I think the design is fine
it should have good streaming support by the spec posted earlier
now the final decision factor is data service

    Re: ugly

Who gives a rat’s a**? I care more about functionality than fashion statements. It looks “good enough”. I only care whether or not it’s going to a good phone, a good internet device, and maybe a good gateway device for my laptop or umpc.

I agree that the “trackball” looks more like a trackpad or finger sensor. I think that’d be better anyway. I hate the trackballs on the blackberries and sidekicks.

The UI is more worrisome than the phone itself.

  • greg

Question , what touch screen phone released in the last year or so looks worse?? for those that think its sexy must be fanboys … heck i was too until i stepped back and realized we were wrapped up in hype for a very average phone. i need a support group to get over this.

    shesh.

i wa so pumped and android ready, since the specs and phone design details i am bummed big time. maybe i will join the freakin att network.

at the end of the day ithe iphone really is much better than what were seeing here. i am holding out a few more weeks but damn…

    deal killers:
    no recent touchphone looks worse
lacking headphone jack (htc jacks suck)
presumed specs are at best on par with iphone and worse than any other smartphone being announced
costs are within 5 a month so its not THAT cheap

  • remnique

This one of the ugliest phones I have seen in years, was thinking about getting it for 1 of my upgrades. It looks like the side kick took several steps back in the design department, with that said, with an untested os, lack of word, excel, powerpoint its not worth it. also there is really no apps for it, and before you say it i know eventually they will get them. and for everyone who says they want functionality, over looks are lying, everyone wants a good looking phone, because if that wasn’t the case manufactures would make all phones look the same.

  • T1 Connect

@sheshe well its not the most impressive phone ur right but people said the same thing about the wing hey it turned out fine plus itself whats inside that matters and i will get the android and the touch pro gansta stlye rock both of them android for play touch pro for eveything else……..1up

  • T1 Connect

@ gregg take ya stinkin ass and bounce homie when att goes bankrupt again dont come back. cool.

  • MobileSurfer

I use a HP Pavilion tx1000 tablet Notebook. It has buttons on the edge of the screen to use for DVD play/fwd/rew/stop.
When using it as a PC tablet and trying to hold the Notebook in your hand, it VERY EASY to touch those buttons along the edge and instantly your out of PC-mode and into QuickPlay-DVD-mode. Very annoying!

Where am I going with this and what does it have to do with the HTC-Dream?

I hope that when the HTC-Dream screen is flipped open that those round buttons and MENU button located on the front of the mobile are inactive or hard-to-depress, otherwise while texting, a lot of HTC-Dream owners are going to be hitting these buttons with their right hand while gripping the mobile in landscape mode. It’ll be a bitch while surfing or texting to all of a sudden go to a MENU or HOME screen.

Hope whomover is still working out bugs of the HTC-Dream, can write something into the settings that those button CAN be detactivated when accessing keyboard.

  • evan

sorry but if i’m paying 300 dollars (existing customer) I better get a phone that matches the potential that i know htc can put out on the market. thats my two cents and dont worry i’m still buying it so dont have a heart attack!

  • J-Hop2o6

    @ T1 Connect

your right about that loop thang.. but yea, im crossin’ my fingers for that HTC Touch Pro and a November release!!!

  • Greg

@ T1 grow up before your parents block your internet access. If you’re pissed because I’m calling it the way it is then time to wake up. Many of us had wanted this phone to rock; I’ve checked the sites for months going nuts for details but the facts are obvious. IT may be an ok phone or maybe even good… but it won’t rock and it wont’ be an iphone killer by any means. That is what it was supposed to be. It was freakin called the dream…

I’m no AT&T fan; i’ve been with Tmo for many years but I’ll let you work out your own issues.

My prediction Android is AT LEAST a year from being a solid phone system and 2 years from having devices, software, SDK and community support to make it a real iPhone replacement.

  • kevinholikan

Please god let the HTC touch pro rumors be true! I sent T-mobile an email a couple months ago complaining they weren’t getting this phone and it was a huge mistake on their part. I sent them links to point out the number of people that wanted this phone. Hopefully that helped out and this rumor is true.

  • kevinholikan

ps wtf didn’t they take a picture of the thickness for god sake. They took pictures of every angle except the one I needed.

  • T1 Connect

@mobile surfer yo i got a tx2000 ur damn right about those keys but its not the same premise the buttons on htc phone have trated us good so far i know im using one now but dud if its like the sidekick i am so giving that thing back to tmo i swear

  • T1 Connect

@ gregg listen homie you aint tell me nothin new son i had tmo since omnipoint i work for another cafrrier thag can give me a free phone and i proudly rock a tmo phone
for u to say im going to att keep that to urself i didnt say anything about it being an iphone killer i just want a new phone i stuck with winmo from 5 and tried a lot of apps for it. hell ive used a thousand cooked roms on my wing and im going to treat the andriod with the same respect dude all im saying is everything deserves a chance man the phone is nice got apps already so what the ram and rom is low its lunix it doesnt need a lot of both to run man show the phone some luv.

  • NuMb3rOne1

so im reasking an unanswered question deal with it,

does anybody know if it will have a touchscreen keyboard as well as the slideout keyboard? i still havent seen any pictures denying it and given that it is supposed to be an iphone killer shouldnt it share that feature?

  • NuMb3rOne1

so im reasking an unanswered question deal with it,

  • John

iPhone killer? Again, who gives a rat’s a**. If you need your ego stroked by being able to get back at the iPhone fanboys by having your own fashion accessory that’s even better … then grow up.

I don’t want, nor care, about an iPhone killer. What I want is a device that does what I want it to, and does it well.

Hell, the iPhone is an iPhone killer, as far as I’m concerned. It doesn’t do half the things I want. It kills itself.

If the phone has the features you want, does them well, and has a usable interface, why do you care whether or not it’s an “iPhone killer”? That type of pissing contest is for 12 year olds.

  • Greg

@John Where have you been?? Everybody gives a rat’s a**. It’s not about ego, fanboys, or being cool. It’s about having the latest and greatest (or close to it tech). And when the latest and greatest tech looks sexy it’s even better.

People, including myself, want this to be an iPhone killer because the iPhone has shortcomings. We want the iPhone to have SERIOUS competition because we want the envelope pushed. But if you’re disapointed in the iPhone as you state, I don’t think you’ll be happy with the G1. And don’t give me the “open network, open apps” BS.

Since this is not an iPhone vs. G1 thread; I’ll drop it. I brought it up only because the news further suggests this isn’t the phone for me, and I am pretty sure I’m not the only one who’s trying to decide between an iPhone and SOMETHING else.

  • mingkee

it’s not about iPhone, G1, or whatever
the phone fits my need, but I have to see what’s inside (I say software and spec)
and I also have figure out how to add any400 messaging in order to have this device works with my VPN, I don’t want to lose it just for this phone

  • fmonk

That UI is looking ugly and one of the prototype phones shown a long time ago looks much better than this. Pass.

  • boogyman

I thought I would hate white and pick the black version, but now that I see the pictures its kinda growing on me. Not sure which to pick now.

  • SinCity

I will most def be geting it in black. Just watched the Andy Rubin demo on youtube and the black verion looks so much better. Not that looks of the phone are a big issue with me I just prefer the black version to the white. And I think Rubin called that little ball a trackball, which I’m not a fan of but I don’t mind.

  • dbr

Hey, I know this might be way out there, but what if what we are seeing is pictures of a T-mo branded testing device? What if there is still some secret device that no one has seen before out there? I think this might be some huge marketing ploy to get hype going so that when they release the real phone, everyone will get it cause it will look so much better than what we are seeing now.

  • Marc

This is an HTC made device, so any chance of touch flo?

  • Marc

@75 it does look like a testing device, it doesn’t look complete, and the phone itself looks kinda screwy, crooked even.

  • Marc

Wouldn’t it be funny if the diamond or maybe the pro, was the G1 phone!

  • SheShe

    not really

  • edwin

isnt that the Germany T-Mobile MDA Vario IV next to it in black?? i would love to see that coming our way!!

  • edwin

@marc….it would be my dream come true!!

  • dbr

See, now there is something that I would start camping for right now. TouchPro, T-mo branded, and with Android as the OS. That is EVERYONE’S DREAM!

  • edwin

dude thats so not gonna come true!

  • T1 Connect

i think this the phone what we are seeing is a screen and few apps it not a final product usually when you get a tmo phone there is tmo branded icons all over the screen all we see is google apps theres no side view to see tmo shortcut keys there no network name just and esclamation point yet the phone has signal thats difenetly it but not the final product

  • Nathan

Sharp lost the contract to the Sidekick. Sidekick needs a new OS. T-mobile needs to revive a stagnant brand. Stagnant is the Sidekick, Android is the new OS. That is Android but not on an HTC. First off, no CMOS front facing camera for Video Calling. T-mobiles Tri-Band 3G network is more than capable of video calling. HTC makes CMOS cameras for all their phones. T-mobile has a secret and everyone is headed in the wrong direction. T-mobile knows it and they are loving it. Have fun buying a 400 dollar 3G Sidekick!

  • SheShe

    thats not a sidekick

  • T1 Connect

no front facing cam tmo isn’t ready for that yet and does anyone notice this thing is surrounded by european phones if its for tmo usa why is it around a mda IV and a european 8525

  • Erica

It’s hideous. I may not be swooning over the iPhone or drooling over it (I don’t care for it) but just because its functional doesn’t mean it cam be ugly. It can be both: HTC Touch Diamond/Pro is a perfect example of that. This thing looks gigantic, which may be fine for large hands but not for small hands. And how thick it is? No matter which way you cut it if it’s a brick, it’s going to get old fast as smartphones slim down which is the trend. (I own a smartphone… 90% functionality, 10% looks.)

I’m tired of the Andriod this, Android that. Most smartphones are buggy when they are first released and it only gets better after manufacturer/hacked firmware fixes. This isn’t just a new smartphone, but a new OS. Plus open source app development? What’s the point in having the phone if you can’t even use it to its full functionality? It takes months for the community to grow to have a wide/broad array of programs.

Honestly, still feels like I’m with the wrong carrier. T-Mobile better have more up their sleeve.

  • J-Hop2o6

    @ T1 Connect

i was wondering why is was between European phones (8225 & MDA Vario IV) also.. hmmm

  • T1 Connect

yo hop ya know what im thinking thats htc’s test shop or something

  • J-Hop2o6

    ^^

probably.. i forgot the G1 is made by HTC

  • SiliconAddict

Dear God….where to start. *shakes head* First off everyone needs to calm the hell down. Secondly there is Android itself. People get a clue. This thing is probably NOT going to ship with the default color scheme. The colors being displayed are freakishly ugly. I’d be willing to bet my yearly salary that T Mob has a designers working on the “look” of Android. Have no fear the OS will look teh sexy by the time it ships. Next up is the device itself. The front of it SCREAMS prototype. Hell the backlight on the buttons isn’t even, even.
    People need to chilax.

  • fmonk

    @ Erica

    I agree with you completely!

  • VooDooVixen

    @ Silicon

I agree that this is still not a finished phone. Why are there curiously no pics of the back for us to see the camera. Maybe because no one puts a camera in a prototype. And also, why force that tmobile signature at the top near the speaker. There is pleeeeenty space near the bottom. No designer in his/her right mind would leave all that space there. Lastly, HTC loves their black/green color scheme. Its their new brand look if you go to the website. The latest phones have that scheme as well. Why would they put big a@# colored call/end buttons on the front. Those are my reasons. Please join me on the G1 Ruse train in the forums if you guys agree.

  • Alex

I think this is just another unfinished product to create more hype. Anybody else?

  • T1 Connect

@alex yo yesterday when i saw it it looked nice but that was on my wing last night i good home and looked at it on my pc and screamed prototype

  • SheShe

T1 i hope that that is the prototype i just dont think HTC would make that the final product

  • just me

I can not see that as the final verison of the phone..I think it will be close to what we are looking at but with all the HTC phones i have seen to me this would not be the type of phone they would come out with

  • Erica

I’m pretty sure this is not a prototype. Commonly when pictures surface on the internet of a highly anticipated phone, you’ll get 90% of what you see (it’s a near-finished or near-completed prototype). Besides, I highly doubt HTC and T-Mobile will pass a prototype version to the FCC. If anything, the form factor will remain the same. Whether they gloss it up, etcetera, is up for grabs.

… It looks like a white wing
