Motorola Cliq 2 Breaks Cover, Arrives January 19th

Well that was certainly fast as images of the Motorola Cliq 2 surfaced just hours after the release date hit our inbox. So far we’re a little underwhelmed by the look of the device so lets hope what’s under the hood impresses us. Internal specs are still a mystery other than a supposed 5 megapixel camera and Bluetooth 2.1. We imagine that Wi-Fi calling will find it’s way into this and other future Android devices but as for the type of Android it’s running, that’s another mystery. Three more pics follow, they’re a little small but you get the idea, I blew them up a little so I apologize if they are a little grainy!

This is seriously a joke! The only way I can see buying this phone is if you can’t upgrade or don’t want to sign a contract and it turns out to be less than 300 without contract. You have to have the same data package with this phone as any other android phone, so you’re not gonna save any money there. The Vibrant will be free with contract and most likely g2 and my touch 4g at the point of this phone’s release. The click is one of the most frustrating phones to use, the response time is terrible, it is as laggy as phones get. If you owned one before and you have any self respect you won’t buy this phone. Huge mistake! I cannot believe Tmobile is taking a chance on it.

I saw a couple of people arguing for this phone’s release. Can you please explain your reason for getting this phone, other than something general like “give it a chance” or “not everyone wants a high end phone”. If you pay the same price for a high end phone as you would for a low end phone, why choose the low end? The low end phone does the same things, just slower and worse than the high end.

      • Anonymous

Keep in mind that we don’t know the internal specs or software version yet. If Motorola puts the same processor as the Droid 2/X in this, and launches with minimum 2.2.1, then you might have a winner on your hands. The Cliq was super low-end, laggy, took forever to get a software upgrade, but almost no one complained about the build quality. Physically, Motorola makes a good phone. My old CliqXT got better signal than my MyTouch4G and had a way better external speaker. If this thing gets the proper specs, then it could easily compete with the G2. If not, then they will sell less than a thousand units overall and never make a Cliq again,

  • http://twitter.com/BiGMERF Marvin Feliciano

please you would have to be a fool to buy this after the way they treated the first edition

  • http://twitter.com/cscprince Ansel Hicks

Hmm, it looks nice, but I wish it would’ve had an FFC. That would’ve made it very tempting to consumers to purchase it…well, if the rest of the specs are up to par to some other high end/mid range Android devices it might be a good successor to the CLIQ…just gotta work on those updates Motorola…

  • Anonymous

Ooh, that’s different. I have the DEFY now and the performance is great especially when overclocked (easily) to 1200MHz. Looks like it will ship with FroYo too.

Best of all the keyboard looks extremely tactile like the original CLIQ, one of it’s high points.

  • Wilma Flintstone

Nice. That is one really interesting keyboard though.

This one… looks.. coool, and thin..ish. If it had an 800Mhz processor.. and free for upgrade I’d take it.. otherwise I’m pulling out my own cash for an HTC; probably end up buying my own every other year. I think it’s a 3.5/3.7 in screen.

  • Anonymous

If you know better you would not buy this phone after not getting updates to the first one

  • Moose

With the experience I’ve had with the original cliq (which I’m stuck with for another year :|), I’m definitely not getting this one…

I work in a t-mobile store and a customer brought me this phones like 2 mounts ago

    • timmyjoe42

Why is a customer bringing you the phones? Aren’t you supposed to sell them to the customers?

      • Shawn

Haven’t you ever been into a T-Mobile store? Anyone who knows anything about Android knows more than the reps do! I asked one if the Vibrant had multi-touch when it was first released, and his response, “what is multi-touch?” lol

        • Jason

Just because one Rep doesn’t know terminology doesn’t mean the rest of us don’t. Reps are very well trained…in my market at least.

        • smh

I work with a rep who is closing in on his one year anniversary and still can’t activate a stand alone prepaid kid. He is completely useless.

TMO should yank MOTO from their lines, and stick with HTC.

really? arrgh…can’t Moto make anything “driod-like” for t-mobile. instead we are stuck with spaceship looking moto devices. imho, this one is….eeeeeeew. i was hoping for something that looks so much better, that can compete with sister “droid” phones from Vz. ugh!

That would be awesome. I’m sure that VZW has some sort of legal stronghold on all the moto droid like phones though.

Hopefully if they are consistent with updates and fast. If fast it beats Samsung. If Consistent is Beats Motorola. That is.. as long as they have astounding hardware. But HTC will reign King.. forever; at least in my book.

  • Wicked1

Like I just wrote on androidcentral-Never again. I don’t know why TMO is releasing this phone. They probably will get some new customers/non-tech people to buy a few, but I don’t predict good sales. Motorola has lost the trust and confidence of Cliq users, those who gave their verge-of-bankrupt selves a chance w Android. Most who bought the 1st, will not buy this one. Almost all phones have a certain # of defective units in a model but the Cliq had/has way too many. I had a Cliq, my cousin and sis had 1. I just got a free G2 after having to request 3 replacements in 1 week; my sis had to get 4 replacements, now she has a Defy after they gave her a Crackberry, then Charm. They would not give her a MT Slide or G2, my cousin is on her 2nd replacement. Everybody I know who has/had the Cliq had problems with it. Even if this phone doesn’t have all the problems, I have no faith in Moto and am not interested. I will admit that I do miss the customization of Motoblur, but I’m not sorry I got rid of it. The design is ugly, that keyboard is hideous, they should have kept the D-Pad, that’s 1 thing I miss.

  • Solo Artyz

Oh gosh! Please tell me this is a joke! Ashton Kutcher come out, I know Im being Punk’d! You mean to tell me that they are actually going to try & make another one? I just upgraded to a wonderful HTC G2 from a CLIQ, which was one of my worst phone experiences. These photos show this supposedly newer device running the same android 2.1 that the first CLIQ just barely got upgraded to! They cant even give a descent Froyo build when Gingerbread has just been released & people are already gearing up for Honeycomb even! I’ve owned a couple different MOTO devices, even before there was a such thing as Android, but after my experience with the CLIQ I will never in life spend a single penny on any Motorala product. I strongly recommend that you don’t not wait up for this phone & when it comes out, to purchase something else no matter what type of spec numbers they throw out there. I’m loving every minute of my experience with HTC!

    • http://twitter.com/Pistol_Pat M. Patrick Ortiz

My favorite part was when you mention a show that has been cancelled for years. As if the Brand behind this is playing a joke on YOU! They wasted thousands of dollars to design a product that was aimed to please only YOU!

In sales most people will teach you the “K.I.S.S.” method. Keep It Simple Stupid. This should apply to any future comments you make from this point on.

      ..Punk’d?

why does t-mobile keep getting such poorly designed phones. this phone belongs in a prepaid box a walgreens.
couldn’t it be a bit more professional looking like the droid/droid 2?

    • Anonymous

You’re acting like no other company gets poorly designed phones. The Droid line consist of high end Android Devices. This is OBVIOUSLY not a high end device. Like other companies, t-mobile is coming out with high end phones and lower end phones. Take a look at other carriers and be AMAZED at the lovely selection of POORLY designed phones.

      • Andreyzhilchuk

point is its ugly. as is the mytouch 4g.

  • http://twitter.com/j_nathaniel Jason

It has to be embarrassing as a company when the buzz about your upcoming products always seems to be about how ugly it is and how bad the last version was.

    • Anonymous

I’m sure VZW doesn’t have this problem.

  • Chatter

Most of the people posting here (most, not all) are happy with their phones (G2, MT4G, Nexus etc) and are hating on a phone that isn’t even out yet! Come on people – relax a little. It may shock you but not everyone is looking for a high end phone. If this is anything like the Defy, it will be a very nice addition to the TMo line.

You have a right to comment anyway you like but lets temper things until we actually know more about this device. If rumors are true, there will be 23 more devices for you to buy (or hate on!).

I’ma hate on it before and after it comes out. I’ve got no reason to hate on the Defy but this thing is the reincarnation of a trash phone. Of course low end phones are needed but would YOU buy or recommend this knowing how the Cliq turned out?

    • Anonymous

    • Rob

Completely not true as a cliq owner who only just switched to the nexus s there are plenty of people that were stuck in the same boat i was with a shitty outdated device. The Cliq was promised an update in April. When moto finally upgraded to 2.1 in November it was horrible. Beyond buggy and by the time I got the Nexus unusable, so much in fact that I downgraded it back to 1.5 for my brother. Now my brother is dealing with the touch screen failing. For him any freebie smart phone was better than none so he’ll deal with it.

Not everyone is looking for a high end phone is true, but you cant compare this to the rugged defy. Motorola and other companies need to be honest with their customers. If they are going to take forever to upgrade their handsets because they put their shitty Custom UI on it then be honest, not lie to customers for almost a year about upgrades.

    • Nscarroll08

I agree not everyone is looking for a high end phone but Tmo has yet to bring out any high end Android phones. The G2…. Meh!..Mytouch….. Meh!…When will we get something Droid or Evo like? I mean really? i want a high end phone that looks like a high end phone. The G2 is decent but NO ONE was talking about it and it didn’t get nearly as much buzz ad the Evo and Droid phones.

  • TimmyT

I work in a retail store and I just don’t see ANYONE buying this unless it’s priced really low. But, that hasn’t worked out so well for the Charm either…

    • Jason

The Charm was a horrible idea, that’s why nobody bought it. Customers still want an android w/ a slide out keyboard though so this will get a lot of action. And this will probably be cheaper than the G2 unless the specs turn out to be on par w/ it.

  • Yetanothermoto

This is Moto. Whatever version of Android comes with is what will remain on this device. We all know Moto only bothers to update its premium “Droid,” line while everything else gets left with 1.5 or 1.6 for eternity.

What is up with that ugly turtle shell cover?

    Motorola design team slacking again.

  • Anonymous

This should be avoided like the plague and I see it as my mission to spread epic FUD on this device. I assume all past and present CLIQ (& Behold II) owners will not hesitate to join me.

It’s time that an economic example is made of manufacturers who clearly neglect their Android device customers, or worse, stringing them along with empty promises, as Motorola has done time and again.

May I suggest specifically pointing people towards HTC devices since that company has been (relatively) the most attentive to their devices as well as open to their modification from stock, while Samsung is more or less as guilty as Motorola on leaving customers behind and making their hardware unnecessarily difficult to personalize.
