The blurrycam strikes again..

Posted by David On December - 8 - 2008

Rumors have swirled about an 8 megapixel camera phone headed to T-mobile. We can confirm its existence and and we’ve discussed so here. The alleged big brother to the Samsung Behold is said to sport an 8 megapixel camera along with the same user interface as the Behold, Touchwiz. The rest of the feature set is a mystery at this point, along with a price point but we can guess that what could end up being the first 8 megapixel camera phone in the US could carry a modest price tag. Expected to carry the name “Memoir,” this is no smartphone as the Touchwiz interface doesn’t have the flash and whiz-bang of Android or OSX and with that, expect no wifi. Keep in mind though, that’s just a guess and an uneducated one at that. 3G is of course expected to be on board, along with a (hopeful) full html browser. Samsung Behold anyone??

Thanks to our anonymous tipster/picture sender!

For a close up look at a European variant, the “Pixon” head on over to Phonedog.

If the 8 megapixel camera on this one is trash like the 5 megapixel junk on the Behold, they can keep it. The Behold is a major disappointment. The camera is the feature that lured me to it for my wife…thought she’d love it. And the camera has turned out to suck worse than any camera on any phone I’ve ever seen…except my G1 which is worse.

You ask for more megapixels, they’ll keep squeezing more onto that tiny sensor. When folks stop demanding that, camera image quality will improve.

I don’t understand why the have to change everything…
they changed the F480 into the Behold…
now they change the Pixon into the Memoir…
All the reviews on the Pixon are great, why can’t they use the same exact device…
From these blurry shots I already know the looks of the Pixon were far better…. my hope is that they will leave the features the same (including the webbrowser, the divx coding, etc…)

hmm looks like a neat device but im a dedicated android user and i wont buy another phone til g2 for my self however this phone is a very likey canidate for a gift for my girlfriend, she uses her 7 mp standalone camera alot and uses her phone alot as well, and she can text and drive with this thing ( tho i tell her she is a weetard for doing that) so when this baby drops next year ill probably get her one….

crazy how tmo was first carrier with android, first carrier with 5mp camera (2 actually) even if it was for only a week or 2 til the delve and ominia came out, and now were gonna be the first carrier with a 8mp camera phone in the U.S….. i know the nokia N series phones had 5mp cams but they were not tied to carriers, so its really starting to pay off waiting for the little guy to evolve, im thinking were gonna takeover the # 3 spot soon as sprint is horible and tmo just keeps pushing the envelope.

Still don’t understand that it is almost 2009 and the US cell market continues to get re-branded (read crippled) sub-par devices that are obsolete by the time they are released.

Willing to put money on the fact that this device will not have wi-fi or a descent document viewer.

I first heard of the Pixon last month and fell in love with it. This new device is pretty cool, I was just getting use to the way the Pixon looked, but I really like the way this looks. I was feeling a little guilty for giving up on BlackBerry, but now I can’t wait to try something a bit more consumer friendly.

US consumers prefer subsidized phones, only a few % pay the full retail price so phone makers have no incentive to introduce better devices here.

however, i feel the main culprit here are the carriers, with expensive plans that make cheaper subsidized phones alluring to folks.

does anyone have experience with european fares and US fares and how do they compare? want to see if my theory stands true.

i sincerely hope this doesn’t become as big of a disappointment as the behold.

and as Ran got into above, its not until people realize that its not the number of megapixels that produces an excellent picture, we wont be getting good camera/phones. 8MP sounds nice, but i bet it still wont compare to a decent standalone digi cam.

and last but no least, congrats to tmonews for being the first to release these pics. other blog sites around the interweb are using these branded pics in their articles today.

the screen looks bigger then the behold. thats a plus?

i hope this isn’t EXACTLY wat it looks like. they could make it looks nicer considering this is the successor to the behold and the behold looks really nice. also, the pixon has the jog stick. where is it on this!?!? =/

  20. Snowy says:

    True.
If its goin to be a high end imaging device it might as well be a nokia or sonyericsson. Besides that dont even bother. Carl Ziess lens, sony cybershot tech makes a huge difference in mobile imaging. I owned a track record of the worlds winning image device. Nokia n80 (2006), n95(2007), n82(2008) or was it the samsung innov8(running on symbian).

  21. WXman says:

I understand pixels….10 megapixels is only going to make the picture more “dense”, meaning that if you blow it up HUGE it will stay sharper than a 2 megapixel picture. I understand that concept.

What ticks me off is that they advertised the Behold based on it’s camera. They made a big deal about it’s camera. Made it sound like it was going to be a “first” in the country…etc. etc. And the truth is, the camera SUCKS. That’s all I’m saying.

So from now on, they can advertise whatever they want. If they say they have a 30 megapixel camera, it won’t get my attention until I get to use it and see if it’s worth a ****.

This is a phone man…stop making digital cameras with phone capabilities. Show off some flash capabilities, document viewing, editing, they need to start producing more phones similar to the android not making these wack phones with spiffy cameras.

    Blackberry news??? Anyone??
