(Updated: Official!) Samsung Vibrant Froyo Update Coming Via Mini Kies

Update: I’ve added in this official internal screen shot, fire up Mini Kies and get yourself Froyo!!!

To say that Samsung Vibrant owners are waking up today and checking their phones with a fury to find that elusive Froyo update would likely be an understatement. While we learned yesterday the update would in fact happen today, T-Mobile CMO Cole Brodman said the update would be staggered over time. However, early reports from the front line indicate the update will in fact take place using Mini Kies via a pc usb connection as is common with the Galaxy S line.  We can’t verify if that is actually the case, even with the above screen shot. While the shot itself does say that Mini Kies is how the update will be loaded, we don’t know if that’s the actual case just yet.

If anyone has received the update either via OTA or Mini Kies, please report back in the comments and let us know how it arrived!

    Success!!

Had to install Samsung Kies Mini twice, and download two different drivers. Then the phone got stuck on that stupid ‘S’ for a long time, did a couple resets and it worked finally.

But in the end I have FROYO finally!!

You don’t have to reset. I was just about to do it, after a couple minutes of waiting, but it clicked over in the last seconds before I took the battery out.

You will need to register your device or the updates will not happen…This is just more DUMB %%$##%..If “…You will need to register…” at Samsung site then why not have it as a down loadable file there?

More, “we do not care about customers we only care about what Samsung wants” Sure wish FCC, someone would take them to tasks. If you want to enjoy the fruits of U.S. market and airway then you have to act in an fair and just manner. Yes, Samsung sells phones, however, they are to be used on U.S. bandwidth therefore their business practices fall within FCC oversight.

Here is the solution to your problem..PLEASE POST THIS IN YOUR ARTICLE…

In order for kies-mini to see the device USB DEBUGGING MUST BE ENABLED. You must have the USB settings set to “ask on connection”…then exit that screen, enable debugging, power on KIES-MINI..when it says connect phone, CONNECT PHONE. It will read the phone and tell you the update is available..However on your device you will NOT see the usual KIES screen saying connected..Please allow device a few minutes to load binary files and it will auto-change to Download mode and complete the update its self. All done…Please let phone sit for 20 minutes (THIS IS A MUST) after upgrade as the phone is still setting up binary coding and programming. After that reboot again and allow 5 minutes again (AGAIN THIS IS A MUST). After that you are set to go. ENJOY FROYO ON YOUR VIBRANT!

I got the update from Kies…I didn’t have any trouble once it didn’t come back with “Unregistered Device.” The performance is faster from what I have tested so far. It did revert my home screens back to the factory default, but performing the upgrade was smooth (once it arrived anyway).

Will my photos and video be deleted in the whole process? Someone please let me know…that ay I can bsck up tje files on the computer.

mine were just fine, the only thing that changes are your homescreens they change to stock

    • http://twitter.com/JB_Richmond Joe Burroughs

My photos and videos did not get deleted. Never hurts to back up, but mine went unchanged. It will reset your homescreen back to defaults, so you’ll need to remember where all your apps were located on the screens.

NO PICTURES WILL STAY GO AHEAD

      • Anonymous

Were your “pictures” on your SD card? If so, then people are going to be in for a rude surprise if they install 2.2 when their “pictures” are residing on the phone’s internal memory.

Disregard my warning if 2.2 is NOT a new ROM and simply updates elements of the Vibrant’s 2.1 ROM.

If that’s what this update does, that’s surprising to me because I thought 2.2 was an entirely new ROM and I am not aware of any OS install not “wiping” the internal memory beforehand. Of course, perhaps the Vibrant’s chip as a part designated the “internal SD” that is where pics and video are stored, and that’s not accessed during an update.

Even so, before any major install it’s a good idea to perform a backup of any files residing on the internal memory. I simply don’t trust what a manufacturer says about an install, e.g., files won’t be affected.

    • Anonymous

See my response in here, but also…. those people saying that their pics and video did not get deleted, I suspect they have their camera and camcorder set to save files on to the microSD card and that’s why they did not get deleted.

From experience, a new ROM install will wipe or delete any files (pics, video) you have on your phone’s internal memory.

And on the Avatar question, that won’t be deleted because the movie came on the included 2GB microSD card. But if you have that 2 GB card on the phone, I’d remove it when doing the install, since in the past people have reported that on installing a ROM the SD card was wiped too. But most of those complaints were back in the days of the G1.

After seeing all this confusion with Kies I’d rather download KA6 or KA7 from xda and flash using odin.

  • Anonymous

Bonus Tip: Always remove your microSD before doing any install. That’s playing it safe and assures your apps or files won’t get deleted.

  • Anonymous

Yes, installing a ROM will delete your pics and video, that are on the phone’s memory.

If you have files ON the internal memory, connect your phone to your computer and transfer them off the Vibrant.

Generally, a ROM will “reformat” your Vibrant’s internal memory (that’s the same as your computer’s hard disk). In other words, just like when you reformat your computer’s hard drive and install a new operating system, during the install of a new Android version, the install process will delete anything that’s on the phone.

Sometimes patches or updates, that are NOT a complete ROM, will not delete files, but even then it’s better to copy or transfer the files from the internal memory and on to your computer, since you never know.

    Thanks for posting this info.

People reading this, before any install you should always backup your information that’s residing on the Vibrant’s internal memory (Market has lots of free backup apps).

Also remove your microSD card BEFORE any install.

Possibly…I’m guessing most of the people that are able to do this never flashed using ODIN to get the JI6 build. I’m trying to downgrade back to JF6, but the download says it’s going to take about 24 hours, not sure what’s wrong with that server

I did it yesterday sort of accidentally trying to figure out if I could tether without rooting. I already had kies mini on my windows 7 32bit machine but always had trouble connecting. I unmounted the SD card to try something I’d read about tethering, remembered the usb never connects without first turning on debugging in usb.
Anyway it told me there was a firmware upgrade & I just followed the instructions. Took about 15-20 min. Gave me warnings about backups etc I just kept clicking OK to everything & after the warning to not touch the phone or computer or shut anything off – it just did it’s thing.

Now I have a setting for tethering that worked once fantastically, faster than my comcast broadband & today I can not get it my computer to recognize the phone as modem no matter what I try.

BUT YES I did download successfully on this factory reset/refurb with JI6 to now running Froyo 2.2

  • rev2redlineguy

Okay so I’ve been tooling around with my now Froyo 2.2 Vibrant and here are a few things I’m experiencing: some lag when backing out of apps going to homescreen; in applications, at one point it went non-responsive when touching an app to launch. I had to back out of it a couple of times before it worked again; signal strength indicator is going wacky again; GPS was okay it found my location but still off. So far it’s okay but I think I’m packing her back up and going back to my G2.

contrary to what most people are experiencing, super fast and responsive, love how the screen is darker, battery life so far 80% after about half an hour of calls and lots of texts and 8 hours since unplugged, not counting the 15 monts of it being plugged in for the update

Ok, I fixed it. Here’s what you need to do…
1.Take off the back cover and pull out your SIM and battery.
          2.Put your battery back in.
3.Hold the volume up/down buttons simultaniously and then hold down the power button. Do not release the power button until you see the yellow text start scrolling.
          4.Select erase user data.
          5.Select reboot now.

          Viola! Your phone is un-bricked.

That’s the issue, 64 bit. The Mini Kies site says the app is for 32 bit OS versions.

Keep getting “the device is not supported by kies vibrant”…

Windows 7 64bits… Is this the problem?

So does anyone know what the difference between build KA6 and KA7 is? Maybe 2.2.1? T-Mobile’s forums say that some users have gotten KA7, Kies gives you the “latest” being KA7. I dunno about you but I want the absolute latest. Anyone have KA7 and can list their device (is it a different Galaxy S model?)…

Also, Kies says this update was from two days ago (1/19). Strange…

I’m assuming KA6 is to shut people up, and we will get 2.2.1 OTA sometime later. KA7 is NOT 2.2.1

Thanks. I wish T-Mo would say something about KA7…

Official post from T-Mobile on getting the update (can this be made sticky?):

You WILL NOT get this update over the air. You MUST get it through the Kies software provided from this link.

Froyo looks great on the Vibrant. Once I got Kies to work properly, no problems in the update.
