Best Buy to carry unlocked subsidized handsets for T-mobile?

And I’m off, but this is my parting gift…

I have to say our disbelief when the picture after the jump first arrived in our mailbox was pretty strong, but then we took notice of two threads over at howardforums (and howardforums) which seemed to confirm that such a sale was indeed taking place. A few moments before I was about to post this, one of our forum users snapped this picture. I know this one at first glance seemed far fetched but at least a few tipsters have come forward all claiming this is going to be a future offering. So either this is one early April Fool’s joke T-mobile and Best Buy are crawling into bed with one another.

Picture after the jump!

The breakdown apparently works a little something like this, there are three available models at two sets of pricing, the obvious unlocked and unbranded full retail cost, or the unlocked and unbranded subsidized cost broken down as follows:

  • Nokia E71-2 Full Retail: $459.99 2yr contract w/T-Mobile: $199.99
  • Nokia N95-4 Full Retail: $759.99 2yr contract w/T-Mobile: $349.99
  • Nokia N96 Full Retail: $899.99 2yr contract w/T-mobile: $599.99

Some things to remember, none of these phones are available for usage on T-mobile 3G so you are relegated to all EDGE, all the time. The apparent and rumored launch date for this bountiful offer is November 16th at participating Best Buy mobile locations.

We’re definitely chalking this one up in the rumor column, still it’s worth posting just for the simple notion of how much we love subsidized pricing and unbranded phones even if it comes with the shackles of a contract.

I am one of the Best Buy Mobile Supervisors and I will look into this when I go back to work Thursday… the signs appear valid and have all the proper wording in the proper places… and that is also the correct/current Holiday ad in the holders up top. I haven’t heard anything about this yet but then again we don’t carry T-Mobile in our stores but the store down the way does so it will be easy to access the information to confirm for sure.

  • bustafone

    You must be kidding me.

This OLD news. Where have you been?

  • mafiaashish

no way even if it is going on sale who is going to buy for that price when they know it does not support band IV same as me now using a n95-2 whats the point?

  • bustafone

They have been doing this for weeks now.

  • jeff

only in select markets, large. In BB home town Minneapolis, they are selling the htc diamond, n95, etc. The cards dont refer to t-mobile activation. where were these from?

  • Kaminsky

    i didn’t know that…thanks for the info…

  • mingkee

unfortunately, BestBuy in NYC doesn’t sell T-Mobile contract, only togo

  • john

Best buy in ct started selling them I sold 2 of the nokia e71 we just got the 95 and 96 in they look so much better in person pics don’t do any justice

  • MUNDO

I HOPE THIS IS TRUE BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE SUPER COOL (TO HAVE THE OPTION OF GETTING SOME AWSOME NOKIAS)

  • rommel

hope this true, tmo is dragging there ass on high end nokias-not too sure on the bold anymore, whats up with all the damn data rates?

  • Armo

even tho its not a bad idea wouldnt it be better if tmobile just got these phones branded. i assume they’ll have to pay nokia some money to have these phones sold like this so might as well pay extra, get them in 3G and have like the best phones of all the US carriers.

  • Justin Williams

I took this picture and this listing is posted in the Oklahoma City (Crossroads Mall) location.

  • Alek

I HOPE THEY SUPPORT T-mobile 3G or else it’ll be F***in retarted! to pay that much and not get 3G.
    Anyone know please post it!

  • T1 Connect

    it does

  • T1 Connect

but they’re probably have att 3g signals not tmobile’s especially those nokias

  • Snowy

this is good news. Maybe not new news for example the nokia n90 & nokia 8801, but it never held down. Now hopefully it will stick. A non-branded unlocked device is the correct way to own a mobile handset(specific smartphone) = device manufactur support, not carrier and not a castrated OS + firmware because of carrier. Also gain full potential of ur moneys worth.

  • rommel

nokia is in love with att,not tmo-unless your in europe.

  • Snowy

    @rommel
Not so, but i do agree with you to some extent.
Tmos 3G network came from nokia siemens + tmo parent company is in good arms with nokia. Also i see this to be good news for tmobile users because it may build a stronger relation between nokia an tmo usa, so we get some dam 3G phones!

  • Andréas

This is great, one more step in the right direction and with the openess that t-mobile is promising it means freedom of choice

  • T1 Connect

tmo needs a 1900mhz aws signal bad keep the 1700 for exclusive phones with tmobile branding. unlocked phones get to use the 1900/2100 band that would be nice.

  • Eric in Cupertino

    “happie”

You’re telling me Best Buy marketing cant spell “Happy”

    FAIL!

I can get a better price locally anyway.

  • zak

    @ Eric in Cupertino…

I’m guessing it says “Happier Holidays.” I would assume that the marketing department would catch a typo like that.

  • ores

@Eric in Cupertino hey maybe it “said happiest holiday” U never knowLOL

  • john

I work for bby and it says happiest holiday

  • T1 Connect

i heard bb was having a storm presale. the thing is ever since the g1 had a presale evey one and thier mama is having one now. at leas t we tnobile customers no one thing we arent bandwagoners we are trend setters. believe that.

  • emm333arrddd

@T1 Connect: I agree. They’re making it hard to get phones that take full advandage of the UMTS HSDPA part of the technology that makes it “3G”. There’s a lot of other unlocked quadband phones out there by HTC, Nokia, Samsung, Sony/Erickson that have 3G but not on the TMoUS network. I’d love to have an N-85 or Touch Dual… the Dual is on sale unlocked and Best Buy in Denver. But what’s the point if I will only ever be able to use EDGE at max? 500 dollar paperweight? No thanks. What is it going to take for TMo to empower the user?

  • T1 Connect

they need more spectrum space bad they have the entire 1700 but they need a 1900 cause all those unlocked phone have that 1900/2100 why do we get half. they should bid on that spectrum up for sale and put some wimax on that, transfer the 1700 to the new spectrum and put a 1900 on the previous 17 . 3g for the 1900 and advanced net(wimax) on the 1700 that would be perfect for services strictly limited for tmo and tmo only. and if that’s not possible I sure hope we at least get some free net from the whitespace spectrum.

Those prices suck. I bought an new E71-2 from Amazon for $319.99. Of course it was a limited time Gold Box deal but that’s what I paid. I use a T-Mobile pre-paid plan but want to add a GPRS data plan if possible. It appears that one can’t combine prepaid voice with a data plan though. Sucks since I don’t actually make that many voice calls. My ideal plan would be pre-paid voice plan with GPRS data for under $35/month.

Thanks guys. I’ll check out the neighborhood store on my lunch break. Would BB allow me to renew my 2 year contract and get the E71-2 for 200$?

I bought the E71 for my daughter last week at amazon for 360$

  • http://twitter.com/EricE51 Eric in Cupertino

I went on my lunch break and the Sunnyvale store does have the unlocked E71-2 subsidized on T-Mobile. Easyfinders in Sunnyvale has a better price though.

  • T1 Connect

I just read an article that says tmo is skipping hsdpa and going straight to 4g that’s a good idea

  • Snowy

thats what ive said before in one of the posts. Also it was not clear in regards to tmobile usa specific but im for sure its parent company since they have been conducting testing.

  • T1 Connect

snowy i cant wait. the only company thats gonna be able to keep up with that will be sprint cause they have wimax. mashup att and verizon

  • http://www.wirelesstoyz.com Jeff

THIS IS NOT A T-MOBILE UNLOCK THING ITS A NOKIA PARTNERSHIP, NOKIA HAS PICKED STORES THAT ARE THE TOP PRODUCERS AND HAVE MADE THEM PARTNERS OF NOKIA MY STORE HERE IN VEGAS IS THE #1 WIRELESS TOYS IN THE COUNTRY AND IS ALWAYS TOP 3 IN TMO ACTIVATIONS SO WE HAVE BEEN CHOSEN, I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE E71

  • John

i dont know about all that all the bby stores in ct are selling them

  • Juan from San Diego

I managed to pick up an E71 for $199 as an upgrade.

    Here is my receipt:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/32332781@N04/3024178698/

It took some charm and patience but the young lady from BBY, after searching 2-3 minutes in the employee news, found the pricing.

  • ay wasup

I have a g1 [typing this from it right now] nd I gave up my sidekick lx for this hpone nd too b honest I prefer the sidekick cuz its simple n got bettr aim. theres alotta stuff on this g1 tht I dnt really use. also the lx is hella nicer then the g1 imo. so I wanted to kno is the 99$ lx w/ a contract only at best buy ? cus I was at tmobile the other day and it wasn’t that price.

  • Patrick

I just came from the BestBuy Mobile at 49th and 7th in NYC and it is $329 for it with a upgrade. They weren’t willing to check the system to see if there were any change to employee news either.
