The G2 Has Landed, Available In Just 8 Days

Update 1: Just added about 20 more images to the gallery, might take a few minutes to populate but there are quite a few shots for your viewing pleasure!

Update 2: Engadget just posted their own preview of the G2 with a quick 1:26 video showing a brief look at the phone, its worth taking a glance at! Don’t skip our photos though!

It’s certainly been a long time coming but the first T-Mobile G2’s have unofficially arrived in at least one T-Mobile retail store. While the sales date isn’t for another 8 days and while most of you still wait for word on just where exactly your pre-order is we’ve got some “in the wild” shots to hold you over.  Enjoy the shots, we’ve got more incoming so keep checking back for some more!

    Lmao “Android by HTC.”

    • http://www.dolphinfree.net tenkely

      Right?!?!

    • http://twitter.com/ViktorY2K10 ViktorPrime

yes but it is bad spacing the android logo is there because well you know and the “by HTC” is there due to the it being called the T-mobile G2 so they had to put there name somewhere

  • http://www.twitter.com/tubaking182 tubaking182

very nice looking, hope to see updates later tonight

  • mikeeeee

is that a ‘wifi calling’ app printed on the box in the top row of preloaded apps?

    • David, Managing Editor

It’s not, but I just asked to see if its on the phone, but I wouldn’t be surprised if its not as it would likely be pushed later through a software update!

    • http://androidpuertorico.com Raúl

      That would be Google Voice.

    • Madison

There will be new Wifi Calling features that even include unlimited text in the next weeks. Cell Fi. or Call Fi.. Some thing. All BB’s some Androids.

  • Tom

So if they are already arriving in retail store they should start shipping out to us soon. right? right? please :(

  • funkmasterC

I got a text message from T-mobile on Sunday saying that “Your equipment order is being processed. It will be delivered within 3 business days. A tracking # will be sent to your phone once it ships.” That sounds like a standardized message they send to all the folks who upgrade – regardless of the phone. I have not received a tracking number, tomorrow is the third day and I really don’t expect to get the phone before the 2nd.

    • mthode

I was told I’d get the phone Wednesday when I called and asked why my phone was not in. I have the email stating that the phone will arrive on the 27th. If the phone does not arrive I will be canceling my order and going to a store (I live near the distribution point (1-2 day shipping on ground)).

    • Golden

Go to ups.com enter your telephone number in the track by reference area as such ***-***-****

      • mthode

Nothing shows up with the following formats.
        *-***-***-****
        ***-***-****
        ***********
        **********

    • Allen

I got the same text Sunday, but mine said “7″ business days, not 3 like yours.

  • DUB

Dang.. Anyone here with a Sept 30th date for the phone arrival but no tracking info yet??? T-mobile needs to come on with it.

    • ItsMichaelNotMike

Are you talking about pre-orders? In the pre-order thread I said that IMHO T-Mobile was not going to be sending out the G2 to anyone before the launch date, meaning at best you will get your G2 the day it’s launched.

Where did you get the Sept. 30th date for phone arrival? As I said, any messages sent by T-Mobile via text were just generic statements it sends on all phone orders.

I could be wrong, but that’s my take on it. Why not call customer care and ask them where it is.

(Also, as I said in the other thread) did you pay a deposit on pre-order? If so, the phone won’t be sent until T-Mobile gets all their money. And if you did pay for it in full, they still will not send the phone early, IMHO.

By the way, I have never heard of T-Mobile sending out phones early on a new product launch.

      • Chad

on the T-Mobile forum there are people now starting to report they tracked their ups shipping by reference (telephone number no dashes) and that it’s showing up they will get their phones on 9/30 all 3 people selected 3 day shipping when they bought their phone

  • Aqua

It says in the second row that this device “will not” transition between WIFI and the network….

    FAIL FAIL

    • David, Managing Editor

We knew that though, that was in our post about the UMA service, that it wouldn’t handoff.

      • Aqua

Got ya… was just pointing it out on the box. I wish it would ship already. LOL

  • cellswag

Yeah david not bad, really hope to see some updates on it, and some much needed my touch hd news.

  • hondavic

I just called TMobile to see if I qualify for a discount and how much for an upgrade and they can’t give me an exact number because the price(phone details) aren’t in the system yet. It’s frustrating, I need to know because i’m selling my BlackBerry and using that $$$ towards the G2.

    • Rpinazo

I feel your pain, I too can’t use my loyalty deal as I have to wait for the official launch date. Ugh!

    • Madison

Full upgrades 217.99 After a 50 dollar mail in rebate. 2 year contract with the REQ Web. If your over 12 months in your upgrade but not full yet you still get a discount but nearly as much.

      • hondavic

Well the last upgrade i used was in 8/09 for the Mytouch 3G…so i’m in almost 14 mths without an upgrade so i dont know dollar-wise how much it adds up to. I called cust care and used the Vibrant as an example because full retail its 499.99 just like the g2 ive heard. So they said i would get $155.00 off of the retail if i renew. But as I stated they can’t give me details because the phone hasnt launched.

      • Roel

I got the phone for 150.00 no mail in rebate through the loyalty dept. I had upgraded to the vibrant 2 months ago

  • Eric B

anybody else not ordering this untill a tutorial video showing how it works comes out?

    • jazzmanmonty

i’m waiting for an unboxing video and walkthru of the phone, and then when its in stores some hands on time. waiting for a costco bundle to come out with the phone and a bunch of accessories. what i really wanna see are some benchmark test videos from a few ppl vs the one that we got last week that seems a bit fishy.

      • vtran

just went to costco today and asked about the bundle and one of the reps over there said that they wont have it in until November (well at least at my costco)…

      • mikeyo

        Fishy i think not

      • vtran

yeah i thought it was fishy too.. when he told me, i was like oh maybe i should pre order thru t-mobile then and then gave me a really rude reply so i just left and i didn’t even bother to continue the convo.

    • Manny

i might pass on the g2 and wait to see what else comes out.

  • NiiDiddy

Sweet! Too bad I want to wait for THE PHONE to use my last upgrade; might be waiting for awhile until I finally feel completely that way about a device.

  • Amanda

I want it! Also, when are we going to get a hands on video? I can’t wait!

  • quadbaby

    No belt clip huh?

    • tooltard

      haha, that would be funny

  • cherbdaherb

i am not getting this until some peeps walk thru it and really check it out first. i never rush out to buy a phone before it is put thry real life grind.

  • Y-49 Si

Is that an HTC phone case i see in the box!?!

    • jazzmanmonty

na i wish. look closely its just a usb cable wrapped up.

      • Y-49 Si

The usb is on the left….i am looking in the 3rd portion(far right)

    • lava

looks like the battery to me. there also is no mention of a phone case on the back of the box…

    • jazzmanmonty

      thats just the battery

      • mikeyo

Looks like the wall charger to me.

  • Galen20K

G2 is Beautiful! I almost wish it were more than Marginally better than my Nexus One which I also love. kinda wish I didn’t love it so much! seriously ha

    • smartphoneguy

keep your nexus one , i have one too and im waiting. and just wait for some kind of tab that can do voice calling , for tmo

    • 2C

That is exactly how I feel. Loved the G1 but love my Nexus One even more. The G2 looks really nice but I’m going to wait until I play with it in a store before I even think of moving on from my Nexus One.

  • Tim

Sexy. I really hope that the marketing team does somewhat of a decent job advertising this, no hokey kids are free ice cream navigation!

  • Rpinazo

That’s one beautiful beast right there. Just waiting for some confirmation on the MyTouch HD specs to make my final decision. I need to use my Cust Loyalty deal wisely!

  • ella

i’ll play around with it before deciding to buy it, really don’t know if I want the HD3 or not

  • Ecks

I want to get it but I need some accessories, especially after what happened when I bought my wife a holder for her slide n it fell to pieces..worst 35 ever spent

  • Ecks

I want to get it but I need some accessories, especially after what happened when I bought my wife a holder for her slide n it fell to pieces within days..worst 35 ever spent.

  • Testament

I know this is a little off topic, but Is there a way to get the g2 with a 1 year contract? I don’t see it on there website.

    • ItsMichaelNotMike

      T-Mobile took away that option.

But if you call and ask for a supervisor and politely demand a one year price, he or she is authorized to give it to you.

Obviously the longer you have been with T-Mobile and depending on your payment history, the more likely they will do the deal. If you are new to T-Mobile or a deadbeat, they will tell you they don’t do one year deals any longer.

      • Testament

They would take it away when I needed it… I don’t mind a 1 year contract, but two Is too long for new tech. Look’s like I’ll be looking for the G2 on Craigslist…

  • Tiffany

For walk through videos, go to YouTube and search HTC Desire Z. Its the same exact phone… I’m so tempted to pre-order but I want to see it in person at the store first.

    • Timo

The G2 has vanilla Android, whereas the Z has Sense. So a walkthrough might be helpful for the hardware, but not for the software/OS.

  • ItsMichaelNotMike

What’s that fantastic phone next to the G2 in some of the shots?!

Oh wait, that’s the phone I have, the Vibrant.

    Never mind.

    • Evan

      Cool story, bro.

    • mikeyo

Fantastic phone with no flash or notification light. Looks more like a cheap turd to me.

      • Ray

What are you talking about no flash or notification light? Are you blind? You can obviously see the led light and it says led flash on in the features. The notification light is just like how it was on the G1….Wonder what phone you have that is better than the G2…

      • Galen20K

Mike no, he was speaking about the Vibrant not having a notification light.

    • Foxeh

I was actually hoping the G2 would be smaller, but I got over that after looking over the measurements when they were revealed a while back…

      • J-Hop2o6

its thinner and lighter than the TP2 tho.. unless u have feminine hands.

      • Foxeh

It as big as the Vibrant in the pics here (thicker of course). I like the more slender shape in phones like the Dinc, iPhone 4 or even the G1. The G1 is still thick, but it isn’t that wide. The G2 has the footprint of a 4″ device, but if that’s a necessary evil for its build quality, I’ll take it.

Just as long as it’s not the size of a Droid X. I’ve played with that a while back and that’s way too big.

      • J-Hop2o6

lol.. but yea, its body (not the whole body tho) is made out of aluminum, so build quality is increased from the normal harden plastic.. plus a little more screen bezel to protect the glass from crackin if dropped on its sides/corners.

and slender shape of the G1!? u on that stuff? the G2 is MORE slender than the G1.. the g1 has that dumb jay leno chin.

      • Foxeh

I think you mistook what I meant about “slender.”

Let me put it this way: You look at a lady front-on and her silhouette appears tall and slender, but then she turns around to reveal her profile and suddenly you realize that she as a disproportionately large rear and thighs. :P

The Droid Incredible is very similar silhouette of the G1. Check the dimensions in their specs, their only real differences are in thickness/chin-ness.

The G2 on the other hand is slightly thinner and a lot wider than the G1 despite having the same screen size as the Dinc. The point I made earlier is that I’m hoping the build quality (and keyboard) justifies that. From what I’ve seen thus far, I’m not worried.

        Like I said, I’m over it. :)

  • swehes

Now if it could just come out as a developer phone from Google without the bloatware and heaven is made. :)

    • J-Hop2o6

they’re prolly waiting til 2011 for a HTC & Qualcomm dual-core phone.. watch!

  • blablabla

Ok how the heck do I get off mobile version. every time I click switch to regular theme it still just takes me right back to mobile.

    • INeedHotSpot

      Same here.

  • quadbaby

I see a Tmo G2 hard case in one of those pics…can someone confirm if those hard cases currently in Tmo stores or not?

    • keele8

Yes, they do have hard cases. Not sure if they are “in stores” but go to daydeal online and click on the G2, they have 4 cases and two different screen protectors. That is all I have found for accesories at this point.

  • http://nurfherder1 bishop

    :( stupid keyboard.

    • ItsMichaelNotMike

Well I have to admit that a year ago I would have NOT agreed with your characterization because I relied on a physical keyboard.

But having used Swype on my HD2 and Vibrant I have to now semi-agree with you because I no longer like a physical keyboard on a handset. Swype is that good. I can type a lot faster, and for quick messages I can even use it with one hand. But mainly my typing is faster.

I say “semi-agree” with you because I don’t think physical keyboards are “stupid.” Lots of people still use them and some people will never switch.

Actually, I can see Swype enabled phones, sans keyboards, becoming the norm and physical keyboards going the way of the fax machine (only people outdated and not with it still use fax machines, while 80% of business communications is done via e-mail). When I was using my Slide before I gave it to my GF to use I found myself using Swype rather than sliding out the KB.

Personally, I like that without a keyboard the phones can be made a lot thinner than one with a physical KB.

      • 16309A

Where do you get your info when you say: “(only people outdated and not with it still use fax machines, while 80% of business communications is done via e-mail)”

My business is pretty up to date, email, laptops, smartphones for all personel, and I have to say that a HUGE percentage of my customers still use fax for the preferred method of communications, a lot of them being very big companies.

        I’m just sayin….

      • Fujitsujeff

I agree. Physical keyboards are still necessary. I had a physical keyboard on all my phones (Sidekick, Wing, G1), until I purchased the Vibrant. Although Swype is great, and is making life without a keyboard easier, their are times when I wish I had a physical keyboard. For example, Swype does not even work correctly when using Documents to Go by Dataviz. In fact, using this app, or doing punctuation changes is much easier if you have a keyboard, as opposed to touch screen.

  • ogopogo

Now, all we need is some more recon on the MTHD. This way I can decide where I want to spend my $1,000.

    • jazzmanmonty

why spend $1000!? i liked the initial specs of the mthd, but it seems its gonna be one and the same as this w the exception of a .01″ larger screen, ffc, and no keyboard. i really like keyboards so i’ll sacrifice that .01″ and ffc. now unless it has some amazing ram specs, better quality screen, or some awesome processor, then its G2 for me after my hands on and costco gets it. unless we hear of something totally awesome soon that may come out around xmas!

      • ItsMichaelNotMike

This is a test on the moderation message I keep getting, just ignore what appears a double post.
        ___

A wise decision, IMHO. Like I keep saying, people should wait to see the different phones that will be debuting this holiday season.

Moreover, I suspect that in two months T-Mobile will debut holiday pricing on this phone.

Lastly, while HTC makes great products and I don’t anticipate problems, you never know if a new device will have issues. (Witness my Vibrant with its GPS lag issue and people impatiently waiting for an official FroYo – Frozen Yogurt – Android 2.2. update.)

        • David, Managing Editor

Oh Michael, how I love that you test the spam filter!

      • ogopogo

I will need 2 phones (one for the wife). I’m assuming the MTHD will be around $500 as well. I like the fact that for the same price of the G2, I will get a thinner phone, FFC, and HDTV out. This is of course, if all of the rumors have been correct.

    • ItsMichaelNotMike

        the MTHD i mean

      • ogopogo

        Yep. Looks pretty decent.

I just wish it came in different colors – like the original black :(

    • Testament

FYI…You may wanna fix your Keyboard.

    • FlyingRequin

why not wait until the phone is available in stores — maybe then you will be able to BOGO.

(FYI – this is just a thought)

That Vibrant screen looks Gorgeous. Still planning on getting G2 thou.

    • mikeyo

I think the G2 screen looks better, crisp and very color accurate. the vibrants screen looks as though its bleeding color.

  • derrickps3

so what is so amazing about this ugly phone?? really someone tell me???

    • jazzmanmonty

i think its pretty elegant. but i never liked the finish of the g1 that much, and this phone, having an aluminum body, would have looked much better with natural brushed aluminum, or a nice glossy finish. either way, any paint job is gonna chip.

      • Galen20K

        Agreed Jazz

      • mikeyo

its not all aluminum. so sadly no chipping is going to happen here.

    • http://www.hagrin.com z6

Not sure what you consider ugly about it. It looks pretty damn nice to me. A very clean design, what you would expect from HTC. It will be the fastest android phone available upon release (arguably the galaxy S phones will match or surpass it once they get froyo… but who knows when in the world that will happen).

It has a hardware keyboard and it runs stock android (although it lacks tethering out of the box). It has a lot of things going for it…

    • LookingForward

It has everything that I want. Tell us what it is that you want. And don’t say FFC, that has been beat to death.

  • cellswag5
    • Galen20K

Because they’re Ugly and we don’t want Verizon’s designs.

      • cellswag5

the first pic should be the my touch hd, im tired of the kiddy looking phones we keep getting.

    • logic660

that phone is pretty much verizon’s version of the G2. I think it even has the same 800mhz processor

    • keele8

Whats so nice about either one of those phones compared to the G2 or the MTHD that is coming out?

    • Evan

The second link in my opinion is ugly. The first one on the other hand is nice.

    • mikeyo

god that thing is hideous. looks like a phone some twelve year old would have.

      • mikeyo

1st one looks like what i would hope the MTHD would look like

2nd one (turd) looks like it might be called the htc merge (union of a keyboard and touch screen could be called a merge)

      • J-Hop2o6

        ^^ this

      • Barry

        I think it’s the union of GSM/CDMA=Merge

      • mikeyo

        Ah good call Barry

    • Barry

Oh man I knew this was coming smh so what makes the HTC Merge/Lexikon or whatever it’s called better than the G2 same processor same screen size ??? And it’s missing a trackpad/trackball. Only thing is it’s black (which I would rather see the G2 but it still looks good.) And until I see that 4.3″ phone with verizon branding on it I’m saying it’s not there’s because there was speculation that, that very phone was the Merge or lexikon but it’s obviously not. Save this argument for something else. T-mo gets plenty well deserved bashing from us this is not the time. You can’t compare practically identical devices and say one is better because you just prove the point that some ppl feel on here that no matter what T-mobile does it’s never enough.

  • JJ

I was hoping that Wifi calling would miraculously be on the G2 out of the box, but here’s hoping it will be an OTA update SOON. I will be buying the first decent Android phone on Tmbo with UMA/Wifi calling as soon as it is available!!! Come on Tmob!!!

  • ItsMichaelNotMike

What I meant above in saying “I have never heard of T-Mobile sending out phones early on a new product launch” is that T-Mobile has always been tight with phone releases.

For example, on any upcoming phone if you walk into a T-Mobile store and ask to see it (because they usually have them a week before launch), the manager or whoever may allow you to see it. Most will NOT let you take pics.

So with such tight controls I can’t imagine T-Mobile would send a new device to thousands of customers who pre-ordered, ten days before the official launch.

If T-Mobile is sending out phones to you, to where you get it today, tomorrow or by the 30th, for example, that would be TMoNewsWorthy as it would be a first.

So all you wondering where your pre-order phones are at, have you called T-Mobile to clarify all this? If so, what did they say?

I’d call customer care instead of wondering why you don’t have a tracking number or why you have not got the phone yet.

Lastly, remember that pre-order is done to assure you get the phone while others may lose out on launch day. I have never known pre-order to mean you get the product early.

    Sorry…

P.s. Don’t diss T-Mobile on its preorder policies, it’s been like that with all carriers and retailers.

But if T-Mobile did negligently send out generic messages telling people they will get their phones in three days, for example, well I’d call T-Mobile, threaten to cancel the account and work a hundred dollar discount out of them, as an apology. (They will do this as they did it for me on my Touch Pro2 purchase in August 09. The supervisor said “For our messing up on pricing and giving you bad information I will take an additional $100 off the phone.”)

That’s very wrong to have given bad info into excited T-Mobile customers who pre-ordered. I know what it’s like to super excitedly look into the mail box each day. (I did that on a BlackBerry 9700 order that did not arrive for three weeks because T-Mobile CSRs misspelled sanfrancisco in my e-mail confirmation address.)

They spelled it “sanfransisco.” No order confirmation from me, they did not send the phone. It took a fourth CSR two weeks later to discover the problem on their end was spelling something as simple as sanfrancisco in my e-mail address.)

    • jazzmanmonty

umm pics are prolly from a tmobile store worker ninja that kindly supplied them to us. and yes the pre-order phones can come early. i got my g1 almost a week before its release. it does happen. don’t dog people that are excited to get their phones. as for tracking i remember there being a delay when i ordered the g1, then suddenly it popped up and it was already on its way. patience is virtue.

    • INeedHotSpot

I had my G1 before it came out.

  • jazzmanmonty

i just remembered something. the spec sheets released the other week with the accessories stated g2 accessories would come 9/28. well they came and so did the phones. maybe this shows some insight on the release dates of some of the other upcoming phones if we can speculate that the accessories are coming in the same day as the phones. so add about a week to that for release date?

  • lauren

I’m waiting for this to be in stores and possibly after the MT3HD comes out. I love the idea of Vanilla, but not so sold on a hard keyboard anymore.

Looks much better in these photos than previous ones!

  • Allyn

Can we see any side shots? Showing the thickness of the device? Thanks for all the pics. Can’t wait.

    • cellswag5

seem that they dont like showing side shots, even tmobile did this with the G1 in there ads, they hide the thickness of the phone.

    • Foxeh

T-Mobile.com has side shots on the G2′s product page as well as the G2 minisite.

According to the specifications, it’s a hair thinner than the G1… probably due to the G1′s chin, is my guess.

      • cellswag5

no i mean in ads or even llok at the box pic. its about the same as the my touch slide from what i seen on the site.

  • BrianR

I don’t want to sound stupid or anything, but I have never preoredered a phone before and was wondering if you pay the full price up front at time of preordering. Thanks guys! Totally getting this phone once I can sell my Vibrant.

I just hope it has great Battery life, because as feature rich as this Vibrant has, the battery life BLOWS CHUNKS! & i’m using it very light & moderately w/ all the setting on low & taskiller usage. So, hopefully this G2 solves that problem w/ it’s more efficient & underclocked processor, or whatever. Or i’ll just be heading to the LG Optimus One, idc as long as my phone last a day, i’ll be satisfied!

Eureka… I think I have found the reason I keep getting a message that says “Your comment is awaiting moderation.”

I tell David in a message. But here is the issue for those of you whom have suffered the same, it’s something I did.

As some of you have experienced, when you post a comment the site crashes and your comment does not get posted. You have two choices when this happens, retype the message or just move on to something else.

To prevent comment loss I always highlight my entire comment, right click, then click the “copy” function from the pop-up menu. My comment is then automatically pasted into a clipboard saving program I have (Note Frog).

After getting these moderation comments for months I have recently tried to see what I was doing to where come of my comments got the moderation message.

Turns out, what I just now discovered, the problem is that if my comment is still highlighted from my “select all” and “copy” commands, that if I press “submit comment” this sends some type of code to TMoNews forum software that indicates I may be a nefarious harvester, spammer or whatever.

In other words, if your comment remains highlighted when you press “submit comment” this sends a signal to the site’s blog program (security features?) that something may be up so it generates the moderation comment.

Why might this be it? I posted a comment that was highlighted, got the moderation message. Posted the same comment without it being highlighted, it was immediately posted.

So this is not a random issue, it’s a user side act (submitting highlighted comment) that’s the problem.

Moral of the story, make sure your comment is not highlighted when pressing “submit comment.”

Considering highlighting texts is a local state, your web browser would have to be sending something different to the server when you hit submit if what you say is accurate. I’m still inclined to believe David when he tells us that the Awaiting Moderation message is indeed random (aside from a few filters).

I have my doubts this comment system sees a highlighted comment slaps a…

…stamp on the deal, but I’ve been wrong before.

Anyone know if this comes with SWYPE preloaded?? I thought I read that somewhere at one time. Although like a lot of people I think Swype is actually faster than a QWERTY.

    • tooltard

      i definitely read that too

    Thanks for the G2 porn.

  • greyfox

my biggest question is will the g2 still support HTC’s quick boot like the desire z?

    • Foxeh

I’d be surprised if it did, though I wouldn’t complain. Flashing the Desire HD’s Sense ROM onto the Nexus One does in the N1 having that feature.

But if they were gracious enough to remove Froyo’s wifi hotspot, perhaps they’ll grace us with “HTC Fast Boot” as well, since we know the G2 not purely stock.
