@Cheryl, @Talon: For most of us, our last upgrade was the same as our last contract, so that’s what I mean. And I understand the finances of the situation: T-Mobile takes a hit on ever $179 G1 they sell, so it only makes financial sense to give that price when they get a 2-year contract.

What I’m saying is that they’re turning would-be loyal, happy, and possibly evangelical users into annoyed and spiteful ex-users. I’ve been chatting up this phone for months now to all my friends, convincing at least two to leave their current networks to get a G1 with T-Mobile. Now, because I’m 4 months away from my full upgrade, T-Mobile says “No, you must pay the extra $120.”

So I live in a 2-bar area for T-Mo coverage, I’m probably just going to cancel and get a iPhone for $200. Sucks, but that’s how I feel.

  • Daniel

I got mine!!! you have to log on first then select the add on your my.tmobile page. thats the only way i got it to work.

  • Kaykordeath

“Now, because I’m 4 months away from my full upgrade, T-Mobile says “No, you must pay the extra $120.” ”

is this accurate? Or, if you wait it out the extra 3 months, can you still get the phone at the “upgrade” rate?

  • http://productiveonceaday.blogspot.com Ed S.

    @Karkordeath: I meant if I wanted it now. Extra $120 -> $299 – $179 = $120.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but as far as I can tell, the post-presale upgrade price isn’t necessarily the same as the presale upgrade price… but I may be completely wrong.

  • chad

no one has mentioned anything about the post pre-sale price. This phone could very will jump back to retail and not be part of T-mo’s upgrade service come 10/22.

I called the Loyalty department of T-Mo today and the rep’s best advice for those not eligible for an upgrade is to call the customer care line on 10/22 and ask for loyalty department and see what they can do.

Not sure if it was some dude blowing smoke up my arse, but it is worth a try…

  • Kaykordeath

@Ed S: Correct me if I’m wrong, but as far as I can tell, the post-presale upgrade price isn’t necessarily the same as the presale upgrade price… but I may be completely wrong.

Not sure myself. Trying to find out. I get my upgrade on October 3rd…so I’m hoping to just wait it out…the one rep I spoke to this afternoon couldn’t shift the date, but if need be I’ll try to find one who can….then again, the 3rd is payday….

  • tommis

    NO UMA!!!

    whats UMA?
I need that 5 line keyboard and aim for internet pimping sonnn

  • drivethruboy168

Okay people… the full price of the phone was $399.99, partial upgrades are $299.99 and full upgrades are $179.99. Now if your complaing that you’ve been a loyal customer for soo many years, you are much appreciated, but you are still on contract in which you will have to pay $299.99 for the phone! Your not paying $399.99 so i wouldn’t be complaing. All you are doing is refilling the portion of your contract you have used to get the discount on the phone which is $299.99. Customers wanting to upgrade that have used up 22 month of there contract or fully eligable. Nothing is changing as far as upgrade eligablility. You are getting special treated beacuse only EXISTING CUSTOMERS can pre purchase the phone. And as for the people on flex pay complaing that they have to wait till October 22 to get there phone and saying AT&T will treat them better, well have fun putiing out a DEPOSIT and buying your phone over there. If your getting mad that you can’t take place in the pre sale, and threatenening to switch over, you should be happy that T-Mobile took away deposits and all you had to do was buy your phone and pay your first months bill to get started and not a $250 deposit each line. Now… just wait till the site is back up and going and you will be able to pre order your phone. It’s not like the presale is only going to be for today. I’m pretty sure developers are going to come come up with the exchange program and stereo bluetooth will be coming really soon. Now for the people that have ordered it already… YYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! congrats! I’m super stoked for you! To bad since i’m an employee i can’t pre order it! Oh well… enjoy knowing that for sure your getting it at your doorstep with free shipping before i have it! But i will for sure be getting a black one!

  • TechnologyXDA

    To laphoneuser: If you are going to pay a $179.00 for a “Pacman Game and Street view”, I believe you had better get a new life…!{LOL} Get new life here at http://sonyericsson.com/x1/ ….! The Supreme, Superior Xperia X1…..!{LOL}

  • http://productiveonceaday.blogspot.com Ed S.

@Kaykordeath: Good luck! Hopefully they’ll still have G1s for the presale by the 3rd.

What kinda bugs me is that Cheryl said that “pays on time” is part of the calculation of what makes a “good customer”, and apparently T-Mobile’s determination of whether you’re a “good customer” is part of how they determine whether to help you out or not. I never knew that; in fact, a T-Mobile rep told me a long time ago that it didn’t matter if I paid my bill late as long as I paid it, which I do (I wait for 2 months to build up then pay once for simplicity’s sake).

I do understand T-Mobile’s side here, but it’s just frustrating and ultimately its going to cost them one customer right here.

  • http://productiveonceaday.blogspot.com Ed S.

@drivethruboy168: Just because it’s the same old policy doesn’t mean it’s still not frustrating. Especially to users like me who only recently learned the rules of the game.

$211.8 just ordered my G1 it comes to me door oct. 22nd

  • Alex

UMA is Hotspot@Home calling. $9.99 for unlimited calls over wifi. what a joke.

  • brian-y

what happened to the white 1 they where going to have did they sell out

  • Tom

Can someone ask someone what the post-presale price is going to be? I’m interested, but rumor was that post-presale is the same as presale price as long as you fall under the specifications of contract duration.

  • Tom

Here’s the story I was quoting about post-presale price… but I can see it could easily be a misinterpretation of the 179 price on oct 22. According to the story, it would imply that new customers could get a G1 for 179 on oct 22, which is SOOOOOO WRONG for existing loyal customers if true.

  • Tom
  • http://productiveonceaday.blogspot.com Ed S.

@Tom: If that’s the case, then this isn’t much of an advantage for existing customers.

  • James

They won’t sell it to me for $179… I refuse to pay the $299. What a joke. Time to get an iPhone.

  • dean

i had to pay 299. but i got in! i never saw the 179 offer.

  • laphoneuser

    @TechnologyXDA:

I don’t plan on using either of those (possibly street view), and for you to only see Android as those two applications just proves what an ignorant child you are.

Congrats if you love your Xperia. It looks like a cool phone, for sure, but you’re still a loser, because you have nothing better to do than tout it here, where nobody really cares about it.

  • http://www.elysekufeldt.com Elyse

With the lack of a standard headphone jack, closed bluetooth connection, inability to sync with my PC, and -above all- the misleading advertisement of $179, looks like I’m waiting for the next google phone.

    Disappointed.

  • dude

    IM RICH BIOTCH!!

  • Paul

I really had high hopes for this device, but I really can’t put off getting an iPhone after watching all this today. It has 3G coverage in my area now and is a lot more polished of a device. I was totally ready to preorder today… but they just didn’t deliver in what I was hoping.

  • talon

Technology XDA can you stop posting about the sonny xperia? Seriously? No one here cares about that phone right now.

@Drivethruboy, it does suck that we can’t pre-order the phone. I logged onto mytmobile to order it but no G1 there. So you regular customers are probably going to get you new phones before us employees get them. But believe you me, as soon as that phone ships to our store, I’m taking one to demo ;)

  • jon

ordred one. 299.99.. i had 3 months before full upgrade :(

im excited. but kinda bummed from the 1g cap.. im hoping that they will change it.

  • Tom

If the post-presale price is truly the same as presale price, a lot of people will be pissed. Everyone who has been paying 299.99 and having a few months left in their contract will be really pissed as they could have waited the 1-3 months to get that 120 discount. I really want one, and I am eligible for 179.99 but I need to know the post-presale price before I jump.

  • TechnologyXDA

    To Mr.laphoneuser: Their is nothing special about the GI, I saw the T-mobile/Google/G1 Dream phone show this morning. Their absolutely nothing special about the G1. No microsoft exchange, no video capture, no bluetooth stereo, but you are going to get a 2 year contract to play pacman and to use “Street View”…! Yeah right!{LOL} Get the real deal here http://sonyericsson.com/x1/ ……!{LOL}

  • Tom

LoL @ TechnologyXDA still peddling his warez.

The special part of G1 is that it is highly and seamlessly integrated with google and google apps out of the box. After that, the special part is that it is pretty much completely customizable because you have access to all the hardware.

  • Jon

Anyone find it odd that I have yet to see video or pics of the phone functions? It is a phone…right?

  • Freddie

Touche, Jon. I have been wondering the same thing. That press conference seemed pretty candid.

Just ordered in black, after calling a T-Mo rep (and getting on the phone in less than 60 seconds, kudos to them for obviously adding extra shifts for this day.

The $299 price is b/c I have only been a customer for about 12 months. I think it is a decent price when you see what a crackberry or even an iPhone costs. Not only is it the first real high end phone we have got in a million years, the open source thing had me hooked. So, the dSLR will have to wait, I am getting my Black G1 on the 22nd! Success

  • Freddie

@Casey…no, we’re curious how the G1 functions as a phone…we all remember the visuals Apple gave us when Steve Jobs was browsing around the web and suddenly he received a call from Apple’s VP. T-Mo has yet to provide us with visuals of the calling functions of the G1. While it may not be deemed that important by many of you, I’m just a little curious.

  • specialk

Add me to the list of folks that had enough trouble with upgrading online to cool off and think about it. I *hate* the proprietary jack on my current Samsung and swore I’d never get another phone without a 3.5. I also had hopes that the brown was going to be somehow much more groovy.
I’m going to wait until the 22nd and go to a store and check out the white one and see if I fall in love enough.

  • Rob

Im holding off for the white… it grew on me

  • kevin

For an open source phone it seems to have a shitload of restrictions.
    Must have gmail.
Must have a data plan or it won’t work which is completely ridiculous. (35 dollars is not a good plan. 10 dollars unlimited family text, 19.99 unlimited data is only 30. They are adding 5 dollars just for kicks.)
and now u are limited to 1gig before they restrict you. Must sign a 2 year.
song store is 89 cents a song.

This phone is bullshit. You guys all ragged on the att/iphone for all the restrictions and now look at you u have even more restrictions. Google is bullshit. G1 is bullshit. T-mobile is bullshit. PS I still hate the iphone.

  • Jay

I just preorder mine in black and i think 300 for a partial upgrade is fine because it has the best cutting edge technology and people complain about the price? c’mon everyone here is being totally cheap because when the iphone came out, it was a hefty price and if it broke u were forced to buy a new one because att insurance didnt cover it and t-mobile for the g1 IS covered. I think its still worth it. at least t-mobile is playing smart and if ur g1 broke maybe its 150 deductable or less and u still get a new or refurbished phone IF you have insurance and another thing is that the bundle for text and web is pretty good compared to iphone web only service and pay extra for messaging. So if you dont like it, then dont get it. T-mobile is not forcing to get it

  • JD

So, the least expensive iPhone ($199 with 2-year contract) gives you 8GB of space, and the G1 ($179 with 2-year contract) gives you only 1GB of space?….Ouch.

  • Ty

    Will this phone have headphones?

And will I be able to watch real movies on it? Not just go to youtube?

  • sflex

kevin, I don’t know where you get your information from.

Unlimited family text for 9.99 is something that only comes out I would say once a year (IF that). If you’re getting the G1.. or even, let’s say the Blackberry on an -individual- line: 19.99 for BIS plus 14.99 for unl msg ~ $35 ..? or did I do that math wrong? Either way, I’m pretty sure that’s how much the data + msg for the G1 is.

And how else would a phone meant for data work without a data plan anyway?

You always have to sign a two year to get a discount off of invoice (in this case, $179 vs $399).

And did you think that to download a song would be completely free? You, sir, are out of your mind.

  • http://jessesears.blogspot.com windupbird

You need to add an (up to 8gb) SD card for more space. The 8gb ones are still a little expensive, though flash memory prices are plummeting and should be even lower in the next couple of months.

Advantage of this way, like the N95 phones that use microSD, is if you want to store a lot of music or whatever they are hotswappable. Kinda lame of them to only give you 1 gig out of the box, I agree. The proprietary ear jack does suck… We are sure on this?

I already ordered it I don’t care. Does it come with a wired mic/ear headset combo? As long as the headset is not a cheap piece of junk, these compromises are well worth it to me. Have you guys seen some of the contest-winning aps and the way they are using GPS? We will be amazed even before 2K8 is done what this thing can do.

  • Tom

    @JD

I remember reading somewhere that it was upgradeable to 8gb of space. Seeing as how they dont sell an 8gb model, I’m assuming that it uses some sort of SD card that you can pop in that’s has a 8GB cap. So theoretically, if this were true, you have unlimited space as long as you buy and carry around these memory cards to swap in and out.

  • Tom

    Yep.

    http://tmonews.com/2008/09/info-leaks/

Expandable to 8GB memory… but doesnt state how this is expandable, so assume what you choose.

  • JD

That’s good news…I’m so tempted to land this puppy, although I feel that it will benefit me to wait for my contract to end (Feb 09) for a lower price and improvements to the G1 by then.

  • laphoneuser

Pluses, minuses, pluses, minuses. No phone is perfect. The strength of this product lies in its operating system, and not in its hardware. There are plenty of other phones which are nicer looking, but do they run Android? Do you care?

If you hate the G1 hardware, but love the OS, just sit tight and wait for other carriers to come out with their Android phones in a form factor that suits you.

For me, Windows Mobile is not an option, Symbian is not an option, and mobile OSX (or whatever it’s called) is the least desirable option (but without a real QWERTY, forget it).

I can live with the G1 hardware, but it’s the Android OS that really excited about.

  • neese

$299 is still good because of all of the features and capabilities. That cheaper then the sidekick lx. I just ordered mine

  • brian

OK, so, how does this work on a family plan to upgrade all the phones? It seems you’ll end up double/triple paying for text messaging and the data plan will cost more than DSL at home!?!

  • Blue Alien

Im really mad that you HAVE to get a data plan with this. Being in high school on a family plan I can not afford to pay the 35$ a month. I wouldn’t mind 10$ but paying 35$ a month on top of the initial 180$ just ruins my dreams of android(pun intended).

  • Ty

will we be able to watch real movies on this?

how will the mp3s work with headphone? will it come with them?
