(Updated: Official!) Samsung Vibrant Froyo Update Coming Via Mini Kies

Update: I’ve added in this official internal screen shot, fire up Mini Kies and get yourself Froyo!!!

To say that Samsung Vibrant owners are waking up today and checking their phones with a fury to find that elusive Froyo update would likely be an understatement. While we learned yesterday the update would in fact happen today, T-Mobile CMO Cole Brodman said the update would be staggered over time. However, early reports from the front line indicate the update will in fact take place using Mini Kies via a pc usb connection as is common with the Galaxy S line.  We can’t verify if that is actually the case, even with the above screen shot. While the shot itself does say that Mini Kies is how the update will be loaded, we don’t know if that’s the actual case just yet.

If anyone has received the update either via OTA or Mini Kies, please report back in the comments and let us know how it arrived!

Froyo looks great on the Vibrant. Once I got Kies to work properly, no problems in the update.

OK, I just installed 2.2 on my Vibrant. All went well. Here is all you do.

First, I installed it via the Samsung Mini Kies software.

    1. UNINSTALL any old versions of Samsung Kies you have on your computer.

    2. Backup all your files.

    3. Go to the below link and download/install Samsung Mini Kies.

(DISREGARD anything it says on the site about previous updates. For example, it does not say anything about Android 2.2 being available.

    4. Reboot your computer!

    5. Put any anti-virus and firewall in “game mode” or disable it.

    6. On the phone, go to Settings and put the phone into “Unknown Sources” install mode (green check mark in box).

    7. Connect your Vibrant to computer with USB cable.

    8. Say on the Vibrant to “Mount USB”

    9. Double click the Mini Kies icon on your desktop to open the program.

    10. Mini Kies will automatically detect your Vibrant and say an upgrade is available. Disregard that it does NOT say an update to Android 2.2

    11. Press “Upgrade” icon in Mini Kies and the install will take place, takes about 8 minutes.

    12. Mini Kies will say “Phone successfully upgraded.”

    13. Phone will then take about five minutes to fully install 2.2

    14. Note: The install got rid of my home page icon setup, but my live wallpaper and other files remained intact.

Tried it at work and it was no go. I’m guessing something from work network was blocking Kies.

Make sure you have administrator permissions.

    Install mini kies
    reboot
run kies~ it will do an update when you first start it.
Make sure you put your phone in Kies for usb option and plug it in.
Windows should automatically install the necessary drivers and Kies should detect it.
hit the upgrade button and let it do it’s thing.

Anyone having problems with Mini Kies, make sure your phone is properly connected, the settings are correct and that you have your anti-virus and firewall disabled.

When you connect your Vibrant via USB cable AND THEN OPEN KIES, if Mini Kies does not detect your device and IMMEDIATELY say there’s an upgrade, there’s something wrong with your setup or your connections are not correct.

Also, try a different USB cable AND USB port on the computer. Cables can go bad, as well as ports. (Dust, dirt, etc.) And some cables are cheap Chinese garbage that simply don’t work.

Or close Kies, unplug the phone, restart Kies, plug in phone, etc.
It took me a few tries for the computer to see it.

I also went to my Device Manager (in WinXP) and hit Scan for New Devices for it pop up.

If you all want to try out 2.2′s amazing graphics, go to Market and download a free Live Wallpaper called “Plasma Lamp”.

It does not work on 2.1, but it does on 2.2

It’s uber cool on the Vibrant.

Correction, it’s not a live wallpaper, it’s an app. Simply open it from your apps menu.

When I tried to use it with 2.1 a message popped up and said my Android version was “outdated.” :( How rude.

  • rvzoo

so i did this and it failed twice then all that would show up is a phone icon a ! triangle and a comp… now i have to get a replacement phone… and hopefully a loaner till then.

    • Anonymous

That computer with a triangle is what displayed on my phone while it was updating.

You sure you didn’t wait long enough?

In any event, simply connect your phone to the computer, listen for the USB connection sound (via your PC).

Then open Mini Kies and try the install, again. Click the “upgrade” icon in Mini Kies.

You may not have bricked your phone and the install will be successful. Make sure to not do a thing to the phone or computer, give it time.

Those of you having install problems may want to try a different computer for the install, if you have one.

Make sure to turn off any anti-virus and firewalls. (If you are running a third party app like Zone Alarm, make sure that Microsoft Windows AV and firewalls are stopped too. Sometimes people are running both and don’t realize it.)

Oh, I did the install without a hitch. PC was a 32 bit machine, Zone Alarm, Windows 7 Home Premium, USB 2.0 port, etc.

The Vibrant, by the way, did have the September install, Android 2.1.1 and I had the settings with debugging mode on. And don’t forget to try a different USB cable. The one you have may be partially crapped out.

once I get to 2nd stage where it says upgrade, a message pops up saying “New hardware found” and wants to install new driver. It does end up saying “ready to use” after the driver is installed but the upgrade goes nowhere, it doesn’t progress. It just sits there and ends up telling me “could not be upgraded” after a few minutes

Ok, I fixed it. Here’s what you need to do…
1.Take off the back cover and pull out your SIM and battery.
          2.Put your battery back in.
3.Hold the volume up/down buttons simultaniously and then hold down the power button. Do not release the power button until you see the yellow text start scrolling.
          4.Select erase user data.
          5.Select reboot now.

          Viola! Your phone is un-bricked.

“…So purely from a numbers game, why WOULDN’T they treat the whole thing like a big “Screw you”, cause the only ones who will be upset are a tiny fraction of the bulk of their customers, and everyone else they will just convince to go buy the new Vibrant 4g (which is almost the same phone, with an upgraded OS)…”

Except it was in various and many places in the “PRESS” which causes a ‘black-eye’ and more important showing poor ‘face’ which is the only way to get anyplace with Samsung which pulled T-mobile into saving Samsung’s face. As they know a small drop of water turns into a river which then floods which then kills which then and so on….IF all xda/TW/etc folks keep posting issues and get the “PRESS” to pick up the story then and only then will change happen as it did this time. They will wait until FORCED into action as it is in their interest to wait and only after the “PRESS” publish the unrest will they do the ‘fair’ and morally correct actions, sadly…IMHO

If we do not keep the pressure up, many folks can not do the update the way they are forcing it currently (jump thru hoops) when all they have to do is make it a down loadable file off the web.

sounds like you bricked your phone somehow, you will need to reflash it probably.

    • Marc

Mine did that too, I just let it sit for about 10 minutes and it reset itself.

I’ll repeat this from yesterday since people are not reading all the comments in here.

IT STAYS WITH THE FLASHING “S” ABOUT SEVEN TO TEN MINUTES!!!

It is installing the upgrade during that time.

Be patient people. But if you want to remove your battery and screw up the install, go ahead. Just plan on spending an hour or two trying to fix the install.

If it get’s to the “S” that’s a good thing. Again, be patient.

I’ve never been more aggravated in my life. I am a networking student who’s about to graduate and I
can’t get this damn update to work. My GPS stopped working so I called them and they told me I needed the update from today, but I would have to download it on my computer and then install it. Easy peasy, right? Not hardly. I have tried on 4 different computers. Anti-virus off, etc, and it says it’s an unregistered device and will not allow me to click upgrade. I’ve spent over an hour doing this on this brand new phone they sent me because my last one crapped out 2 months after receiving it. I’m starting to think that the Vibrant isn’t as great as I originally thought it was because this is the second phone I’ve had issues with in two months!

    • KP3624

take out your sim card and make sure debugging is enabled under development. I went through same problems you did but when i did above it worked for me.

Isn’t T-Mobile rolling this out with an auto update over the next 2 weeks? Why go through all the head ace with kies?
