Admittedly I’m not an Android user so I don’t keep up to speed on current releases of all the applications. One email caught my eye thought and this thread on the forum gave me a little more info. According to my information, the virtual keyboard on a program called “Qsearch” can only be used for specific functions within the application but I believe it shows the promise of future development. Obviously there is much to be said for implementation inside the the design of Android/G1 itself so it doesn’t require 3rd party add ons for a virtual keyboard but still, I’ll take what I can get.
According to our emailer, it can only be used for “The virtual keyboard can ONLY be used to search on google, type in a url, search on youtube, search on maps, search amazon, and search a dictionary website.”
Ok well, that isn’t quite what everyone is hoping for with regards to emailing and sms’ing, the two evident and obvious features with high demand. Still, if you haven’t seen this application it might be worth checking out if only to tease yourself with what could be.
Two more photos after the jump.
Thanks Zach!

The guy who wrote Qsearch is currently working on Qsms which will allow you to use the VK for SMS. That same guy found and pointed out to the public (on a different forum) some VK code he found hosted on google that is system wide. So it appears in the future you’ll have more than one VK to choose from

It’s a handy little app and I’ve been using for the last couple of weeks.
A couple of suggestions for improvement:
*I wish the keys were spaced out more in portrait mode. It’s still a little too easy to fat-finger the wrong key – especially one-handed.
*Needs a ‘clear all’ button to reset the text field.
*Would love a copy/paste function to take text entered in the search field and use it for other purposes
*Needs a ’saved searches’ or ’search history’ feature for frequently used searches.
Otherwise it’s a fantastic app.

Thank You TmoNews for displaying my pics and quote
. But anyways the Qsearch application is amazing, I was waiting for a virtual keyboard and a tease has arrived. I can’t wait for 2009 when the priced apps hit the g1. All of these free apps are previews before the feature presentation. The only thing I don’t like about the g1 is the battery life and the IM application is too simple but this phone is amazing besides that.

@MikeK re:”clear all’ button
Just hold down < “back space”

Google is working on this already. The code can be seen on their website:

To the poster above. That’s not Google, it’s just some guy making it and putting it on google’s open source page. Google’s will be totally different then that. His code is very similar to me but he took it one step up and made it for the whole phone. hopefully he’ll publish it before google gets theres out the door.

Google will HAVE to release it’s own virtual keyboard in order to have Android function on a touchscreen only phone. it will come in time and be fully functional.
