Shadow II unveiled by FCC!

The eagle eyed guys at phonescoop came up with this little FCC goody today, approval for the Shadow II. Previewed before, this new images does fall in line with the aesthetics we have seen before as the  Shadow II or Shadow 2009, whichever name comes to pass. A number of T-mobile reps have reported low inventory levels of the current model Shadow in retail stores and wonder if that’s to make way for this new device which has seen a release date anywhere from October 15th to early next year.

Current features are listed as windows mobile 6.1, a faster processor than the previous version and phonescoop picked up battery times for both uma and gsm giving strong indication that the unit will work with T-mobiles hotspot calling. Other features listed fall pretty much in line with the current Shadow with a 2.6-inch QVGA display, spinning scroll wheel, slide-out 20 key text keyboard, 2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, microSD memory card slot, and quad-band GSM/EDGE.

If you can find your away around FCC docs (and I give you credit for being able to do so) phonescoop has the link. I’m sure more goodies about the device lie hidden inside those docs.

Pricing and release date are still anyone’s guess…though last we heard was $149.99 after rebate.

On another note, a few emails have come in regarding the androidcommunity blog post and why we haven’t posted the “new” info front and center on the blog. We did, back on October 27th…so not to worry, you’re favorite T-mobile bloggers are still well on top of their game!

im likin the new look and color, im a current g1 owner but i came from a brown shadow, i was at one time really pumped for this phone until i got knee deep in android, but say g1 never came out but tmo’s current line up was still there with the shadow 2, i cant say i would get this device becuase im not a UMA user and it would pretty much just be a hardware refresh with the same camera specs and stuff, it would really take a big boost in processor speed for me to go back to this phone, i think they should have made it a 528mzh processor, 3.2mp camera w/flash, Refresh on the interface, and that would have made it a contender and a decent winmo device, being as we still have the freakin Wing on the maarket.

With every other major carrier spouting 3G Diamonds and Touch Pros, how’d we get stuck with this ****?

Ultra-slow processor, no 3G, entry level camera, no GPS, lowrez screen, no 3.5mm headset jack…

No 3G? No Touchscreen? Ughh… What is the hold up? Looks like its going to be a tight race to the end of my contract. Will Tmo put out a decent 3G Windows Mobile phone first, or will I switch to AT&T first?

I’m with benji on this one. Is T-Mobile getting stuck with the left overs? I want to see some more phones with 3G, and I want to see some new Blackberry phones too. I know the upcoming 8900 is no 3G, but at least its a step closer to being competetive.

  9. Armo says:

i was wishing that they had canned this since it was supposed to come out in the summer and the sadow 3 was to come shortly after and that they just replaced the shadow 3 with the shadow 2 and that the high end 3 would actually be the shadow 2. u follow?

im sure that there will be a shadow 3 like in Q1 or Q2. idk but ii get vibe that it’ll be something along the lines of a touch diamond dual but with the sprint touch diamond back instead of the diamond plated back.

idk maybe i dream too much. lol

the shadow should be a winmo phone for kids to learn how to use windows mobile. definetly not a phone for adults or worth $150.00 after rebate. ewwwwww.

I got my wife the Shadow and she loves it, but why would I shell out $150 for such a minor upgrade? I would consider it if it had:
    1. 3.5mm jack: I own a dozen adapters but never have one around when I need it…argh
    2. 3G
    3. Touchflo 2D at min

Her contract is up in Feb: get on it T-mobile! Love your service but not your phone selection

For some reason, I just prefer the original Shadow than the II (loved the Copper/Brown).

I’m amazed as to how flat the rear is; thought they would’ve tried to curve it a bit.

    Yawn….

Color me unimpressed. Nothing more than some cosmetic changes and a very minor processor boost.

  18. escentz says:

    ROTF @ David. Aw, shucks!

Why is everyone criticizing this phone? I mean, really, it can’t be worse than the current Shadow. I think it will be nice for older teens to learn how to use WinMo like T1 said.

  19. Steve says:

This looks like a big disappointment already, if you already own a shadow.

    UPGRADES
UMA, (260MHZ CPU vs 201MHZ Shadow 1), and windows 6.1

Im guessing over half of T-Mo customer dont use UMA, but a nice feature regardless and thats pretty much it. If you have a little tech savy you can put win6.1 on the current shadow and 260 vs 201 CPU will not be that much difference since the phone has the same exact ROM/RAM as Shadow I.

All of T-Mo competitors are using 400 or 528 Mhz CPU in similar non touch phones now. Shadow 2 has the same okay 2MP camera and same SLOW usb1.1 port, so if you bought the shadow when it first came out, you will wait 15 months for pretty much the same exact phone with very minor upgrades.

Theres no reason T-Mobile should not have tried to use the Touch Dual hardware since it is very similar to the Shadow design wise.

So way to go T-Mo with your continued efforts of mediocre and crippled phones. I wont even start on the upcoming Dash 2 or Wing 2 whenever it actually does come out.

my question is why the hell didnt we get that USB 3.5 mm adapter for the G1 and the Shadow did? thats plain stupidity

    [Reply]

  21. T1 Connect says:

@steve say it aint so. dont tell me the wing2 and dash2 both have crappy specs, thats gonna break my heart. im waiting on the wing2.

  22. TRobshi says:

This thing is going to be the same price as a Behold? And $30 less than a G1?? Why would anyone buy it?!?!

    [Reply]

  23. escentz says:

    LMAO @ sleepyyazo.

Yeah. The Shadow 2 gets the jack and the G1 didn’t. Hilarious.

    [Reply]

  24. T1 Connect says:

well then again remember when we first saw the g1 specs everyone said it had the same specs as the wing and it was changed a month later so maybe..just maybe they’ll change it.

what trash!-come on tmo!,bring on the n97!-enough of this htc ****.

    [Reply]

  26. robert says:

I guess they are going for phones that cost them less to buy and therefore makes them more profit. G1 could have come in a much nicer body but TMobile would have had to pay more and made less profits on it. Seems that’s the way they have been going.

    [Reply]

  27. ranida says:

agree for n97! Nothing compares. Focusing (closeup mode flash on) camera takes pic good enough can send it instead of trying to find fax when on the road. Saved enough to pay for it in less than a year :-)

    [Reply]

  28. sleepyyazo says:

I’m pretty sure they arent going to change any of these specs.
the rhetorical question for t-mobile is: Why release a phone after almost a year after you send it to the FCC? are they dee dee dee or wtf? or maybe the better question is if the 2nd android phone already been done since last year?

i agree, sick and tired of junk tmobile phones. behold is trash, shadow cant stand it, when i hear about another motorola i want to throw up, finally they picked up se, getting sick of g1. g1 with their lame market. there is nothing on it thats usefull, accept few programs. no sling player, no divx player. we need symbian. enough is enough. i f everyone will start calling tm and asking for it, maybe we could get something. i had n95, e61i, n82 all great phones but give me 3g with it. i am not regratting for getting g1 but should of get att and enjoy 3g on symbian. tmobile is great with call quality but phones sux. as again maybe its not tmo falt, i guess its just matter of time when nokia realize that tmo customers like nice phones too. may be thats why tmo honors e71, n95, n96 to show nokia that there is market for it, but than again what is it good for if it edge. who whants to use dial up when there is hi speed. am i right?

  33. -ray says:

I don’t think that TMO will get anything better any time soon. They have spent too much money on the G1 and want it to be their staple phone for a while. The sad thing is that it takes TMO so long to get new phones that by the time they get them another carrier has the next generation phone. The g1 is nice, but after looking at the tough and touch pro, it is down right ugly..

  34. alex says:

i also agree with lot of the comments here i think tmo is been left way back with this phones i always wanted a touch pro so probably im thinking to move to sprint when my contract ends or moving to att to get the i phone, is weird tht all service providers run on 3g network, yesterday i was watching a commmercial on CRICKET and they were announcing tht they have 3G, then i got dissapointed with tmo.

  36. mic414 says:

Take the shadow for what it is: an affordable, traditional winmobile phone. Personally, I like this format. For those touch-screen/3G fans, try to do the following:
    - forget about the charger for 2 days
    - speed dial someone in 2 seconds, without looking at your phone, as you’re pulling it from your pocket
    - type text on the touchscreen. I’ll beat you anytime on a regular T9 phyical keyboard.

In my opinion, touchscreen is just a fancy but mostly useless toy. It is naturally great for maps, but not much else. Have you even wondered why no computer comes with a touchscreen keyboard?

Of course, some people want that and sure, we should have phones for those folks who like toys (or instead of using the phone, browse google maps all the time). But the shadow is not intended for that purpose, so it’s pointless bashing it for not being something that it wasn’t intended to be in the first place.

I’m also sick of the G1 mania. It appears to me that tmonews morphed into g1news nowadays.

Everyone is right, TMob is really slow in releasing new, upto tech standards phones. I still have my htc SDA phone from 2 1/2+ years ago and it seems that it is about the same and can do the same things as this new shadow 2, it just looks older…So come on TMOB, get with the new stuff!
