Will The Sidekick Ever Make A Comeback?

I know we could be reading entirely too much into this but when pinged last night on Twitter with a question regarding the future of the Sidekick line, @tmobile gave the above response. They could have answered in a million ways some of which would have raised suspicion and others which would have hinted that there are no current plans to continue the Sidekick line. So I stand by the notion that we could be reading far to much into this but its an interesting answer that at least in context seems to give a glimmer of hope that the Sidekick line isn’t dead and will be resurrected in one form or another.

What was thought at once to be the Project Emerald phone, as we know turned out to by the myTouch4G. We haven’t heard a peep about the rumored “Sidekick Twist” in months but perhaps it’s time we do a little more digging.

Thanks Andrew!

This is a very interesting article.
I’m only 18, so yes, i was in the era of sidekick when they were geared towards the “teen crowd” even though adults got them too (never understood that)
But i have had the sidekick ever since the Sidekick ID came out and i Loved them.
If they decide to bring the Sidekick back it should have:

    Android 2.3
    1420mAh-1750mAh battery
Front facing camera and a 5megapixel camera with auto-focus and flash
It should have the same keyboard as the previous sidekicks have had because it has been the best one i have ever used (besides my bold 9700)
Screen should swivel, i mean that’s what the sidekick was known for.
    between 8GB-16GB of HD Space
Of course ability to moves and install apps to SD card.
maybe a slightly different form factor but if they choose to keep the same form factor, id be fine with that.
4inch touchscreen (TFT, AMOLED) whichever is better in sunlight and for the colors.
    microSD card slot
    HDMI (optional)
    Must have 4G

if they make it like this or even better, id be forced to hold off buying my Nexus S and keep my Motorola Cliq until this comes out :D, but T-Mobile should bring the Sidekick back, it was great, i’ve had them from the ID till the LX 2009 and they came along way, why stop now? There will always be competition with cell phones and smart phones (alike and different), they should make the Sidekick just like every other phone out there wit the specs above, of course it’ll have its differences, limitations etc… but T-Mobile shouldn’t quit.

and a 1GHz processor (snapdragon? hummingbird?)

      • Amarty92

and ofcourse wifi (b/g/n), bluetooth 2.1 or if they get to 3.0.

    • Amarty92

720p or 1080p HD video recording

    • Eskokali

U should tmo up with ur wish list. it sounds super sick!!!! I’d buy it. My fave sidekick was the slide.

    • Magenta Magic

So basically it should be a Vibrant or MyTouch4G. Got it… I think TMo could put something like that out. Oh wait… they already did… sorta. :)

    • Christianjohnson05

sk i.d that really shows ur age, i had all but stopped at the 08, never had the i.d, ur specs are cool but isnt going to happen, get a G2 if u were a sk loveer thats what most of us did with the g1 and others went to bb. the sk ha its run i ont see people buying iit now just cuz the name, its just too playedout, most people arent phone nerds so specs dont sell them on a phone but ads do, and seeing sidekick back seem 1ike it wi11 work

  • Realdeal1205

Ok people a new sidekick wouldn’t be a sidekick if it ran stock android. But if they don’t mak a whole brand new sk os, then I just they can come up with a os the runs android and has sometype of sidekick os on top, like moto blur, htc, lg, touch wiz does on android. But it would really have to be marketed hard, and made very well, cuz bbm pretty much killed aim, which made the sk what it was.

  • Eskokali

After they let moto put their spin on the sidekick, the Sidekick Slide, I was hoping that they would continue to let others put their own spin on sidekick. Can u imagine what Samsung or HTC would do to it?

    • http://www.facebook.com/ElectroHop Jay Alford

HTC would’ve nailed it to wall. Period. It would’ve been something over the top amazing. Maybe even LG. I can definitely see myself saying “Oh well, I have an HTC Sidekick.” Man, that sounds nice.

Well, still…the point is that it’s there xD It could become something extravagantly amazing!! ….. one day lol. Hopefully.

In my opinion (as much as I hate the skins) a vintage sidekick style skin over an android framework would be ideal. Preferably the original style with the screen over the keyboard then swiveling out. Since I could see the sidekick falling more into the “not quite a smartphone” smartphone sector I’d say a processor along the lines of the G2s, not a snapdragon or hummingbird or anything too extravagant. Just for the love of god don’t try to “Kin” this thing.

I think if they used the original sidekick form factor it would be great because I feel the swivel with full keyboard underneath is what really made the sidekick the sidekick.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ElectroHop Jay Alford

I think it should have amoled display and bring back the SK3 style keyboard =]

    I hate slow news days.

Doesn’t matter what it is. All T-Mobile needs is a good marketing team to push this.

They need some very good looking teens or young adults in a high school or college setting (you know the cool kids) showing these off.

Then they intro the product as the Sidekick Comeback. haha

But seriously, make it look good, make it powerful and convince users that they NEED to have this or feel left behind the curve.

I think T-Mobile needs to stop with all these budget family type of commercials. We’re over that now and we know there are much much cheaper options than T-Mobile out there. If ATT and the iPhone proved anything is that people will pay more (even in a bad US economy) for the coolest device even if the network sucks.

T-Mobile should hire the agency that makes ads for Verizon. Give us commercials that are edgy hot and powerful. Show off the 4G network and make people want to use you for offering something better.

  • Asdfjkl

it just needs to be as powerful as any other tmo flagship device.

We need some fresh news David

    • http://tmonews.com David

You are telling me, its been way to slow for December, this month should be happening but T-Mobile released all the good stuff back in November. Should all pickup during CES and January!

i thing your doing fine with the news

sidekick should team up with google, and make a sidekick running on android os

  • http://twitter.com/fugitivealien Phil Sowers

Android is the successor to the Danger Sidekick platform. It was founded by Andy Rubin who is now THE Android mobile OS VP at Google. If you keep the name it should be an Android phone with the super features, max megapixels, video out, front facing camera, but i think to keep the Sidekick feel it has to have a 5 row keyboard, D-Pad and/or Rolling ball controls. =)

  • http://www.facebook.com/ElectroHop Jay Alford

The Sidekick is, in my opinion, by far THE BEST qwerty phone to date [except for the Sidekick Slide/2009 LX] It was perfect. I never understood why they put 2 sets of number pads on it though lol. The buttons weren’t big, and they were’t small. Aesthetically, the Sidekick was just a comfortable phone to hold period [unless you had to call someone and didn't have a bluetooth lol.] I personally loved the SK3 keyboard over the LX, it just looked cleaner. The swiveling screen shocked people because it was something nobody has ever seen. I was an avid Sidekick user and switching to the MyTouch Slide was a rough…rough move lol. I swear, if another Sidekick comes out [hopefully manufactured by....HTC....or LG...hmm] I would hop right back on it. We need the Sidekick back, unless T-Mobile gives us an amazing Android 2.3 phone with a front-facing camera 4 inch display 1ghz processor amoled display 1650 battery and 5 row off set keyboard =] I’m just saying. We WANT the high end T-Mobile. Get it? WANT WANT WANT! We don’t like the low end or mid-range…we want high end. HIGH END! Verizon is high end…why can’t you be high end, T-Mobile? Please…just why. You love your customers right? Make us go crazy over your phones. Not “blah..whatever…at least it’s an Android…” No…no no. We wanna say “WELL GUESS WHAT PHONE I HAVE! HA! YOU HAVE THAT THING CALLED AN IPHONE! AND ITS ON TEEEEMOBILE! HAHAHA! Sucker.” We wanna brag about your phones…..but, your not letting us. It’s makes us sad pandas….very, sad pandas.

David please find out if your ninja’s have any 4G expansion news for 2011. That info will be hot.

T-Mobile still has NOT committed to over-laying their entire GPRS network with 4G. They really should do this in 2011 and just get it over with already. Find someone who can get them on record saying whether they plan to do this or not.

Besides the 4G software installs someone also needs to get Ray Neville to give us an update on actual backhaul expansion too. It seems like every tech journalist out there fails to ask these types of questions when I read their interview articles. All we get is fluff. I live in a “4G,” area but still only get sub 1 Mbps download speeds everywhere. That’s unacceptable.

Verizon has already stated when they expect to have their entire US network LTE ready.

  • lotek

Please Please for the love of JeBus let the SideKick die in peace. The tech on those phones are obsolete and there are so many more worthy phones that deserve my money. An investment in the SideKick brand is a step backwards. That stupid ass antiquated tech that made you store all your phones info on a server, a pain in the ass if you have any damn phone problems.

    • http://twitter.com/Wicked_1 Ronnae Dominique

Um, every phone nowadays has you store your data on a server/cloud. What do you think all the google sync apps are? Danger was ahead of the game, in terms of cloud computing and backup. And all your data wasn’t on a server.

  • To626n

Ahhh yes the SK3 was my first smartphone and I thought it was so awesome. Loved the keyboard, swiveling screen, all the little sounds it made when you perform a function, the simplicity, and the overall phone design itself. My current phone, MT3G, is better in every way but somewhat boring in comparison. It’s also a lot more sluggish even though it has a much faster processor. I would love to see T-Mobile come out with a new SK based on Android but with a Danger-esque theme. Keep the keyboard and swiveling screen, make it thinner, 5 MP camera, and touchscreen of course. The build quality on my SK3 was impeccable so it would be great to see Sharp make future Sidekicks.

  • http://twitter.com/jasonamarshall jason marshall

I sure hope not, the Sidekick was STUPID!

  • http://twitter.com/Wicked_1 Ronnae Dominique

I loved the sidekick, but it was surpassed in terms of specs, features a long time ago. Still has the best keyboard hands down though, the SK3 keyboard, and will always love the swivel. I’d consider a Sidekick branded Android phone or even Windows Phone 7. The Danger OS is outdated, and needs to die. And considering Microsoft bought Danger, anything they will make will be WP7+. T Mobile owns the name “Sidekick” though, so they can release anything and call it a Sidekick

You mean to write “far too much” not “far to much”. Your way does not make sense.

IMO, the sidekick 3 was the worst SK as far as build quality was concerned. it was very plastic-y and unstable, at least the one i tried out for a week, it creaked worst then an old shack and the screen wobbled like jello, the software was fine otherwise. the SK2 had better build quality hands down and lasted me up until the slide had come out when the GSM radio died on me.
IMO the best build quality was with the 2 LX models, and the best keyboard was the one out of the slide, which was pretty much a better version of the keyboard in the SK3.
the rubberized keyboards felt nice but didn’t last with heavy use.

i agree that the Danger OS is too outdated to update, it would be much easier and FINE to just put android on it. a sidekick overlay (like sense) would be pretty nice but i don’t think it would add enough to be worth it, it would probably slow things down a lot.

If it has motoblur i probably won’t get it, if it has anything to do with microsoft i will definitely stay away forever.

TThe sidekick was dead all of them all the cameras was garbage. A track ball really. It fell out. The bumpers wouldn’t stay on horrible battery the lx was the best one oh 9 to be exact. But it would need. And dual core processors 1080p video recording. A 8 megapixal wit Carl ziess lens. Hit Sammy for the super amoled screen 1gb of RAM. Front facing cam 1.3 mp xenon flash too and a 1800mah battery. 3.5mm head jack no keyboard unless its from the oh 9 lx red back lights on it

  • To626n

    Quick Question,

Can you still add a sidekick plan?

I was doing a quick search through amazon and they have a nice inventory of refurbished Sidekick 3G’s for $89 (no contract). I’ve always wanted to see how the last Sidekick was like and at under $100 I would try it out if the plan was still available.

  • Noe71richard06

“At&t plans to the Sharp FX, the latest device from the Sidekick brand of messaging phones, after rival T-Mobile pulled the plug on the line earlier this month.” That was dated July 19, 2010 on Mobiledia.

    • Noe71richard06

      oops, meant plans to sell…

  • Lwrm

Don’t ever lose the swivel screen, or the dedicated number row on the keypad.

Touch screen with a virtual keypad might be nice.
    Flash
    better apps choices
    Gingerbread OS
    Front facing camera/ video
    Syncing for T-mail and MobileMe
Tigher key spacing than the 09 LX

IF this Tmobile still “Deaf Friendly” to deaf customers.. strong suggest to add ZVRS, Sorenson, Purple to Video chat.

U said this Sidekick 4G is new generation from old generation of Sidekick B/W to Sidekick 2009 XL.
