What Is Project Emerald?

For the past few days our sources have been whispering the words: “Project Emerald”. So naturally, the BIG question is, “What Is Project Emerald?” One of our highly trusted sources hit us up and told us a few details. Our source states that it is definitely a handset launch, and that Magenta is referring to it as, a ” new Nexus One-like device”. Our initial thought is that its the HTC Desire, (you know that uber gorgeous, Snapdragon powered device, with the nice 3.7″ AMOLED display). We’ve been hearing rumors of the Desire headed Magenta’s way for awhile now,  but as you all know, we do not like to spread “unconfirmed rumors”. So yeah, while we’re thinking the Desire, we definitely aren’t removing the possibility that it could be another new “Super-phone”. We’re working on diggin’ up more info so stay tuned!

Don’t forget to leave your hopes and dreams in the comments!

Hoping for Android 2.2 phone with at least a 4″ AMOLED screen… why not dream right.

  • Galen20K

I”m hoping its not the Desire and more on par and exceeding the EVO. I currently onwn the Nexus One and the Desire is not enough of an Upgrade for me. MORE! Go BIGGER T-Mobile!

    • Nick

T-mo needs to offer a phone like the Desire, though. myTouch 3g slide to the EVO is a HUGE jump.

  • aLb3Rt

HD3 baby! ;) (hoping and dreaming!) lol

    • Johnny

would be nice! that concept is sick!!

  • Rewdy

Please, please, please let it be a 1+ GHz android 2.1+ device! I’ve been WAITING! :)

    • irko

please T-Mobile we’ve all been waiting

  • Jonathan

I’ve been waiting months for this site to publish something about the HTC desire. All i have to say is that I sure hope T-mobile lands this phone this summer. I was getting ready to jump ship and change carriers. But now this brings hope that we will get this phone. And hopefully i won’t have to settle for the mytouch slide.

  • JBLmobileG1

HD3 with Android…. although I doubt it would be and HD3 because the HD2 still sells really well. Maybe the Motorla Motoroi? How about thee Nexus 2? I am hoping Google would have learned their lesson on the first one and would actually let Tmobile sell their next Android phone. Maybe a Nexus One like device with an actual keyboard?

    • Joe

The Motoroi might have been cool last September….

  • Grey Ocelot

    Maybe its the fabled Scorpion.

  • HD2/NEXUS ONE USER

i played with the incredible at vzw and the phone felt like plastic cheap plastic at that. the touch screen felt cheap as well. t mo bring on the Dell mini 5 and show that evo whos boss

  • None

Emerald = Q4 :-( Late to the party as always…

    • pecoy

yeah most likely. tmo is always late with catching up with top of the line devices. i would like me an evo comparable device on tmo THIS summer.
      june/july/august

  • MarkieMark

    Samsung S Series with Froyo.

  • mike

Motoroi means king in some other language so the king and his emeralds?

  • Orison

Assuming it has nothing to do with Ireland the “Emerald Isle” or the Emerald City, then I’d say its the Samsung Galaxy S, and that emerald in this case is simply the stonefor the month of may. If this is the case, then it has a 4 inch screen, Super AMOLED, and a 1 ghz Hummingbird processor that’s faster than the Nexus One. It would also be running Android 2.1. This should appease the complaining masses.

    • Nick

Can you please be right? PLEASE?!?

    • Josh

You may be on to something… I was hoping for an HTC product, but the Samsung S may be the phone they go with.

  • BBSwany

    Dell Streak or X10…

  • http://ajgago.wordpress.com AJ

    the Desire would be perfect!!

  • Omeer

This rumor better pan out like it sounds. At this point in time, I’ll settle for any super phone from T-mobile, period. But here’s what I’m hoping for. It should have complete support for T-mobile’s HSPA+ service and 1GHz+ processor with more RAM than you can shake a stick at. If it’s from HTC obviously sense UI onboard but none of that espresso crap, a physical keyboard would be nice but my N1′s keyboard is responsive enough so it isn’t a necessity. Swype keyboard, 5+ MP cam w/flash and Android 2.2 Boo Ya!

  • fatscooter

you HAVE to use a picture of something related to Pokemon Emerald as one of the post thumbnails. lulz

  • jmts80

    Plz be something good!

  • Bryan

While it would be great for T Mobile to come out with a top of the line Android phone, it still doesn’t compensate for their not so great network (i.e. always switching between 3G and EDGE, slow data speeds). My wife and I have had T Mobile for the past 4 years and we just recently got to test drive the Incredible from Verizon and we instantly noticed the increased speed! In my opinion, being that these phones are more or less mini computers (who talks on phones anymore? lol) a strong, fast connection is VERY important.

    • watbetch

They’re working on the network, it’s not an overnight thing regardless of what you think.

      • Bryan

LOL I never once said it was an overnight thing or even thought that to be true…I know there are a LOT of things that have to be put into place and building a network to house millions of customers is no easy task, and certainly isn’t cheap. I was just stating the facts…Not hating on T Mobile at all, like I said we have been with them for 4 years. You have to admit though, Magenta is always a tad late when it comes to running with the big dogs, whether it be not getting the latest superphone, or being up to par network wise :)

    • smylax

Have you not been paying attention to network upgrades? HSPA+ 21MBps? Its going to smoke the competition. Its not even close in speed.

Oh, and using it in the store is not the same as using it in the real world. Every store has its own “mini-tower” in the store so you’ll always get ideal speeds. True for all of the big 4.

      • None

Re your store having a mini tower:

That’s the biggest crock I’ve ever heard. No argument necessary: you are wrong.

      • Testtiment

What good is speed if you service is unreliable? Every sense the jump to 7.2 my internet has been horrible. They need to stabilize their internet first!

  • The Alchemist

I hope it’s the Galaxy S – wasn’t something about the image we’ve seen of it green? However, given the huge anticipation and let down of “Project Dark”, and TMo’s recent lackluster offerings, I’m going to speculate that it’s most likely a forthcoming release very soon, and that it’s another midrange Android phone.

  • Deaconclgi

    Nokia N8 would be nice.

  • Ahh Yo!

Just stop teasing me and make a phone that has 6″ AMOLED (HD-1080i) touch screen (anti-glare) with Intel 1.66Ghz Dual Core Atom (allowing you to multi-task), Wireless-N, inter-changeable battery, at least 64GB memory and 1GB shared ram/video and a O/S that will allow you to do the following: play all formats of music/video, plays Flash, Html5, Java and any other scripts I forgot, without draining my wallet.

    • Izzy!

Ha You want all that and expect your wallet not to be stripped?

    • Nick

      Weight: 2 lb
      Battery life: 2 hr (Standby)

    • T-what

YOU’LL PUT YOUR EYE OUT! Sorry, I grew up watching Christmas Story…

I’m pretty sure this is not a Q4 Launch since our market managers have already had there hands on this so called “nexus one like” device. I’M crossing my fingers for the Galaxy S, 1gz processor, front facing camera with 8mp rear camera, Super AMOLED 4.0in screen. Of course the Motorola Shadow with a 4.3inch touch and qwerty keyboard would suite me just fine.

  • Aston

a desire would be PERFECT! i would save up all my money for it. lol

  • umaluver

at least the forums are down so schenkp cant spew his standard ‘iphone you heard it here first diatribe”

  • jeff

you have to remember the rumor about the htc incredible coming to tmobile

    • Kickstar13

I don’t think that rumor will ever come to fruition, and I believe it might have been a typo. But you never know! :)

      • Nick

Yeah. Plus those (Typo?) leaks were just before Verizon announced it and they’ve dubbed it a “droid” There’s no way its not exclusive.

  • pecoy

its just their new $50 unlimited talk/text plan. emerald=green as in saving some green aka money on this new talk and text plan

    • namo

Yup! This emerald thingy wont be any handset. It will Be like a plan. I bet it one of those plan to save you money once you sign up for paperless billing and automated payments.

  • Joel

Yay, finally some news to get interested in.

  • pecoy

maybe its just the mytouch slide

  • ObsceneJesster

I am hoping for the Samsung Galaxy S. This phone will be more powerful than any phone currently available. Also, I never thought I would say this but that new Touchwiz UI looks pretty damn good.

  • Random

Whatever it is I just hope it isnt a huge let down like project dark or whatever that crap was called

  • andrew

sould like a samsung glaxey s to me

  • http://twitter.com/dothedenibop dblack

no desire- that’s just a repackaged nexus one…
why don’t people just pick up the n1 if the desire is what they want…

hoping for a tmo version of the evo4g…
or even news of the samsung galaxy s…

    • enjoijams

I hope it’s not the Samsung Galaxy S, or any other Samsung for that matter. The Behold II was a flop, and felt terribly cheap, as did the Omnia that I checked out in Verizon a while back.

The reason I want the Desire is because it doesn’t have a trackball that gets stuck over time like my G1. The physical buttons are also better as opposed to the virtual ones on the N1. Not to mention the option to buy it straight from T-Mobile with a full upgrade discount.

  • alex

    Hope its the desire or something like this;

    Codenamed HTC Emerald

*New Sense UI(Expresso*8mp/11mp camera*1ghz snapdragon/1.5(brand new rumor though http://androidandme.com/2010/05/news moorestown-ready-to-slay-the-snapdragon/ *Android 2.1/2.2*Comes in white, red, and black*Loads of accessories*3.7-4.0 screen Super AMOLED *Includes 8/16gb micro SD card expandable to 32gb*Touch Sensitive track pad*Comes in different colors later in the year, purple blue, etc*Promotes t-mobiles Hspa+*3.5mm audio jack*Camera/video takes 720p HD resolution*Dual led flash*As slim as the Samsung Galaxy S/Nexus One, same size as Evo 4g*Features something similar to Motoblur*Pre-loaded with Flash 10.1*No qwerty keyboard, default on-screen keyboard is swype*My mode*Genius Button*8gb/16gb/32gb internal storage*etc

    I can dream:]

  • jds

I hope its either Galaxy S or HTC Desire!

  • wasup

hoping for the samsung galaxy s

  • 2C

I’m surprised that no one is linking this to the fact that Motorola just had a device pass through the FCC that was long rumored to be the Nexus Two. Definitely interesting to say the least.

  • Ryansgr8

It IS the Samsung Galaxy S.

  • Bobert

no flash for the camera on the galaxy s nice step backwards t mo like usual

    • smylax

Umm… how did T-Mobile take a step backward when the SAMSUNG galaxy S doesn’t have a flash? Not a T-Mobile Galaxy S, but a SAMSUNG galaxy S. I’m about to stop reading the comments anymore if I have to keep putting up with these idiots.

  • chicomendez

I currently have the hd2 and i have to say that i am not a winmo fanboy…so i hope this new super mega phone is an android phone…someone mentioned earlier the dell mini 5 and that would be GREAT…but an evo equal would be great too…i love how i read through all the posts and iphone was only mentioned a few times…thats what i like to see…i hate the iphone and its users…(that might be because i was a bit jealous at one time…)

  • Reece

At this point the longer T-Mobile draws out bringing a super spec’d Android phone, the more likely there will be a massive backlash IF this thing isn’t compatible with HSPA+.

otherwise, horaay if it’s true & plays nicely with family plan!

  • justsomedude

It could be a Garmin/tmo phone, Garmin is based in Ireland. The emerald isle.

    • Andrew

Oh no, no, that almost makes too much sense. These things never make sense! It could be though, but we think not.

  • meanmcclean

what if it is one of the rumored Motorola devices, preferably the all touch Shadow??? With Froyo, i’d wet my pants……

  • Laz

I am not sure what all the hype of the Samsung Galaxy S is, once I found out it is preloaded with Yahoo instead of Google I lost interest. You may still be able to use Googs for searches and maybe maps but that is it. I have turn my dreams to the Motorola Shadow…I am here dreaming like the rest of you

    • Laz

BTW, a Google tablet would also be awesome!

      • Laz

If I was a betting man, I would put my money on the Motorola Motoroi…

  • Dinlasvegas

It’s the iPhone of course! Crossing my fingers

  • Cat

I think that t-mobile should take the samsung galaxy S when would be crazy million people going to buy this samsung galaxy S (t-mobile knew it). I want buy samsung galaxy S now. because I wasn’t buy new upgrade super phone Im waiting see buy to super phone 1ghz better than hd2 and old tmobile smartphone. when I will find out I can sent to email talk to a man work tmobile in the nyc about samsung galaxy s coming soon. He will tell me when.

  • DH

I hope it’ll have a 4.3 in WVGA multi-touch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, Android 2.2 (Froyo), 8mp camera (preferrably w a xenon flash), at least 576 mb RAM, at least 1 gb of ROM, & at least 1 ghz cpu!!! Oh please, please, please Big Magenta! :-)

  • Fujitsujeff

well this is promising. My G1 is definitely outdated and giving me all types of problems, and the MyTouch3G Slide upgrade was not looking promising. I was contemplating the move to Sprint 4 the EVO, but if the Magenta gets a phone with similar specs, i’m staying :-) … their plans still can’t be beat!

  • morrell89

i think emerald is code for a May release….the emerald is the stone for the month of May… so it could be coming soon. because t-mobile is starting to piss me off by not having an android super phone (and they were the first). i have an upgrade that i would like to use and im not wasting it on a my touch slide, hd2, behold 2, or any of that other bull. We Want A Damn Android Superphone Now!!!!

  • soon2TMO

nice.. i think this my be the samsung galaxy S.. this phone is rumored to be available in june in europe, so this may be coming to US and on t-mobile (SGH-T959).
the samsung GS UI was all green right? so it could be it, but could be the htc Desire too, but either one , im definitely grabbing it..

the birthstone for may is emerald, maybe they will announce it sometime this month?
as far as i know, the htc desire was suppoed to be headed for verizon based on the bands that was passed by FCC..

i hope this is the samsung galaxy S! hehe
i just realized that i wont be getting the mytouch slide, coz im not into keyboards, it is so teenish for me…

  • soon2TMO
  • soon2TMO

oh and just a little correction… the galaxy S is available next month in europe, it is not a “rumor” anynmore.. lol
i hope we get it soon =)
