T-Mobile Formally Officially Announces the myTouch 4G

It’s been a long time coming now but T-Mobile has officially, unequivocally announced the myTouch4G as the myTouch4G. We’ve gone back and forth on this name for a while and it’s made for some interesting conversation on Twitter and the comments not to mention a few editorials popping up around the interwebz regarding T-Mobile’s use of the “4G” name.

As expected the phone will drop November 3rd for $199.99.

Plenty of video and hands on below as T-Mobile held a special event for the press (invite only apparently, guess another event they must have lost our invite too) so check out the goodness!

The T-Mobile myTouch 4G is the latest addition to T-Mobile’s exclusive line of Android-powered myTouch smartphones. Designed specifically to deliver today’s 4G speeds on T-Mobile’s rapidly expanding HSPA+ network, the myTouch 4G will offer customers blazing fast access to websites, applications, videos, downloads and more.

The myTouch 4G is expected to be available in the U.S. exclusively to T-Mobile customers beginning November 3 for $199.99 (after a $50 mail-in-rebate), plus taxes and fees, with a two-year service agreement and qualifying voice and data plan. The myTouch 4G will be available nationwide through T-Mobile retail stores and online atwww.T-Mobile.com.

The myTouch 4G will also be available nationwide beginning November 3 through select third-party dealers and leading national retailers including Best Buy, Costco, RadioShack, Sam’s Club and Target. Pricing may vary at independent dealers and national retailers.

You can visit http://mytouch.t-mobile.com/ for more information about the myTouch family of smartphones, including the myTouch 4G.

Nice! If nothing else, the case it comes in is way cool! Looking forward to getting this bad-boy next week! :)

    • Bimmerz

The biggest problem I am having with the MyTouch is… which color should I get? lol This will be my next phone, and then will become my backup phone when my super-phone comes out next year! WTG Tmo!

And special thx to David and his crew, for keeping us in the loop with the MyTouch. Which I gather hasn’t been a real easy task to do, there’s been so little on this phone (until now), you guys have done great with what little info has been out there – thx! :)

    HERES THE LINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/27/the-playstation-phone-is-still-real/

sorandkairi first put the link up.

    • David, Managing Editor

This really isn’t relevant to the topic is it?

      • http://google.com 5!n7 is my name upsidedown

2 me it is cuz it going out with android.

The Irrelevant part is that it will carry gingerbread(android 3.0) and sonys own market place making it a 3 in 1 (android os, some Sony os, and PSP functions) smartphone.

Do you know if engadget is a trusted source?

        • David, Managing Editor

Is Engadget a trusted source? You’re new here right?

      • http://google.com 5!n7 is my name upsidedown

About smart phones not at all, but with upcoming phone news that isn’t being approved by the actual store, YES. I was a bit hesitant about believing u guys but then all the phones posted on your site came out! So i do know engadget but I heard someone saying that mostly all specs are wrong with them and some phones never came out so IDK. I just started searching for my perfect big screen phone last month.

      • http://google.com 5!n7 is my name upsidedown

Hey DAVID, do is engadget a trusted source?

        • David, Managing Editor

Yes, they are very trusted…they are the biggest tech blog on the planet and a very trusted source.

      • TmoReader

David, you just got trolled. You would save yourself a lot of time by just deleting these comments. They have no importance to the matter at hand and just take time away from our awesome editor.

    • blah

Yes we saw, and ironically this phone has BETTER specs than the PS phone…. The same exact processor but 768MB RAM as opposed to the PS phones 512. For a gaming phone why would i downgrade hardware wise especially when they will likely just release the PS store to all android phones anyway and sell a BT controller add on and make billions..?

    • David Thomas

No, this is very irrelevant. The common factors are: They’re both a phone, and they both run [some version of] Android. Also, this is old news by now. The specs on that phone sucks, and the software might even be worse.

      • http://google.com 5!n7 is my name upsidedown

        Do you work for SONY?

then im not sure how much u know since SONY is one of the best elctronic brands out there except its new in the making of smartphones.

      • Foxeh

Sony Ericsson have been making smartphones for quite some time, I assure you. Either way, this is not a T-Mobile story nor a myTouch story so it’s irrelevant.

I’ll humor you anyway as it is an Android device said to have a chip that could allow it to land on any carrier.

I’m not sure how excited I can be for this one to be honest with you. I found the battery life of the regular phoneless PSP to be insufficient as it is and then we have the problem with regular smartphones having to be charged constantly if you game on them AT ALL. Then we look at Sony’s track record for keeping their Android phones up to date. The Xperia X10 still hasn’t been updated to Eclair yet while Froyo has been out since may and Gingerbread is already standing on Google’s lawn.

And then there’s the issue of pricing. Unlocked smartphones aren’t cheap and will Sony Computer Entertainment of America really be willing to make the individual tweeks to please every carrier (a la Galaxy S) for subsidies or will it just come out unlocked at a straight 599 US dollars?

I’m sure Sony has all of this in mind and that they may find ways to alleviate most of this, but I’m not holding my breath quite yet.

Was at a local Tmo store in Tampa. Got to see the phone in black. Has an expensive and very solid feel to it. The pictures don’t do it justice. Very thin also I thought. The black color part has a rubber (only word I could think of) feel to the grip, not cheap though very nice. Spent about an hour in the store with the rep. Had the Vibrant, G2 and G4 running side by side. Took pictures and video, accessed web pages simultanteously. Have to say in many cases the Vibrant performed the best. Tmo rep did not like the Espresso Sense UI that comes with the G4 compared to the Vibrant. The color is really hard to beat on the Vibrant though. I’ve had a Perl 8100 for four years and finally going to upgrade. Really like the BB keyboard (9780 ??). Ah such choices!

    • yourboyfriendthinksimhot

Plz tell me the name of the rep who was helping you I want to make sure they get trained properly.

      Comparison is VERY easy:

MT4G-4G speeds + Android 2.2+ Flash and Zoom during video + Front Facing Camera 1ghz Snapdragon

      G2 – 4G speeds + Android 2.2+ Flash during video 800mhz snapdragon

      Vibrant – 3G speeds + Android 2.1 + No FLASH AT ALL 1ghz hummingbird

I hope it helps you to know that these 3 phones go for $500 at full price and $199.99 after rebates w/2 yr contract & full discounts.. its COMMON SENSE that specs alone the myTouch 4G wins in every direction and I’m not even started….. KEYBOARDS are over and done with! And blackberry is dead and buried. Get an Android already!!!

      • http://google.com 5!n7 is my name upsidedown

Since your comment makes it look like you work for tmobile…………

lol. I would love to do that but dont want to just waste my upgrade, nor do I have enough money to do all that.

Does this have a dual core processor?

    • Bimmerz

No. We may not see a dual core on Tmobile until 2011 (Q1 or 2?).

  • mike jochem

Now I thought I remember something about them doing instant rebates and gettin rid of the mail in rebates when they started making it mandatory 2 have the web on ytour phone for the length of the contract. So now we still have to wait for the mail in rebate and be locked in to the web feature. It doesn’t affect me to much because I’ve had the web feature on my phone since the hewlett packard hpaq. But I feel if I have to be locked into an additional feature then I should be gettin additional perks such as instant rebates imho

  • http://robert.aitchison.org Robert Aitchison

I’ve heard that it has the exact same read only flash security that the G2 has so root, and by extension custom ROMs may be a long time coming (or maybe even never will come) Can you imagine being stuck with Sense? (shudders)

I like how TMO _never_ posts the real prices of the phones when they make these announcements, just the penny-wise-pound-foolish “subsidized” prices. At the same time they advertise their Even More Plus plans to demonstrate how inexpensive they are, of course people don’t figure out that they can’t have a reasonably priced phone and an inexpensive plan at the same time until they are in the process of buying it.

I think the “4G” in the name is pretty weak, since regardless of if it’s as fast as _todays_ 4G phones it’s not using 4G technology. I have no problems with them saying it has “4G speeds” in their marketing material but this is essentially false advertising (though I don’t doubt that it would be defensible in court). On the other hand it also would have been weak if they called it the MyTouch HD and since it lacks an HDMI port. They should have called it something else entirely.

    • grazapin

And I hope people have stopped saying that the 4G stands for the 4th Generation of MyTouch phone. I really only need to point you to the MyTouch 3G to demonstrate the flaw in that logic since it was the 1st Generation of MyTouch.

      • http://google.com 5!n7 is my name upsidedown

        NO! thats completely wrong.

actually remember the original MyTouch that had no headphone jack?

meaning that the 3G was the second.

But all in all, you were going the right path.

    • mackye

      @Robert A.

Geez Robert. Why do you have to be such a party killer? Sense is great for a lot of people, and 90 percent of buyers probably don’t even know what root means. WiMAX isn’t true 4G either but yet Sprint is using that name, so why can’t T-Mobile do the same?

The 4G name is VERY strong, not weak like you said. People will see the “4G” and will make them want the phone even more. You need to put yourself in the shoes of a general cell phone customer.. Who doesn’t care if it’s real 4G or not. Why? Because they account for a huge chunk in who buys these phones. T-Mobile knows that, so they market to those people. They just want to make as much money as they can just like anyone else.

      • http://robert.aitchison.org Robert Aitchison

Sure Sense might be fine for a lot of people, but there are other things that can be said for a lot of people which I won’t get into here ;)

Obviously the term “4G” is a bit murky but IMO WiMax has a much better claim than HSPA+ does. I’m sure they will get away with it though, it’s similar to so-called “Synthetic” oil, almost none of the oil you can buy in the U.S. that’s labeled as “Synthetic” could be sold as such in Europe, the very term “Synthetic” became more of a marketing label than an actual attribute, and 4G is kind of the same way.

      • http://google.com 5!n7 is my name upsidedown

        @robert a.

No you shouldn’t bring up a car compared to a phone!

And about your comment, “synthetic” oil is the best kind of oil for a car.
If you use REAL oil, your car is bound to last about 10-20 years compared to others using “synthetic” oil will last 50+ years because real oil starts removing the protective coating and eventually kills the engine.

So that actually benefits the brand in sales!

        And the car.

      • http://robert.aitchison.org Robert Aitchison

Not sure where you get that data but cars rarely last much past 10 years anyways.

In any case my point was that the term “Synthetic” as it’s used in the U.S. as it applies to Motor Oil is not really an accurate descriptor and that almost all of the oil sold as “Synthetic” here would not be able to be sold as Synthetic oil in Europe.

I think it’s a decent enough analogy to TMO calling this phone “4G” despite that fact that by almost anyone’s definition it is a 3G phone.

Just like the “Synthetic” oil sold here is really just a highly refined conventional oil the MyTouch 4G is a really advanced 3G phone.

      • http://google.com 5!n7 is my name upsidedown

robert, my dad has a camaro from 1987 and hes used it ever since 4-6 times a week. Fully synthetic oil from the start and the car barely gives any problems for its age.

        • David, Managing Editor

          NOT RELEVANT, FINAL WARNING!

    • blackrhin0

They are very clear not to say “it’s a 4G phone”. What they say is “4G speeds” – which is technically true, even though 4G refers to an arbitrary collection of features.

Speed is what people care about anyway – we are not going to see a carrier-independent 4G system in the U.S. for quite some time. Vendor lock-in is part of their strategy, which 4G defeats.

    • thereugo

Weeks back I remember you saying that you were going to get the G2, did you? If so do you like it? What about this phone? what do you think. I’m probaly going to get this for someone. What happen to the Glacier? I’m with Tmobile and I would like an Android phone should I wait til the beginning of the new year? Oh yeah have you heard anything on the TERMINATOR from motorola?

      • Bimmerz

@thereugo; This is the Glacier, just didn’t come with all the rumored specs that were floating around about the Glacier. This isn’t to say that Tmo won’t get a super-phone as the Glacier was rumored to be, but I doubt we’ll see it until sometime in 2011. So the wait continues…and I’ll be getting this one, until it does! :)

    • SPA

If you do your research, you will find that NONE of the US carriers current network technology is technically “4G” as stated by the institute that defines 3G,/4G standards T-Mobile currently has the fastes network speeds of any carrier here in the US so, if Verizon and Sprint can call there not really 4G networks “4G”, why shouldn’t T-Mobile? The speed is all that matters. I don’t think that they ever anticipated getting 14-21 Mbps out of 3G when the standard was defined.

  • http://Tmonews Dabe

Hey David… how much do you think the optimus t will be off contract

    • David, Managing Editor

Let me see if I can find out, don’t know off the top of my head, i’d say upper 2′s.

      • http://google.com 5!n7 is my name upsidedown

Depends how much it is with the contract.

They always discount 200-300 so add that to the contract price and thats the no-contract price

  • Evan

So, they have wifi hotspot, but you have to pay to use it. Am I correct with that statement?

    • Bimmerz

It’s my understanding to use “Tmobile’s” tethering app, you have to pay $15 per/mo. There are other tethering apps in the market you can use for free (PdaNet, and EasyTether).

  • alex32g2

bgr has a bunch of photos of all 4 colors of the phone, check it out

  • Christina

WOW!! this phone is looking nice every day! so can’t wait! just wish they’d show the plum colored mytouch.. now seeing the red one makes it harder to decide???

    • Bimmerz

Having the same problem! I cannot decide between the black, white or red. From the pics and vids I’ve seen so far, these are the 3 color choices I have it narrowed down to. I haven’t seen a very good pic of the purple/plum yet. I guess I’ll decide when I get to the store and see them in person.

  • Whodatfever

What is the price without upgrade? $499?

  • the bandit

I want this phone, really REALLY want it, but I’m wondering if in the next few months a bigger screen, physical keyboard version will come out… any thoughts David?

    • http://google.com 5!n7 is my name upsidedown

      I know.

All I want is 4.3+ screen.

I prefer no physical buttons but the dell streak on tmobiles HSPA+ network would be the best phone for me for the next 2 years.

      • somebody

at that rate you will never buy anything… every 5 months or so something better comes out so you just gotta dive in

  • Androidless

Looks like a nice device. Could someone explain to me why I would want a Genius button rather than the standard search button?

Right now, I am still holding out for the G2 with Wifi Calling.

    • http://google.com 5!n7 is my name upsidedown

you can’t command a search button to make a call or send a text without pressing more then ONE button.

      • Foxeh

        Actually you can.

If you long-press the search button on a stock Froyo device (G2 and N1), you’ll get the voice search which lets you send text, call contact, navigate to, listen to, etc.

      • ktwist

@androidless don’t worry the G2 will get wifi calling and mobile hot spot soon with an update, this from a htc rep.

    • Androidless

Hmm. Seems like the Genius button is completely useless.

    • davidohio

Do you know what the genious button does? You don’t have to use it.

      • http://google.com 5!n7 is my name upsidedown

THen make that as a video to win the 4G!!!!!!!!

LOL that would be real funny

  • duhh

Its just disingenuous as Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T…even with their next gen network forklift they will not meet the ITU definition of 4G.

  • J1

This phone makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside(Like a schoolgirl with a crush on jason beiber) lol.. I’ll def be picking up the red for me and plum for the mrs.. Now that i’ve decided on a (phone)color i just need to make up my mind about which case i’ll be sporting(maybe even two)..

Wiseone posted this link on a previous thread.. But i decided to re-post it here,so all us drooling over this phone can have all the demo vids on the same thread.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_07jFz5L5o

  • Jazz

That Matrix live wallpaper is kinda annoying.

  • JDubs

Does anyone know if the trackpad doubles as LED? In the unboxing vid it looks like there is a small green LED notification light blinking in the upper left… couldn’t really see it that well though.

    • Bimmerz

I noticed that too, and wondered if that was the notification LED. Be cool if the track-pad lit up while ringing, or as a notification.

      • JDubs

Yeah I would love if the track-pad lit up… either way I hope that LED light is brighter than on the video. I’m still rockin my G1 and I love customizing the LED color so you know what type of notification you received without turning the screen on.

  • Andreas

Woohoo… I just received the official email from T-Mo, that the new MyTouch 4G is available on November 3rd… But they haven’t update their website yet… just a few more days… Plum for my GF and the Red for me…

  • redman12

I wish the Samsung Galaxy S has HSPA+, the phone is crispy! I saw it in action today!

  • JP

    What? No Pre-Order. That bites.

  • Craigers

I went to my local T-mobile store today and asked if they had received the working demo. Yes they did and he brought it out for me to look at! They didn’t have the wifi turned on and it didn’t have an SD card, but everything else was working. Amazing, just amazing. I compared it in size to the Vibrant that he brought me. The actual viewable screen is just a bit smaller than the Vibrant. It is heavier than the vibrant, which is nice because the vibrant feels a little lite and cheap to me. I must say that the pictures we have seen do not do the phone justice. The phone looks a lot nicer in person. The rep also had dummy versions of all four colors. The red is much more vibrant than the MyTouch 3G red, but I must say I am leaning toward the plum. All in all an amazing phone! I told the rep I would see him bright and early next Wednesday.

  • Jrsykind

Any idea if/when this will be available for buy one get one free 2 yr upgrades?

    • yourboyfriendthinksimhot

As of now, NO it won’t be part of the buy 1 get 1.

  • JJ

I have to admit after watching the videos, this thing looks a little better than I anticipated. I am still within the 14 days on my second G2, I REALLY need to Wifi Calling and am getting tired of switching my Sim card at home every night to my BB Bold 9700. I didnt see any mention of the WI-FI calling David (only the tethering).

Do you know if this phone will SHIP with the Wifi Calling working David??? I really want an OTA for the Wifi calling on the G2 but I know it isnt a “guaranteed” thing and I am getting a little impatient already.

    • tipsofme

Both the demo and the manager phone came in today with Wifi calling preinstalled and fully functioning. The hotspot works AMAZING also. I had it connected to a laptop that was 20 feet away from the phone and it was still down loading at 3mbps and uploading at 2mbps!!!!

    • Craigers

The one I played with at the store today had WiFi calling set up.

  • Will

I want to see the size comparison to the Vibrant.
Odd I know but for me I want to see it lol

    • dnice711

Come on david, at least give us your opinon, do you think the g2 will get wifi calling?

    • Craigers

that’s exactly what I wanted to see. I had the chance to set them side by side today at the store. The Vibrant is larger, but not that much. The viewable screen is a little smaller on the MyTouch 4G, but not much. The Vibrant weighs a lot less.

  • mofo

this phone sux i tried to root it and it doesnt root at all, same as g2 atleast i an root my vibrant and have a 3200 quadrant score

Stupid customer loyalty. Ever since it was tweeted and posted on facebook that his phone would be available on Nov. 3rd, I have called customer loyalty to find out what will the upgrade cost be for me. They claim that they do not have an official statement or pricing for the phone. But Yet, the stores have received both. WTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know I can’t get this phone cheaper at the stores than what I can do with loyalty. again I say, WTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • E

How do you get ahold of costumer loyalty? Is it just another branch of t mobile costumer service.

      • http://google.com 5!n7 is my name upsidedown

        I know right?

what is customer loyalty and how do you get ahold of them?!

        Can DAVID help?

        or any one?

  • =D

Anyone knows if the boot up time for this phone is the same as the boot up time as the G2? I searched it in youtube but only desire Z shows the fast boot not G2, so i’m not quite sure…

  • dnice711

phone looks cool, but i really want wifi calling for the g2, david have you heaard anything?

  • Moving to Android

    DAVID.

Any news on BlindType and if the new mytouch will be able to get it whenever it is released? This phone looks pretty amazing and BlindType seems to be the future of touch screen KB which would make it even better!!! Thanks in advance!

    • Bimmerz

Had to Google this, looks cool! I love Swype – but I could see BlindType giving Swype a run for its money. Wouldn’t mind having this as a choice on my phone as well. Since Google just bought out BlindType (or acquired it, we should see it soon).

nice handson the ffc looks kinda crappy, the one one on my itouch 4g appears to have better FPS rate

  • CoCo

@ Jl – Tired of reading/hearing people complain about customer loyalty… Feel lucky Tmobile even let’s you whine and complain till you get “special” pricing. You should feel lucky you even get a discount on phones in the first place. Thank you for making us customers look bad…

    • jl

@CoCo- I didn’t want to come of as complaining only that the information that’s in the store “isn’t posted in the corporate system” is the way that it was explained to me. When the G2 came out, there was a pre-launch pre-order blah blah before the date the phone was released. Here, it seems like in order for me to get the phone right away, I would have to go to the store. I guess I’m tired of carrying around this dang jail-broken iPhone.

      • http://google.com 5!n7 is my name upsidedown

        AGAIN, what is customer loyalty?

  • Davo

oh yeah baby!!! This is beautiful! Would I need the $30 data package?

    • Bimmerz

Yes, I think so. But check with CS or whoever you end up buying the phone from, to be sure.

      • Davo

        Thanks!

    • sandytoes

You would actually need it. Any smart phone requires the plan. Unless you have like an old grandfathered plan offer which is 24.99. I usually ofllfer it to my customers. It will only show up if you’re upgrading though. Good luck! Btw we’re not supposed to offer it so don’t be surprised if the Reps tells you its no longer offered when in fact it is.

  • im a noob

    thanks 2 any1 who answers
if i reach the 5gb cap will they charge me more or jus change my speed?

    • Robert

I think the answer is just throttle you down so the phone becomes unusable till your next billing cycle.

    • Bimmerz

Throttle you down to Edge – you can still use the phone, just at a lot slower speeds.

  • phonegeek

yea this phone is beyond sexy this should be my next phone unless there is one coming out with vanilla but honestly the mysense is a nice ui makes me smile as i see my way into the “matrix” lol

What would have been cool if T-Mobile could have bought some air time and debuted the MT4G during the World Series, here in San Francisco.

Sprint must have paid a fortune because seems like there was an Evo commercial every other commercial spot. All I kept hearing was Evo, Evo, Evo.

Sprint said “Sprint, first 4G phone, Sprint a phone with a kickstand to watch movies” on and on and on.

    • mtnman

I really wish that T-Mobile had the advertising dollars that the big 3 had. Then maybe you’d see more comercials. But alis perhaps with all the changes at Tmo they just might step up their advertising.

  • mobo316

Hey David, when are you going to release info on that samsung android phone????

  • smash-mode

Does tmobile do one year contracts??

    • http://google.com 5!n7 is my name upsidedown

yes but plans are about 20-40$ more expensive and phones are the full price less 100 dollars, compared to 300 discount on the two year contract.

But I don’t see y you wouldnt keep tmobile.

Ive tried all four major carriers and Tmobile has been the lest expensive and with almost the best signal quality.

  • http://google.com 5!n7 is my name upsidedown

Hey DAVID, do you know if the SAMSUNG TAB will have a 3mp or 5mp camera?

cuz on an earlyer post it said that it would be with a 5mp but now videos say its a 3mp.

  • mtnman

Well I’m not gonna have the cash on hand untill income tax time. But rest assured that when taxes come back I’m picking this thing up.

  • mtnman

I’ve wondered how fast my Vibrant will be once it gets the Froyo 2.2 upgrade? Will it match or beat the MT4G speeds?

  • Ansel

    This….right here…is my phone….all the carriers…want my phone… everybody…pay…attention…this…right here…is my…myTouch swag, myTouch swag…

    • DatNizzle

Can’t wait. I’ve waited a long time to upgrade from my jailbreak’d iphone. Just a nice all around device. Wife’s gonna want this too. Anyone interested in in a N1?

    • http://google.com 5!n7 is my name upsidedown

I am but I live in california

  • paul

Any1 know how to get a upgrade fee waived.

    • http://google.com 5!n7 is my name upsidedown

Its about 18 – 30 bucks. But Make someone In the store your friend. or If a friend or family member works there, you’ve got your wish come true.

You can always try instead of making a friend making family!
      XD

  • Life

I love tmonews no homo mytouch 4g here comes me and the wife ..time to get rid of our unlock and jailbroken iPhone 3G

  • Vibrant Guy

I never will never understand why people do this. You are crazy to buy this from someone on here..lol

    • ItsMichaelNotMike

What’s interesting about that eBay listing is that person might not even have the phones, he is just listing them on spec. If someone pays him for the preorder he will take the money, but the phone, and pocket the extra $300.

  • Wilma Flintstone

definitely would get the red if I were getting this phone. Red looks sooo identical to Magenta on it that it may as well been called Magenta.

  • phonegeek

wow watched the vids twice .. really dont know what color to get red or black my MT3G is black ( with froyo .. i love Froyo’s enhancements its had, it makes 1.6 looks like garbage) but maybe i want to go with red this time hmmm

    • abel2fresh4u

im thinking black or white. the white one is looking sexy. im kind of tired of having black phones. anyways on nov 3rd i will just put the black and the white one side by side. even tho i think white will win the battle. lol
