Is The Nexus S Randomly Rebooting?

I can’t say I’ve heard much about this before the last 24 hours but according to the boys at Androidandme a real deal problem exists with the Nexus S. As it stands, it can happen on the phone, listening to streaming radio or playing a game and the Nexus S will just reboot. You’ll find yourself staring at the reboot screen and wonder, “why did my music stop?”

First reported on the Google Mobile Help forums on December 28th, we trust that Google is aware and a fix is hopefully coming soon. Taylor of Androidandme discovered that the problem can occur in airplane mode so the problem likely doesn’t reside on the T-Mobile side of things and is a bug in the phone and/or software.

Taylor even goes so far as to suggest that you should pause before purchasing the phone as this problem has been incredibly frustrating. If you’ve been eyeing the Nexus S, you might want to keep another eye open for a fix. Rest assured when that happens, we’ll have you covered.

Any of our readers with a Nexus S experienced this trouble? Have you discovered any fixes to prevent it?

Mine doesn’t but I did hear that a small number of them are. I know 2 other people who have a Nexus S and they also aren’t seeing this problem. Taylor Wimberly from Androidandme.com said his Nexus S does have the rebooting issue.

the g2 did the samething when it was forst released and no one knew why

    • Snorefest

weird… neither myself nor any of my colleagues ever had that problem with g2. or g1. or any other phone except the samsungs and motorolas.

  • Cnass007

Mine does it too! I’ll be texting someone and then look up at the TV, when i look back down its at the startup screen and like wtf?

Wow , all this talk about Samsung phones and now this possible issue? Can’t say I experienced this on my nexus s, but the data connection today is terrible for some reason, Tmo said tower. hmmm
I agree with non-fiction. I went thru 3 G2′s my first one had the random reboot.

  • Jalberty

I don’t have a Nexus S, but I do have a Samsung Vibrant and this is something that happens to my phone almost every day. Sometimes it just reboots, other times I have to take the battery out because it freezes. I did send an email to Samsung and got no reply. Whent to Tmobile and they told me that this is just how the phone behaves on a regular basis and that they can not replace my phone.

Haha mines actually done this while I’ve been listening to music. I pull it out of my pocket and its got the nexus start up screen going on. Its done it enough that its noticeable but my g2 and g1 before this did similar things so its not that big of a deal to me.

    • phoneguy

      try replacing your sd card.

  • Nobodyshome101

I have this problem too. I’m on my 2nd Nexus S. Exactly one week that I got my Nexus S, I had to get a replacement from Best Buy. My mobile hotspot has never worked. It always says error even after restarting and restoring the phone. My replacement device freezes and randomly resets as well. I like the phone but definitely disappointed.

not an android thing…. but it is a crappy phone thing….. smasung, motorola, all use custom ui’s in their android phones… and what happens? all those phones with custom ui’s reboot randomly and have other bugs. it started with the behold2. and continues today…… stop supporting custom ui’s. its bad for android. vanilla android = 0 issues w/ random reboots.

I actually bought the Nexus S and had the random reboot problem a dozen times within the first hour of owning it and setting it up. I took it right back to Best Buy and got my money back. It was the same type of problem that led me to ditch the Nexus One after only a few months. I figured new manufacturer would have resolved that issue.

I have one and I have noticed this problem. However, it’s only happened a total of three times in the couple weeks I’ve had it. It’s not been that big of a deal. A fix would be nice though…

    • Snorefest

yes. its never a big deal when a system continually crashes and reboots for no apparent reason…. never…..

      • http://www.rewdy.com/ A-Rox!

Dude, my point is that it happens so infrequently that it doesn’t really affect the overall experience that much. It is a problem, but not something that I am upset about.

My nexus one has never done it because of hardware problems.. maybe because I had an unstable rom running but that’s not HTC or Googles fault… I blame Samsung they should stick to TV’s the only have nice screens

  • Pv

Yes, I have experienced this issue while on a phone call and while trying to open an email in Touchdown.

There are plenty of better phones out there and coming soon. The only reason to get this phone is because it’s google’s preferred device. Otherwise, you could do better. Not just for the issue described above but for various shortcomings.

I’ve noticed it…but it’s not that annoying. the reboot is pretty fast too. sometimes i only know because my recent apps is empty

Not having this problem, but have only used Nexus S for 5 days so far… Knock on wood…

No issues at all…..best phone I have ever owned, period.

    • Snorefest

its only been a week. give it time

  • Vibrant

Typical Samsung quality right there. Even with Google’s help, Samsung can’t make a decent smartphone.

    • TmoMike

Guarantee you it’s not a manufacturer problem. SEVERAL different Android devices from several different manufacturers have the same exact issue.

      • MT4G

        No they don’t.

        • disfunctlguru

I’ve got a MT3G and this has occurred a handful of times, I even got a free replacement from Tmobile, only to find the replacement has had this happen twice.

Over 14 months total ownership, its probably randomly rebooted 7 times.

other than loving the phone too much.

i remember this used to happen ALOT with a treo650 i had a few years back

I had this problem with my Nexus One for a little while in the beginning. It took them about a month to fix it and it hasn’t happened since. I’m sad they took out the microsd on this phone… Nexus One still rocks.

I’ve had this happen to me, and it always said I had a voicemail (using both Tmobile vm and google voice). I also had a terrible clicking noise in the ear piece while on a call. Contacted samsung, had to mail them my device but we’ll see….

I’ve had my NS since the day after launch day, and it’s happened to me once so far. It happened during a long distance call, about 35 mins into the conversation, phone fully rebooted itself. No more problems since – knock on wood…

yes, it’s been randomly rebooting. I returned it yesterday.

  • Jizzinmypants

hahahaha. Samsung. when will people learn NEVER BUY anything from Samsung (LED TV’s not included, those are decent from Samsung,) but do not buy samsung phones. if someone gives you one, politely hand it back to them and say “no thanks”

  • Someone

I have this problem on my g2.

  • Sixmilliondollarman

So Samsung is coming out with a HSPA+ Nexus S+. You fools that all went out to get this rebooting phone made by Samsung should have read the posts and not have purchased this junk. It was known as outdated from day 1. NO HSPA+ and no SD card and blah blah blah…no buy here. The N1 was a revolutionary phone and held its top place for over a year. To date the N1 is still top dog in most peoples opinion. See you on the reboot……………………..

    • Cboler2

Dang. Sixmilliondollarman harsh words but very true, everyone(well mostly tech people) knew the Nexus S was outdated at launch..Good things come to those that wait I guess

      • Sixmilliondollarman

        Exactly.

When a phone comes out and it makes you raise one eyebrow, makes your jaw drop, your heart goes faster, you start to drool, – then and only then – do you even consider purchasing this new phone. Just words to the wise. LOL

  • Sammyugggg

….”we trust that Google is aware and a fix is hopefully coming soon”
This is a Samsung Problem! not google! My old vibrant used to do it regardless of what was running or what you asked it to do…just Whomp there it was Reboot!

    • http://twitter.com/flaw ♥ Eleni

Yeah, when I was on AT&T I heard a lot about the Samsung Captivate rebooting and just plain shutting down. That made me wary of the Nexus S being a Samsung, and so far it seems like it’s pulling the same BS as the Galaxy S phones.
