HTC 2009 lineup leaked, G2 included

Posted by David On January - 12 - 2009

Update: I know quite a few of you are doubting the validity of this post and thats ok, its something I’ve learned to live with while blogging. However, I can assure you this picture is as real as the computer you reading this from. Nobody knows if this phone will ACTUALLY be named the G2, only that it is expected to be android device. For all we know T-mobile could name this phone the “Robert” after the benevolent CEO and it wouldn’t make any difference. Calling it the G2 is simply the best way to identify it as a G1 successor. I have removed the myfaves line because upon closer inspection it is entirely possible that the icon I thought was myfaves, was indeed the home button. We had to blow this picture up a million times so forgive me on that note. That said, the icon is irrelevant to the argument that this phone is indeed a future T-mobile android device. End of song.

A few moments ago a story leaked through engadget to the gadget freaks of the world and inside that information is something you guys have ALL been clamoring for…possible sighting of the G2. Not this G2. I’m talking about code-name Sapphire, the very same prototype we have hinted about before…the picture from the leaked HTC lineup and the image we have are identical, save for color. Specs, pricing all unknown variables at this point, for the moment however just take a moment to enjoy the future possibilites for touchscreen android goodness!

Looks good right, codename sapphire?? How about this…

sapphire

In fact lets blow it up so you get a little better glimpse at the device itself…

android-sapphire

Wait, there’s more leaked info coming out of this HTC lineup leak!

That is of course assuming any of you got this far…I’m sure some of you are salivating over the G2…

tungsten

Wing II maybe right there, our lips are sealed…take that for what its worth! Maybe the guys at phonedog have a better answer!

We’re still investigating for which one of those is the Dash II, not to be confused with the revamped dash currently available. Details are forthcoming!

    Ahhhh…the beans!

G2 looks to be the real deal. I’m still not convinced on the Tungsten being the Wing 2. Maybe a different series device, but not in the “Wing” family. Great post altogether though!

@LipGloss: The G2 is without a physical QWERTY keyboard (hence why you don’t see it). It is completely touch meaning there will be an onscreen QWERTY keyboard.

I can’t wait for this device. I really really can’t. It looks nice, not quite touch hd-ish, but looks even more functional.

  6. LipGloss712 says:

@GP ah I see. Thanx. In that case it seems like the screen should be a little bigger and not so much “chin.”

On the original post (at forums.ppcgeeks.com) they have pictures of a phone labeled Maple (3G Excalibur). We all know that the original HTC codename for the S620/T-Mobile Dash was Excalibur so i guess we know what the Dash II is :D

    [Reply]

  8. V4 says:

Maple = Dash 2? It is called excalibure
Citrine has a T-mobile logo as I can see but its probably for Europe
    Tungsten = Wing 2? maybe
Sapphire = G2 according to the story above
Hero = unbranded android phone for the world?

That’s all my eyes tell me

I hope there is something wrong with my eyes, but from what I can see the possible G2 doesn’t seem to have a 3.5mm headphone jack… It looks to have the same extusb port as the G1. If that’s true then it will also require an adapter for my shure headset. That’s just unacceptable! Don’t they understand that some of us want to stop carry around iPods? HTC, please help me divorce myself completely from Apple and add a 3.5mm headphone jack. PLEASE!

  19. T1 connect says:

    Specs anyone please. Someone

  20. PHug says:

Until we see some specs these pics mean nothing.

What’s if they are just old Winmo 6.1 instead of Android or Winmo 6.5 or 7?

What if they are **** resistive low-res screens instead og VGA/ WVGA compacitive goodness?

What if HTC cheaped out and loaded these with old slow processors and low ram??

WHAT IF THEY DON’T HAVE T-MO 3G?!? like the Dash remix and blackberry 8900?

Don’t get too excited yet people

Oh well its still good news for others.

No offense guys, ill try out an android device by another manufacture. Its just a personal reference.

None the less its still good news.

  26. Vaddy says:

@ Snowy, don’t fret just yet bro, Samsung already announced they are going to make an android based device for T-Mobile and Sprint.

  27. Ace says:

ok..so the “Wing II” I read on http://www.gsmarena.com that Tmobile will be calling it the MDA Vario IV & as for worrying about it being a ‘cheepo’ Not so – I researched all the phones coming out for the last year & assure you the specs are off the chart- making the G1 & the Iphone look dinky. Its like a laptop with the speed & capability

    [Reply]

  28. Armo says:

this is great news and all but, why are they so ugly? lmao
hopefully this is NOT the final product and they make it look nicer. both of them but mainly the sapphire aka g2. and is it just me or is the sapphire REALLY fat for being keyboard-less?

    [Reply]

  29. James says:

Hmm..i hope that’s not the G2. I like the form factor but I believe getting rid of the QWERTY keyboard is a mistake. I was hoping for a keyboard in the vein of the Sony Xperia. I dont know why everyone thinks a on screen keyboard is so good. The G2 will just become another iPhone clone. Even Palm realizes a physical keyboard is good idea, it adds character.

    [Reply]

  30. soviet says:

@armo, i dont think they r ugly. i think they are all look nice. watch out apple and nokia, htc is getting stronger.

    [Reply]

  31. silverghozt says:

ugh, i pray that’s not the g2. that curve at the bottom is seriously annoying and makes for a bulkier device unnecessarily. bad move.

    [Reply]

  32. Marc says:

It’s because t-mobile customers are destined to get the ugliest available htc phones at the time they’re released armo. Out of all those phones on the list, I sincerely hope this isn’t the g2. If that’s the g2, I don’t know.

  33. robert says:

Yabba dabba dooo over nothing until its been proved. I refuse to get hyped like I did with the G1.

  34. Joseph says:

Can’t wait for that G2! Aesthetically, I think it looks great. I just hope its hardware can back it up.

    [Reply]

  35. marc says:

I hope the g2 has a physical keyboard on it because that was the killer thing that made me get the g1

    [Reply]

  36. Snowy says:

@vaddy thx bro. Im aware an waitin. Im picky wit hardware an design. I never liked samsungs mobile interface but wit an android thats good stuff + tmobile 3G.

Is the device ugly? Yes as always.
First off its an HTC device, thats just my personal opinion. Others like it. So its a like it or hate debate.
Another note on the G1, my first initial taughts was its ugly till i played wit it. In the end i liked the form factor even wit the chin, without the slide, an liked the touch of the rubber feel on the back similiar to the nokia n95. Its still ugly, but if polished up an wit out the slide it have been a nice piece of work. Just my opinion.

Second its a carrier device an price must be considerd! While at the moment all manufacturers are makin cuts on mateireal an design, on a carrier sold device i guess more cuts are made to make it feasabile to the consumer.

Its just makes sense. If we all wanted high end material an form we would have to fork up more cash.

In the case of the iphone being considered at a cost $200 is a wrong assumption. The actual device price is $600.
Outside the US you will find it priced between $600-$1000.

All aspects of a device should be takin into consideration.

Another fun fact would be the assumption that android OS is free. While yes its free, it costs the manufacturers to custom work on the hardware an other dev sorts for the OS To work.
An example would be it would cost samsung to get the OS to work wit thier device design, specs, an UI.
Basically like any opensource project, support costs are required.

Aw man if that’s the G2 I’m going to feel really stupid. I just bought my G1 on the 31st. But then again, I don’t see a keyboard or am I blind? If it doesn’t have a keyboard then I wouldn’t have bought it either way.

  38. brandon says:

wooowowowowwwow i sont like it lol were the heck is the keyboard grrr and it looks uhh ike g1 but not g1 one like an alien weird plz not be it but if it is ill still buy lol

  39. JJ says:

“In fact lets blow it up so you get a glimpse at the myfaves symbol in the lower left corner”
That is not a myfaves button on that G2… That is the Android home button.
The two in between red and green phone are menu and back.
This leads me to confirm, in my head, that it is most definitely the T-Mobile G2. Same rollerball as the G1 and everything!

    @ brandon

hahaha WOW! ur a weirdo, but funny. lmao

  41. The_Bluprint says:

Sorry Ace you are wrong, The MDA Vario IV was the name for the German touch pro, The Tungsten will be the WING II. ALL the new 2009 devices look really good if you ask me.

    [Reply]

  42. G_PAR says:

That alleged “myFaves” icon looks more like a house for a home button… just saying

    [Reply]

  43. T1 Connect says:

remember when we first saw the g1 being demo’d @ that press conference, look at the g1 now. notice any differnce, no? well i do, the keyboard. the first g1 had no keyboard in the demo version of the phone but after a while out of nowhere. boom! a physical keyboard appeared for the g1. now what i’m thinking is maybe the samething applies for the g1 because it is too thick not to have one.

    [Reply]

  44. ChampagneDreams says:

@T1 i think you meant to say the G2

    [Reply]

  45. blasphemy says:

G2 with no keyboard = fail. Why even bother with the G2(if it has no keyboard) when it will most likely lack compared to an iphone.

Rhodium or Tungsten with Android == YES YES YES YES!

Saphire with Android == Not interested. Not even a little.

  47. Seriously? Once again… I will stand corrected if it happens but the G2 is NOT coming out in 2009, unless its like december/june area (Q4)

    [Reply]

  48. BubbleBurst says:

Uh, have seriously none of you noticed that “myfaves icon” in the bottom left isn’t a myfaves icon at all? It’s the standard “Home” icon that is found on pretty much any HTC device. Look at the “Home” icon on your g1 and then look at that pictue again. It’s obviously not a myfaves icon.

    [Reply]

    David Reply:

@Bubble, you indeed may be correct, but it remains irrelevant to the argument that this phone is indeed a future Android device. I have appended the post to reflect this.

  49. David says:

If this is truly the g2 then hats off to HTC! It looks like it would be more comfortable to hold in your hand as it is not as “square” as the G1 is. I’m in cleveland Ohio and we do not have 3G yet. When we do finally get 3G here i will probably get this device!

  50. domiiniicano says:

I really don’t think that they would do away with the hardware qwerty keyboard on the G2! It wouldn’t make any sense.
