Lexington, KY Goes 3G

lexington-kentucky

Well it has certainly been a while since we’ve seen or heard anything surrounding 3G launches for T-Mobile. Our attention has been focused on HSPA and HSPA+ services that we have all but lost sight that not everyone has received 3G service. Lexington, Kentucky is the first 3G launch is the first 3G launch in two months and we know that plenty of areas are still left. However, HSPA and HSPA+ still dominate our desires right now and the more we focus on those launches, the less focus we have on areas that are still hoping for 3G.

Hopefully, 2010 will see a nationwide rollout for T-Mobile giving all customers the opportunity to enjoy all that 3G has to offer.

Thanks to everyone who wrote in!

Does this mean that we will have EDGE connection now on our non 3G phones?

  • sorandkairi

    Congrats Lex, KY!

  • alicia

I live in Lexington, and this is still pretty janky. My phone (blackberry 9700) keeps switching back and forth btwn Edge and 3g. But when its on 3g I lose service and get tons of network errors.

    • JJ

It is a well documented issue with BB9700 for issues on 3G network. It is not the actual TMO network issue but the issue on handset design itself. it has been reported that these models experience more drop calls on 3G than any other model unfortunately. Troubleshooting is on going why they fail when other models have no issue on TMO network. Sorry but thats the reality so if you feel terrible performance switch to 2G mode use only.

  • Mr. Stacy R. Parr

Now, the 8 largest US cities with no TMO 3G are:

    City ( Rank at http://bit.ly/ZDbP )
    ______________________________________

    Anchorage, AK ( 67 )
    Lincoln, NE ( 72 )
    Boise, ID ( 100 )
    Mobile, AL ( 116 )
    Jackson, MS ( 132 )
    Tallahassee, FL ( 133 )
    Springfield, MO ( 148 )
    Sioux Falls, SD ( 150 )

And, the 6 US cities that still need 3G, from TMO’s leaked 2009 3G roll-out list are:

    Evansville, IN
    Greenville, NC
    Springfield, OH
    Erie, PA
    Victoria, TX
    Waco, TX

I haven’t seen a 2010 roll-out list. And, I’m still looking forward to Boise getting 3G (probably some time between March and May).

    • Delusion FTL

You do realize that sioux falls and ankorage have no tmobile service at all right? You may as well take them off your list, unless you think they have plans to build these out as new markets.

      • Mr. Stacy R. Parr

Well, ever since Project Dark last year, TMO has said that they have a nationwide 3G network. So, part of the reason for my list is to show the cities that are not part of that nationwide 3G network. Maybe TMO should be saying, “we’re working towards a nationwide 3G network” instead of claiming they already have one. :-)

      • Sunnyb

The 10 largest cities that have not been upgraded to 3G are:

wow havent heard from the parr man in a while, good to here from you. Well don’t get to pumped on the 3g stuff if u have a bb 9700, because i’ve had it here in ttown for a couple months and more often than not u get the blazing speed of 300 to 350 kbps, hell edge gives you 220. And if your a lucky owner of the bb 9700 u get to flip from 3g to edge to gprs, and drop calls like a madman. I didn’t ever know there was such a thing as gprs in ttown with my old curve 8320, but with my wonderful “new” “bold” I found gprs in ttown. Whoopee lexington u get to find that wonderful gprs u may have never known u had. Sorry to be such a debbie downer on here but my connection has never been worse that with 3g and a bb 9700 I am so pissed.

      • SpanDee

In regards to issues with the BB, I upgraded to the East Asia software…5.0.0.423 and it works worlds better. I never drop off of 3G, however, I’ve noticed if I’m on a call, it will drop to GPRS then pick up 3G really quick. Plus you’ll get mobile backup, myfaves and audio postcards!

      • kershon

I got rid of my BB9700 for that reason. I never had so many dropped calls in my life until I got the 9700. Dropped 3 calls in a row one day talking to tech support and that was the last straw. I went to a TP2 and haven’t looked back. The hardware keyboard is awesome! This thing will run circles around a

      • kershon

I was trying to say the TP2 will run circles around a Blackberry. Just my opinion. (not used to typing on this laptop yet)

    • Erin

Still waiting in Erie. No idea when they plan on getting it here though.

  • Mike

I’m in Lexington on a Nexus One @ 4:18 PM I have three bars and a big E. Restarted the phone, triple checked that 3G was enabled, poked it with a stick and offered a sacrifice to the gods of “Something Better Than Edge” all to no avail.

If there is 3G in Lexington I can’t see it. I’m only about two direct miles from the city center.

    • Josh

I got 3G on my nexus one since last night. Also, I was in one of my class on UK campus this morning, and getting 4 bars of 3G service. I was actually really surprised the service was this good, since I usually don’t get any signal in that classroom…

  • Solrac924

all i know is TMo better roll out HSPA in El Paso (and everywhere else) before October. That’s when us early G1 owners acted on faith and adopted Android before anyone else. Verizon not only has the Droid on 2.1, but with the Nexus One arriving soon, it’s a very tempting choice. Magenta better be competitive with their speeds soon, otherwise they’re looking to have a wide migration on they’re hands.

    • David

      Yeah….you’ll show them!

  • mike

Still waiting for 3g in Springfield,MO maby we will get it sometime before the world ends in 2012. LOL

  • Barakuda

well i bought a my touch 3g when louisville went 3g like i said i would, and if lexington has the same experience as louisville has then there are going to be a lot of sad people in lexington…i drive around greater louisville (yes and lexington from time to time) and i CONSTANTLY loose 3g coverage as soon as i click on browser it pauses, then switches to edge…oh except of course today when i got my android update…3g all the way…i am very sorry i ever got into all this false hope about 3g and t-mobile…to bad i have wasted 10 years with this company hoping for good things…got to sit on it for another 2 years, unless i want to buy out contract…very sad t-mobile

  • Barakuda

    need to clarify….powertell + voicestream + t-mobile = 10 years same number,same store etc….still very sad

  • David

Did anyone see the speed test from the superbowl? Verizon was the slowest 3G with max speed of 96kbps lmao! That means my g! Is faster on t-mobiles 3g than the droid is on Verizons 3g. Sweet! T-mobile, the most reliable 3g network lol.

I am 400 yards from a tower with “3g” david, new just installed summer 07 and to get “said” 3g I have to be in a parking lot and sometimes hop on 1 foot. I have spread the gospel of good connections and no dropped calls for the last few years for tmob. Not anymore, on this “3g” rollout. This rollout In ttown is a joke and don’t get me started on the sudden increase in dropped calls, constantly. In my opinion just yank the “3g” and gimme edge with no dropped calls. And uma with 3g on the bb9700 your are kidding urself, and this is my second 9700 as my first bit the dust last week and gave me the dreaded white screen of death. Well at least for 20 extra bucks I got my “new” refurbed replacement which seems to have even more connection problems than my original 9700. Keep singing the praises bro, but start digging a little deeper in the box o tricks tmobs got going on. It aint pretty and no amount of lipstick will Make it better. And my wifes behold gets 0 3g either and if that tower fell over it would slap me aside the head. Get it together tmob and don’t worry about the said 21 mbps rollout until you get your shi! Together on basic 7.2 connection.

Clearly the tower you think has 3G doesn’t and your problems with the 9700 are with the 9700 and not T-Mobile

This is the link to the root wireless speed test from the superbowl…interesting.

    • rob

Does it tell how many T-mobile users vs Verizon/ATT? Tmobile might be fast because there were not as many users on the network.

  • Barakuda

    @david…
i understand your loyalty to t-mobile…but how long can you cover for the sub-par service we are getting?? there are many more frustrated customers these days than satisfied ones…you have a very broad audience here…i am sure t-mobile looks in once in a while to see if the natives are getting restless….you could use this platform to try to make a REAL difference instead of just bieng t-mobiles #1 cheerleader…I respect your enthusiasm, however i feel its a little artificial given the number of issues of late.

    respectfully,

    • Matt

I’m very happy with my T-Mobile service, for one. I get great 3G service everywhere I go and my only beef is on occasion, with my device (9700).

  • Jonathan

It really sucks to not be in a major city, I can’t wait for them to get done with the city coverage and start working on linking them with highways, then I’ll get some 3g love. Mabye two years from now? ug.

  • http://itmcc.blogspot.com Troy

What about Wyoming? Just cause our population is the lowest in the nation don’t for get us! We want 3g without paying VZ’s inflated prices!

    • mmaxsooner

Oh good luck bro. Good luck. Sorry to tell ya but ur not on either coast so… Ifu have an edge connection. Enjoy!

  • dcantrel

I have a Samsung Behold II and have had a strong 3G signal all afternoon with no dropped calls or dropped connections in Lexington, the BB 9700 sitting next to it cant keep a data connection period today though. Speed tests have been sporadic since i saw the 3g symbol though.

  • http://cutebidet.com morgan chiu

Paying for mandatory 3G (G1 and Cliq) without actually receiving the service is agonizing. Mobile, AL should be tied to the gulf coast from Pensacola, FL to Panama City, FL. I’m still waiting..

    • watbetch

Data does not = 3G. Stop being so ignorant. You pay the same price as everyone else with a smartphone. You still get charged if you don’t use it like everyone else too.

      • Matt

But what he’s saying is that it sucks paying for data that COULD be 3G. He’s paying a flat-rate data fee, and while most of us are sucking down 300k+ data speeds for $20/month, he’s paying the same amount and only getting EDGE.

      • watbetch

And blackberry pearl 8120 users COULD be getting 3G if they had the new 9100 or 9700 but still have to pay $30!

  • rushmore

Rats. I work in Lexington and did not know. Back in non 3g area for the weekend, since where I live has 3G for At&t, Sprint and Verizon, but not Tmo.

  • JDT

I live in the “pocket” area bounded by Tates Creek Road & New Circle Road and I don’t have 3G service. If you get right out of that “pocket” area, every other part of Lexington has 3G, what gives? :-(

  • Stephen

Anyone live around the Mastersonstation Park area in Lexington? I’ve been considering upgrading to a Nexus One, but would like to know what kind of coverage to expect. I work downtown, so there shouldn’t be a problem there…

  • http://www.nathanaelc.com nathanaelc

    Acckkkkk!!
    Lexington!

    So close!

(Please my town, please my town…….)

  • Carlos

Hey guys!!!!! Do you know if t-mobile is planning to upgrade its network in Puerto Rico. Still with edge. Love the services and devices but the lack of speed is killing me. Please tell me something!!!!!! Txs!!!!

  • Brett

T-Mo sucks in Lexington. I have a rooted Nexus One that is updated to the latest and newest software/upgrades but the 3G coverage is nonexistent. I live about 1 mile from downtown Lexington and I think T-Mobile is totally lying about rolling out 3G here.

I am going with Sprint when the EVO 4G comes out. I am quitting on T-Mo after 10 years. Hey, T-Mobile, KISS MY ASS!
