Let me tell everyone that it is totally worth it! My phone runs way faster!!! Yet to try the gps to see if that is fixed. The look is kinda different. WiFi calling is great and sounds crisp and clear. Camera functions are allot better. The Performer manager is also upgraded and it works way better than any third rate app killer!

Stupid Kies dies on Win 7. Keeps getting “application stopped responding”. I checked the forums and I’m not the only one. Any idea if they can upgrade this in the store?

it’s not working on Win7 x64 for met, WININIT.dll error and apparently it’s not compatible with the OS. It’s loading on Vista x32bit but on stage two when the actual upgrade happens it asks to load a driver and that’s when it dies

      • 45grave

I’m using windows 7 x64 and it worked fine, the first time. You may want to make sure the drivers installed. That was my problem yesterday while working on another problem. I installed mini kies and it installed the drivers. Then, when I plugged in the phone, it installed drivers again. Or, you can try downloading those drivers from the samsung site like I did, but that was an exercise in futility. Worse case, uninstall drivers if they did install and try to install again.

    • Anonymous

I have Win 7 Home Premium on my desktop PC, 32 bit. Mini Kies installed without any issues 2.2 installed on my Vibrant, first time around. Usually that’s not the case, I am always the one with install problems.

Note that the Mini Kies page says requirements are:

•Desktop/Laptop Computer Running 32bit Versions Of Either Microsoft Windows 7, Vista, or XP

•All Firewall & Anti-Virus Programs Should Be Disabled

•Administrative Privileges Required To Download & Install Software Including Drivers

•An Available USB Port On The PC

      PHONE

      •Fully Charged Battery

      OTHER

•USB Data Cable (Included In Retail Box)

•Any Previous Samsung Kies Software Should Be Removed

      • spongebob71

Got it to work. Did it from my PC at work running Win XP. No issues except I had to disable my anti-virus. Other than that it was straight forward with just a lot of waiting.

Now does anyone have a list of the changes?

Oh and it pissed me off that all my home screens were set to defaults. I had to redo them all.

About time ! I like my phone again….

  • Catsigh

It didn’t recognize mine for a while. I kept trying plugging it in and unplugging it and it finally gave me the install.

Unfortunately I ended up having to delete all user data to get my phone to boot. I tried hard reboot and got error codes.

It’s running very nicely now but I’m having to reinstall all the apps. I also am having to go in and clear the download manager between downloads. This isn’t new to me. That has been an ongoing issue with the phone for me.

So be patient and keep trying.

I do not have the Avatar movie any more :(

      • Anonymous

Do you mean the Avatar on your home page? That was just a shortcut to the microSD card.

Avatar came on the 2GB microSD card included with the phone. Out of the box the Avatar shortcut icon was on the home page, the same as the SIMs game. Did you go into Applications and find the icon there? It should still be.

I have a 16GB card. When using that I removed and stored the 2GB card containing the movie into the original Vibrant box (so when I sell my Vibrant I can include the 2 GB chip with movie).

Do you still have the 2 GB card in the Vibrant’s microSD slot? If so, the movie should still be in there. Check it out with your computer’s Windows Explorer.

Report back, I am curious about this.

By the way, the movie is in a directory on the chip called “Movie” and the movie has DRM (digital rights management) protection, so it only opens on the Vibrant.

The movie is titled “avatar.dcf” and is 1.47 GB.

The DCF file extension is used by Samsung and T-Mobile on the Vibrant to protect copyright, specifically James Cameron’s movie.

DCF uses encryption to act as DRM copy-protection so Avatar can only be opened by the Vibrant.

Although protected, when upgrading to my 16GB sd card i was easily able to copy the file over. It works on the new sd card in my Vibrant and MyTouch 4g.

Video file is still also accessible after the update, after doing a powercycle.

I really, really, really appreciate this update. It’s fantastic. But…

It’s kinda goofy the way we have to get it installed. I am sure it’s all Samsung’s doing, but still kind of an odd procedure.

That said, it’s a good thing that installing 2.2 did not delete apps, files and settings. That’s sure better than how it used to be, the install would wipe the phone.

  • I guess I got pretty lucky. I was getting a “Cannot contact server” for a while but a few mins later it worked, and I didn’t have to do anything special like USB dev mode. One issue I had having to do with the BT in my car not auto-connecting is still broken, (and GPS still sucks) but otherwise it’s an improvement.

  • All I can say is, THANK YOU FINALLY, I along with everyone else, was beginning to lose faith, but again, thank you. I will remain with tmobile as long as you can move forward with regular updates WITHIN 5 MONTHS of google releasing source code, as stated in PCmag by tmobile CMO. :)

Using a Windows Vista PC, I used the instructions above and downloaded via Kies mini I’m finally up on Froyo! Took about an hour. Thank you David for keeping us all up-to-date.

After spending about 30 minutes playing with the update here is what I’ve noticed thus far:

    1. GPS appears to be a lot more accurate (although I haven’t tested it while on the road).
    2. Very responsive and a lot faster.
    3. Avatar does not launch.
    4. Gmail introduces a better layout.
    5. Scroll bar is inaccurate in Contacts (A,B,C column on right hand side overlaps Search Bar) and the bar is barely visible.
    6. All my aps and wallpaper remained on phone.
    7. Improved Google Search.

Although I’m happy to finally have received this update, I’m still very disappointed for the lack of communication from T-Mobile/Samsung over the past 7 months and that it took this long to deploy. I also find it interesting that the CEO never mentioned that this was not going to be an OTA update at the time of the press release (I’m sure he knew). No one should have to go through all these hoops just to fix a phone (ie: GPS). Better get with the game T-Mobile or you’re going to losing more customers than you have already.

  • So…T-Mobile’s Galaxy S device now has the 2.2 update whereas the other carrier’s still don’t have theirs…yet T-Mobile was the MAIN carrier being hassled about not updating theirs…how come the other carriers weren’t getting as much of a hassle about it?? I’m just saying…T-Mobile did good in my opinion…I think everyone just likes to pick on T-Mobile cuz they’re seen as the underdog among all the carriers…

    • GuessMe

I agree! Some people have nothing better to do than complain… even when they are leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else. You wanted it, you got it.

FYI most of the world got their update via Kies as well. Next, it is still a staggered update. Everyone will not be able to upgrade their device today. All this info is readily available in the same articles everyone is quoting from.

  • Josh0408

Took a minute to figure out but I did it! Now how do I unlock my movie avatar?

  • ww77ww

I completed the update – no problems other than a big 10 minute delay from when I plugged the USB in until it started updating.

But something is wrong – I can’t access or compose text messages at all via the default “messaging” program or “Handcent”. The phone seems lagged – reacts very slowly in some apps. What”s wrong?

    • ww77ww

Now I can’t even do anything – when I “swipe screen to unlock”, the screen doesn’t recognize it is being touched. Nice software.

Samsung, thanks for continuing to suck. I still can’t install the update to the Vibrant. MiniApplication stopped working. GG…

Has anyone had the problem of GPS not picking up a signal at all???? Not that I have Froyo, it won’t pick up a signal under a clear night….When I got the maintenance update before, it got better, now it is completely terrible….please let know what others are experiencing, what can be done to help?

  • Looperz21

Have a rooted vibrant with wifi tethering already… Has anyone updated 2.2 and still have superuser?

    • Jaynrb

some forum sites have a deodexed rooted version of this… i ran it for about 1 hour ( that was as much as i could handle). Still very slow. Lag fix was enabled and still very slow. Once the devs get a hold of the source it will be a win. I do think this is just to shut most ppl up about never getting anything.

I rooted mine a few days ago when Tmobile announced they were not going to do the update. Rooted was great. The update ran fine but did remove my root access.

Also, if you do the update, it puts all your homescreens back to the default. Take a screen shot (if your rooted) before you update.

  • Flyoverguy

I am just curious if anyone else is wondering..all these claims that mini-kies gives a path to upgrade from JI5 seems to be just taunting those of us that were a bit too overeager to actually get our GPS working with the 1st upgrade. I have not been able to get the claimed upgrade from JI5 to JI6 or the claimed JI5 to Froyo with Kies. I am willing to admit that I’m a bit too gun-shy to actually Flash back to stock…I just think that this BS about being able to go from JI5 to a supported version is pretty cruel.

Has anyone been able to officially upgrade anything from JI5, and how did you do it!!

no joy for me, I had installed JI5 (worked great for me), no luck on Kies Mini. I get the ‘unrecognized device’ message when I connect my Vibrant to the USB. Hope there is a fix, no idea how to go back to base firmware.

      • Anonymous

@Markc You might try turning on USB Debugging. In Applications/Development on the Vibrant. That should get you going.

        • Markc

thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately, same result – unrecognized firmware :( Seems to be an issue with JI5 – hopefully there will be a fix that someone finds.

        • Johnsma4

  • Not once did i complain about Samsung (the lack of Froyo on the Samsung Vibrant) but this BS stops when they(Samsung) decided to delete/not put the Ocean Wave Live wallpapper when you upgrade to Froyo! >:(
That wallpaper was not only their best it also promoted/showed how awesome their SAMOLED screen really was. Luckly I was able to find it on the Android Market(for free :D) because someone improvised/ was one step ahead of Samsung!

Froyo 2.2 works awsokme on the Samsung Vibrant! It’s super quick!

I cant get Avatar to work now that it has Froyo! Help!

Does anyone know how to activate the wifi Tethering?

    • Anonymous

Download a free game called “Plasma Lamp.” It only works on 2.2.

Not only is it a cool game, but it will show off the SAMOLED display. People that I have shown it to today have gone “WOW!.” Even the guys at the T-Mobile store were really impressed with it. There’s a free version and paid one. Download the free version.

I don’t think that would happen. AFAIK to “unroot” a phone that has been rooted you have to install specific apps to do that.

I had the same issue, and turning on USB Debugging still didn’t work.

  • got it

4 computers later I got my phone to update. Yes!

    • Shelby

      It shouldn’t take 4 computers. /not jealous

  • Beaker151

ok i guess I am beyond help. I can not get a single computer to recognize my vibrant. Trust me I have tried all 3 computers in my house and my neighbors were nice enough to let me try their computers so 35 computers and none will recognize my phone when contecting via usb. I have not rooted, moded or done anything since I bought it from tmobile. I have spent the better part of 17 hours just trying to find a computer that will not tell me is does not recognize the usb device. I have tried every setting I can think of, read and operating system (windows xp, vista, 7, linux and mac) so I guess I am just meant to have froyo.

    • Beaker151

i meant to so someone of something is telling me my vibrant and froyo were just not meant to be

    • Florezsfour

did you first go to your settings and select applications, then usb settings, and then highlight the “ask on connection” button, after selecting this hit the home key. After this when you plug the usb cord to your phone and then your computer. there will be a pop up screen that should come up asking for you to open files, etc, etc, just x out of that. it should then start to work. Assuming you have downloaded the kies file and opened it? I hope this helps….

    • guest

before you hook up your device go into settings, applications, development, and select usb debugging. then connect your device and it should recognize it. thats what worked for me. just remember before you even start to also go into settings, applications, USB settings and select Kies at the top. then do the other i told you, and you should have no problems. good luck

Update went flawlessly for me. I didn’t mind waiting although it was disappointing. My next phone will be vanilla android. But not nexus s. I ll wait until dual core nexus comes out. Samsung phone is good. Its fast and very nice looking. Good battery life. I think ui makes it a little sluggish though. Gas sucks compared to HTC. Overall i like it better than HTC phones that are currently out.

    • Email

I meant gps instead of gas.

  • Mtnman

I love all the new features. The Wi-Fi calling,Tethering up to 5 devices, Flash 10.1 and most importantly I can now call using voice on my Bluetooth again. I did a speed test via Wi-Fi and got 11.50 download. Neocore gave me 57.5fps. Quadrant Standard gave me a rating of 976. Not perfect, but it’s pretty good.

    • Catsigh

My phone was rooted before I did the upgrade. I was getting 2199 on Quadrant standard before Froyo. Looks like it’s no longer rooted – had to erase user data to get it to boot all the way. Now I want to root it again and see what it does.
BTW, for some reason I download Quadrant standard, but it doesn’t install. Weird…

  • Kaynae01

    David,

I just read this info about the vibrant and called 611 twice and both times they said the update will come OTA. So we should just be looking for it…as of yesterday

    • Anonymous

I would not trust anything a call to 611 says. They are known for getting things wrong all the time.

Moreover, I am assuming David’s info is solid. Notice that the posted graphic says that this update WILL NOT be delivered OTA.

So either the CSRs you called to were wrong, or David’s info is incorrect. I’m betting it’s the former, albeit this is a convoluted way to update the phone. But maybe this is the way of the future with Samsung, they will use Kies to update it handsets and leave T-Mobile out of it. I can see T-Mobile liking that way of doing things. And if it gets me Samsung updates faster, I am all for it too.

  • Erivera989

Am I the only one getting the “failed to connect to the model information server” I have been trying for two hours, first hour attempt was last night at around 12EST and again this morning at 6EST. Am I doing something wrong, no one else seems to have posted this error. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • well to those who are going through with this ridiculous process of getting froyo, congratulations i guess. Hopefully, it goes well for you all. I hate seeing Samsung jerk people around all the time. (sigh). I hope someday Samsung Mobile goes bankrupt and disappears. In the meantime, enjoy froyo vibrant fans!

after updating via kies mini my vibrant has some trouble getting 3g networks. does anyone know about this?

  • Nastleford

after updating now the wifi doesn’t work on my qwest dsl. works perfect on my cable internet. i know the router and modem is fine because the ipod, wii, laptop all work fine. not sure who to blame on this one?

  • AndyAndy

So I got mine working… but I’m really curious about the wifi tethering. It works on my phone, but I thought you had to pay extra for it? Anyone know the details about this feature..is it free with my regular “unlimited” data plan?

  • beastzzz

i have the same problem. some thing with the 3g network is not getting signal

This worked for me after many failed attempts… on your phone go to settings, applications, usb settings, SELECT KIES (do not select ask on connection). Hit back button, go to development, enable usb debugging (make sure you do this after selecting kies, not before). Hit home button. Plug the usb into your phone & pc. DO NOT touch anything on your phone. Your pc will download drivers, wait for this to finish. Finally, open kies mini. Kies mini will open and show your upgrade available. This worked for me!

Has anyone had an issue with not being able to open Avatar? When I open it says do you want to unlock, click yes and nothing happens??? Other than that everything went well with the update.

    • Overgunned

Avatar doesn’t work and probably need addressed by TMo. If you browse to the file with the file browser, press and hold on the avatar.dcf file and select details. The last entry is “Right status” and it shows expired. So the update wiped the license for the movie

Note to anyone using any version of WINDOWS 7. I have called 3 people at galaxy s support, and they all confirmed that kies mini is NOT compatible with any versions of windows 7. It will work with most vista and all xp’s though. For those of you who are wondering.

Is there anyone who successfully updated but now you’re having a few issues such as: When I’m talking on the phone and I receive a text, it is automatically read out loud and the person on the line can hear it (I can’t figure out how to turn that crap off)? Or why is it that you have to go into the menu and switch b/w vibrate and silent in the sounds menu? The options to switch to vibrate or silent by using the volume rocker are gone only one is offered at a time until you switch it in the sounds menu. And why in the flying hell did they take away the android keyboard?

Still no luck no my end with getting my vibrant to contect to Windows 7 and to add my frustration I have been able to successfully get a motorola cliq and a myt4g to connect just by plugging in the usb. I have tried every usb driver I can find, every phone setting and still nothing. I have resigned to the fact that me and froyo were not meant to be on the vibrant.

Also i have tried multiple computers and mulitple operating system so I can pretty much say its the phone.

thank you i was stuck forever. You are the ONLY person that stated this fact. Once I switched to debug mode it installed fine.

  • Mine keeps saying unregisterable device. I called T-Mobile and they have no clue because Kies is not supported by them. Called Samsung and they state that the Kies Server is overloaded so thats why it wont work. So I guess we should either wait or get lucky

  • Dcripp

Now the GPS is not working AT ALL! We got the GPS upgrade a couple months ago that fixed the problems with the GPS, now it’s not picking up any signal. The update went fine on a Win 7 64 bit, I have to re-build all my pages and icons, etc…no big deal.

I hope Samsung didn’t “rush” something out just to shut us up? I’ll be expecting another update soon to fix the issues with GPS.

Kies mini failed to complete the update process,It said something about unable to upgrade.Something about emergency recovery mode. Phone kept saying “DOWNLOADING”. Left it there for 30 min.I gave up. Now I think it;s bricked. only displays a “phone..!..comptuer”. Icon. called tmobile, they tried to help me boot.No luck so they are sending me a new phone. They also said to reinstall kies mini and try again but I’m afraid too.thing that sucks is I lost all my pics and videos of my family and I.

    • USAGIAN

I am right now updating and it stopped the process at 94%. More or less the same case as yours. Will call to T-Mobile before disconnect it.

      • USAGIAN

Applied the Kies mini’s emergency recovery option and it finally completed the upgrade. Now let’s see how is working the phone.

    • Dstorm

Download odin on akaskriller.com then eugene373 no brick pda, then flash it to the phone, after reboot it will say i9000, from here you will pull the battery and re insert it, go back into download mode and flash stock jfd.pda with 512.pit and bam your phone is back to stock out of the box with your pics still on board. Akaskriller. com donate and download all files as mentioned above and he has great how to videos. To keep your pics and all files do not wipe all data or cache in recovery screen nor check reparation in odin or you will loose everthing

I tried to installing using a Win 7 computer , the mini kies app kept crashing. Finally, I was able to do it on a Win XP computer..at first the mini kies did not recognized the device, kept trying on different usb ports and it found the device after several tries…installation went without a hitch..please pay attention to the instructions on tmonews.com..avoid touching the device …when it finally reboots it gets stuck on the Galaxy S opening animation…leave it alone it will eventually load the Android Home screen ;when that happens then you can disconnect the phone from the computer..everything is working good and download speeds appear faster..can anybody confirm that indeed downloading is faster? Also, make sure to use touchwiz UI when u connect the phone to the computer instead of Launcher Pro., use the usb cable that came with the phone that made things easier.

    • Tigremalo

I love the wireless tethering and new widgets..Gmail is easier and stock android browser displays flash video great….I can live with this phone now until a the Optimus 2X makes it to Tmobile.

When I opened Kies Mini for the first time it automatically downloaded a program update.

Did that happen on yours? If not, don’t connect the phone, simply open Kies Mini and see if it updates. If it does not, see if there’s a menu choice for manually checking for program updates.

      Just a thought.

    • Tigremalo

yes i was getting app crash errors..i actually did the update on a win xp computer.

  • updated my girls with no issue

  • HAOLE-MIKE

I like the update, just a small issue with Samsung taking out the stock Android keyboard as an option. Does anyone know how to get it back? Also, like some others, I can not play Avatar, I don’t really care about that part too much as I am not the type to watch things more than once. When I open from video player it says it has to convert it and then it does nothing.

    • Evos469

you can download a gingerbread keyboard in the marketplace

Well I made a crappy video of the update process and posted it on YouTube. None of my camcorder batteries were charged, so I had to use an old 2005 camera in video mode. End result, most of the video is out of focus. But it does show clearly (in focus) what happens on the PC.

Upgraded today – I have a Mac so I had to do it at work. Download and installing the software took forever but the actual upgrade was quick. Phone is significantly snappier and it’s a big improvement overall but there are a few small issues.

    1) I wish they had not taken out the Android keyboard because it’s the one I was mostly using. I don’t care for Swype and and Samsung Keyboard is a little quirky.

    2) The “Facebook S!” app stopped working completely but now the regular Facebook app works fine (it had been laggy and tended to freeze).

    3) I had the problem where Avatar wouldn’t play after the upgrade but I fixed it by clearing the DRM data and restarting a few times.

    • anonymous

      http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/Samsung-Vibrant/Avatar/td-p/681793/page/3

detailed info on getting avatar to work after upgrade (clearing drm)

Consider this option carefully if you have DRM protected material on your phone other than Avatar. There is no guarantee that all rights can be recovered. It does, however, work for Avatar.

Go to Settings>Applications>Manage applications>All>DRM Protected Content Storage>Clear Data (there is no Cache to clear)

Then do a reboot by pressing and holding down the Power button right the way through the power down dialog, the system shutdown, and all the way until the Vibrant screen reappears. You can then release the Power button. This is the equivalent of doing a power down and battery pull.

The first time you try to play the movie it will come up with an error. Don’t despair. Give it some time and then do another reboot.

Mine became playable after the second reboot, yours may take longer. Remember it is re-acquiring the DRM data from the network so you will need to have an active wireless network connection during this sequence.

      • Anonymous

Thanks for posting this. I did what you said. First reboot said “Sorry cannot play this file.”

        Second reboot, it played.

Someone needs to contact T-Mobile tech support because on other forums people have said they called 611 and no one knew what to do.

        Fantastic post.

If you don’t mind, I am going to post this on my YouTube video.

update worked fine for me using 64bit windows 7. updated two phones w/o an issue. only took about 5 mins each. But at least on one of the phones, avatar won’t play (rights expired) and I can’t send mms messages (tried to send an old photo and after pushing send, it thinks for a few minutes then I get “Error in server response.” At first the gps wasn’t working at all but I ran the “GPSRestoreSamsung” app which reported failure but then the gps seemed to work fine… actually, seems that it needs to get the first lock with wifi OFF after that it will work fine either wifi off or on but it seems to need to be off to lock the first time.

    • jhoff

re getting avatar to play – fix below from anonymous worked for me (clearing drm data and 2 reboots)… tried an mms fix from xda devs but no joy.

Did the update today. Happy with some things disappointed with others. Good stuff – seems faster than Eclair version, like the new text correction feature, and the tethering option. Cons -Yes, Avatar is locked, scrolling seems choppy on some websites and Android keyboard is gone.

By the way, on getting Avatar to work, I had copied the file “avatar.dcf” on to a 16 GB chip and stowed the 2 GB chip in the box that the Vibrant came in.

If you do this, you need to create the same folder on the new chip, so the icon on your Vibrant can find it.

The folder you create is “Movie”

Create that folder and place avatar.dcf into it.

The fix submitted in here, to get the movie working again, it was on my 16 GB chip. So you don’t need any of the files or the 2 GB chip to get the movie to play.

Sidenote: I am playing Avatar as I type this. I forgot how fantastic the movie looks on the SAMOLED display and that the reason T-Mobile included it on the Vibrant was to show off the graphics and display.

  • Sk

Gps problem ( disable wifi,Gps and then press and hold on the power button until it turns off and back on again release the button once you see the vibrant) hope this help also on the avatar movie just go to your setting select privacy then do a factory data reset this should also help to

My vibrant was rooted and I had to lose the user data to get it up and running. It’s no longer rooted, and the root update doesn’t appear to work. I’d love to have my 2,2 vibrant rooted and see what sort of speed I’d achieve then. Anyone have the in on how to do that since the update.zip doesn’t work.

Froyo only updated the operating system mostly, we still have to use the touchwiz skinning that Samsung has used. I too like the 3D scrolling on other Froyo enabled phones.. I recommend downloading Launcherpro if you want more of the “vanilla” Android experience. It’s free, and it gets rid of the touchwiz, and you can customize it however you’d like. :) Hope this helps!

My past experiences with Kies were just HORRIBLE and I never wanted to use it again. Never heard of Kies Mini and was reluctant to use it, but I downloaded it anyway, Yes, that’s how bad I wanted Froyo. I was a little worried that the requirements page said you needed a 32-bit version of Win XP, Vista or 7 and I have the 64-bit version of Win 7. Fully expected it to not work, but the update went off without a hitch (I know, bizzaro world or what?) and I’m playing with 2.2 right now. I can only hope that this is a sign of things to come.

It does caps lock. Hold the caps arrow for 2-3 seconds. It should turn blue with a white arrow.

As others kindly pointed out for us:

In Android Market download the FREE Gingerbread keyboard. Once installed select hen on select it as the input method.

      It’s a fantastic keyboard.

See it here, on my Vibrant:

    Failed.

Kies mini never was able to connect to my phone, even though my phone thinks it’s connected. This may have to do with the fact that I’m running 64 bit Windows 7, and rumor is that Kies mini doesn’t run on 64 bit operating systems.

I get to look at the stupid “Please connect your mobile phone” message for hours, while the phone says it’s happily connected.

At least I didn’t brick the phone.

    Sorry Samsung, you fail.

    • Theref55

It works on my 64-bit Windows 7 Pro version without any issues. Samsung didnt fail on this one. Install was smooth – less than 20 minutes.

      • Anonymous

I suspect that it will work on 64Bit machines, Samsung is being cautious because on some people’s machines it might not work.

Same for the install should not delete pics and video, but Samsung says to still back up files, just to be safe.

Considering there’s millions of different computer configurations out there, it’s amusing to read people blaming Samsung for their problems.

For example, Samsung says on the page to use the cable that came in the box. This is because that’s a quality cable. Samsung knows that USB ports and cheap cables are notorious for failing.

On the ports people get dirt, dust, food, animal hair and all kinds of debris inside the ports. How many people in here have powered down the computer and used compressed air to clean the computer’s USB ports, especially the ones that are exposed and not being used.

And USB plugs and ports are pretty flimsy, they mechanically break down all the time. Doesn’t help when people jam the plug into the port until they figure out it is upside down.

Windows port software (drivers) get corrupted and simply stop working.

USB cables also can’t be too long. If too long the USB port’s 5 volts may not reach the device it needs to power. Same goes for thickness. Cables that are too thick may prevent a full 5 volts going to the device.

Lastly, USB cables are often cheap Chinese garbage. Those often fail to give a solid connection or they simply stop working.

End result, that’s why when friend’s and family call me for tech support I tell people to try a different USB cable, port or computer. (On my main desktop I have eight USB ports. Two of them in the front work and sometimes fail. When I use a quality USB cable, the proper length, the ports work fine.)

Sorry for this long post (not really). I am writing a book and plan on putting this post as an outline in MS Word, in the chapter on trouble-shooting.

Yeah, that’s right, I’m using you all. :)

It’s not a “rumor” that Kies Mini won’t run on 64 bit Windows, it says so on the website in the requirements.

      Specifically:

      COMPUTER

•Desktop/Laptop Computer Running 32bit Versions Of Either Microsoft Windows 7, Vista, or XP

•All Firewall & Anti-Virus Programs Should Be Disabled

•Administrative Privileges Required To Download & Install Software Including Drivers

•An Available USB Port On The PC

•Any Previous Samsung Kies Software Should Be Removed

      and Samsung says:

“Notice: Please back up all data such as your contacts, pictures, music, videos etc… prior to performing the update as data could be lost.”

      http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa/jsp/faqs/faqs_view_us.jsp?SITE_ID=22&PG_ID=2&PROD_SUB_ID=557&PROD_ID=560&AT_ID=341559

People need to follow directions instead of blaming Samsung.

Your workaround, use someone’s 32 bit machine.

    • Mike Delgadillo

I have an 64-bit OS and installation was a breeze.

  • Finally got upgraded to 2.2 but I had to manually flash from JI5 (since Kies Mini kept on saying “Unregistered Device”) to JI6. After a successful flash to JI6 Kies Mini was able to see the upgrade.

My Vibrant’s S’AMOLED Screen looks like it got 10 billion times better. Much sharper and crisper…looks more like an HD Screen. Colors are more vivid and pure, and VERY BRIGHT. I don’t know anything else on the market that can top this screen. Amazing!!!

Updated mines last night runs great. Gallery nolonger freezes and phone seems quicker and data speeds are improved. For those who miss the android keyboard. Type keyboard in the market search and Download the gingerbread KB.

I have two vibrants…one for me and one for my wife. I first tried to upgrade mine on my home computer, running XP. This didn’t work. There was an error with the samsung usb driver. Because of this error, I would connect my phone via the usb cable, but kies mini wouldn’t recognize it and kept the “Please connect your mobile phone” message on the screen forever.

I finally gave us and went to my sister’s house to try on her computer which runs vista. I had no problems with the upgrade on her computer.

When I went home again, I had an idea. Back on my computer, I uninstalled kies mini and ran windows update. I updated everything except for office 2007. I chose “custom” in the updates and there were a bunch of software updates for my computer. I installed them all except for stuff related to office 2007. I reasoned the office 2007 can’t possibly be related to samsung or kies mini.

I reinstalled kies mini and tried upgrading my wife’s vibrant. This time it recognized the phone and the upgrade went well. Thus, I think running windows update was the difference for me…at least on my windows xp computer.

  • ricco

stupid kies thing bricked my phone. i even tryed to do the emergency recovery but even that failed. who knows , now i gotta wait a week to get a replacement. all hell is going to break loose if they charge me for this crap!!!

  • coyboy

first i had mistakenly downloaded the full-blown Kies software which would not recognize the phone. once i had Kies Mini everything worked great.

sadly, i could no longer send MMS, always receiving a server error message in reply. in my attempt to reformat my SD card, i had also wiped out all my stored photos as well (<– stupid mistake on my part, i know) and the MMS would still not function. after digging around, i wound up downloading GO SMS (i read that Chomp and Handcent will do as well) from the app store, and now i can send pics to my contacts. just kinda sucks that i need a 3rd party app to do something so basic.

Any one having battery issues?? My battery seems to drain faster with this new update.

I think its pretty good. I like how we can have wi-fi calling now and the google app too. Although, there is no more android keybored(tear) but swipe isnt that bad.

Over all. I didnt experienced any problems downloading or anything and I like it (:

Besides avatar not working i havent had any problems. Very happy i upgraded, but i have to say that i was a little hesitant after reading many negative post. Very fast. Dont regret a thing.

Just upgraded to froyo 2.2 and everything was smooth, but I did notice that Kies wouldn’t recognize my Vibrant so I tried KiesMini and the same problem happened, so I decided to do an Update on the Kies Mini and my Vibrant was finally recognized and Upgraded with no problem whatsoever. So if you have any problems with Kies Mini make sure it is updated first. (NOTE: Don’t use Kies, make sure you use Kies Mini)

why does kies keep closing on my pc when i connect my phone

  • Maddog6066

i did the upgrade. Getting froyo in through kies was no problem. now that i have test driven froyo on my vibrant, i notice that my phone has slowed down. when i select my gallery, the phone was first making copies of my pics, i had double the pics, and my ring tones kept changing themselves i reset the phone and formated the internal memory, that helped some. its no faster or slower online, the tether feature wis nice, i already had pda net, but the newer flash player, wifi calling and tethering are not worth the new weirdness and slow down on my phone. i’m already looking for a way to change my phone back….so internet is the same speed but everything else the phone can do has been slowed. they say fixes are on the way, yeah right…how long are those going to take, and who will be letting us know. :(

oh yeah…you are only allowed to do the upgrade ONCE…so you cant try to redo the upgrade to try to smooth out the weirdness or slown down. i wont say dont do it, but wait for the fixes to come out so you wont look at your phone with disapointment. :(

I updated my phone last night through Mini Kies and so far it’s fine. I didn’t notice any increase or decrease in performance, but battery life seemed to really improve. I also like the ability to tether through USB or create a wifi hotspot, but I haven’t tried those out yet to see how they work. Wifi calling is a plus too.

Those of you having connection problems, on your phone make sure you go to Settings-Applications-USB Settings and select Kies. Mini Kies should then recognize it, select update and let it do it’s thing. It takes awhile so be patient and don’t touch the phone until completely finishes the update and goes back to the idle screen after rebooting.

  • TGBerman

Alright, here’s how IT WORKED for me.
I searched around a lot because when I first followed T-mobile’s directions (as posted above) windows 7 64bit wouldn’t recognize/mount my vibrant. All the info I saw about this operating system bricking phones while trying to update to froyo was pretty intimidating but, after culling all the advice that seemed to work for others, I had a go at it. These are the steps I took…
    1. register you vibrant with Samsung (if you haven’t already)
    2. download kies mini from the link in T-Mobile’s instructions (again, posted here, above)
    3. install kies mini (you will have to restart your computer) AND THEN RUN IT ONCE WITHOUT CONNECTING YOUR VIBRANT. This updates kies mini to its newest version.
    4. close kies mini and on your vibrant tap settings, tap applications, tap usb settings, TAP KIES. THEN under developer setting TAP USB DEBUGGING
    5. return to the phone’s home screen and follow the rest of T-Mobile’s instructions as they say.

Updated to froyo in about 5minutes with no further issues. Once phone was rebooted and disconected i went back into the phone’s settings; turned off usb debugging and swiched usb setting to “ask when connected.”

Do this and you should be ready to rock. Hopefully you found these instructions so much faster than it took me to tease them from multiple sites/posts/comments.
