MyTouch HD Makes An Appearance

Now, I can’t say that this is a live appearance because sadly it’s not, but it’s a video appearance nonetheless.  Kent German of Cnet was able to grab some video of a (turned off) New T-Mobile MyTouch (MyTouch HD in these parts).  This video will give you a great look at the hardware and give you a feel for the size of this phone.  I, for one, am glad to find out that this phone isn’t entirely plastic.  Now, what can we do about that genius button and (possible) custom UI?  We will have to wait a little while longer for some good live videos of this MyTouch (I can’t wait!).  Leave your thoughts in the comments!

Can’t wait to pick one of these up. This will finally be a worth upgrade to my Nexus one.

    • foxhound2185

      Exactly what I was thinking.

      • Ace

Yep HSPA+ with a little bigger screen but not huge which I like and FFC only thing I need before 100% it if it gets Cyanogen cause I know this is coming with espresso

      • stricken23

Won’t be able to root if this has the same hardware anti-root as the G2. Very disappointing BTW.

  • Special K

The phone seems solid to me. Can’t wait.

  • HD2/Vibrant/G2User

This g2 is freaky fast. I’m looking forward to this as well

  • Cybersedan

    I am IMPRESSED!!

If nothing else with a bigger screen is on the horizon at the, this will be my next phone.

  • mtnman

I’m gonna pick this one up, I just wish the screen was on so I could see it better as far as features.

  • tmoOWNED!

    Yeeee hawww!!!!

  • SnakeEyez

Wow, IDK about any of ya, but that sure seemed like it has a solid build. I’m loving the Metal back and even though I hated the white/silver before, in a video it, it looks much better. Can’t wait to see the black version of it.

  • annonemp

David we live in different times. Not everything is built out of metal like in the old days. Have you seen some of the newer cards? lol. J/K!

This phone looks pretty good. The only thing that would make it perfect is stock Android but since there’s already an ugly scar on the face of the phone (Genius button) it is a lost cause. This phone is probably going to have the same UI as the MTS.

I guess I’ll stick to my Nexus One and enjoy Android 3.0 when it’s released with no carrier alterations with priority over everyone else. <– Personal preference.

    • annonemp

      I also meant cars! lol.

    • mjN1

Agreed!!! Not bad, but its no Desire HD. I’m keeping my Nexus aswell

  • phongeek

i might suck it up an get both hopefully cuz im loving both of them

  • phone capo

wow thought it was going have the cheap look of the my touch phones I cant front this phone looks sexy man

  • Reece

Wow, main thing to highlight should be the nice polish that’s very similar to the G2 on here, right down to the metal plating in the back and some of the nice trims. Pretty much contradicts many people crying out “WAAAAAH MYTOUCH?! THAT MEANS IT’LL BE MADE OUT OF PLASTIC AND PLAYDOUGH!! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!”

    • Vibrant Addict

Hahahaha. +1 to that comment. I can’t wait to see this phone in person.

  • mikeyo

I just wish they used capacitive buttons on the front instead of physical.

    • Bimmerz

I agree, with you – IMO the physical buttons gives it kind of a cheap look. Otherwise, it looks nice.

    • Barry

I also agree that definitely would’ve made it look cleaner and sleeker. But it looks way better in hand than I thought it did in the pics.

  • thaghost

    • Percy76

i see someone here is a black rob fan.

  • DannOfThurs

We need something this big with a KB ;) Or at least like the G2 in size, but with FFC :D

    • 2FR35H

This HAS an FFC just no KB

  • JoshL

Definitely a teen phone.. the G2 is much sexier.

    • Tito!

      Agreed. :]
MyTouch line just cheesily cheap for me.

    • SnakeEyez

Really? What makes it a teen phone. Is it the 3.8in screen, or the high end specs? Or could it be the metal plating on the back that goes against all the other MT phones? Yes the UI will be espresso but hopefully HTC revamped it as they did with their original Sense UI.

      • J5

Well, while I am making video calls with my “cheap/cheesy/teen” phone, enjoy not having the ability to do so on your G2.

      • sorandkairi

        @ J5
now i’m all down for bashing stupid comments but G2 bashing IS NOT ALLOWED, DO YOU HEAR ME! lol

      • Tony

OH YEAH VIDEO CALLS OMG, WTF are you doing to with that! show your little wiener to your girlfriend (if you have one)! FFC’s are just useless! and wow a metal back still looks like a plastic piece of crap!

      • Trevor

@J5 Unless everyone you talk to has an android phone with FFC, video calls will be infrequent at best.

        Enjoy espresso! >.>

      • Steve Jobless

Oh snap Tony, that part about about the “little wiener” was the greatest!

  • Susamh

I’m so confused!!! I don’t know which phone to get, this one or the G2. Decisions, decisions…

    • Vibrant Addict

Need a keyboard? Or need a FFC? Need a higher clocked processor? Need Vanilla Android? Gotta ask yourself all these questions.

    • cherbdaherb

i am so right there with you, cannot make up my mind on what to get. the day i do figureout what to get for my wife and i something else comes out. with tmo now no contract original g1 owner, kindof want something completely different like iphone but like tmo to confused. oh ya wife want ffc and i wouldn’t mind one either

  • aLb3Rt

guess i’ll be getting this as well. already loving my g2 ;)

  • trife

Meh. I’m still not impressed with the aesthetics. Spec wise this thing is niiiice though. Not sure if I could overlook the white (WTF?) trim though.

  • GoodAir15

Wtf? What is this joker smoking? No where does T-Mobile claim their network is 4g. They do, however, claim 4g speeds.

    • Joe

I know. He makes it sound like T-Mobile is lying.

  • tato22

    how big is the screen

    • theBIGmack

      3.8″ big.

    • mjN1

.1 bigger than my Nexus hahahah….could at least made it 4 or 4.3 and maybe it will be a deal breaker for me. oh well.

  • theBIGmack

I am curious as to how the screen compares to the Vibrant. Either way I’ll be getting it for that “4G”. Can’t wait!!!

  • James

    Can’t wait to get this!

  • Barry

Now the “plasticky” thing can be put to rest.

    • Frigadroid

I want an earth friendly android smart phone made out of bamboo 8-O :-D :-P Whaaaa whaaaa I’m allergic to cheap plastic and heavy metal phones that look like a cigarette case. Come on Tmobile and a dual core and dual sim and a ffc with uma before Christmas whaaaa!

      • Barry

Lmbo all I can say is people want what they want. Personally I hear people complain way too much. Me I know what I’m looking for and while the G2 seems like a really great device when I demoed it yesterday idk if I want to use my “freedom” on it cause I know what I’m looking for and maybe later when the demand goes down I will get it off contract via eBay/Craigslist , it just seems that good to me. But I would gladly use my new contract on the Desire HD cause that’s what I’m looking for. But to those who deem something a f**l for the simple fact its not what you want is ridiculous.

    • Reece

  • tato22

the last video of the phones show the motorla one to

  • max

I’m pleasantly surprised! Very impressive.. now just have to decide if I’m getting this or the G2…

  • mtnman

I really like the design of the MyTouch. I think it looks classey and elegant. I love that it has a metal backing so that they can’t say it has a cheap plastic feel to it. Christmas presant to myself this year is the MyTouch.

  • drew j

the g2 is freaking awsome .. im keeping it..

  • Ansel

I swear I fall in love with this phone more and more every time I see it lol…so where are all the people that complained about the “cheap and plastic feel” of the MyTouch line?? Guess T-Mobile decided to put that to rest ha ha…

    • SnakeEyez

They’re still saying that it’s a teen phone lol. Look above.

  • ThreeFourSeven

I’m not a big fan of the mytouch line(prefer vanilla) but I’m very impressed with this phone. Plus its running the 2nd generation snapdragon processor. Woot!!

  • blablabla

did you steal this from my xda post?!?!

  • cellswag5

I really like this phone. But I just got the g2 and its the best can’t put it down. I really like the fcc on the mt hd but ill wait til fcc becomes more standard and everyone has one. My g2 should ho?d me down til then.

  • XfooYen

Oh, God I hope that white border isn’t on all color models. If I choose the black phone and half of it is white with a metal back, well, that’s just lame. Great otherwise.

    • stricken23

There’s a link in the comments above that shows what the “black” version could possibly look like. If it is, then it will have a silver back.

      • XfooYen

My bad. I thought all models were two-tone with a white body, but I guess the MyTouch shown in the vid IS the white model. All models will have the black front since the screen takes up almost all of the front space. The black model should be all black with metal trim and metal backplate. I get it now. Duuuuhhhh.

  • herinel

G2 is still better in my opinion, I had espresso ui and it sucks, besides stock vanilla is way better, good job in the new build quality though, its a step in the right direction for the mytouch line. :)

    • blablabla

      stock android=boring

that’s like going to the ice cream shop and asking for a vanilla ice cream cone.

      • Ansel

I agree with you. Though I feel Stock Android is more for Hardcore Android fans, where as different skins over the OS is for Causal Android users. But I have no problem with Espresso UI plus I don’t think it’s gonna be as overwhelming on the MyTouch HD like it was for some on the MT3GS.

      • SnakeEyez

while stock may be “boring” its more functional than other skins as it doesn’t bog down the phone. Hopefully the MTHD has a new version of espresso that makes it not as ugly (seriously, that border crap on the icons is horrible).

      • George

Custom skin on the phone = wait for update

That’s like going into an ice cream shop with a proprietary type of cone that you must use, and the special scoop the store needs specifically for your cone isn’t yet made and they’re not really certain when it will arrive, but they estimate sometime in the 1st quarter of next year–maybe.

In the meantime, no new ice cream at all for you–but hey, you can always look at the pretty cone.

      • tmogee

        just simply download launcher pro..

      • LNG

They could put this whole debate to rest and make it a user-configurable option. Espresso or stock Android. Choose one. You can change it later.

I think these companies think people choose their phone based on the UI. I don’t know many that do. Many more people complain about Motoblur and Touchwiz than like it as far as I can tell. Sense, people seem to like, but there is still a significant portion of people who would prefer stock.

      • Waterboy

The only people who like stock android more than anything else are the hardcore android nerds because all they can ever think about is speed and higher benchmark scores.

Seriously…you can’t possibly say that stock android is better than sense because it’s not. Sense is how android should’ve been. And it’s not like sense is even slow. If you want slow look at motoblur. Scrolling is always choppy.

Stock android is like that ugly car at the race track. It’s fast but at the end of the day it’s still a pile of junk on the outside. Maybe gingerbread will change all of that but nothing will be proven until then.

  • Jess

I like the G2, but I’ve never been a big fan of physical qwerty keyboards. The main thing that has made me decide to get this phone is the wifi calling and messaging capabilities. My phone tends to lose reception in certain spots in the house because it is situated on a rather large hill. Along with all the other specs, this phone is probably going to be the best t-mobile has for a while.

  • Ansel

I think the 2.2 update will probably change the overall feel of Espresso this time around and yes, will possibly get rid of the borders around the icons lol…

  • J-man

Looks nice! This is going to be in my christmas list. hopefully santa will bring it for me jk

  • BenJammin

FINALLY!!!!! A phone that I feel like I wont have to think twice about upgrading twice to!!! I held off for SOOOOO long because I knew t-mobile had to come out with a phone to compete with the like of the Evo’s and iphone 4’s… FINALLY!!! a phone that can compete with the other companies! Guaranteed Purchase from this customer….

  • Yes

I still think this phone is insanely ugly.

  • adien

Mr. CNET man: “they say it’s 4g, but it is not 4g, and that is an important distinction to understand”
Why is that important to understand? What I understand mr. cnet man is that I’m rocking hspa+ at 5+ mbps on my g2 (actually it was turned on in denver since at least 9/23) while my friends with evo’s and epics are left in the dust because sprint hasn’t rolled out to denver yet (one of the nations top 25 cities by population)… not to mention that i had HSPA+ all over in colorado springs as well and that is well under half the size of denver. I downloaded an album from amazon mp3 and it simply screamed through it, even faster than even my home computer. So yeah, it’s not 4g, it’s faster, more available and less buggy…

  • DemonSnot

had the Vibrant(great pic quality) crappy a$$ phone. Had to restart it just to change tasks or get it to unfreez. Now I have the G2…AWSOME…
If this new Mytouch is faster, as reliable and has more features than the G2, this phone will stomp all compitition…

  • Schneider

HTC sense is pretty cool it feels like the way Android should have been made. With all these new Tmobile phones coming out where’s the Android 2.2 for the current mytouch slide. If I buy this thing makes me feel like I’ll have to get the next new phone just to run ginger bread 3.0 when it comes out. My touch slide is less than a year old would be nice to get the current build of android on it.

  • Will

Damn it. I just ordered the Vibrant too and I am liking the look/specs of this one as well. Now I’m deciding if I should send it back and wait for this to come out or what :( ?

    • ogopogo

send it back. You will be glad that you did.

    • stricken23

Ya I haven’t been hearing good things about the vibrant anyway. First is the whole GPS issue and who knows when that will be fixed. Second, it’s a Samsung.

  • volcanic515

now let’s see if they make it as difficult to root and develop for as the MyTouch Slide was. I say “was” cause apparently someone finally broke the security code (achieving S-Off) on the phone recently but they’re not ready to release the process yet.

  • abel2fresh4u

so far so good. hope it comes out before thanksgiving thou. cant wait

  • mydixiewrecked

I don’t know about this one? Phone looks cheap/played out MyTouch design. Nothing makes me say Ohhhh.. I gotta have this one!

  • alex

the glacier is still out possibly..its been some time since we heard from it…any word david?

    • David, Managing Editor

Not yet, still working on the rest of the years roadmap.

  • AgDon

Being one who said he thought it was to much plastic from the the previous pictures this is a nice surprise. It looks a whole lot better than what it was thought to be. Still only a 3.8″ screen and Espresso, I’ll have to go with the G2 still, I still like the Desire HD better 4.3″ and Sense (not available in US yet), but this is definately better than before.

    • ogopogo

I was agonizing over the same thing. After seeing the previous MyTouch phones, I was concerned that this one would be too plasticky as well. But everything that I’ve seen so far, indicates that it is a really nice unit. The G2 WAS my first choice until I read the specs on the MTHD. Although I don’t plan on using the FFC very much it is nice to have, and may have future applications beyond video chatting. The G2 doesn’t have that option.

  • pimpstrong

My girlfriend will love this. I mean it will be PERFECT for her especially coming from the wack @$$ abandoned origional MyTouch. “No Phones Left Behind” Pff.

  • Joe

Damn it!! When he turned the phone around to show the camera, he had his thumb over the left side… is there a flash under there? Either way, nice looking phone!

    • ogopogo

Yes, it has a flash. The only “new” phone that doesn’t have a flash is the Vibrant.

  • alex32

    buying my g2 tonight.
the only thing that would have had me consider this phone and wait was if it had a 4.3 inch screen..and i would have delt with the bad expresso ui. But since its 3.8, the g2 wins over even if its 3.7.
its good to see tmobile come out with these super phones though

    • ogopogo

You choose your phone based solely on screen size? Then you go on to say that 3.7 is better than 3.8? Now, if you had said something like “I prefer a physical keyboard, and that’s why I would choose the G2”, it would have made more sense.

BTW it is ESPRESSO not eXpresso.

      • stricken23

      • alex32

        yes..espresso..silly typo..are you perfect?lol
i didnt make it solely on screen size. i also did the decision on an android stock. i forgot to mention on keyboard as well..the 3.8 inch screen kb is too small for me in my opinion. if it had 4.3 (mytouch) it would make up that extra little weight on the g2 since i tholds a kb..get me?
g2 and this phone are great phones, but i would like to have my updates (:
