Ah yes, going old school with Ruff Endz “No More” musical theme but that’s not what you are here to read about. Word coming out of the forums is that T-mobile has gone and done a great justice to the wireless world and removed the despised upgrade fees. While details are still sparse, effective “immediately” T-mobile will remove the upgrade fee from, well, upgrading and you are no longer bound to pay everytime you wish to upgrade your phone.
I really hope this is a customer focused move and we don’t wake up tomorrow reporting that phone prices have gone and increased 18 dollars. For the moment, however, we applaud T-mobile for removing this long despised charge and doing something that the customer can get behind.
“We have received feedback from you on behalf of our customers that the $18 Handset Upgrade Fee is a real customer diss atisfier. Based on your feedback, we are eliminiating the $18 Handset Upgrade Free effective immediately.”
now show us some good phones worth upgrading to
[Reply]
Awesome.
thatz good to hear
didnt they used to not have the fee because i remember a time when i didnt have to pay for it.
[Reply]
Will this apply to upfrades that were recently done? I got my G1 a little over a month ago and the upgrade fee is listed there on my bill. I guess I will call them up and see if they will.
[Reply]
that’s nice to know, but anyone have any info on the flash that’s coming for the G1?
[Reply]
THANK YOU T-MOBILE!!!!!!!!!!!
Now its not painful to wait on every customer that comes in going “I WANT A FREE PHONE!!!” since the free phones now are ACTUALLY FREE!
[Reply]
I work for T-Mobile Customer Service and I was at work this evening when the announcement came out. Myself and some of the other reps were estatic about it!! From what I can remember, if you have upgraded recently, Decemeber 4th through today, that you can call back and request the $18.00 be credited back to your account. This was a major road block for those of us working in customer service and now things will be going back to normal, meaning I was there before the upgrade fee came into effect. This is an excellent move for our customers!!
[Reply]
Yeah my friend who just upgraded to the pearl flip on monday didnt get charged the fee, so thats pretty cool. But what about those of us who just upgraded two weeks ago?
[Reply]
I don’t think you will bs refunded for upgradez in the past
[Reply]
Yes, now we are just starting to charge a 10 dollar restocking fee for anybody that wants to change out or return a phone besides those whom are new customers that are canceling during buyers remorse…I love explaining that one!
[Reply]
what!! i upgraded to the g1 today and still had to pay the upgrade fee! i guess i’ll be calling customer service
[Reply]
Customers still within their buyers remorse period (14 days or 30 in California) can have the store manager credit them back the $18.
[Reply]
I just called and got 2 phone upgrades credited. I did buy the phone within the past 14 days.
[Reply]
Good job T-mobile! Thank you.
[Reply]
*cheers* this is awesome..let’s top this off with BB news. Good job TMO
[Reply]
well i bought a new phone and it had the upgrade fee, but it wasn’t within two weeks. what about me?
[Reply]
Just called a min ago, and it’s been credited! T-mobile is great!!! 12/18/08 10.00am Eastern
[Reply]
i think this is a bad idea… they should keep the upgrade fees… when customers would ask me y they had to pay i would say to keep cost down so our plan prices do not have to go up… its 18 bucks they should keep it and let the people who whine and complain continue to whine and complain… they should enforce and keep the upgrade fee
[Reply]
@jay the last tmo informed us the prices of plans for tmobile are already going up especially the data plans. So apparently keeping costs down by charging upgrade fees proved to be ineffective after all. If they’re raising the plans why not waive that upgrade fee.
[Reply]
from I read on howardforums, it’s promo for this month and January
data users beware: if you’re OOC, and never do contract renewal after end of June, you’re under old T&C, which had very little restriction, the new T&C, however, has 10GB limit (ref “total internet price increase” thread in hofo
[Reply]
@Jay I’ve noticed that the plan prices have increased anyway and are now more or less the same as the other major carriers…
[Reply]
Yes everyone this is true. I am an RSR at a local TMo store and the Upgrade fee is GONE!… i had a lucky customer get a FREE phone.. i was actually excited because i didnt have to explain why their “free” phone was infact not FREE!. no more upset customers!
[Reply]
this is why i love my magenta.

[Reply]
Wow. Everyone has upgrades fees.
Here comes T-Mobile shaking the rafters.
Right on.
I am due for an upgrade. That $18 would not have stopped me, but it’s sweet to know it’s a non-issue now.
[Reply]
I would say less
[Reply]
This is why T-Mobile is #1 for me!!!!!
[Reply]
Now they need to get some phone worth upgrading to..
[Reply]
T-mobile hands down has the best customer service out of all the US carriers. They listen to their customers.. wow.. it feels weird saying that.
[Reply]
dude…they got no phones to upgrade to anyways…so it’s worthless…
[Reply]
LOL
Thank you, thank you.
You can find me in the Circus…
[Reply]
well maybe if I could upgrade to the 8900…but since tmobile yet has an 8900 on their website I think I’ll pass
[Reply]
I don’t think this is just a promotion, from what I’ve heard from our market manager, this is a permanant decision. However, the upgrade fee will still be in the system (it will just ring up as $0.00), so they could easily bring it back if they decided to at some point…
[Reply]
Hmmm wonder what we’re going to be charged for to make up for the lost revenue and the ability to offer upgrades after 30 days rather than making us wait to our contract dates are almost up.
[Reply]
Just pulled the trigger and ordered a Zn5. That makes 3 new phones this month, g1, behold, and now a moto. This will probably never happen again in my life.
[Reply]
Guys, they still charge way more for phones in general but there plans are good. I am thinking of leaving T-mobile, I have been a customer of them since 2000, when they were Voicestream in Seattle. I get bad service and the dropped calls are everywhere. Worst Part is that T-mobile USA is based in Bellevue, WA, across the lake from Seattle…and they can’t even get the service right here. There plans are becoming more expansive, and I suggest everyone take a look at Company discounts at Verizon and At&t, if you work for a big company you might get a discount. I would get 25% from Verizon and 17 from At&t, off the total plan, T-mobile will only do it for just my plan, not the total family plan and not including data, text messaging and ect. T-mobile: bad service, poor selection and expansive phones but good customer service. It does come to the point where it is the network that counts.
[Reply]
in actuality the price of the plans did not really go up the myfaves r higher but with an added feature of mobile to mobile… and the only data plans there were really changed were the tzones plans and the sidekick plans everything else is the same price there just 2 features rolled into one… so as i stated above the upgrade fee was a legitamate excuse to keep cost down
[Reply]
does this count as a change in contract so i can cancel? :p
[Reply]
If you did an upgrade between dec.3 and dec.17 and got charged the fee, then you can call customer service and they will credit the 18.00. if you ordered it before then they cannot, if you ordered the phone on the 18th then there is no way you could have been charged the upgrade fee unless it was an error because it was automatically taken out of our system on dec 17th and yes this is a permanent deal, not a promotion.
[Reply]
Didn’t work for me in CA, after only 18 days. First, the CSR told me that I had been with T-Mobile too long, and that the fee waive was only for newer customers!? Then, he stated that I needed a new line or type of service–not just a new phone. Anybody else experience this? I’m calling again tomorrow to verify these rules…
[Reply]
it looks like the upgrade fee suspension is temporary
by hofo member TmoBoyinAL, upgrade fee will come back in Jan
the member also said there’ll be a Samsung promo next week
except T919, all models will be $0 for 2 years
[Reply]
Thanks. Just called rep said credit given back to 12/4. I bought G1 on 12/1, and wife got new phone 12/6. At first rep said only one credit, then I said I got the G1 and she spoke with a sup and I got both wavied!!! Credit of $38.xx
[Reply]
The upgrade fees were just a reason to give better phones a free price. Now those same phones are just a little more expensive. Its crazy how people can get so upset by the wording of “Upgrade fee.” when in reality it made it so they had more phones to choose from than the Samsung T219 or the nokia 2610… the free phones a year ago. People act like cell phones are disposable technology. If you think about it its like expecting Nintendo or Sony to give you a console since your going to be buying their games.
[Reply]
Wuht does this mean ?
that i Could get a G1 for free If i already have a contract ?
pleasee answerr peeeps !
[Reply]
my favorite part is when they reinstate the fee
