant and get the Nexus S due to it being a google phone. However, the Nexus S is missing some ridiculous features! I am starting to realize that a complete phone will never happen at least not with Android. With a contract the price points for smart phones are just too close, it seems like robbing a phone of features that wouldn’t cost virtually anything extra to include is the only way to make multiple models relevant.

Back to the topic….will never buy anything from Samsung again! I’m sure many will find logical arguments that make my decision sensless, but it’s a matter of principle! F U SAMSUNG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

        • AnonGuy

I agree. That is why I”m ditching Android and going to Apple soon. Sorry, but Android is full of too much bullshit. It makes Apple’s walled Garden and cutesy designs look like heaven. It will be nice to not feel like I wasted my money < 6 months after getting a smartphone that costs this much.

  • Xizor

I find in hard to believe that it takes this long to iron out the problems with the upgrade. Do they only have like one guy on the development team. They must be spending all their time working on the next big thing (that I’m sure will be missing key components such as flash and FFC)

    • Anonymous

Its possible that they have their dev team focused on the next product. It would make sense as to why users aren’t getting timely updates if they only have one dev team for the mobile division. I mean think about it, people before Android never asked for software updates they basically have been as is sales.

I’d already had to hack my Vibrant to install the lag fix and all that. I was getting ready to start looking into Cyanogen or the stock Froyo ROM.

But then I bought the Nexus S, which is an amazing little phone. Wish it had HD cam/SD card, but then, that’s what I’ve got a real camera for. Otherwise, the phone is a good option for Vibrant owners disillusioned with the Vibrant.

Samsung is by far the worst…I wouldn’t bet a penny that Galaxy phones will ever get Gingerbread. They are really having a hard time with Froyo…wow. What a let down. They just need to stick to manufacturing and leave the software part out of their portfolio. HTC all day!

    • Nahright

No, Motorola is the worst. Followed very closely by Samsung.

Too little, too late SamSUCK! Got rid of my Vibrant for a MyTouch 4G. HTC supports their products

  • Samsungisass

Samsung is crap, didn’t they have other devices they refused to update?

    • Flashfox

With the large number of Galaxy S phones they sold versus a small group of complainers, do you think they really care? The vast majority of Samsung Galaxy S users must be pretty happy as they are silent.

It’s people like us… hackers, modders, techno-geeks, who want to push this phone further and further.

Samsung is not unique as they are not the only OEM who have delayed or killed updates. Quite honestly, people like us should quit complaining, go to XDA and flash 2.2.

If the vast majority are happy with 2.1 (as it’s evidently the case), then we are the marginals… and we should know better.

      • Flsahfox

Sorry for the “tag”. I used the wrong brackets to say “{add your own label here}”, which resulted in what you see above ;-(

I’ll believe it when i see it. It’s Samsung we’re talking about here. No real or favorable track record. They “talk”…but just can’t seem to “walk”.

Behold 2 people tried to warn potential buyers to avoid the frustration that was sure to come. But nooooo, we were shouted down when everybody jumped on the Vibrant bandwagon and yelled that Samsux wouldn’t screw a worldwide audience. LOL – Hilarious! – The fail continues…

  • Ryan

Doesn’t even matter anymore… I’m done with Samsung. I’ll stick with this until my next available upgrade and move to HTC.

    • Farhan

I agree. My last Samsung phone was the Memoir which had software (Samsung PC Studio) that I couldn’t install on my windows 7 machine. Even though it was related to the PC software, I realized that Samsung simply likes to make new phones and not provide updates for it. Behold 2 and the Galaxy series are also good examples.

If xda can make updates work in a matter of weeks on these phones, it is unacceptable that Samsung can’t do it in over 6 months.

I’ve moved on to HTC and can’t be happier.

  • Bhanna69

Do Canada and Europe have a complex/unreliable upgrade? Since they already have it, what’s the problem w/ the US version? Is there something unique about the US market that causes it to take longer? I guess I don’t get it, but when my contract runs out, I guess I’ll try something else. It has been really frustrating.

  • now_onTMO

I love my vibrant!! But samsung is pathetic when it comes to updates, fortunately I’m not too crazy about updates, it’ll be nice to have it though… im upgrading in july i hope…

I’ve tried the froyo leaks and i can say that 2.2 is indeed much better than 2.1, it’s faster… but couldn’t keep the froyo leak cos of some of the issues with it.. it looks like the update is coming..

For my next phone I am strongly considering the Galaxy S2, as the supposed specs seem very good. However I have already made up my mind that shortly after I own the phone it will be rooted, so I can take advantage of the Samsung hardware specs while keeping up with the Android updates with the advances that the Rooting community adds to the overall product

Is it possible that the carriers are holding it up and they had asked samsung to make this annouannouncement? I don’t think samsung would point fingers and blame the carriers for the delay, it could compromise their business relationship with the carriers… if it’s available in Canada already, why on earth is it not available in the US when it came out first in the US, telus fascinate and vibrant are identical…

    hmm jus thinking..

    • Farhan

I doubt the carriers have anything to do with this especially since it’s been several months. And giving Android 2.2 now is like a slap in the face considering Gingerbread is already out and working on a similar device (Nexus S).

Unless the features on 2.2 were not removed on telus fascinate, and of course US carriers must have them removed and so the delay… pfffft..

    • JonPo

      WHAT?

Telus could have kept the free features that normally come with Froyo such as native Wired and Wifi Tethering. These features are removed from carrier devices in the U.S. so removing these features could be the delay.

So Samsung is the second largest handset seller on the planet and there’s about ten people in here, the same ones over and over again, ranting about how they don’t like Samsung.

Wow, that’s really news, you idiots. Maybe you should simply buy a different phone. After all, no one is listening to your whining, especially on an article about the Vibrant getting updates.

Are you that deluded to think your repeated snide remarks matter.

Personally, I appreciate Samsung, or any company, giving customers updates. As Mr. David says, that’s better than silence. And far better than your constant complaints that are as significant as dog droppings.

    • http://tmonews.com David

See my problem isn’t the slowness with which the updates are delivered, just the silence with which the companies taking in delivering “updates” on those updates. The silence among Motorola and Samsung specifically is really just poor, being proactive for them would really go a long way in the pr world. It’s been 3 solid months since they last discussed it and promised the end of the year, now I can understand its 2 days after the start of 2011 but I would have liked to have seen them say something on say December 30th that they apologize for not meeting the hoped for timeline and will talk about it again after the beginning of the year.

I appreciate tweets like this because they will disseminate the information via twitter and it will filter through the blogs reaching most of those who care. I don’t think its asking to much to just have a few more frequent updates regarding the status of the delivery of Froyo/Gingerbread/Lollipop etc. It takes no time at all to Tweet and the pr is worth its weight in gold.

    • harley

yes and the 10 people in here are the only ones in the entire world that are upset. when the galaxy s shipped they promised a froyo update “soon”, then it was the end of the year, and now that it’s a new year and it’s back to “soon” mind you, the nexus s (which is basically a rebadged galaxy s) shipped with gingerbread and we’re still waiting on froyo. i can update via twitter that i will be able to make a car that travels a million miles on a cup of my piss “soon”. that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

Of course, it’s not just Samsung. My wife has a MT3G-Slide, and is still stuck on 2.1. Unacceptable in that case, too. But it is incredible that Samsung would do this with their flagship phone. I’d been seriously considering a Galaxy Tab, but I’m not willing to risk not having upgrades. Right now I’m running Team Whiskey’s Nero v3 with Voodoo lagfix, and it makes the phone incredible: the Vibrant’s still the best hardware on the market for Android 6 months on, which is amazing. But hardware’s only half the story, and when the dev community moves on, as it inevitably will, you don’t want to be stuck with a phone running out of date software which would otherwise be totally capable of running the most recent builds. Samsung, and other Android handset manufacturers, really need to start committing to timely updates for a fixed period of time, say 1 and a half or two years after the phone’s initial release.

    • Here David

I agree and am in the same boat (wife and me), however, got a NOOKCOLOR for xmas, rooted it and runs great. I was waiting on Samsung ‘s TAB to see if they would “grow-up” and get real after this very poor customer treatment, forget business $$$, your word is your word and the only thing real! IF SAMSUNG would offer a $50 charge for a VIBRANT unlocked replacement OS like their new Nexus S, everyone would WIN…NO MORE SAMSUNG devices for me, as much as I enjoy my Vibrant, trust lost never regained. Would be wiser to say, never updating and take that HONEST flack vs. losing face. Their CEO needs to step down as the honorable thing.

    • mytouch 4g lover

MT3G-Slide is a different story that’s a mid-end phone so the majority of the users don’t even care.

yeah my friend got it after having a sidekick and she didn’t even know it can upgrade till i told her and she still doesn’t get why she would want it to upgrade she just likes the keyboard because its like the sidekick keyboard

  • rev2redlineguy

So glad I moved on and got the G2 (now my Vibrant sits in its box as a back-up phone or “play phone”). I don’t trust Samsung and their word. They are too busy worrying about what they’re going to release next and get more money from the consumers. Not me, never again! I tried to put faith in you Samsung and you blew it for me.

  • hotrodthelovegod

i actually like my vibrant. and it is still stock. minus the lag, the gps (which works now), and not having 2.2 it has been a very good phone. but i only use mine for surfing the internet, email, text, calls, and gps. wait….this phone has sucked. my wife has the g2 and it runs circles around my vibrant.

    • hotrodthelovegod

but it is still better than my brother in laws iphone.

  • Vert

“since the Android hacking community has had Froyo running on the Vibrant for some time now”

Yes, but I am not after “hobbiest” levels of reliability either. Looking forward to a professional quality 2.2 release.

    • You’re a noob.

Seriously? If you know what you’re doing, a “hobbyist” level of reliability is a lot better than the so called “professional” release.

Do yourself a favor and don’t post anything about so called “hobbyist levels of reliability” when you obviously don’t know what you’re talking about.

      P.S. It’s “hobbyist”, not “hobbiest”.

      • Vert

I’ve experimented with various releases, and in the end went back to stock. Why? Because the reliability of the non-official releases wasn’t up to par, or key features were broken. So, based on first-hand research, the stock release was more useful as a daily driver.

I’m as fastidious as the next guy when experimenting with my phone, and the fact of the matter is that stuff from the mod community doesn’t always work the way it’s supposed to. Period. My experience is that it’s a bit of a crapshoot. Did lots of stuff work okay? Yes, absolutely. Did plenty of stuff break too? You bet.

So yeah, I stand by my comment.

Oh, and thanks for catching my spelling error. I’ll give you a penny for each one you find. Exciting!

    • Matlock!

That is a moronic statement to make. You sir should not even care about getting an update to 2.2, with statements like that. What is 2.2 really going to do for you. Its not going to make you a better person, nor is it going to make your phone a million times better. If you wanted 2.2 that bad, then you would go the so-called “hobbyist” route. My G2, is running a custom rom and I can tell you it runs a million times better than it did out of the factory.

      • Vert

It’s not moronic at all. I’ve tried various releases, and all of them had show stopping bugs that made me look for something else. It was fun experimenting, but at the end of the day I need a phone that works, so I went back to stock. Imperfect as it may be, at least it’s reliable.

No need to get so excited folks, it’s a phone, not a girlfriend.

        • Anonymous

What roms were you flashing? Nero V3 is flawless. Anything Team Whiskey does typically works quite well. The JL5 leaked rom was pretty smooth and worked very well also. I wonder if you were flashing beta versions from not so good sources.

At this point, I’m totally OVER samsung & their horrible, substandard, unacceptable, & short-sighted product support strategy (or perhaps lack of a strategy). I’m stuck w my vibrant for awhile b/c I was stupid enough to buy it (I don’t like service contracts), but as soon as an amazing new HTC phone w an incredible set of specs (has to be far superior to what I have now) is released, then I’ll seriously consider buying it & DUMPING this whole samsung situation. Of course, I’d prefer to buy an HTC phone running the most advanced STOCK version of android available, without Sense.

    • mytouch 4g lover

      G2? Maybe?

  • Anonymous

As f***ed up as the situation is, it is good business sense by Samsung.

99% of Android users either don’t know what version of Android their phone is running, don’t know the advantages that come when upgrading to Froyo or Gingerbread, or simply don’t care because they are enjoying their device.

0.9% of users are nerds/geeks/techies that know the advantages of different Android versions and take it upon themselves to root the device to obtain the latest software

0.1% know about the different Android versions but don’t want to take the risk of rooting their device, this small percentage is where most of the complaints come from.

If you were a business would you work on the next big device that is going to make you millions, or satisfy the 0.1% of users with the latest software that isn’t going to make you any additional income?

F***ed up like I said, but it makes sense what they are doing.

You talk like everyone who currently owns a Samsung phone, ie, Vibrant, had the Behold-II. While there may be some, not everyone had or knew anything regarding the Behold-II fiasco. I personally didn’t have a Samsung phone until the Vibrant. I didn’t know anything about what had happened prior with the Behold-II. So what am I [or any others like me] supposed to have learned from? Don’t get stereotypical! Fact is, I now know to stay away from Samsung phones. Then again it’s not everyone who cares about whether they have “Froyo” or “Strawberry Ice Cream” or whatever else, so long as they love and enjoy their phones.

A man is only as good as his word, A company (like Samsung) that doesn’t stand on its promises is one that will not support you. Samsung has proven as much.

My advice to all… Stay away from Samsung phones. Sooner or later you will regret it. (Nexus S may be an exception because its a Google spec, but the rest, Samsung can keep. Would I buy a Samsung phone again. I won’t accept one that is given to me anymore!)

    • Grammatica di Polizia

LOL… you sound like a politician trying to explain his being caught on video with a minor, female, street walker.

The Nexus S is a Samsung phone – and is really simply a scaled down Vibrant with a different OS.

So people in here whining and flaming Samsung have to be consistent. You can’t like the Nexus S either.

i would have gotten the mytouch4g if it wasn’t ugly as sin and if it had samoled. im stuck with my vibrant because of the hardware.

    • SpanD

In fact, the easiest way to get an uprgade of the google software is to buy a new phone! T-Mobile doesn’t have too good of a track record when it comes to upgrading if ever. 1.6 G1, 2.1 MyTouch Slide, 2.2 G2 or MyTouch 4G, 2.3…next MyTouch device…..

    • Vldigital

      Complete ignorance- check
      Utter Fanboy-ism – check

This was the only reason why I didn’t get this phone

  • Leaponover

I still don’t get these “ugly as sin” comments about the MyTouch 4G. Seems jealousy, the green-eyed monster, has reared it’s ugly head. Everyone 4G owner knows they have the best phone on t-mobile and it’s just silliness to think otherwise. Those of you talking about looks must be prima-donna metrosexuals. You dudes probably get your nails buffed and wear eye shadow. The phone could have fungus growing off of it for all I care because it’s wicked fast, has HSPA+, and does everything I need it to do. Screw the sense haters too because i’m listing that as a positive here. Sense is awesome! Normally I wouldn’t even reply to this because I know what a great phone I have and people bashing it are just jealous haters. I just felt the need this time around to set some of these turds straight on this bad ass phone!

    • Auser72

I couldn’t agree with you more, although I do miss the vibrant display and loudspeaker. I enjoy the everyday functionality of my 4g more. The sense UI is just awesome, I was intent on using launcher pro but missed sense widgets. I really love both phones and each one had their pros and cons so no need to hate.

I still don’t get why MT4G guys have to keep posting about their hardware in places that have nothing to do with them. Like your phone? Great, good for you — but the rest of us don’t care. If we did, we’d go looking for relevant topics.

  • Vash0164

Go to xda developers site, find the team whiskey vibrant rom. Its 2.2 Froyo with gingerbread accessories. My phone is marked at 1526 on the quadrant standard test. Honestly, I gave up on samsung back in November when they once again missed their own deadline. I’ll never buy a non nexus phone again, but for now. I got a phone thats only bested by the nexus s.

    • Maverick128

All I did was root mine and installed the lag fix and I’m getting around 2200. 2198 on my last benchmark with the stock rom and lag fix.

  • Madcap

Take their UNIQUE functionality and well…$^%$^%$^%$^%
We don’t want it. Just give us froyo and we will add our own UNIQUENESS to it.

Really want to throw me in a rage then tell me it is the drm to protect avatar….you know the movie on my sd card for the vibrant….the one I DONT use! (yes it works copied off but why bother?)

  • Nahright

    Samsung is a joke

  • Mikewyc

    Very disappointed by Samsung response..

  • Brycewat

Anyone nerdy enough to know you are supposed to have been upgraded is nerdy enough (like me ) to go get a custom ROM. I also concur that the Team Whiskey ROMS are the best. There is a bit of reading, but rooting and updating your phone is a 30 min process, that really isnt harder than downloading files, attatching your phone to your computer, and following directions carefully. Seriously guys, I know Samsung’s word ain’t worth much anymore, but your happiness and satisfaction with a better rom (I like Team Whiskey’s Onyx4.2) is worth more than the rage here. Android’s greatest advantage is about being an open platform that allows the community to come together when the big guys screw us over (which they often do) so you may as well take advantage of it.

I’m off the boards for a couple days and this is what I come back to huh? Some meaningless Samsung message about not updating my phone. Wow.

Well the good thing is that Team Whiskey has me covered and I’ve been running FroYo on this Vibrant for a month now(Thanx TW) and with FFC support that WILL NOT come on the stock 2.2 update. As my man Brycewat says “Anyone nerdy enough to know you are supposed to have been upgraded is nerdy enough (like me ) to go get a custom ROM.”

Its my understanding that its our carriers fault anyway since they already have the OS but they are too busy @n@l r@p!ng it to release it to us. I’m not even mad tho cuz who needs GB? who needs HC? when FY is so damn good on such a bad @$$ phone. That said I will be buying a Galaxy S2 if it has a bigger screen and not just for 2 cores.

    ~ A happy Vibrant user.

    • I_Work_For_A_Carrier

It is not the carrier’s fault. The manufacturer takes the stock android code, then puts in all their tweaks. They hand it to the carrier, who tests it. If it ends up sucking (IE: terrible, terrible bugs), the carrier rightfully refuses and hands it back to the manufacturer. Once the carrier receives a solid code and testing is complete, it is usually 1-2 weeks before the devices have it.

You should change your username to I_Am_Part_Of_The_Problem. Carriers install apps and disable features. No FFC, remember? Different hardware means more extensive driver testing, if nothing else. Samsung isn’t off the hook here, but neither is TMo.

Meanwhile I’m pretty happy running the Nero v3 ROM and the voodoo ext4 file system…

I wasnt a fan of the drunken clam. I changed it to the nexus boot.

  • 305buddyluv

To late samasung. I got rid of my Vibrant for a G2. I got tired of your crap.

  • Jini

The vibrant was my first phone from Samsung. I was apprehensive buying it due to their history with poor or nonexistent upgrades. I took the plunge thinking that since the galaxy S was being sold on such a large scale, they would have to upgrade it soon. How wrong I was !! No more Samsung phones for me.

    • remixfa.

i bought one under the same line of thought. thankfully XDA is very active in the vibrant community to keep us rolling. Awesome hardware, lackluster software otherwise. I dont think ill go back to stock when 2.2 comes around, Sammy cant match what the dev community has done to the phone. (mainly because of the different file systems used and neat tweeks)

  • Auser72

I was able to get mytouch 4g for $149.00 on early upgrade after complaining to retention dept. About disappointment with lack of update. Played up need for wifi calling that upgrade would of added.

Vibrant owners Want Samsung To put Froyo On There Vibrant

    • Anonymous

      Right. And now what??

  • TMoFan

I was looking at the Vibrant, but I’m totally happy with my G2. 2.2 runs very well and the G2 is fast despite being 800MHz. It’s my first HTC phone and I’m impressed. Samsung has nice hardware but they need to step up on the software side of things.

    • 4G_or_not_4G

Lets see how well your statement works. I too am a G2 owner, so I am expecting to see a quick turn around onto Gingerbread then to Honeycomb. As with previous stock Android phones, they were controlled by Google but the G2 is controlled by HTC/T-Mobile, and being as close to stock as you can be without a couple of crappy add ons, that we cannot delete without rooting the phone, it should be a quick turn-around. Hope that this is true and I am running Gingerbread shortly.
