I love the new update but just tested my maps & still not working. It continues to say searching for GPS. If it wasn’t for my maps not working properly then this would b yhr ultimate phone. And yes I have all the proper settings in order for gps to work. Frustrating .

    My review (a few things)

    - Bottom line first: I am very pleased with the Vibrant and 2.2 now on it. As some said, it feels like a new phone!
Feature I am most pleased with is the ability to play flash files posted on websites. (Prior to this update our handsets could not play Net video content that was in the flash format, which was most websites.)

    - Update went fine, albeit the procedure took getting used to since we are used to OTA updates.

    - Has anyone thanked TMoNews for alerting us to the update? So thanks TMoNews. But for TMoNews publishing the story I would not have search Google to find the update page (I am not aware that T-Mobile officially told us that the update was available.

    - As far as details, first thing that’s obvious is that there’s improved and additional functionality. For example, I checked out the WiFi calling and tethering. Both worked.

    - GPS works perfect.

    - Avatar did not play: Although I had no desire to watch it (I saw Avatar at the theater, played it on my Vibrant in July, and in December bought the DVD set) when I clicked the Avatar icon, it would not play the movie (even though the movie was still on the microSD card and in the correct sub folder titled “Movie” on the card).

Most helpful was someone in here posted the fix. Performed the DRM (Digital Rights Management) clearing procedure as provided in here, rebooted the phone twice. On the second reboot the Avatar shortcut now plays the movie. Did not watch it though, for the above reasons.

    - “App Updates” works fine. 2.2 has given me notice that 18 apps need updating (I suspect many of those are due to my installing 2.2 and the apps need to address Android’s excessive fragmentation issues).

Warning: On my Vibrant “Update notice” did not show up in Notifications until about 15 hours into having the phone.

    - Fragmentation: annoyingly evident. Those of you who don’t know what “fragmentation” is, here’s an example of it, in a nutshell.

There was a cool “Plasma Globe” game that I downloaded a few weeks ago (A game in concept similar to Asteroids) . It installed on 2.1 fine. But when I tried to play it on the Vibrant a message popped up saying words to the affect: “Your version of Android is outdated and the program will not play on your device.” Clearly the app developer wrote it using Android’s latest code at the time and required Android 2.2 or better to play. :(

On installing 2.2 “Plasma Globe” is the first program I tried since it was the only app that used the word “outdated” to describe my seven month old phone. This time around it worked perfect.

And that in a nutshell is Android fragmentation. Evidence of it abounds in this latest install on my Vibrant; a few of my apps no longer work because the software was written with an older SDK. (Software Development Kit).

Yes, we are at the mercy of Google and app developers. Google because it keeps doing this to us, trickling out Android features every few months so even 2.1, for example, appears outdated; and we are at the mercy of developers because on any apps we like it’s up to the programmers to go back to square one and rewrite the code so their apps work on new versions of Android.

    - Battery life: Greatly improved!! If I keep the display dimmed my battery now lasts way longer, about 24 hours without needing a charge.

    - WiFi and T-Mobile TV: WiFi connected way faster than before. And when I connected T-Mobile TV, it went to MSNBC really quick (one of the few live broadcast stations on T-Mobile TV, and the reason I have T-Mobile TV, to watch MSNBC). Over the past six months I have used my Vibrant on WiFi to watch MSNBC on T-Mobile TV , so I had a benchmark with which to compare.

    - Android keyboard vanished: But “Gingerbread keyboard for the Nexus S” can be installed from Market, for free. It’s a great keyboard. I am using that instead of Swype, for now.

YouTube: I like that there’s more settings, preferences and features. For example there’s a check box to select “High quality on mobile” which means: “Start videos [automatically] in high quality when connected to a mobile network (WiFi).”

There’s also an improved YouTube interface making it easier to one-click and “Save, Favorite, Share, and Copy URL”

Flash: Love that I now have flash in my browser. (Isn’t the iPhone “flashless” and Jobs says the iPhone will never get flash?). Anyway, I reduced my cable TV package (was spending too much on it). So while I get 80 channels, TBS is not one of them. Why does that matter? Well, Conan O’Brien moved his show to TBS. So I was unable to watch it on TV.

But on my computer, and now my Vibrant, I can tune in to Team Coco and watch full episodes. On the phone I simply go to Conan’s website, click the frame that says “full episode,” the video then plays (without commercials).

Also, I can expand the screen so it plays full screen on my Vibrant.

IMHO, getting Adobe flash is big news. This is 1) because not all Android 2.2 handsets can play flash; and 2) the flash-enabled browser now allows me to go on any website and play the site’s flash content, sites such as CNN, Hulu or whatever.

See my YouTube demo here, as an example of what I mean:

Still doesn’t compared to third-party ROMs. Team Whiskey’s Bionix-V is dead-simple to install (easier than this mini-Kies garbage), gives you full access to everything in Android, and if you ever have problems or questions — you can actually talk to the people who make it. Imagine that.

    • Dragoth

I here yah here my friend. I have been running Team Whiskey ROM’s since long before there was a Team Whiskey, back when the Bionix name was 2.1. :) The crapware that T-mobile/Samsung put out is garbage in comparison. The Dev team from Samsung could definitely learn a thing or two from the talented Developers that modify the ROM they deem “worthy” to release.

I just installed it. I had a original rom installed. To be safe I unrooted and removed lagfix. Installed the update and it’s running absolutely perfect. You do have to do a factory reset though. So many force closes at first. Did the Reset and now everything is running perfect. I’m posting this compliments of wifi tethering…. Boo ya!

Followed directions to the T and it bricked my phone. I’m no noob — jail broke a bunch of iPhones in the past so difficult for me to take the blame. Took it to T Mo store and they attempted a ReBoot (something I spent about 6 hours trying the night before) w/ no luck. Said its a known issue and are sending a replacement. Hope it has 2.2 on it b/c I’m not trying this again, I’ll happily live w/ 2.1 until there’s an OTA update. At least T Mo did the right thing

    • Rasolis89

it doesnt . something like this happened to me. just got my replacememnt today. i wonder if it had to do with the fact that i was rooted, cuz i re did it with the new handset and it updated perfectly

Had some of the problems with avatar, got that fixed thanks to this forum. Annoyed with the camera and using gps, hope they fix that. for now just turned off my location so it does not tag. and now the photos and video are in the same folder. hope they fix that too. But 2.2 is awesome and much better. Nice to see the new options as well. I wonder if tmo was not going to release this due to tethering and hotspot.

    • Dragonfly1127

google samsung kies download….try any one and then when done down load samsung mini kies….after that follow the instructions on the tmobil site! VERY EASY!!!

The update screwed up the Alarm function a bit. Now if you create a “One Time” alarm it still associates it with the day. That means if you try on Tuesday 9pm to set an alarm to go off at 6:30am it’s not really set to go off for another 6.5 days — *next* Tuesday at 6:30am and not tomorrow morning at 6:30am.

    • Guest

      Ben is an idiot.

  • sweats62

Let’s get the bad over with. It’ll be a long time before I will take anything I hear from Samsung or T-Mobile regarding Android updates with less then a handful of salt. That experience hurt.

The good: Battery battery battery. I don’t have hard numbers but at a glance I’d say I’m getting 30-40% greater battery life. The whole experience is smoother and quicker than ever. The video experience is more slick (used to experience hiccups but no longer).

Then there’s the Android keyboard, or the lack thereof. I’m more of a Swyper, but my wife was plenty upset about the missing Android keyboard. I downloaded the free Gingerbread Keyboard for Nexus this morning. Mine force closed once then no problems. My wife had experienced zero problems and is estatic.

I updated my phone a couple hours ago, the only issue I’m having is the accu weather widget is gone and I can’t seem to find another one I like. But other than that everything’s great! Been waiting a couple months for this update so I’m pretty happy!

  • Nkylieb

Battery life is great! Is the portable hotspot suppose to show up since its the Froyo?

You have to go under your setting and go to wireless and network.

I absolutely love it! I tried the Mobile AP and it’s wonderful. Battery life gain is significant. Fixed the GPS bug [actually it really wasn't bad before for me!] and the Gallery lag is gone. And THEN I rooted my phone and now it’s even more awesome.

Well…..let’s see, what errors have i had since applying the update…hhhmmmmmm. 1. most of the time my phone does not ring anymore, even if the volume is on high. 2. GPS still does not work. 3. listening the voice mail via bluetooth does not work. 4. System performance ha gone downhill ( ihave all the same apps as before, even taken some off and clear the system cache). That’s it for now, will post more later. But this is a bad start for me…….I won’t be buying Samsung again…..and thinking about leaving Tmobile…too many issues!!

    • elij

I know it should have been solved in the update but it wasn’t. My GPS had troubles right after. Have you tried the GPSRestoreSamsung from the Market? Fix for GPS on froyo, solved my issue.

      • Tbird7090

DUDE You’re a lifesaver. Fast fix. It works folks.

  • Tedhaber

Exchange support from the stock email client no longer exists. The stock Android keyboard is missing. The upgraded Market regressed to an older version. I had to tebuild all of my carefully tailored home pages.

    Not really thrilled. Very disappointed.

    • Matt

      My exchange works

  • sweats62

I already weighed in but THERE’S MORE!! Tethering? Who are we kidding here? I use my WiFi to power up the internet on my phone. Why would I want to use my phone to give my laptop intenet for crying out loud? I’ll tell you why. Both my wife and I are taking internet courses. Yesterday we both had posts due in class forums. My DSL modem died at about six last night. Vibrant to the rescue. Got the posts off. Sure it was slow (EDGE) but our grades are intact. I’m sending this post on a Vibrant powered internet right now (stores don’t open for a couple of hours). Good stuff.

    • Tbird7090

I could only get mine to tether the first time after upgrading to Froyo 2.2 then not again. Went crazy with other apps till I found out I’d have to root but now found Klink. BINGO. No rooting & it connected within 10 min. of installing on phone & my computer.
Yes I have to use USB but I would anyway for battery’s sake since I want to be able to use the phone while online as I tested & found I could that one brief time I tethered after the upgrade.
I’d appreciate any tips on how anyone is tethering after doing a full upgrade because I’ve read that as soon as you do, T-Mo shoots down the ability somehow.
Meanwhile it looks like Klink is the way to go.
