T-Mobile Plans Lots Of 4G For CES

With CES just days away the wireless industry is all abuzz with 4G this and 4G that. While most of the attention is on what Verizon might show off, T-Mobile is prepped and ready to outline their own 4G path to HSPA+ 42Mpbs.

Senior Director Engineering Mark McDiarmid speaking to the Wall Street Journal stated that T-Mobile will “unveil its plans for the faster network in Vegas and added that the technology will be integrated into smartphones next year.”

Furthermore, T-mobile expanded on their interview with the WSJ with an additional statement on what else we can expect at CES:

“T-Mobile is big on Android, big on faster 4G speeds and big on 4G devices including tablets…we will continue to drive innovation on these fronts in 2011.”

Our speculation is high that we will see plans for HSPA+ supported tablets and an expanded lineup of HSPA+ supported handsets.

What would you like to see T-Mobile unveil at CES?

Anything made by HTC that runs on Android, IMHO.

How about a truly unlimited data plan?
What’s the use of a faster 4G if you are just gonna finish up your 5GB faster?
And goes back to 2G speed?

    • Anonymous

I agree but I think we have a cap so low because we are straining the network but we might see the cap raise back to 10gb’s or actually true unlimited once the upgrade goes through because devices won’t be capable of 42mbps until technology advances, Qualcomm seems to be the only ones making HSPA+ processors and everyone else is on regular HSPA processors so I think the data cap will be eliminated next year.

      • Anonymous

I have to agree with you, JBrowne. To add to that, it’s already known that Android uses and hogs more data than other phones out there. Android users bog down the network that is why all these service providers including T Mobile are capping usage. I don’t think capping is a bad thing; it’s good. Some people may not realize it because they’re greedy. But customers will ALWAYS have a PERPETUAL growing demand for network/internet usage even as providers increase their speeds and better their networks. It will be a never ending cycle to a point where without caps, customers insatiable “appetite” for more data usage will surpass the providers capacity and/or quickness to meet demands.

i never go over 5 gigs because im always connected to wifi the reason they put caps is because they rather you use wifi then there network i use about 3.1 gigs a month if i didn’t have wifi i would go over

While I agree that would be nice, I’d much rather have the cap in place for the time being to avoid congestion on the network. The cap will more than likely be increased/removed in the future, possibly when we start getting the 42mbps speeds, but to remove the cap now could put us in the same boat as AT&T. Only with better pricing and a much hotter spokesperson.

    how about the iphone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The whole iphone thing is really getting old! If you really want one there are 2 simple solutions; get an unlocked one or go to AT&T.

I know right… how about the iPhone?

        1. I don’t want to buy an unlock iPhone.

That would not be a good move for T-Mobile, even if they managed to get the next iPhone on launch. Just let iPhone users stay on AT&T. T-Mobile should continue to focus on Android and Windows Phone 7.

All I know is that I enjoy the competition; I enjoy new technology too, and cannot wait to see what T-Mobile has up their sleeves for the upcoming CES. One thing – the new CEO has done more in a short period of time than the old one. So it’s bound to be good. Looking forward to it.

Definitely a new HSPA+ device, one that will be able to handle 42mbps. Hopefully the G2 and MyTouch 4G will get a Software update enabling them to use higher 4G speeds. I wonder if they’ll make a MyTouch 4G Slide (Eventually, not a CES unveiling.)

    • http://www.facebook.com/MatthewSki Matthew Kalinowski

no i think that they will only be able to get the 14.1 because the chip it has cant support anything higher just like the hummingbird can’t support 14.1

      • Anonymous

That’s correct. It’s a hardware limitation. However, no one is currently seeing 14.1Mbps in the field because traffic slows down the network, but when the network is capable of 42Mbps, then we might get the full 14.1 out of our phones. And the thing is fast at 4-6Mbps, so 14 will be blazing.

I would like to see HSPA+ WP7 handsets.

  • Wilma Flintstone

I’m hoping to see some Meego HSPA+ devices at the Tmobile booth. At least one Meego Superphone and one Meego Tablet. The Superphone on Meego should be at least 4 inches with great specs. If I see some Meego Devices at CES on Tmo, I’ll be upgrading from this HD2 to whatever device is running it. Here’s hoping for some Meego at CES on Tmo.

    • http://tmonews.com David

Are you going to CES just to find this? I know how much you want it :-)

      • Wilma Flintstone

Haaa!!! You know it!!! I wish I could go to CES. What are the requirements (if any) to get access to CES?

Have you checked out the progress of Meego on Youtube? It’s Phoenominal!!! It’s going to be in cars as the In-Vehicle Infotainment UI, it’s going to be on Tablets as the Tablet UI, Smartphones as the Smartphone UI, Computers as the Netbook UI, and more. All of them look great already too. They’re on youtube if you’d like to check them out.

Also, I love the UI of Moblin and how many different ways they’re planning to use it. It’s going to be great but I do agree with Matthew, there will be bugs but I’ll be ok to adopt that early because of the support it already has so the bugs will be worked out quickly. Can’t wait!!! Come on Tmo, bring some of them Intel Moorestown Meego devices on over here. :o)

I hope it’s a Motorola device. A good Moto device like the DroidX, not like the Cliq/XT. Motorola makes great hardware and I like what they’ve done on Verizon. It would be nice if they’d give another carrier something other than their mid-range cast-offs.

Give me a G2ish device….just add an amoled screen….and MAYBE a FFC….but quite honestly….If the dell venue was android I’d be falling in love right now. It’s the perfect device. 4.1in screen, samoled screen, full keyboard, sleek design, solid build. Don’t get me wrong…i’ve used Windows Phone 7 and I REALLY REALLY like it….but I have to admit that RIGHT NOW….I like android better

An announcement that all T-Mobile companies across the world will allow free roaming and mobile to mobile with each other.

Or we could simply declare the new CEO of T-Mobile USA the first Lord and Master of the World since he seems to do a hell of a lot more in a short period of time than any politician does in their entire term.

  • thereugo

I hope the G2 will be capable of taking advantage of the speeds that are being rumored to be on Tmobiles.

    • beastly

The G2 caps at 14.4 Mbps.

  • Tyrone M Jackson

I’d rather T-Mobile start supporting its existing Android phones and issue all of the OS updates it has promised.

  • Henry

I know this is a lil out there but a way to tweak the iPhone so it can use 3G on tmobile I’m not asking for 4G just 3G ^_^

    • beastly

An electronics engineer might be able to do it by installing a radio with T-Mobile’s AWS frequency. But I haven’t heard of anyone actually doing it, and I’m guessing it would be pretty complicated and not worth the effort. The problem isn’t software, and it isn’t a T-Mobile restriction on iPhones. The iPhone was built to only be able to use the 850 and 1900 mHz frequencies, and T-Mobile’s 3G (and 4G) network is built on the 1700 and 2100 mHz frequencies.

Why not try an Android? You might be pleasantly surprised.

I’d still prefer the N8, but any Symbian^3 device would be good for me, so long as it could do UMA (Wi-Fi Calling). I’d accept a WebOS 2.0 phone that could do that too. Really hoping T-Mobile’s Wi-Fi Calling feature continues to spread beyond just Androids and Blackberries.

        • Droid

I AGREE WITH THIS. T-Mobile needs Nokias. T-Mo gives us some Nokia. At&t gets them, why not us?

True. Thats basically all I talk about. I really want a 4.3 inch Meego with 1080p video (which it has already been shown to be capable of), FFc, HSPA+, SD Card slot, TV Out (through HDMI preferably) gaming at 60fps (which also has been shown possible on Meego – quake ran at 100fps) and more. That Intel Moorestown Tablet on youtube has me drooling already. I’m getting that tablet. The in vehicle ui is looking amazing already and more. Nokia really need to drop some high end Meego devices on Tmobile. Can’t wait to see what CES has in store for us TMo Customers.

I don’t know if you’d want it. Battery sucks major ass and it gets super hot after a few minutes using the web. If you want it… $450. It’s only 2 says old. There was a update just a few minutes ago. It said for bugs and new Google maps. Blah. I’ll sell it to you on eBay, if not I will return this Monday morning.

I can use that money for a Nokia N8 instead.

As far as a better phone goes it doesn’t matter if the coverage isn’t there. What T-Mobile needs to do is also expand their coverage for their 3G service as well. Their coverage is not as large as the other 3, and while haveing the fastest 4G sounds good, it don’t make much sence to have that and not be able to get service in rual areas as well.
