Host change

Just a quick heads up from the TmoNews Tech Guy…. the switch to our new host is nearing completion. As I’m sure you’ve noticed by now if you’re reading this, going to tmonews.com now redirects you to an interesting looking URL. Don’t worry! It’s not permanent, and you DON’T have to update your bookmarks or anything crazy like that. It may take a few days for the URL in your address bar to go back to normal, but for now feel free to use any tmonews.com link as it will work and redirect you to the appropriate place. Ok, maybe not… give it a few days :(

Oh woe is G1 data…

facepalm

Well today today marks the end of the one week free data period offered by T-mobile for those who pre-ordered the G1. Some customers report their data plan has been switched off by an obvious technical glitch inside T-mobile somewhere that is reverting them back to their previous data plan held prior to G1 ownership. *Warning, facepalm alert!*

Apparently the paid service which is necessary to access the phones features is not added on, thereby stranding G1 users without any data access. Just imagine grown men breaking down when they realize their Gmail isn’t syncing, which is quite the crisis if I do say so.

Fear not, the fix is quick and can be done via a quick call to T-mobile’s award winning customer care or by mytmobile and re-adding the feature all on your own. Imagine that, you can fix the problem all on your own, I just love it when that happens.

Have you suffered from this data debacle? Let’s hear if you’ve been affected in the comments.

Washington DC to usher in T-mobile 3G!

washington-dc-0007

Forgive us for the late announcement, however last night we began the process of moving to our new host. With that we took the blog offline for a while so this announcement comes a little later than we had hoped.

With that little tidbit out of the way, Washington D.C. a city that needs no introduction is proud to be announced as the newest member of the magenta 3G family! As was the case with Detroit this week, a number of users are reporting faster than usual speeds and reports of 3G icons popping up in areas in and around DC.

T-mobile continues to roll out its 3G network systematically and efficiently and we are proud to continue announcing those launches. We can all be excited for these cities and easily agree that having faster speeds and improved voice quality just goes more to the point of why we love magenta, the little carrier that could!

G1 unlocked…free to roam about the cabin

Let me preface this by saying that while the phone may be unlocked, for the you can pretty much just make and receive calls and text. While I don’t think there is a doubt in anyone’s mind most of the phone’s capabilities will soon be available to AT&T users, for the moment its pretty much just the doldrum talk and text.

Two quick updates…

18update1

UPDATE: Walmart stores will NOT be receiving the G1 till November 3rd due to shipping delays!

I’m in a little bit of a rush so I’ve decided to condense two entries into one. Yesterday we ran a story via Engadget regarding Walmart and sales of the G1. While the original article stated a “launch” date of November 24th, that has since been revamped to, well, tomorrow. Purchasing the G1 from Walmart will still net you a savings of $31.11 as Walmart is undercutting T-mobile directly and selling the G1 at a discounted offering of $148.88. Can you just imagine a bunch of middle aged Walmart corporate types sitting around in a room trying to come up with a price for this? Did they just throw darts at dartboard and voila, we have pricing?!

Regardless, 550 stores nationwide will begin a sales rollout tomorrow and you can happily make you way to your nearest Walmart and save just enough to pay for half a tank of gas. Pricing is good for new or qualified upgrade customers! Yeah for Walmart!

Via CNN Money

Tonight’s second story comes via the G1 again, and is coming by way of androidcommunity by way of us actually. G1 users were thrilled to hear about an update coming their way which was bound to fix at least a few of the errors buyers have reported over the past few days. Unfortunately this update did not fix a reported software bug found in the browser which could subject the phone’s user  to having their keystrokes recorded. That would be bad, especially if you bank or check email over the phone. I wouldn’t want anyone seeing my email, especially if they felt like being just nasty and canceling my jello flavor of the month subscription.

The fine folks over at androidcommunity point out and a discussion on the forum also discovers that RC29 software update fixes the issue and has been released. We expect like the previous software release, this one will be a staggered roll out so if you haven’t gotten it already, just keep waiting and you’ll get it. There is no magic wand to make you get it sooner rather than later so just keep an eye out over the next few days for a prompt to update your phone.

That’s all, we now return you to regularly scheduled broadcast. The Shield is on tonight as well, man I’m going to miss that show…

Detroit waking up to 3G?!

images

Detroit, Detroit, my neighbor to the North(east) it seems as though magenta has given you an early holiday gift and brought you 3G! With a dozen or so emails this morning from overjoyed G1 users, added with word out of this forum thread, T-mobile has gone and given Detroit residents a reason to smile today!

While T-mobile still has a way to go to catch up the national footprint of the big 3 players, every 3G city launch brings us closer and closer to the ultimate goal of total 3G domination. Well maybe not that dramatic, but you know it’s going to be fun pointing at 3G iPhone users, while they keep hitting redial and redial and redial.

So break out your G1’s, head on over to here, or here and report in the comments what kind of data speeds you are receiving.

Keep in mind dear readers, we have NO idea what geographic area the Detroit market makes up so when you ask in your comments if your city 130 miles a way has service, we don’t know!

G1 coming to a Wal-Mart near you?

g1-walmart

Engadgetmobile is reporting this morning that the G1 is on it’s way to Walmart and at a  price lower than T-mobile directly is offering. Walmart, king of the odd price is said to be selling the G1 at $148.88, a full $31.11 savings, or the cost of a tank of gas for me to get to my nearest Walmart.

Engadget’s tipster is claiming that the top 10 stores in each regional Walmart market will receive inventory by the 24th of November, just in time for the start of the holiday season. So the bottom line is you have about a month to decide whether or not waiting for a Walmart savings is just what you wanted for the holiday’s!

G1 email troubles plaguing early adopters??

email

For the G1, word on the street and in the hands of the users has been a fairly positive user experience, until they tried the email. Recent reports have pop3/imap accounts on the G1 plagued with troubles, while gmail is of course working just peachy. Between connection errors, messages not sending/receiving and other errors, email problems are plaguing users everywhere.

While early reports focus on comcast users, the troubles don’t seem to be specific to any email provider and don’t differ depending on the email account While the “official” word from T-mobile shows this problem being researched with the highest priority, that doesn’t do much in the way to solve the immediate problem. Early adopters are the bread and butter of phone launches now and as word leaks out about such early difficulties especially something so monumentally wrong as email usage it could turn off those who had planned to pick up the phone in the near future. I suppose the flip side to all this is to get the problems out of the way quickly and let future buyers, the less geeky and the less savvy enjoy the phones without the early buying headaches.

Via the official T-mobile forums, no relation to us of course, the Administrator had this to say:

“We used to see similar errors and symptoms with the old MyEmail service and the new Consumer Email Client.  Those are found on regular phones, but do encounter issues when there are more than 100 e-mails on the POP server or when there are emails with relatively large attachments.””

They are asking for anyone with troubles to report the nature of their problem in an effort to help T-mobile solve this problem sooner rather than later. Users report that deleting and re-adding the account has not worked nor has dropping the email count below 100 on the server. So for the moment, thou must endure and hopefully a fix is right around the corner.

Sound off in the comments…how is your email working?

HTC CEO comes clean on Android sales numbers, competitiveness…

imageagentproxy

Well, we all know that the “1.5 million G1’s sold!” rumor that was making it’s rounds on blogs everywhere is fake, but the question on everyone’s mind really has got to be… what IS the actual sales number?  Mercury News sat down with HTC’s CEO, Peter Chou, last week to discuss the success of the first Google phone and got some good, albeit not exact, numbers.

“I’m saying we will ship more than 600,000″ Chou had said, when asked how many G1 phones he expected to sell by the end of the year. “It will be more than what we originally planned.”

It’s nice to finally have an answer! The numbers seem to show that Android is here to stay and has been accepted as a platform that is ready to play with the big boys… paving the way for the next Google phone and implementation of Android as an OS that will keep getting better and stronger.

His answer was a little cryptic in regards to projected sales figures for 2009, preferring instead to say that they [HTC] do not disclose particular sales numbers but are confident in their competitiveness for next year. Translated: Our numbers will be high as long as word spreads about our awesome phone. I mean, it’s Google, c’mon!

As for how Mr Chou might convince potential iPhone buys to get the G1 instead? Well, we’ll let him do the talking:

“HTC products are very pragmatic and productive. We have spent a tremendous effort to make our product better. … It may not be as sexy as others. But it’s very nice, very mature and a very good experience. It has a very good quality keyboard, which makes it thicker. … It’s very good for text messaging or e-mail. .Americans are very keyboard-oriented.”

Ummm… do you think something might be missing in that statement? Like, “we have an open source platform which allows anyone to develop any kind of application at all” or maybe “Our phone is better, neener neener neener” Okay, maybe not that last part :-P

Enjoy your G1’s everyone!
