T-Mobile HSPA+ Really Fast Says Root Metrics

T-Mobile has been saying that its 4G HSPA+ network will boost speeds across the board regardless of whether or not the phone is capable of the full speed.  So Wireless testing firm Root Metrics decided to put that to the test and found that the speed boost indeed was noticeable across the board no matter which device.  In a sample of six markets, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Oakland and Orange County, California T-Mobile was around 400 kb/s higher than the competition.  However, AT&T did manage to edge out T-Mobile in Oakland but just barely.   Testing took place during the August and September months and shows a stark difference between this year and last when T-Mobile was often third or last among the four big competitors.

How long T-Mobile will stay on top is anyone’s guess as Verizon prepares its own 4G LTE launch and Sprint attempts to reclaim the crown with Wimax. T-Mobile won’t sit on its hands though as HSPA+ speeds are expected to double to 42 Mbps next year.

T-Mobile reaches 6,000+ kbps here in Vegas.

Montgomery, Al 8+ mbps in some areas… this amazing me because Tmobile (CS) claims that not only do they not have HSPA+ active here but HSPA 7.2 isnt even avaliable in the area yet? (Mytouch 4G)

      • David Reyna

I was hitting 6+ mbps in Raleigh today with speedtest.net, I have it over 10 with mobilespeedtest.com

        • Anonymous

I use the FCC’s mobile speedtest application…. its the FCC, they cant be wrong :/
But seriously tho, speedtest.net app is also rather accurate but as you can see, mobilespeedtest.com is just always wrong. Whats amazing to me tho is that when i go up the street, literally a block in a half, my speed changes from 7-8+ mbps to around 600kbps – 1.56mbps and it never fails.

        • Anthony

Are you sure your WiFi isn’t on when you are testing at home?

        • Anonymous

          yeah….i’m pretty sure….. i mean i am in the car when i test so…… :)

but yeah man, i’m not using wifi it just kills me that around the corner from our current home (we are buying a new one this December) they have such a boost in speed and we (my family) doesn’t. I can’t really explain it.

  • Mr Tibbs

im in Westland Mi 10 outside of Detroit and my 3g sucks it takes forever to load and please dont be in a car cause i can never get anything to download unless i stop the car come on t-mobile get it together

I’m not liking this Disqus thing at all. Takes too much to comment and reply.

On topic though, I haven’t seen speeds over 3mbps here in Atlanta Georgia. I’ve heard that Tmo is having to go through hoops to get more towers up down here so maybe if they getthem, the speed will be what it should be.

    • http://tmonews.com tmonews

pretty much in the heart of Atlanta. Downtown area. I’ll run some more speed tests and see what happens.

        • Wilma Flintstone

that was a reply to Johndouglas. How it ended up there I don’t know. I have to spend some time with this and learn it for the mobile. I like the new look on the desktop though.

    • Doss

I was getting 5mbps about three weeks ago, just outside of ATL in Mableton on a myTouch 3G. Can’t wait to get there this weekend and see what the myTouch 4G is gonna do.

    • Johndouglas1975

I am on the southside of ATL. (Peachtree City, Fayetteville, Mcdonough, Lovejoy) I constantly hit between 5-7 mbps on my Vibrant. Where are you at?

  • Allantoss

its true… i experienced fast load when i checked this page using my blackberry bold 9700. im glad i have numerous towers around me.

  • bmg314

Yeah, I was in westland, now I am in west bloomfield area, and the coverage is worse. I hover between Edge and GPRS. I did a speed test one day and the dl was negative, if you can believe that.

My crappy Cliq XT is averaging about 4.5mbps here is Phoenix. Coverage is spotty but most of the time it works well. Can’t wait until I get the G2!!!

  • GMAN

I got the G2 early this month and have yet to use the new network, was hoping I would have it being in the Pasadena, CA area. Do I have to go to Downtown LA to try it out?

  • Emet12345

Chicago doesn’t have 4g…I don’t care what they say…I have checked in every part of city ..north,south, west, east….and no 4g. Rarely ill get anything over 1500 kbps download and 500 upload.

    • Garet

I get 5mbps on regular basis in Hammond right outside of chicago and have gotten the same when I was in Chicago a few time.

    • Midwest monster

I have a mytouch 4g I get about 7mb/s sometimes 8 I have tested this in humbolt park, melrose park, cicero, and midway areas hspa+ Is here in chicago change your sim card that might be ya issue

      • Mike

7 or 8 SOMETIMES is not good enough. My buddy has mytouch 4g and his AVARAGE speed is 1.5 mbps, so not 4g (he hits 7 mbps sometimes)

        • Emet12345

That is my point….thanks Mike sometimes is not 4g.

        • Midwest monster

not every phone will benefit from the 4g speeds.yes it might increase their speed a bit but nothing drastic…only the mytouch 4g and the g2 are design to get these speeds so far..i also went from a rooted nexus to the mytouch 4g and its alot faster incase ya do the same I suggest get new sim and have t mobile change ya internet from android web to the mytouch 4g web because it does make a difference I’m in chicago and can’t complain at all this thing is fast!!

        • Marcelo L

Even if your phone doesn’t have HSPA+ support, every HSPA phone is SUPPOSED to feel a marketed difference because HSPA+ back-haul handles traffic better…..if people ( and I’m one of them ) aren’t experiencing HSPA+ it’s because the roll-out has been SPOTTY. I’ve been EVERYWHERE in Miami…and there isn’t ONE place that someone could show me that’s consistently ( or even close for that matter ) there is a solid HSPA+ signal.

When you have SOLID HSPA+ in an area, then say….yeah, I have HSPA+. That’s my beef. What’s your excuse

        • Midwest monster

C’on guys! you guys are just nit-picking now..i have had just about every smart phone since they first came out from dynoberrys, pda’s,iphone etc(from different carriers). until now I am very pleased with the data speeds of course there is always deads zones..have you seen sprints wimax”4G” coverage map? Atleast t-mobile is not charging you them xtra $10…. in Chicago so far so good and I have been everywhere if that’s not your case replace your old sim..check your defective phone..and make sure you have the right data plan for your device..

        • PHONE FREAK

I thought he said he gets 7 and sometimes 8. Not that he sometimes gets 7 or 8. There is a difference.

  • Rosario Lopez

Im glad Im not the only one who agrees that Chicago does not have 4G. I mean, my speeds are faster then they were on my TouchPro2 (that thing was slow, even at 3G speeds which I rarely got) but there the same as they were when I first got my G2, back in the end of September. They supposedly flipped the switch last month but I havent noticed anything. For now Im gonna chuck this up to the fact that Im using my old sim card from almost 5/6 yrs ago. But I plan to get a new one any day now and hopefully that will bump up my speeds.Again, Im not saying my data is really slow or anything just that I havent noticed the increase I should.

    • Emet12345

Will not help….I did it and it did not help. I will not buy any phone until they are consistent I will keep my nexus till then. It’s the towers not the phone’s!!!

I live 5 blocks from a 3G tower…and I get CONSISTENTLY get bumped to EDGE on a Tower that’s 8 blocks away. And that’s with 3G Preferred…and even then……when I’m literally….right across the street from the tower……it will bounce back and forth between HSDPA and UMTS…..

I’m like….hello…I’m RIGHT HERE…in front of you….and you can’t keep me on a 3G channel ? Something wrong with that..

    • Marcelo L

“They supposedly flipped the switch last month but I havent noticed anything” –

Yes ! Precisely. When I heard they had turned on HSPA+ in Miami, I said, “You Lie!”. In this case, it was deserved. I don’t get speeds even approaching what some of you say you get in places like Vegas, and such. HSPA+ coverage that covers 2 square blocks is not enough to say, “We have 4G !”. Even around a meet and greet some of the Miami Heat players touting their new 4G service and sponsorship of the Miami Heat, I tweeted back to @TMobile…..”You better check your coverage…because that location you’re touting for your 4G bash…..they only have EDGE in that area…” ( or something to that effect..I’m paraphrasing.

There are huge areas around SoFla that all you can get is EDGE ( and I don’t mean in the sticks either ).

@Rosario Tmobile rep here and Im feeling ya on the chicago not having 4G. Im getting non consistant uploads between 1mbps and 3mbps in downtown chicago. If my phone is capable of 14.4 (Mytouch4G) then at least give me 7 or 8 mbps for christ sake! My Vibrant gets 1 to 2 mbps so I would expect the G2 I sold and the Mytouch4G to do wayyyy better. I’ve tried everywhere, Logan Square, downtown, lakeshore, southside, wrigleyville, lakeview, lincoln park, evanston even! Our laptop in our store with the rocket attached will say 3G sometimes, then H+ on some other days, very inconsistant. I mean I know the speeds are fast in some places, but no one has called out Tmobile for not providing data speeds even close to what they are trying to represent. So yes, while some people are getting 8mbps downloads, why would anyone say thats ok if the product they are buying is representing 21mbps (rocket) and 14.4 mbps (G2/mytouch4G)?? Is there anyone out there getting 14mbps on there 4G phone or Rocket?

Chicago does have 4g, i have mytouch 4g and im always on H. No matter where i go even in northwest indiana i have H.

    • Mike

that H doesn’t matter, daily speed test and consistency in those 4G speeds that’s what matters.

    • Anonymous

The H is the new 3G. No matter where you go, if that area has 3g services available in that area, then you will still have a H. whether it is 3G (1-3.6, 7.2, 14.4, 28.8 etc.)

H just means you are on HSPA (3G), not necessarily HSPA + The network indicator wont change between the two ever.

      • Ted C.

        Funny… it goes between E, 3G and H on my G2

        • bmg314

Then you have a very unique G2, Ted, because the rest of them do not have a “3G” indicator in the notification bar.

I’m not sure if the TP2 and the HD2 have different speed capabilities due to their overall computing power differences but on my TP2 a year ago, I was able to hit about a max of 1.5Mbps outside my house. With my HD2 these days, I hit about 4.5Mbps. Here up in Gburg, MD, right outside DC.

  • Fury2g

I get 4-5mb/ In Milwaukee on a regular basis. I’ve hit a peak of 8.4mb/s twice.

I’m in the Phoenix area, have an HD2 and am always tethered with both cable and WiFi Router to my laptop, check several times a day thru Speedtest.net, since they through the switch a couple of months ago I have been averaging between 3.5 – 5.5 Mbps daily. Several days ago I was hitting 8-12 Mbps only for the afternoon.. I figured they must be fooling with the network and has not happened since… Been with TMo for about 6 yrs and it’s finally paying off !! Lets see what the next big jump will be, sure will like to see what this network will do when we have the 42-86 Mbps phones and backhaul in place…. waiting patiently….

no i dont think you will see 4g till t-mo pushes out lte im not saying hspa+ isnt 4g its just what i think there going to do to show where ur using there lte network or there hspa+ network thats the only reason i think they used the h and not 4g. make sense?

  • Chris

4G is only the AIR interface. So from your phone to the cell tower can get upto 21Mb, but that is in perfect weather, right under the tower, when no one else is using it in the middle of the night. The real issue with speed is the backhaul. Most of T-mobile’s network still uses T1 lines. So if you have 8 T1s then the total pipe is 12Mb wide. Now, once the Ethernet backhaul has been implemented, then you will have 100Mb, and even 1000Mb bandwitdth available. That is when you will see speeds upto what T-Mobile claims. Verizon and At&t are launching their LTE 4G using Ethernet, so they will be faster right off the bat.

    • pnapoli

Actually Chris you got it backwards. Most of T-mobiles network (in the south at least) is on a fiber Ethernet backhaul and ATT and Verizon are not. I know this because I work in the industry and have see only 2 cell sites in my travels that ATT or verizon have Fiber installed and About 80 percent of the TMO sites I have been to have Fiber. And LTE is not 4G just as HSPA+ is not 4G. And Verizon and ATT so called 4G will not be ready until the end of next year and by then TMO should be up to 42Mbs by the end of the summer so either way TMO will be faster and they will be trying to catch up. not to mention there are no LTE devices out there to use yet.

You benefit from HSPA+. Your phone’s maximum download speed is 7.1 mbps, so if you’re in an HSPA+ area you’ll hit closer to that max (or cap out). 3G tends to operate at 600kbps to 1mbps, depending on area.

hey i have a g2 and i noticed the tethering and mobile hotspot is an option ithe settings, not a seperate app. i callled tmo about this and they said since its stock android its free tethering. i tested it out and i didnt get a text from them saying i need a plan. and my monthly bill is still the same :)

I have a strange suspicion that either this feature will be locked down soon so you have to get tethering, or that you’re one of the lucky people who doesn’t have to worry about the lockdown because you got your G2 at the right time.
