Some More 3G For Breakfast Today?

grand-rapids

Update: Tulsa looked to be a false alarm, Grand Rapids you are golden!

While the Google Phone may be the dominant story in the days to come, let us not forget that there are other happenings in the Magenta world. Ask the folks in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Tulsa, Oklahoma who have stormed my inbox this morning with reports of active 3G service. No word yet as to whether these are official launches so the service could turn itself off just as quickly but for now, judging by volume, residents and customers of these cities have a new reason to rejoice this morning.

    David,

I saw your twitter post about Madison, WI a while back, and I wanted to add that my friend who lives there says he has been getting 3G once in a while on his G1. Did you hear what is going on there?

    • David

I haven’t heard anything regarding an official launch no, but I’ll keep looking into it!

      • chzhed

any news is welcome – a few of us moved here with t-mobile service and stuck it out until the roaming got unbearably bad (coinciding with ATT’s 3G launch). back then you couldn’t even get t-mobile service (website would say it wasn’t a serviced area) and that seems to have changed fairly recently… (no clue when though). non-roaming voice coverage a little further west and 3G, and i will call ATT and terminate early and come back home. to think… i was a omnipoint/voicestream customer and kept it up until 1.5 years ago…

I woke up to 3G this morning in the Florence & Muscle Shoals area of Northwest Alabama. While driving to work this morning my phone displayed the preparing SD card message and I then noticed the 3G icon. Also got the Android market update with the T-Mobile tab of recommended apps.

    • jak2black

nice to hear i found a friend on the forum that lives near me..(sorta)
im living in the huntsville area

  • Marianne

I’m in Grand Rapids and noticed 3G show up last night on my phone and it’s been up since. With the other testing I’d see it briefly and then poof it was gone, so it seems like this might be official now.

  • John

Very cool! I was in GR last weekend and sorry I missed out on the 3G goodness. Welcome to the best and soon to be fastest 3G network in the country!

  • CZA

Yay for GR and Tulsa! Still no 3G in Idaho to report though.

  • Wade

I’m on the edge of tulsa (cherokee industrial park) and don’t have 3G yet. Can anyone tell me what part of town has confirmed coverage?

  • Jeff

I am in tulsa near woodland hills mall and I dont have any 3g service yet either…Wonder where it is?

  • mmaxsooner

Well if 3g was on in tulsa it’s a test. Drove from far south tulsa to just north of downtown, no 3g signal in any area, so they may have tested, but its not live. If, when it goes live anywhere I will post back that its a go.

  • http://deleted kendrix_myrealname

    Comgrads! Welcome to 3G. Enjoy

  • cdb

I am on the east side of Tulsa (near the Hard Rock.) No 3G over here.

  • tdiggitydog

I have been waiting so long for this in GR. FINALLY! Anyone know how to test my speed?

    • Marianne

There’s a speedtest.net app for Android. I was getting about 600kbps down/430kbps up by yesterday evening. When my phone first indicated 3G the night before it was official I got about 350 down/200 up. Sounds like they were bumping it up as the day went on. I updated a ton of apps in Market to bring them to the latest revisions and they downloaded and installed before I could select the next app to update. Love it. I’m using a Motorola Cliq and love that as well. Thanks Tmo! :)

  • carlos

I live in ocala florida and I have 3g service with my motorola cliq

  • NCole

Ok my fellow Tulsans, I HAD 3G THIS MORNING FROM 2 TO AROUND 4, I WAS ENJOYING EVERY MOMENT!!(I even wrote it on the where wall) However, when I woke back up for work NO MORE 3G!!! BAD JOKE TMOBILE:( Tear

    • fort

Then you were only seeing a test.PS, nice pic for MD..

      • NCole

        Thanks Fort:)

    • kendrix_myrealname

Wow ncole your cute. Nice to meet you. I’m in Texas

  • Chris

Finally, 3G in Grand Rapids! I didn’t notice it because I had my wireless turned on. tdiggitydog, download the Speedtest.net app from the Market.

    • tdiggitydog

      awesome. thanks!

  • Ed

WHERE IS LOUISVILLE??? I can’t believe that someone at Tmobile can’t or won’t explain how they could set a date (the 11th) and then nothing!

    • Max

I hear ya, still waiting to hear what the deal is. It wouldn’t be as painful if we hadn’t heard (mind you not from Tmobile directly, but still) an exact date and then been skipped over without a word.

  • Mark

Auburn, AL now has 3G as well!!!

    • Bteague13

Auburn has 3G? Goodness I can truly say I’m proude of T-Mobile!!!! I thought Auburn would be one of the last places to get 3G. I can’t wait to get back to school now.

    • Dwayne

Thanks Tmo I been waiting for auburn to get 3G for the longest.

  • jam456

must have been a test here in tulsa it was great while it was on though

  • sam

had 3G in Temple, TX for about 5 minutes the other night at about 1AM. sadly, it hasn’t been back since. :(

    • Mark

The reps at the the store in Temple said it would be on before the end of the year. I saw EDGE once back in September one night. Too bad Tmo has bad coverage in Belton/Temple area or I’d still be with them.

      • Shanna

Really? I called tmo and they said they didn’t see us on the map to get it. I went to killeen and had 3G…left harker heights and was back to GPRS.

      • sam

had 3G in Harker Heights and Killeen over the weekend. I figured if Killeen had 3G it would reach all the way to Temple.

  • Stew Ives

I am seeing 3G in Auburn, Al this afternoon!

  • David

    Test test

    • Max

      Test is a success

    • Mr. Stacy R. Parr

      Testing too.

      • Mr. Stacy R. Parr

Many congrats to Grand Rapids, Michigan! (-:

And, to everyone in Tulsa, Oklahoma — including mmaxsooner — at least TMO is testing in your city, so your official 3G launch can’t be too far behind! (-:

      • Mr. Stacy R. Parr

I’ve been trying for two hours to submit all of that in one posting, but the site never took it. LOL
At least I finally was able to post it in separate posts — sheesh!

      • mmaxsooner

Testing my patience, by golly, well at least they are testing the equipment. Parr thx for the update. The half million peeps in tulsa metro may not be that large population wise but get tulsa and lville on and tmob is that much closer to their 200 mill end of year number. Now flip that switch and don’t forget bronco ville in idaho.

  • Nick

Tulsa- Had 3g when I woke up this morning to go to work(3am), but went back to edge a few hours later, and has stayed on edge ever since

  • Nick

I woke up for work today in grand rapids michigan to find out that grand rapids, kentwood, wyoming, grandville, and finally byron center all went 3G today!!!! oh how sweet it is and might i add their 3G is fast! Nexus one i cant wait!!!!

  • mmaxsooner

    Flip that switch!!

  • http://www.i-appreciate.org alt-mobile

Glad to see Grand Rapids get 3G. Now how about getting it in the capital, Lansing and East Lansing, MI? I would think that would make sense since Michigan State is such a big school, it would definitely increase their sales around here.

Sucks that I moved from Chicago where I had amazing service and speed to East Lansing (for graduate school) and hit some really bad spots where I have no reception.

    • Timo

We’ve had 3G in Lansing/East Lansing for months now.

    • Timo

Where do you have no reception? The only places I have no reception are in a few labs with lots of electronics, and in the grocery store at Harrison and Trowbridge.

  • Tgre

I think Tmo may be testing in my area. I live in Myrtle Beach, SC and have seen the 3g icon on and off pretty much all day on my BlackBerry Bold 9700. I sure hope this is true, anyone who lives in the same area as me feel free to give your status if you noticed anything.

    • http://www.reverbnation.com/youngquazy Quay

I live in Myrtle Beach, SC also and have been getting 3g all day. I have a T-mobile G1

  • Eric

Odd, today for the first time in Detroit my unlocked/debranded TM506 showed “3G”, up until today it showed an “H” witch I assumed meant my debranded phone did not have the correct graphic to show “3G”, Guess not. Speeds have not changed, just the graphic on my phone, so it must be Tmobile pushing something different in the signal.
    E

    • Bill48105

I’m pretty sure H (HSDPA) is faster than 3G (UMTS) so you got a downgrade. LOL

      • Eric

Tonight it is back to “H” they must be messing with the system.

  • http://www.berryreview.com donluig

we got 3G in the Northwest Arkansas Area this past saturday check out this picture I sent to you guys on twitter http://tweetphoto.com/6310661

  • rolltide09

Auburn is behind tuscaloosa again! RollTide!

  • Rick

LOUISVILLE! LOUISVILLE! Get T Mobile off their butts and give us 3G. And if the rumor about Fort Knox being the hold up is true, forget them They aren’t Louisville!

  • Wilco

What the heck?!?!? What does a 3G test in Tulsa mean? How can TMO continue to NOT offer 3G in Tulsa? I’m getting real sick of it.

    • mmaxsooner

They are testing and optimizing the network, seems they are testing all over ttown. I was on 3g at 101st street, then went edge then 3g then edge again. My wife works next to woodland mall and she said she’s been 3g all morning. I’m on my way to downtown and its 3g edge 3g edge back and forth. Wierd because I am not dropping calls while it flips back and forth. Getting closer ever closer to true 3g

  • rolltide09

had 3g speeds this morning in Tulsa around 7:20 am although my phone still said edge

    • NCole

Same Here Just went of like 10 min ago!!!! 7:50am!!

      • fort

        Drop me a data dime.

  • NCole

    This is DRIVING ME NUTZ!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Mel

I have been on 3G all morning in South Tulsa. Went from 91st and Memorial to 81st and Garnett, now at 41st and Sheridan. The speed is awesome!

  • Shane

I have also been on 3G all morning in Tulsa!

  • Wilco

Yes! After all my complaining, Tulsa has 3G. At least today. I drove from home (91st and Garnett area) to downtown, and have maintained 3G. I downloaded one of the Cyanogen mods, and it downloaded at about 90kbps, slower then I expected but certainly faster than Edge. Went to Tulsaworld.com to check photo downloads and I was pleasantly surprised to see better results.

  • mmaxsooner

These results are from tulsa downtown area 10am. Note wifi turned off. Woot! 3g! Here are the Speedtest results for my Blackberry: 9700

    Connection Type: Carrier
    Avg. Download Speed: 3316.74Kbits/s
    Max. Download Speed: 3335.25Kbits/s

    Avg. Upload Speed: 33.55Kbits/s
    Max. Upload Speed: 93.1Kbits/s

    Chico, CA
    Topeka, KS
    Omaha, NE
    Clarksville, TN

  • tmogeek

Well I have 3G for breakfast today too. I live in central Illinois. Peoria has had 3G since the end of September. I live in Pekin which is about 7 miles south of there. I have been edge only. The last few days the network has been fluctuating anywhere from very little signal to full bars to none at all. I was in Peoria the last 2 days and the 3G was doing the same. The last time I saw this was just before 3G lit up in Peoria. I now have 3G in my little town! And it is going very consistent and strong signal. Hats off to Magenta and keep on expanding the network! One satisfied T-Mo customer here. Mmmmmmm Love that 3G goodness.

  • Louis

anyone know the launch date for louisville, ky now?

  • jeff

i think louisville is on now. i live over on hurstbourne and i have a 3g signal.

    yay!!!

  • Michael Houghton

Came to Grand Rapids but skipped saginaw AGAIN? It’s official, T-Mobile is the most useless network in my city. I’m absolutely thrilled with GPRS, dropped calls, poor signal strength, and NO 3G.

I’m about ready to unlock and jump ship with AT&T, or maybe even go CDMA :(
